Canadian Academy offers a variety of summer programs for Elementary, Middle and High School students. All programs are designed for both CA students and non-CA students. We have enrolled students from Africa, Canada, China, France, India, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United States, and all over Japan. Students must be at least 5 years old by September 30, 2015. Students applying for programs other than ‘Summer Fun @ CA’ should be able to function at an age appropriate level in the English language.

Our Location Canadian Academy is conveniently located on Rokko Island,anartificialislandintheportcityofKobe, Japan. Please visit the Rokko Island City site for information on our school’s immediate environment.

Our Facility Most Middle and High school courses will be held in the main building, and almost all classes for Elementary students will be held in ELAC (Early Learning and Activities Center). Facilities including the cafeteria, portable computer labs, all will share main theater, P&G Black Box Theater, studios, Lilly Field, Nestle Field and gymnasiums.

Accommodation Students and their families traveling from afar can receive special discount from Hotel Plaza Kobe. Please ask for more detail.

I Summer school tuition: » On or before the date of the Summer School Application deadline

registered for: No refund of tuition fees for such week(s).

II Typhoon, earthquake, or other “acts of God”: » No refund for any summer-school-related fees in the case of

cancellation of school and/or of activities due to typhoon, earthquake, or other extreme events beyond the control of summer school staff. This includes cancellation of school due to epidemic outbreaks or any other government mandated closures.

» In case of school closure, we will announce it on our school website http://www.canacad.ac.jp/. You can also check by phone, 078-857-0100.

III Finally: Because there is no entrance exam or interview, Canadian Academy reserves the right to reject the application, even after the start of summer school, of any student who is unable to function at an age-appropriate level in the English language, and/or whose behavior is consistently inappropriate. Any student asked to leave the summer school program based on circumstances covered in the aforementioned will receive 80% tuition refund for any week(s) he/she is enrolled in that follow the week in which he/she is asked to leave; no tuition refund for the week in which he/she is asked to leave.

Canadian Academy Summer Program only collects personal information necessary to administer the program.Allinformationwillbekeptconfidentialunder the Personal Information Protection Law, and will not be disclosed to any third parties or be used for purposes other than to administer the program.

* Photo and video permission: Throughout the program students and staff will be taking photographs and video of their learning and fun. Most of this will take place at school and some outside. We will be posting them on our website for parents and students tosee,andpossiblybeusedforbrochures/flyersforthe following year with your permission. If you do not wish to grant us permission to photograph or use your child’sphotographforpossiblebrochure/flyer,pleasecheck the appropriate box on the application form. Our conduct will of course adhere to the CA rules already in place regarding use of student photos, and normal safety precautions will be followed at all times.

A popular offering at CA for almost three decades, the Elementary School Summer program is a full-day program from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for students currently enrolled in KA through 5th grade. You may sign up your child for one,two,three,orfourweeks,whateverfitsyourfamily’sschedulebest!

First MondayPlease meet in the Black Box Theater at 9:00 AM. Each teacher/assistant will collect their students and proceed to their class. Supervision in the morningSummer School hours are from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Your child is welcome to come anytime after 8:45 each morning. Please do not send your child to school before 8:45. AbsencesPlease notify the school (078) 857-0100 or email <[email protected]> by 9:00 AM in case of your child’s absence from Summer School, or when s/he will be late. We endeavor to complete our attendance check by 9:15 every morning and phone the homes of children who are not accounted for. If your child is late or absent, your phoning us will be a big help.

PickupPlease either pick up your child at or shortly after 3:00 PM or instruct him/hertoreturnhomesoonafterschoolfinishes.WedoNOTprovideplayground/gym supervision after the end of the school day at 3:00 PM. SuppliesPlease send the following items, with every piece labeled with your child’s name. Children will have a cubby space to keep their belongings in. » Clean indoor gym shoes (NO sandals) » A hat or cap / sun screen » A bottle of water and a change of shirt » Healthy snack (Fresh and dried fruits, vegetables, cheese, crackers,

small onigiri are good choices. Candies, chocolate, chips, jelly, other sugary/greasy snack are not.)

» Complete change of clothes for kindergarten students

Canadian Academy offers a variety of summer courses for Middle and High School students. Choose one, two, three or four courses of your choice!

All programs are designed especially for CA students; however, non-CA students are welcome to attend. (Non-CA students should be able to function at a grade-appropriate level in the English language.)

Jump Start Japanese! (MYP Language & Literature)for CURRENT Grades 5-88:30 - 10:30Ms. Nishizawa

Brush up on your reading and writing skills of Japanese during the summer togetajumpstartinAugust!Thiscourseisdesignedforstudentswhowillbe studying in the MYP Language & Literature (native/near native) program Year 1-3. The focus of this course is on writing and reading skills. Students will study Kanji at his/her level; learn how to write essays in various forms (e.g. creative, comparative and persuasive) by using the MYP Language & Literature criteria, and read self-selected novels.

SAT Math Preparationfor CURRENT Grades 9-118:30 - 10:30Mr. S. Okada

Strong SAT scores are vital for students who wish to apply to American and Canadian universities. Our two-week summer SAT preparation course introduces students to the core principles of Math that they will need to master in order to achieve a high score on this exam. At the start and the end of each session, students complete a full diagnostic test with questions typical of the actual SAT 1 exams. Students must complete grade 9 or equivalent curriculum to take this course. This course will take maximum number of 10 students.

Cinematography and Youfor CURRENT Grades 7-128:30 - 10:30Ms. Ishikawa Do you want to work on your movie skills, work with background sounds, and sound tracking your movies? This course is for you. We will be learning advanced skills to make your movies look and sound more professional.

MYP Humanities through Current Eventsfor CURRENT Grades 5-810:40 - 12:40Ms. Shirota

Using current events (news), students will read, write and discuss local and global issues. Instructional focus will be on guiding students how to approach and respond to information using MYP Humanities criteria.

Jump Start Math Ifor CURRENT Grades 5-610:40 - 12:40Mr. Okada

Jumpstart Math Level 1 is a two weeks long summer program geared towards students who will be Grade 6 or 7 next academic year and interested in achieving a better or in-depth understanding of mathematics. Students who attend should be prepared to do a lot of problem solving. The course will cover different branches of mathematics such as arithmetic, combinatorics, pre-algebra and problem solving. Different math competition problems, math puzzles and challenging games will be used throughout the course. This course will take maximum number of 10 students.

High School Japanese Language & Literaturefor CURRENT Grades 8-1110:40 - 12:40Ms. Nishizawa

This course is designed for students who will start studying in HS Japanese VI and above in August (students should be able to read Japanese newspaper for adults). The focus of this course is on “Textual Analysis.” Students will examine various text types such as advertisements, editorials and opinion columns, and analyze its purpose, audience, context, stylistic features and their effects to help them to prepare for the DP Japanese Language & Literature. Students will study Kanji at his/her level.

Japanese Language Acquisition for CURRENT Grades 7-1110:40 - 12:40Ms. Sugiyama

This course is designed for students who will start studying in the MS/HS Japanese Language Acquisition course (MS J3/4 or HS J I-IV) in August. Students will read, write and discuss a variety of topics such as communication and media, and global issues. They will also learn to analyze various text types (e.g. diary, newspaper articles and speech scripts). This workshop will help students to gain essential knowledge and skills to prepare for the DP Japanese Language Acquisition programme. After submitting the application form, fees must be paid to the CA Accounting Office, which is

open during CA school days from 8:30 to 15:30. You can also pay using bank transfer. We do NOT

send an invoice.
