Welcome to La Jolla Country Day School's Summer School program where students from Tiny Torreys (age 3) to Grade

12 will find a wide-range of courses to help challenge, inspire, and rock their world. Current students as well as friends of the Country Day community and visiting guests may attend Summer Courses at La Jolla Country Day.

In addition to our academically advanced courses in science, English, mathematics, visual & performing arts, and foreign language for students of all grade levels, we offer sports camps and a traditional day camp.

La Jolla Country Day reserves the right to cancel a course due to insufficient enrollment.

REGISTRATION

Each student must pay a one-time, non-refundable $25 registration fee.

All registration must be completed through our online process. All payments must be made by credit card. Full payment must be made at the time of registration. Registration is not considered complete until class fees are

paid in full.

Financial assistance is available for academic enrichment classes ONLY for families enrolled full-time at La Jolla

Country Day School in the fall of 2015. Families must complete the online registration and select the financial assistance option for payment.

Students should enroll in courses for the grade they will be entering in the fall. All courses are grade level unless otherwise indicated.

Registration fees include all books and classroom materials.

There is no prorating for missed days during the course of a program.

By June 1, classes not reaching a minimum enrollment will be cancelled. Students in those classes may choose another available course or receive a full refund for that tuition.

In order to profit and contribute to the academic classes, international students applying for classes in Grades 1 to

8 must be proficient in English (reading and writing). Students who do not meet the requirement will be advised to withdraw from the class or switch to a program that is less dependent on language skills. Unfortunately, under

such circumstances, we are unable to offer a refund. Please contact the summer school director with questions or concerns.

MEDICATIONS

All students taking prescription OR over the counter medications during summer school hours will need to have

a Prescription Medication Administration Release Form or Over the Counter Medication Administration Release Form filled out in its entirety prior to the start of classes. No medication will be allowed or given at school until this form is

submitted even if the medication was given at school the previous year. School year medications will not transfer over.

New for 2015 - a current copy of your child's immunization record must be submitted in order for your child to attend the summer programs.

All students requiring prescription medications need to turn medications in in the original prescription container and in a

Ziploc bag labeled with the child’s name, grade, parents name, two emergency phone numbers and a current picture of

the child. This form can be downloaded by clicking on the links below

It is up to the discretion of the school nurse or designated health provider to administer any over the counter medications.

It is best to give medication at home prior to arrival at school. The first dose of any medication should never be given at school. All medications must be picked up by the last day of summer school or they will be discarded.

REFUNDS

A refund of 100 percent of the tuition for any course may be obtained for any request made prior to May 1 and a refund of

75% of the tuition for any course may be obtained for any request made prior to June 1. There are no refunds after June 1. Please contact Dan Wagner [email protected] with any requests.

ATTENDANCE

Students may miss only one class in all Upper School/High School credit classes unless a specific arrangement is made prior to registration with the Summer School Director.

HOLIDAY

All Country Day Summer Programs will not be in session on July 3, 2015 (federal holiday).

GRADES, REPORTS, AND TRANSCRIPTS

Students taking a non-credit class receive a written report

of their progress at the end of the course. If a student is continuing in another session of the same program, only

one report will be provided. These reports consist of a summary of the student's development and effort

throughout the course. Students taking credit classes receive a report halfway through the course and again at

the end. Transcripts of summer work will be sent to other schools upon request.

RULES AND POLICIES

La Jolla Country Day School's rules and policies about student attendance and behavior apply, as stated in

the Parent/Student Handbook. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. La Jolla Country

Day School admits students without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, or sex.

CANCELLATION

La Jolla Country Day reserves the right to cancel a course

due to insufficient enrollment. Cancellation of classes will be decided by June 1 and every effort will be made to find

an alternate class selection. If an adequate alternative is not available a 100% refund will be made including any

registration fees.

SUMMER SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE

We invite all families to join us on Saturday, June 13 for

Summer School Open House. Please join us any time between 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. to meet our summer

school teachers, find your classroom or take a tour of our campus. Teachers and staff will be here to answer any of

your questions. Check-in begins outside the office of Admission that morning. No RSVP is required.

REVISITING THE 3 R's: Grades 1-2

This class uses Caldecott Award-winning books. This courseis not intended for remedial work but rather to

expand on writing, reading and math skills. Each student's reading and phonic skills are strengthened by the use of literature, basal readers, and phonetic-based reading materials. Math focuses on different areas and

includes games, computation skills, and problem-solving activities. Daily journal writing and a physical education segment are also included. The three sessions of this class are different and students may enroll in one or all of

them.

FUN WITH THE AMERICAN GIRLS: Grades 1-4

Based on the popular American Girl novels, this class explores daily life during various periods of our nation's

history. There is time each day for reading, related games, and crafts. A physical education segment is also included.

JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS: Grades 3 & 4

In the Junior Great Books summer school class, our goals are to develop comprehension and interpretive

reading skills as we deepen our understanding of the literature selections. We will also work dilligently at expressing our opinions and conclusions while listening to the ideas of others. We will extend the experiences

with a variety of activities such as, reader's theater, puppetry and poetry. Our activities are related to the stories and discussions. The stories that we explore are chosen based on the opportunity to engage in discussions as

we work toward discovery and relevance in our reading. JGB is a part of the curriculum in third and fourth grade at Country Day but the stories we read will not be part of the school-year course.

Y.A.L. - YOGA, ART, and LITERATURE: Grades 3 & 4

Offered to incoming third and fourth graders, Yoga, Art, and Literature (Y.A.L.) immerses students in daily yoga poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques as well as creative art lessons and inspiring literature. The

summer session will be both mentally and physically enriching. Students will leave our classes feeling more confident, flexible and relaxed. Each child will write and illustrate a personalized yoga book for his/her

culminating project.

Also each student will receive a yoga mat and eye pillow, which they may keep after the session. Please wear comfortable clothing to each class.

SD JUNIOR THEATRE: Kindergarten - Grade 4

Come join San Diego Junior Theatre and learn what it takes to be an accomplished actor, singer and dancer for

the theatre. Students will receive training in each discipline with theatre professionals through a conservatory-style program. At the end of the two-week session, students will perform a showcase of scenes, songs and

dances for family and friends. This is a fantastic opportunity for both the aspiring performer and for the child who has yet to discover the joy of theatre. The program is open to children in grades 1-4. No prior training or

experience necessary.

THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST: Grades 3 & 4

Explore science principles that you see in action every day. From static shock and magnetism to the conversion of matter and gravitational pull, we are constantly bearing witness to demonstrations of science principals.

Students will use these observations and inquiry to explore different scientific principles. They will use marbles and ramps to explore the Doppler Effect; ping pong balls, spools of thread and coins to apply Bernoulli’s

principle; and balloons, gelatin and rice cereal to explore static electricity. We will focus on the skills of patience, persistence, proving, and presenting. In addition, students will keep journals and have opportunities to

work with Lego Mindstorms.

INTRODUCTION TO TAIKO DRUMMING: Ages 8 - 14

Introduction to Taiko Drumming will introduce children to both the joy and discipline of Taiko drumming in a fun, structured environment. A cross between martial arts and music, Taiko classes will teach children about Taiko

fundamentals and form, respect for instructor and one another and the spirit of Taiko.This four-week class will meet twice a week for 50 minutes and is open to enthusiastic students ages 8 through 14.

CAMP TORREYS: KINDERGARTEN - Grade 4

Enjoy six weeks of fun with the La Jolla Country Day School staff at Camp Torreys. Each week, campers will

embard on two half-day field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Mondays and Wednesdays, campers will enjoy enrichment activities on campus. Friday is the best day of all with a special water party at Camp Torreys.

ACTIVE LEARNING SERVICES PRESENTS:

SCRATCH - 3D ANIMATION (presented by Active Learning Services): Ages 8-16

Campers are introduced to programming by creating short story animated movies with a focus on fun. Students

will create animated stories using the Scratch animated programming tool which allows them to program interactions between characters. Campers will use a gallery of 3D characters, scenery and custom animations

that are designed to help develop skills as well as provide the opportunity to broaden their imagination.

VIDEO GAME CREATION - PLATFORM STYLE (presented by Active Learning Services): Ages 8-16

In this program, campers will build a game described as a “platform” game like Sonic or Mario. Campers have a blast as their characters progress along a path (like a journey) doing the impossible, while overcoming obstacles

and opponents and then conquering the Big Boss. Starting with a brief overview of basic arcade style video programming, campers will focus their time on learning programming skills that expand their characters

movements such as jumping and bouncing between multi level playing fields in order to build their own Platform game.

GAMEBUILDER VIDEO GAME CREATION CAMPS (presented by Active Learning Services)

Active Learning Services’ video game creation camps offer programs that use our custom designed curriculum

that provide campers to use their creativity as they learn to program a video game using step-by-step instructions while learning about the history of game design, design concepts, game styles and more! There are

no prerequisites. All video creation programs are half-day programs that can be combined with an additional Active Learning Services offering to make a full day camp.

CHESS CAMP (presented by Active Learning Services): Ages 5-15

USA Chess is the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is

comprised of the finest children’s chess instructors in North America. Registration options include mornings, afternoon and all-day sessions. Campers experience chess instruction and play in a fun filled environment

designed to improve their skills whether they are interested in casual or competitive chess. Tuition includes trophy, chess set and much more.

KODU VIDEO GAME CREATION ADVENTURE STYLE (presented by Active Learning Services): Ages 7-16

In this program, campers will have the option of learning how to program using a Microsoft Xbox controller!

Children will create their own cool custom world and navigate inside this location. Within this world, campers will create tasks that need to be completed in order to progress to the next level. Some of those tasks include

escaping a sewer maze, survival mode, outwitting rivals, creating decoys and collecting bonus items all while having fun and using their creativity. The use of a Xbox controller is optional and supplied by the camper.

Courses are Monday-Friday unless otherwise noted.

PLEASE NOTE: Grade requirements for Summer Session courses refer to student’s grade in the 2015-2016 academic year. Morning electives are offered in a five-week session with each class meeting daily for 50 minutes. Students may enroll in up to four courses each day. Please be careful to select options that do not conflict. If a student has gaps in their morning schedule, they are encouraged to use the designated study area before their next class.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADES 5 - 8

MORNING ELECTIVES:

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP: Grades 5-8

Do you ever have a "mental block" when you are trying to write? This workshop offers students a unique and safe approach to creative writing. Emphasis is placed on stimulating thought processes and developing

expression and creativity. Students are given the opportunity to read and critique each other's work. Grammar, paragraph organization, and vocabulary enrichment are also incorporated into the course. Topics to be

discussed include the essay, short story, novel, poetry and the Japanese form, "haiku."

PUBLIC SPEAKING: Grades 5-8

This course is an introduction to public speaking. Emphasis is placed on gaining experience as a speaker in front of an audience or as a member of a group. Students are instructed in form (posture, delivery and diction)

and content (choice of topic, organization and development). Topics covered include informative, persuasive and instructive speeches, formal readings and group discussions.

STUDY SKILLS: Grades 5-8

The emphasis of this course is using practical and proven strategies to build better study skills. Organization

methods and tips, listening skills, memorization techniques, time management, note-taking methods, test-taking strategies and research skills are included. Each student prepares a research project from concept to final draft.

Throughout the course, individual learning styles, strengths and weaknesses are considered.

SUMMER READING: Grades 5-8

The goals of this course are to improve reading comprehension, enhance the reading experience through discussion and critical thinking and to motivate students to read more. Reading selections are based on both

reading for pleasure and challenge and at least one novel is from the La Jolla Country Day School summer reading list. Students complete at least three novels and several short stories. Class activities include

discussion, reading rounds, book reviews and talks, oral reading, chapter quizzes and essay tests.

WRITING WORKSHOP: Grades 5-8

This workshop focuses on discussions of grammar and rules of writing, with the majority of each class spent writing. Students have an opportunity to meet with the instructor and other students during the process of

FOCUSING ON GRAMMAR: Grades 5-8

Grammar is that system of principles and rules that allows us to organize our words and sentences into

coherent, meaningful language. Grammatical usage "errors" occur whenever any of us violate those principles or rules of grammatical organization. This course explores the usage problems associated with contemporary

grammar in both speech and writing. The class will cover:

KEYBOARDING: Grades 5-7

Join Mr. Mitchell (Middle School Tech Teacher) for one, or two weeks of essential typing/keyboarding practice. Typing is a necessary skill in middle school and beyond, and learning to type CORRECTLY and proficiently is

an academic benefit. Come spend a few hours per day learning techniques and strategies and how to apply them. There will be lots of practicing, coaching, reminding, help, encouragement and by the end of the week,

you will be much better at typing then when you arrive. For comparison purposes, fifth graders have a goal of 30 words per minute while sixth graders are aiming for 40 wpm. This class is open to students who will be in fifth,

sixth or seventh grade next school year. If you need guidance for learning to type right, then take this class.

ROCK CLIMBING: Grades 5-8

A five-day indoor rock climbing course taught by the professional staff at Mesa Rim Indoor Climbing Center with the help of Mr. Todd Mitchell, MS Technology teacher and US Rock Climbing Club Advisor. It will be an action-

packed week where students will learn a variety of rock climbing skills in a safe and supervised setting. Following morning classes and a short lunch period, supervised transportation will be provided to and from

Mesa Rim.

This camp focuses on:

• Leadership skills, working together with others and building trust with fellow classmates • Building self-confidence by challenging one’s self both physically and mentally

• Rock climbing skills such as knot tying, proper equipment use, belaying (being a principal source of protection to other climbers), and overall climbing technique.

• Fun, physical fitness through one of America’s fastest growing sports!

TEEN ESTEEM YOGA WORKSHOP: Grades 5-8

This workshop is especially for girls between grades 5-8. Each class includes creative yoga, guided

conversations and journaling. Yoga improves physical strength and flexibility, reduces stress and emphasizes compassion, caring and trust through non-competitive physical movement. Combined with meaningful

conversations and activities, these classes will nourish a positive self-esteem and help girls develop a deeper awareness around topics including self-image, stress, friendships, nutrition and more. Please bring a mat or

large towel and water to each class.

Classes will be taught by Erica Rood M.A. Ed. Erica is a certified Teen Wisdom Life Coach and yoga instructor,

with over ten years of classroom teaching experience. Erica is committed to supporting girls through adolescence. She maintains a private coaching practice where she uses specific coaching methods that enable

girls to set a purposeful direction for their lives and reach their goals. She also creates and teaches yoga empowerment programs for girls and mother-daughter pairs.

INTRODUCTION TO TAIKO DRUMMING: Ages 8 - 14

Introduction to Taiko Drumming will introduce children to both the joy and discipline of Taiko drumming in a fun,

structured environment. A cross between martial arts and music, Taiko classes will teach children about Taiko fundamentals and form, respect for instructor and one another and the spirit of Taiko.

CIRCUS CAMP: Grades 5-8

Building on the success of the spring after school program in the Lower School, San Diego Circus Center is

offering a new Middle School circus camp. In this fun-filled, action packed camp, students will learn the basics of circus arts, and some disciplines include stilt walking, tumbling, juggling, unicylcing, aerial silk/lyra/trapeze

(pending the facility) and partner acrobatics. Students will gain spatial awareness and the ability to manage their body with confidence. Circus helps build a foundation for muscle strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and

posture. This exciting and enriching program is designed to nurture each student’s self-esteem and foster self-discipline, creative thinking, trust and teamwork. We provide a supportive environment that encourages

students to have the confidence to try new things and to believe in their own abilities as they express their talents and have fun both on the ground and in the air.

Active Learning Services’ video game creation camps offer programs that use our custom designed curriculum

KODU VIDEO GAME CREATION ADVENTURE STYLE (presented by Active Learning Services): Ages 7-16

In this program, campers will have the option of learning how to program using a Microsoft Xbox controller! Children will create their own cool custom world and navigate inside this location. Within this world, campers will

create tasks that need to be completed in order to progress to the next level. Some of those tasks include escaping a sewer maze, survival mode, outwitting rivals, creating decoys and collecting bonus items all while having fun and using their creativity. The use of a Xbox controller is optional and supplied by the camper.

High school credit can be earned upon satisfactory completion of these full-year and semester courses. La Jolla

Country Day School students must have prior approval from the Upper School director to take any full-year courses other than those that satisfy the fine arts requirement. Students attending other schools during the

This general chemistry class is a laboratory course intended primarily for those who plan to take additional advanced science courses in high school and college. Addressing itself to the properties and behavior of matter,

this rigorous course employs a combination of lecture, discussion, and laboratory formats. Specific topic areas include atomic and molecular theory, phases of matter, atomic structure, periodic properties, energy of chemical

and nuclear reactions, chemical kinetics, equilibrium reactions, solubility and ionization, oxidation and reductions, electrochemical cells, and organic chemistry.

PHYSICS

This lab science course promotes the conceptual understanding of major physics principles. Students develop a solid foundation in the scientific method through performance, analysis, observation, and discussion of

experiments. These skills are used to explore themes in physics such as motion and forces, momentum and energy, electricity and magnetism, characteristics of waves, sound and light, and optics. Students conduct

EXPOSITORY WRITING: Grades 9-12

Expository writing helps students translate personal intentions into clear prose. Skills acquired in expository

writing carry across the curriculum, so that writing well stimulates the imagination as it gives shape to thought. Students write essays in various modes of discourse, including comparison/contrast, cause/effect and

classification, with an emphasis on argumentation and literary analysis. Students also learn the process involved in writing a research paper. The basic requirements of good writing — logic and coherence, originality

and depth of thought, a strong thesis, diction, tone, proofreading and revisions — are also covered.

ELECTRONICS TRACK: ELECTRONICS AND PROGRAMMING MICROCONTROLLERS (GRADES 5-8)

The Electronics track offers an introductory overview for new students and a refresher course for returning

students, leading into a more advanced use of electronic components and microcontrollers to make personalized robotic creations. This track is designed for students who are beginners as well as those who have some

previous experience with electronics, computer programming or robotics. The program is hands on, allowing each student to create a personalized project that meets the level of challenge appropriate for each individual.

The same course is offered in the morning or afternoon. If your child is going to attend all day, choose a second course for the afternoon such as Computing Track or Industrial Design Track.

Students will begin by reviewing the theories and concepts of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamentals of microprocessors, their place in history and society, and the syntax and structure required to

program them. Once we have established an understanding of these concepts, participants will advance to developing their own unique projects using the Arduino microcontroller (a small programmable computer on an

COMPUTING TRACK: CREATING YOUR OWN VIDEO GAMES (GRADES 5-8)

We know that middle school students love playing video games, but they can also learn to make their own! We

will introduce students to computer science in a way that connects to the things that they already like and are familiar with.

We will learn about computer programming by making games based on Angry Birds, Mario, Minecraft, or other favorites. Additionally, students will be introduced to the tools they need to program custom modifications and

servers in Minecraft. Create and design your own ‘mods’ and implement them into the real program. Also develop your design and abstract reasoning skills by crafting unique changes to the program world as you see

fit.

For new students, we begin with Scratch in order to introduce them to the syntax and concepts behind code.

Scratch grew out of the MIT Media Lab, and offers students of all ages a visual way to understand some of the more complicated concepts behind computer programming.

As students become ready to advance, we will teach them to write code on their own using Java and the Java-based language Processing. Processing allows students a way to see a visual playback of the code that they are

writing, so that the sometimes challenging task of typing code offers immediate feedback.

This class is open to students of varying skill levels. Students will be given beginner to more advanced activities,

based on their experience level.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN TRACK: FORMS, MODELING AND 3D PRINTING (GRADES 5-8)

In the Industrial Design track, we will learn about the processes involved in designing and creating physical products, allowing students to 3D model and fabricate their own products with professional tools.

The same course is offered in the morning or afternoon. If your child is going to attend all day, choose a second course for the afternoon such as Electronics Track or Computing Track.

In this class, students will explore product development, design techniques, and 3-dimensional modeling methods. Through hands-on projects, students will advance to learning how to create forms in a 3D modeling

environment and will use a 3D printer to make final physical replicas of their designs. While exploring methods of visual communication, students will develop an applied understanding of industry-standard 3D modeling

software, and design preparation for CNC machines. This class will introduce students to cutting edge technologies, while exploring the past, current and future reality of industrial design, personal manufacturing and

3D printing.

This project-based program will walk the students through a learning experience that concludes in the

manufacturing of a useful object of the students’ own design.

INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING: Grades 5-8

A five-day indoor rock climbing course taught by the professional staff at Mesa Rim Indoor Climbing Center with the help of Mr. Todd Mitchell, MS Technology teacher and US Rock Climbing Club Advisor. It will be an action-

packed week where students will learn a variety of rock climbing skills in a safe and supervised setting. Following morning classes and a short lunch period, supervised transportation will be provided to and from

Mesa Rim.

This camp focuses on:

• Leadership skills, working together with others and building trust with fellow classmates • Building self-confidence by challenging one’s self both physically and mentally

SUMMER YOUTH FOOTBALL CAMP

La Jolla Country Day School is hosting a 4-day, non-pad youth football skills camp for players between the ages

of 10 to14 and 6 to 9. Led by the enthusiastic Country Day Football coaching staff, which includes over 100 total years of coaching experience, campers will work on the fundamentals of football while having a fun and safe

experience. The ultimate goal of this camp is to help ignite a passion for football as campers prepare for the beginning of their youth football season the following week. By the end of the week, campers will be better

prepared both physically and mentally for a fantastic season in the fall.

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVER SIT Y The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is pleased

to host its academic day program at La Jolla Country Day School again this

summer,offering one session

SESSION 1: June 28 - July 17

The CTY La Jolla program is open to qualifying students who have

completed at least the 2nd grade and have not yet entered 6th grade. Students attend the program from Monday through Friday, and return home

each afternoon. Spaces are still open, though fill on a first come, first served basis.

To Qualify

Students qualify for the Johns Hopkins program by taking the S-CAT, an above-grade level test. Eligibility is valid from the

year students test through the summer after 6th grade, even if they choose not to attend the program immediately.
