Council Meeting – April 20, 2015

Present: Pastor, Ed Sitler, Joan Sitler, Todd Felter, Ken Rumzie, Kathleen Rumzie, Joan Pignataro, Faith Dzurovcik, Vicar Glen, and Jamie Hovick. President Ed Sitler called the meeting to order at 7:01 pm. Pastor opened with prayer.

Motion to approve the minutes from February. (Sitler, Rumzie)

Treasurer’s Report – Report submitted by Dave Antolick March 2015 - Opening Balance $14,090.62 Total Income $63,546.19 Operating Expenses $46,065.81 Balance $31,571.00

Endowment – Not present. Elder’s – Joan Sitler Elders met to discuss convention and Pastor news. Pastor was elected to SELC President. Pastor Krueger will run the call process for Zion. Call meeting will be on Saturday, May 30 and 31. Council and Elders to attend the 1

st meeting. Second meeting will be a Congregational meeting. Survey

will be given out. Call process takes about a 1 year. Pastor will remain serving until a call is received. Pastor applied to Medicare. Concordia would delete medical portion when Medicare was notified. Stewardship – Kathy Rumzie No report. Christian Education – Faith Dzurovick Easter pageant had 12 children participate. Lessons resumed this week. Faith will do the lesson part and Mrs. Lyman will do the music part. TD Bank account has Debbie Bobyack as signer. Faith is trying to convert the account. VBS letter will be coming out soon. Property Management –Todd Felter Work day accomplished a lot of jobs. Janitor was dismissed. Cleaning company was found to clean the church. They were given a checklist. Look into getting a lock box for the keys. Still to be done: Eagle Scout project doesn’t appear to be happening re: painting the parking lot. Preschool –Joan Pignataro Registration is at 81 spots. Registration is still going on. Contracts will be discussed at the next Preschool meeting. State came back and passed inspection. Preschool planted the flowers out back.

Evangelism –Karen & David Dooley Not present. Luther League – Pastor Pastor Weatherall is hosting the confirmation retreat this weekend. So far, there will be 3 kids in attendance plus Vicar. Luther League convention will be July 24-26

th in Parma, Ohio.

LWIM – Kathy Rumzie LWIM Mother Daughter banquet is May 15

Vicar – Vicar Glen glen.triplett@ctsfw.edu Pastor and Vicar split up Lenten services. There were three funerals. Vicar assisted with convention clean up and audio work. Vicar will be attending the confirmation retreat. Vicar will be preaching in Garfield. Pastor – Pastor will be preaching the next 3 Sundays. Convention thank you’s were coming in. Pastor Harrison posted a compliment on Facebook. May 2

Finding Meaning and Purpose

Life can be very harsh. We are not immune to experiencing floods, hurricanes,

tornadoes and other natural disasters. We can have trouble in our marriages, with

our finances, with our children, or with health issues etc. When things go bad in

life, we may ask the question, “What is the purpose of all this?” As we grow

spiritually, the answer becomes clearer. Through faith and the power of the Holy

Spirit working in our lives, we understand that we live in a world filled with sin

and in need of Jesus. In this dark world, Jesus is our light, rock, and refuge.

Through Jesus, God brings us into a relationship with Himself and gives strength

to overcome life’s challenges. Our relationship with Jesus gives us meaning and

purpose for our lives. Through faith, we understand that God created and

redeemed us out of His love and grace. As God’s created, called, and redeemed

people, we are free to participate in this relationship that God has created through

Jesus with joy and gratitude.

What a joy it is for us to think that our Heavenly Father chose us in Christ “before the [creation] of the world” (Ephesians 1:4)! To know that we were created by a

God Whose nature is to love gives us comfort and peace. Knowing that He wants

only the best for us and that what He wants us to do is always in our best interests

should give us great joy. In addition, what He does through us for others is

always best for them and for us. God does this for us even though we are sinful

and totally undeserving. It is only by the grace of God that we are blessed,

forgiven, and equipped to do His work on earth.

The world tries to find meaning in the temporary and material things of this world.

Having and reaching the American Dream is the priority for many people. Living

in large homes, driving luxurious cars, and accumulating large retirement

accounts show that you have fulfilled the American Dream. Unfortunately, those

who have done well according to the world’s standards often find they don’t have

the joy they thought would fulfill them. They find out the hard way that joy and

contentment can’t be bought.

Through faith, we are able to understand that only a relationship with Jesus can

provide meaning and purpose for our lives. Faith enables us to see the blessings God bestows on us. It is always from God to us. God is the giver; we are the

receivers. We can never run out of things for which to thank Him. When the

Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the truth and we see God at work, we change from

being self-centered to being Christ-centered as we live to please and honor Him,

demonstrating our thankfulness by how we live our lives.

efforts by the ILC, the

Selbständige Evangelisch

Lutherische Kirche (SELK)

and the Missouri Synod,

with representatives from

the North American

Lutheran Church and the

Evangelical Lutheran

Church in America also participating.

“It was great for our international guests and visitors to be here, to allow

them to make connections with one another and get to know each other

better,” said the Rev. Dr. Joel Lehenbauer, executive director of the LCMS

Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR).

By working with the Synod president’s office and in keeping with LCMS 2013

Convention Resolution 4-04, the CTCR (chaired by the Rev. Dr. Lawrence R.

Rast Jr. , president of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind.); its

executive assistant, Jackie Milligan; and Lehenbauer were praised for their

efforts in coordinating and organizing the conference. These efforts included

assistance with international travel, as some participants had to overcome

geographic, bureaucratic and many other barriers to attend.

“This conference is a huge sign of the catholicity of the Lutheran church,”

said SELK Bishop Hans-Jörg Voigt, who also is the ILC’s chairman. “A

central theme of this conference is that we confessional Lutherans

remember, repent and celebrate the Reformation, and I’m very thankful to be

a part of that.”

The ILC is an association of established confessional Lutheran church

bodies that proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the basis of an

unconditional commitment to the Holy Scriptures as the inspired and infallible

Word of God and to the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of

Concord as the true and faithful exposition of the Word of God.

The conference followed the dedication of the International Lutheran Center

at the Old Latin School here May 3, which the ILC’s executive committee is

considering for its new headquarters. Additional information on the

Lutherans from around globe confer in Wittenberg

By Roger Drinnon WITTENBERG, Germany — Confessional Lutheran church leaders from every continent except Antarctica discussed burgeoning churches in the global South and East as well as challenges in the West during the International Conference on Confessional Leadership in the 21st Century, held here May 6-7. Representatives from 41 countries representing 23 million Lutherans worldwide converged at the very cradle of the Reformation not long before 2017, when Lutherans will celebrate the Reformation’s 500th anniversary. Under the theme, “Celebrating the Reformation Rightly: Remembrance, Repentance, Rejoicing,” discussions ranged from the challenges of spreading the Gospel in Western countries to its rapid growth in places like Africa, South America, the Far East and many others. (A video overview is available at video.lcms.org/archives/3091.) “We have representatives here from Ethiopia, Madagascar, Tanzania, Cameroon, Cambodia, Malaysia, Peru, Papua New Guinea … all over the world,” said the Rev. Dr. Albert B. Collver III, LCMS director of Regional Operations for the Office of International Mission and executive secretary of the International Lutheran Council (ILC). “And yet, now the work begins for us, as we hope to reach others amid the challenges presented by post-modernity and a rise in paganism.” Collver said the mission field in the West is a major challenge for confessional Lutherans amid a decline of Christianity in Europe and the U.S. “As someone coming to Wittenberg for the first time, it is a pleasure for me to see how it is important for our churches to be together, to make our confession known to all, particularly as we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation,” said the Rev. Dr. Wakseyoum Idosa, president of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus. “This gathering of church leaders is a sign for us to go on to the next 500 years of the Reformation. The Reformation’s message to the world is that, according to the context we are in now, we need to be faithful to the Word of God as we serve God’s people.”
