Coordination 2
Super Bowl XLVIFrequency Coordination Goals
Act as a central clearinghouse of frequencies and requests
Maximize the number of users that can successfully operate in a limited area
Identify and help resolve conflicts

Frequency CoordinationWhat do we coordinate?
Almost everything in the city during the week of the event held at NFL Venues• Fixed and portable microwave links• Low Power devices:
including wireless mics, intercoms, IFBs• RPU: 2-ways, high power IFBs• Wireless LANs; 802.11a/b/g• Nextel and Cellular: COWS
Need contact info but not necessarily frequencies• Public Safety Radios –
Tag undercover users, voting receivers and high power bases/repeaters near stadium
• business band radios

Coordination 6
Frequency CoordinationWhat do we NOT coordinate?
Family and General Mobile Radio Service radios• New ‘CB’ radio service• Use at your own risk!
Amateur Radio Cellular/Nextel type portable radios Public Safety radios –
• Includes anyone in uniform and with public safety credentials

Super Bowl XLVFrequency Coordination
Active Media Day (Tuesday), Game Day (Sunday) at Stadium and all week at Media Hotel & NFLX• We realize that Media Day is more of a news event vs.
game day is a production event • impacts scheduling of users equipment
1st Come, 1st Served with frequencies• BUT - we can't protect what we don't know about• If close to venue, get frequency list for fixed equipment
(intercoms, studio mics, IFBs, etc) in NOW• Request what you need…
But remember "Frequency Karma" • request only what you really need

Coordination 8
Frequency CoordinationThe Coordination process
We start with base database • Input from local SBE Coordinator and GDC • Add local FCC licensed BAS frequencies
Add local microwave home channel plan
Individual databases for Venues/Events• NFL Media Center• Super Bowl Media Day• Super Bowl Game
Post Game Only
Database ConstructionVHF/UHF Communications
Initial database is based on FCC licenses• Questionable accuracy – Need to verify:
Users Stations license more than they use How is this devices used When is it typically used Home channel plan? Frequencies Bandwidth Fixed TX Sites (Repeaters, Bases) RX only sites

Submit your needs• List equipment you have to fill those needs• e-mail needs and available frequencies to us
Identify nearby sites/facilities to protect• Need Address or Latitude/Longitude
Studios RX sites –
• ENG: 2/6.5/7/13 GHz• VHF/UHF “voting sites”
Database ConstructionLocal Fixed Sites
List of frequencies in use at critical fixed sites• Wireless mics• IFBs• Intercoms• Etc.

Database ConstructionENG Microwave
ENG microwave• What bands are in use
2/2.5 GHz – assumed to be digital modulation 6.5 GHz
• Analog vs. digital modulation• 8 vs. 25 MHz wide channel spacing
7 GHz 13 GHz
• Bandwidth used: 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 20, 25 MHz• “Home” channel plan used?• Standardized offsets and/or polarities used?• Receive site locations

Database ConstructionGather and Submit Key Contacts
Key Contacts include• Engineering• News Operations• ENG Control Points• Super Bowl Coordinators
Required contact information• Names• Title• Phone number(s)
include after hours number• E-mail address

Coordination 16
We enter frequencies into database• Identify conflicts and help resolve them • You receive a confirmation e-mail listing frequencies we
have added to database• Process Requests and Confirm Frequencies
Initially, you will NOT get all devices approved at all venues.• Have to be fair to all users• Identify hardware carried by critical users• Identify hardware needed at a specific events/venues
Operations may be restricted to Places, Dates and Times

RF Best Practices Use Minimum power necessary to operate Install Isolators/Circulators on
transmitters if possible Location of receive sites
• ENG RO Sites• VHF/UHF “voting” receivers
Plan, Communicate & Execute the Plan
Maximum occupied bandwidth is 150 KHz for wideband devices

Slide 33
KV3 This shows a "Notch Type" duplexer which is NOT recommended. Using one of these will limit the ERP of the TX to 2 watts.
The recommended Duplexer, a "Bandpass Duplexer" is similar except the filters ONLY PASS THE DESIRED RX OR TX FREQUENCIES
Should also show an ISOLATOR to the TXKarl Voss, 4/1/2010

Frequency CoordinationWhat to expect on Media Day and Game Day
What to expect on Media Day and Game Day The check-in process:
• pre-coordinated vs. non-coordinated lines• mandatory frequency and transmitter check • frequency selection (if necessary)• Bringing a copy of the coordination notice will speed up
check in process Radio tagging:
• No RF• POST GAME ONLY• OK to use
Please, bring ONLY the frequencies and radios you have been confirmed to use on Media and Game days!

Frequency Coordination“RF War Games”
The Ultimate RF test for everyone!• Planning becomes useless with poor
installation practices• Used to identify and solve problems
such as intermod• Planned for Thursday, 2/2 at 12:30p• Possibly another on Saturday -
depending on the earlier test

Frequency CoordinationOther things to be aware of
STA has been applied for TV channels 18 & 20? (494-500 and 506-512 MHz)• LOCAL WIRELESS MICS, IFBS or INTERCOMS in these
bands?
700 MHz operations• No Part 74 use of these frequencies anymore• Don’t try to request or use a frequency above 698 MHz
Wireless LANS (802.11 b/g) TV Pickup and Public Safety in 2.5 GHz• All WLAN Access Points MUST be turned OFF
or coordinated before use
