DEAR PARISHIONERS...
Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day. Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tribute to mothers dates back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians once celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this honor was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday. Today, we honor all mothers on the second Sunday in May, which is designated Mother’s Day. We do special things for them to show them how much we appreciate all the things that they have done for us in our lives. From day one, our mothers have nurtured and cared for us. They chose life for us. They have helped us grow into the people that we are today. Being called a “mother” is not simply a title for one who gives birth to children. Motherhood defines a relationship and in that relationship reflects the tenderness of God. For this reason, whether biological or otherwise, all women share in the relationship of motherhood that should reflect the tenderness of God in the world. Today we honor that special vocation of motherhood on this Mother’s Day remembering all moms. We should also remember today, Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, who said “Yes” to God’s call for her to be the mother of the Son of Man. Mary is a wonderful example of the vocation of motherhood, that when God calls you to be a mother, the answer is always YES! Fr. Michael

This weekend, both our Men's and Youth Choir finish up their 2014-2015 season. We would like to extend a huge thank you
both to Ron Swanson and Carly Tebo for their work with each of their musical groups. We would like to extend a
special thank you to Ron Swanson for his past leadership with
the Men's Choir. Ron and his wife Julie will be leaving the area to retire in Florida. We are most
grateful for his years of leadership and dedication to the Men's Choir. Blessings as you begin a new

Baby Bottles Are Back!
Starting this weekend, there will be an
opportunity for everyone to help Bella
Medical Clinic. The baby bottles will be
available in the Gathering Space. During
the month of May fill it with whatever coins
or currency you can provide and then return
it to St. Raphael by the end of May. The bottles are
used over and over again and cost over $1 a piece, so
please, if you take a baby bottle, please return it.
New Marian Vestment (pictured on cover)
This weekend we are pleased to showcase our newest Marian Vestment that was redesigned
by parishioner Catherine Ellenbecker. This vestment was originally donated to the UWO Theater Department. Kathleen Donnelly of the UWO Theater Dept wanted the vestment to go to the proper hands. Catherine was inspired to take on the project after Fr. Doug connected with her granddaughter Kyla. Fr. Doug asked Kyla, "Can you ask if she will repair this Marian vestment?". That moment sealed the deal for Catherine.
New fabric was purchased for the chasible and the original features of the vestment were delicately removed and repositioned on the new piece. Sue Kerr was asked to use her experience with machine embroidery to embellish the vestment with the words of the Magnicat. (The Canticle of Mary)
It is truly a one-of-a kind piece. We are so grateful to Catherine and Sue for their determination to re-create and re-purpose this vestment for our parish Community. Happy Mother's Day to all women who
nurture us each end every day.

Reflecting on the Scriptures (Acts 10:25-48, Ps.98:1-4,1 John 4:7-10, John 15:9-17)
“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.” --- John 15:9-17
In a previous time in my life I have been a bit of a grammar geek as my undergrad degree is in English and communications. With that preface, I simply would like to say that love can be both a noun and a verb. And subconsciously I am aware of how the word is used---a habit by profession and background. Therefore, I am so very aware that John, both in the Gospel and in his letters, writes about love with most of the emphasis on love as a verb. Love calls us to action, to do.
Love initiates. I must open myself to receive that amazing love of God which is perpetually offered, and then allow it to flow through me to others. God’s love reaches out to meet me at my point of deepest need. Likewise, I, too, must see the need of others and respond. Once I have experienced God’s love, it should flow out of me, just as it flows out of the very nature of God, just as it flows from the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. God loves me personally---by name. And that love spills over in me to love others. And just as God left God’s own fingerprint on me, I am to leave His fingerprint of love on others.
When grounded in love, loving others is as natural as breathing. This extraordinary love gives without strings attached. I know that it can be rejected, but where it is received, it awakens the best in the other. Love begets love.
“We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and God is shining through it all the
time.” May you and I be the transparency of love through which God’s love is cast on others.

SUMMER MEMORIAL MASSES SCHEDULE
The Oshkosh Catholic Parishes would like to continue the tradition of celebrating Summer
Memorial Masses at each of our three
Catholic Cemeteries; Riverside Catholic, Sacred Heart and Calvary Cemeteries. There
will be one Mass held in each month of June, July and August.
We want to encourage all parish families to
participate and pray for our family members and friends who have moved on to life with Jesus Christ in heaven.
Please come even if you do not presently have loved ones in a particular cemetery. Your prayers and participation in
these Masses is a powerful witness to our Catholic faith in a
life beyond death with Christ.
Bring lawn chairs and plan to visit the graves of loved ones.
If it rains, we will postpone and plan another date that we
will announce in the bulletins.

about the friendships women make through the
seasons of their lives, using the story of Ruth and
Naomi as a guide. Listen to the women who have
gone before and consider what wisdom you would
share with those who come after.
The day begins with an (optional) Mass at 8:00 am
at Most Blessed Sacrament, St. Peter site, with
breakfast to follow in Aquinas Hall. Vinal will then
guide us through our seasons of friendships.

Nepal Relief Collection
A 7.8‐magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in the late
morning of April 25, toppling buildings and homes,
causing widespread panic, and claiming thousands of
lives.
Our Church mourns the terrible suffering of our
brothers and sisters affected by this powerful
earthquake. Please join with the Catholic community
across the United States in responding to our suffering
brothers and sisters through a special parish collection
for the work of Catholic Relief Services in Nepal.
St. Raphael will have envelopes available for this
collection in the Gathering Space. You may also
donate online at crs.org.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (1 JOHN 4:7-10; JN. 15:9-17)
“Love one another.” We hear the words but do we really think about what they mean? In our day- to-day lives? Our interactions with friends and family, people we live and work with? In English the word ‘love’ often takes on a romantic connotation (as in “an office romance”). But the Oxford Dictionary defines love as: (1) deep affection, fondness; (2) sexual passion; (3) sexual relations; and (4) beloved one, sweetheart. These days we hear a lot of stories from Hollywood and the world of politics about Nos. 2, 3 and 4 but, unfortunately, we too often forget about definition No. 1. For example, if we are ‘fond’ of someone we will act toward them in a way that reflects that. There are things we will, and will not, do. If we hold someone in deep affection we are not likely to enter into an unhealthy competition with them. On the contrary, we may actually find ourselves wanting them to win! And if we are fond of someone we will speak well of them instead of gossiping about them and become justifiably upset if we hear someone else putting them down. Another clue. In our culture the word ‘love’ usually comes back around to us and what makes us happy. But God always points to what makes the other happy. For example, what if the other is our boss? An honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay will probably make almost any boss happy. And what if the other is our customer? How happy would he or she be if we delivered a faulty product or failed to live up to our promises? Or what if the other is our employee? No doubt it would make them very happy if we provided a safe work environment and expressed genuine gratitude for their work.
There are many ways to “…love one another”, but we must first learn to understand what the words mean. God invites us to hold one another in deep affection and to work for the good of the other. What would our world look like if we responded to God’s invitation?

Infants accept the faith through the faith of their parents, so St. Raphael the Archangel Parish offers group sessions to prepare parents for the baptism ceremony and for lead-ing their children in a life of faith. Prayers Needed
Please keep the people of Burundi, Africa in your prayers. Burundi is in turmoil as the current president attempts to run for a third
term of office which is not allowed by the Burundian constitution. The president has been corrupt and has ignored the urgent needs of the people. Burundians are now demonstrating in protest and much violence is taking place. Several people have been killed and many have been thrown into prison. Please pray for our current Burundian students at Lourdes, their families in Burundi and for all the Burundian people that peace will soon be restored in Burundi. Bless O Lord, Your children in Burundi. Dry their tears and bring hope into their hearts. Bring peace to their country and still the unrest and violence. Bless us, O lord, and heal your country of Burundi.
