DEAR PARISHIONERS...
It’s hard to believe that it is already March and the Third week of Lent. There have been so many opportunities in our parish for us to deepen our knowledge and faith through several talks about our history as a Catholics through the centuries, our relevance and mission in the world today, and digging into the depths of our spiritual and scriptural traditions. We thank all the speakers who led the talks, especially Rich Curran who led the Parish Mission and Prof. Brian Smith who continues to lead our Soup and Study series on the history of the Catholic Church. We also thank Midge Robbeloth for facilitating our ongoing Little Rock Scripture Study on Thursdays and all the many volunteers organizing and setting up for these events.
This weekend the Knights of Columbus will be looking for men interested in joining the organization. The Knights have a rich history that dates back more than a century of fraternal charity which assists a variety of needs within the United States and several places around the world. The Knights are a great avenue for men seeking a way to reach out to the community as a volunteer. Please consider joining this great tradition and continuing through them continual outreach to the community.
As you walked through the main entry way toward the nave of the church, you may have noticed a large wood cross immediately to the right of the main doors. You may have also noticed that it is covered in band aids. The first through fifth grade religious education students each received a band aid and wrote their names on it and stuck it to the cross. This was to help the students recognize that the hurts we receive in life are also suffered with us by Christ’s passion and death. This was part of the preparation for a Stations of the Cross video, which they watched the second half of their class.
Have a blessed Lent.
Fr. Michael

Reflecting on the Scriptures
I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods
besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in
the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. --- Ex. 20:2-4
Chocolate. Satisfying, creamy chocolate. Sometimes I get a craving that just won’t go away. So, is there any chocolate within reach?
How do I become free from the seemingly benign addictions in my life? What types of things am I talking about? Exercising, video games, reading, fishing, gardening, coffee, the internet, smoking, shopping, my cell phone, pride, jealousy, sports, work, hunting, TV, alcohol, gossiping, managing diet/weight, cleaning, my agenda/schedule, anger, busyness, complaining, organizing, controlling, unforgiveness. And there are many more. All of these satisfy, or gratify, a hole within me that I’m trying to fill. And I end up being a slave to whatever addiction has me in its grip.
And this is not the vision, the life that the Lord wants for me. He does not wish for me to be a slave to any-thing. And yet I allow myself to become enslaved to desires and to gratification—yes, and even to chocolate!
My Lenten journey is to become “free”- free from whatever I’ve allowed to control me, to own me. What keeps me from loving others? Jesus himself lived in inner freedom, and he gave His life away every day, and in the end, He gave His life on the cross - for me. Am I free to give my life away? Am I able to think about the needs of others before my own? Christ is “the way, the truth, and the life” and does my life reflect the freedom of loving as Jesus did?
To be free is to escape all of those addictions that keep me tethered to this world. How free am I?

Challenge of Luther and Vatican’s response; spread of Luther’s ideas (Calvin, Zwingli, Anabaptists); Council of Trent’s response to Protestantism -- clearer definitions of sacraments, scripture and tradi-tion, greater concentration of authority in papacy; grace vs. works, 100 years of wars involving re-ligion after death of Luther. Help is needed in the kitchen heating up soup and with setting up Good Samaritan Hall and clean-up after. are often seasonal. This week we pray for people who struggle to feed their
families during the hungry season— when food is in short supply—and we
commit to acting for the common good.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – “You shall not have other gods besides me.” The story is told of a wealthy tourist who came upon a fisherman sitting in the sun, leaning lazily on his boat. “Why don’t you go out and fish?”, the tourist inquired. “I have all the fish I need”, said the fisherman. “But if you catch more fish you can make more money.” “Why would I do that?”, the fisherman asked. “So that you can buy more boats.” “Why?” “So that you can catch more fish, make more money, buy more boats and hire more workers.” “Why?” “So that you can take it easy and do whatever you want?” “But I am doing that now,” the fisherman replied, wondering how the tourist could possibly be so stupid. The fisherman used the boat to meet his needs. He owned the boat rather than letting the boat own him. The tourist, on the other hand, was obsessed with the idea of making money. Money, and what-ever it took to make more of it, owned him. Three young professionals started their own firm. They worked 10-12 hours a day, seven days a week, preparing proposals and responding to requests from potential clients. After several months of this they decided to make a new rule. Each would take one weekend plus one additional day off each month. There would be no client calls, no stopping by the office “just in case”, no checking e-mails. Why? Because they realized that the work had be-gun to own them; now they would own the work. It’s easy to forget why we do the work that we do. It’s easy to forget family and friends – even our own health – when we allow our work to become our god. In John’s Gospel we are given a rare glimpse of Jesus’ anger. The money changers were supposed to be assisting the people. Instead, they were using the people to make a profit. Money had become their god. “You shall not have other gods besides me.” Why do I do the work that I do? Do I own my job, or does my job own me?

6:30 pm St. Raphael Church
Deacon Steve and Peg are married almost 43 years, have raised their three children, all who are married, and are now enjoying the
blessing of 18 grandchildren. Steve is a Pastoral Associate at the Catholic Tri-Parishes in Calumet County. Peg is the Family & Married Life Coordinator at the Diocese of Green Bay. They live in Kaukauna and are members of St. Katherine Drexel Parish.
There are a variety of ways to pray. Individuals have personal preferences. But what about praying as a couple. Married couples often express a desire to deepen their prayer life, or perhaps even wish to begin a prayer and don’t know how. Couples can discover ways to pray that each will find meaningful. The presentation will cover aspects of prayer and various ways to pray through stories, songs and scripture. St. Raphael Blood
