2 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

IN OUR PARISH

Have you been partying for eight days? Do you realize that Easter is celebrated as an octave, that is for 8 days, from Easter Sunday to through Divine Mercy Sunday? Further- more the season of Easter is 50 days. It is time to continue to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, to allow ourselves to live the fact that Jesus is risen from the dead. Watch for this in

our Sunday celebrations, as we are in white vestments, continue with our Easter environment, and have readings about the resurrected Christ and the forming of the early church.

A huge thank you to all those who helped with our Holy Week and Easter celebrations. Thanks to our environment team, musicians, deacons, RCIA team, liturgical ministers, greeters, worship commission, our “MC” (Seminarian Michael Thiel), volunteers who set up and take down chairs, multi-media team, all who invited someone to come to Mass, and countless other volunteers who helped in so many ways.

What a joy it was to baptize three adults and two children in our Easter Vigil service. Additionally, we received into the Catholic Church and confirmed 6 adults. These are parishioners that were baptized in another Christian faith and have decided to join the Catholic faith. Many of these, interestingly, come in because they recently married, or about to marry, a Catholic. Also we confirmed one adult, who was raised Catholic and now decided he was ready to be confirmed. We welcome these people into full communion with the Catholic Church.

In the coming weeks we will celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, First Communion and Marriage. This is certainly a vibrant and alive church in receiving new adult members and continued celebration of the sacraments. Let us continue to be a church of invitation. Know that, as an adult, if you are thinking about becoming baptized, considering becoming Catholic, have not received the Sacraments of First Communion or Confirmation or would like your marriage blessed in the Catholic Church, now is a good time to start the journey towards these sacraments Please contact us and we will get you started. We look forward to the day that we will celebrate a sacrament with you. If you know someone that might be open to one of these sacraments, please personally invite them and bring them to meet with us.

This second Sunday of Easter is also Divine Mercy Sunday. Through the writings of Saint Faustina and the words of Pope John Paul II, we recognize again the mercy of God in our lives. Please note the opportunity that Most Blessed Sacrament offers today for this chaplet. (please see page 8) This is a great opportunity to experience the options offered by area parishes as we are one Catholic Church.

May you continue to have a Happy and Blessed Easter.

Charitable Contributions You may not be aware... Current tax laws allow individuals to make contributions to their churches from their existing IRA accounts without any income tax implications or liabilities. This is something to re-member as we come to the end of the calendar year. Maintaining the money in an IRA until year’s end al-lows the money to earn the maximum amount of in-terest through the course of the year.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (JN. 20:19-31)

The disciples had the doors locked “…for fear of the Jews…”. Strange, considering that the disciples were themselves Jews. Who were these “Jews” that they feared? Could it be that it was actually something inside themselves that they feared?

In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt said: “First of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself…” The disciples were paralyzed with fear, so much so that they locked the doors. But they could not lock out the fear that was in their hearts, the fear of what they had done, the fear of their own betrayal, their own cowardice, their own unbelief. They saw the evil that their fear had allowed to overtake them – the nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror of fear itself – and their fear became their reality.

Isn’t that what we do when we’re afraid? Build walls and put up fences to keep out those things we fear? Launch satellites to track those things which frighten us? Make laws which, while meant to keep us safe, only serve to keep us even more isolated in our fear? Lock our doors, unwilling to believe that that which we fear is as close to us as our own hand, as deep within as our own heart?

Jesus knew that no war, no fence, no security system or weapon of mass destruction could take away the fear. He knew that for the disciples to find peace outside themselves they must first find peace within. “Peace be with you,” He said.

Then He asked what must have seemed to them an impossibility. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” How could He send them to bring peace to others when they were too frightened to even unlock the door! His answer was simple. They must forgive – forgive themselves their own sins of cowardice and betrayal; forgive the sins of those against whom they had locked their doors. “[T]he only thing we have to fear is fear itself…” Of whom or what are we afraid? Can we forgive those we fear? Can we forgive ourselves?

Appalachian Craft Sale at St. Raphael Parish this weekend!

For the second year in a row, members of St. Raphael parish will either go to St. Vincent Mission in David, KY or help to support the work of the mission financially.

In anticipation of the mission trip to David, KY and in an effort to help ease the poverty of the people living in Appalachia as well as to support and encourage Appalachian art and artisans, our parish will host Sr. Kathleen and Sr. Ruth Ann from David Appalachian Crafts in David, Kentucky this weekend in Good Samaritan Hall. The craft show will be open from 3-6:30 pm on Saturday and from 8 am to 1 pm and 4-7:30 pm on Sunday.

Many of the artists showcased through David Appalachian Crafts are members of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and proudly display the Kentucky Crafted label from the Kentucky Arts Council.

All of the featured crafts are handmade. Items that are available for sale are quilts and other fabric items, hand-painted gourds, coal statues, wood carvings, baby items, jewelry and much more. David Appalachian Crafts has the goal of preserving the mountain heritage of the local Appalachian community. Artists supplement their income by making and selling their crafts at the David Craft Center, which is a part of St. Vincent Mission. www.davidappalachiancrafts.com.

2nd Sunday of Easter

Jesus Christ is risen. Alleluia!

What we celebrate on Easter Sunday we celebrate with equal joy for a full fifty days - seven times seven days, a week of weeks—until Pentecost.

The jubilant word “alleluia,” which comes to us from Hebrew, is not used at all during Lent.

We use it over and over again in this season, however, for as St. Augustine said, “We are an Easter people and ‘alleluia’ is our cry.”
