DEAR PARISHIONERS...

Guess what? Lent is only 10 days from today. The great news is that we have time to prepare. Since last Lent, life has been

hectic. And it’s easy to lose my way, my direction. Lent offers me a compass to find my way. From past experience, I’ve

learned that if I don’t prepare for Lent, I arrive on Ash Wednesday a little dazed, spending the first two weeks fumbling—

what am I going to do this Lent? So I lose two weeks. Anything worth doing is worth preparing for. I consider how God is

going to transform my life, with greater freedom, greater joy, deeper desires for love and service. If I want it, I will choose

it. I need to give myself to it, to the degree I really want it badly. So, in these days before Lent, I need to prepare my heart.

I prepare by realizing how much I want to grow in freedom, to lighten my spirit and experience some real joy, and how

much some parts of my life really need changing.

This means a sense of anticipation. These days before Lent are a time to start anticipating something wonderful that is

about to happen. My focus: what God wants to give me. My sense of excitement and anticipation will grow more easily if

I begin to imagine what God wants to give me. If I get too focused on myself, and what I am going to do or not do, I could

risk missing the gift God wants to give me. Grace comes from God, and God's great desire is to bless me. Then, it is easier

for me to imagine that what I really want to do is place myself in a space to receive what God wants to give me.

Taking some time to get ready for Lent will ensure that I’m not going to miss the first week or two of Lent, because I’m

just getting started. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, in only 10 days, but I want to be ready to really take off, rather than

just beginning to think about Lent on that day. Before I get to Ash Wednesday, I should start asking myself some

questions, "What does God want to give me this year?" This question requires that I slow down and listen to my inner

spirit.

And with Lent comes our well-loved St. Raphael fish frys! Many thanks in advance for the numerous people who come

together to prepare and serve our parish community, neighbors and friends. A sign that Lent is coming: our fish fry sign up

boards, located in the Gathering Space. Please join us in the fish fry fun!

Thank you to all for your donations of peanut butter and tuna to the Oshkosh Food Pantry. It is a great way to be the love

and hands of Christ to others.

A special invitation for this Sunday night, February 8 at 6 pm! We are having “Holy Hour” at St. Raphael. It is a time of

prayer with Jesus in the real presence before us. This is a time of quiet reflection, listening to the Lord, focusing on Him.

This peaceful time provides something we are so badly in need of: centeredness, focus, peace, prayer. Come, spend

some time with Jesus.

Enjoying the blessing of each of you,

Betty, Pastoral Associate

FEBRUARY 8, 2015 FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME | 5

Reflecting on the Scriptures (Job 7:1-7, Ps. 147:1-6, 1 Cor. 9:16-23, Mark 1:29-39) He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” --- Mark 1

The image of Jesus praying in a deserted place in the predawn darkness is a powerful reminder of the importance of carving out time and space to be by myself in God’s presence in the midst of chaos and busyness. If Jesus, with His great compassion and patience, His strong sense of mission and closeness to God, needed those times, how much more do I! Amidst all the excitement of seeing God at work, of being the conduit for the healing, restoring, and liberating power of God, Jesus needed time for stillness. From his prayer, He emerges energized and focused. It would have been so easy to have His movements dictated by the needs and desires of others or by their acclaim and approval. He could have chosen to stay where he was comfortable and allowed the people to come to Him. But instead He goes on to other villages seeking those in need and proclaiming the Kingdom of God in word and in deed.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus comes to Peter’s house, where He discovers Peter’s mother-in-law is sick and heals her. As a result, townspeople get wind of the healing and rush their sick loved ones to Peter’s house. The house is surrounded, and so is Jesus, who is so hemmed in; there is no quiet, no place to be with His Father. Jesus slips out quietly to the countryside in the wee morning hours, to pray.

Discovering Jesus’ absence, the disciples go looking for Him. Upon finding Him, the disciples confront Jesus, “Everybody is looking for you!” They think that Jesus’ work among the people trumps His need for quiet, for prayer.

Yet it is disordered to believe and live in such a way that prayer takes second-place to work, no matter what type of work it is. How sad it is that the disciples miss the mark on what is most important. And yet, am I that much different than the disciples?

Life presents a conundrum for us when we are faced with two or more seemingly good choices. Each healing Jesus does positively impacts them. But here’s the lesson: Doing good things can actually get in the way of serving God well. To serve God well, a person must not just do “good” things that others want him to do. Prayer AND action go hand–in-hand. I receive strength and focus from the Lord. I have to do what God calls me to. It may take prayer to discern what I am called to and what I must turn down/move away from---and some of them are good things!

Upon the disciples’ arrival, Jesus tells them that He is called to continue His ministry, not of healing, but of preaching, which is what he is called to. What can I learn from Jesus? What is needed to serve God well, then, is not endless good things that other people want from me. What is needed is prayer first. My time with Jesus, of connecting with Him is # 1 in my life. And after that, comes fidelity to just those few good things that fulfill that particular purpose to which the Lord has called me.

Betty Schwandt - Pastoral Associate

R U Support is a ministry to the recently unemployed and underemployed. We meet in Good Samaritan Hall at St. Raphael Parish on Monday morning from 8:30 – 10:30 am. All are welcome. Questions? Call Dennis Kotloski at 920-830-8980.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – Several years ago our parish started a new ministry. We called it “R U Support” – shorthand for “Recently Unemployed/Underemployed Support Group.” The idea was born when one of our staff members pointed out that, whether because of layoffs, plant closings or business relocations, it seemed that almost every day someone was coming in to tell us that he or she had lost their job. “We need a support group!” And we were off and running.

After only two meetings our group had already outgrown the space we had reserved for it. And although stories and circumstances varied, when Job said “Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery?” most attendees knew exactly what he meant. Unfortunately for Job, however, his friends were anything but a support group! Still, Job believed that God would take care of him.

In Mark’s Gospel we find Jesus healing and casting out demons – Peter’s mother-in-law and townspeople gathered at the door, even the people of neighboring villages. It would seem that, even without the internet, word traveled fast. Obviously there were many people in need of healing and many demons to be cast out.

Which brings us back to Job and our “R U Support” group. One reason the group is still growing is that people who have attended in the past are still recommending the group to new people today. Like Job and the people around Capernaum, the unemployed often feel themselves lost and alone, sick with worry and beset by demons of loss and diminishment. But they, too, believe that God will take care of them. “He cured many who were sick…and…drove out many demons…” And in churches and community centers, town halls and college campuses, God is doing precisely that. It might be a volunteer executive recruiter, a representative of a County agency offering help with utility bills, or a woman from our local university helping people to navigate skills requirements and on-line assessment tools. Whoever it may be, through their gifts of time and talent people’s lives are being healed. Some might even call it a ‘miracle’. Us? We just call it R U Support… Vinal Van Benthem
