elcome to the 84th season at the Civic! It is sure to be a great season
filled with many superb offerings that you are not going to want to miss. We actuallybegan the process of planning for this season in April 2011 when the play reading committeestarted reading plays andmusicals in preparation for our season. Now some 18 months later, we are inrehearsal for our first twoshows of the season, andplanning the auditions forthree others this month. Youhave heard the phrase “it takes a village…” and nothing could be truer about producing theatre. Directors, designers and techniciansspend anywhere from 12 to16 weeks in productionmeetings planning and collaborating and this is even before auditionstake place. And once we have auditioned andcast the production, we have anywhere from 4 to 7 weeks of rehearsal for the actors whilerecruiting backstage crew members for theirroles in the production.
All in all between 45 and 135 individualscontribute in some way prior to opening nightpreparing for each production. Additionallybetween 48 and 120 individuals are needed tosee the production through performances tostrike night. What makes this entire experienceunique from other theatrical experiences is theopportunity for professionals and amateurs towork side by side to create what we eventuallysee on stage. And this cooperative experiencehappens all throughout the process. The talentyou see on stage and the talent you don’t seebackstage during performances are yourfriends, neighbors, maybe even your financialplanner or physical therapist. Volunteers haveworked in the costume shop helping to construct costumes; they have helped to
gather props, and even had a hand in paintingthe scenery. They have answered phones in theoffice, sold tickets in the box office and checkedin participants for auditions. Their efforts aresupported by an average of 40 orchestra members and guided by the talent of 32 staff
members and approximately120 guest artists and instructors. These professionals not onlylend their skills to the producingof outstanding theatre, but aredeeply passionate about teachingthe skills they have acquired toothers. We have an abundanceof talent in our community both professional and amateur, and while often times the lines are blurred; we rely on this collaboration to bring an exceptionally unique experienceto our community.
If you have ever wonderedabout the opportunities available to you here at the Civic, I would encourage you to contact us at 269-343-2280 or by [email protected] or visit our website at www.KazooCivic.com to check outhow you can get involved at the Civic. We have wonderful Inside the Civic workshops thatconsist of audition and behind the scenes seminars designed to help you make the mostof your Civic experience. These workshops are agreat, no pressure way of getting a feel for whatyou might enjoy doing. Whether you have an unfulfilled curiosity or treading the boards is oldhat to you, you are always welcome at the Civic.
I hope you are planning to attend our season opener, Legally Blonde, the Musical andthe Parish Theatre opener, a brand new veryfresh adaptation of Moliere’s The ImaginaryInvalid. Both offerings are sure to delight. See you at the theatre.

2012-2013 Parish Theatre season presenter:
t’s often said that laughter is the best medicine, and nowhere
is that prescription more accurate thanin this rib-tickling, all new adaptation ofthe classic hypochondriac. The wealthyArgan is housebound with every diseasein the book. Lurking around are anynumber of quacks that are only toohappy to (mis)treat him. Family troubles, including a money-grubbing wife andtwo headstrong daughters, only add toArgan’s miseries. Complete with originalsongs, satirical bite and the requisitebawdiness, this telling of the classiccomedy gets an injection of 1960’sFrench pop culture. If you’re looking fora good laugh, this show is just what thedoctor ordered!
