First of all some tips

Decide what lesson your fairytale is going to teach. They are generally teaching something and yours should do

the same.

Create a good character. A fairytale needs someone to root for. Remember, your readers should like them and

want them to succeed.

Devise an evil character. A fairytale must have an evil character that works as an antagonist to the good character. The

evil character usually has special powers of some sort and they must use those powers in a way to cause the good character

 pain.

Design a magical character. The magical character can be the evil character but many fairy tales have both good andevil magical characters that work to off-set the other's influence.

Identify what obstacles your good character is going to have to face. They should require a bit of creativity by

your good character and a little magical assistance. Design some magical objects and don’t forget about fairies!

Write a happy ending. A fairytale isn't a fairytale unless it has a happy ending. Your good character must succeed and

your evil character must lose and lose in a big way so you can write your "happily ever after."

Fairies: The Airy Fairy, The Good Fairy, The bad fairy, The Flower Fairy, The Water

Fairy.

Family: Dreadful Dads, Missing Mums, Spiteful Sisters, Naughty Brothers, Kind-Hearted

Grannies, Cruel Stepmothers.

Royal family: Princes, Princesses, Kings, Queens.

Best friends: Cats, Three Pigs, Dogs, Frogs, Unicorns, Seven Dwarfs, Friendly Giants.

Evil characters: Gruesome Giants, Dragons, Wicked Witches, Wolves

Some furniture: Snow White Bed, Seven Dwarfs Bed, Sleeping Beauty Bed, Chairs For

Bears

Magic objects: Wands, Wings, Puss’s Boots, Fairy Frocks, Magic Shoes, Magic Bags, Invisible Extras, Rose -

Tinted Spectacles, Magic Mirrors, Spinning Wheels, Magic Clocks, Cauldrons, Magic Lamps, Magic Carpets,Broomsticks.

A fairytale is a fictional short story that features

folkloric fantasy characters like kings, queens,

princesses, princes, farmers, fairies, goblins, elves,

witches, giants and talking animals. Time and place is

less important; it takes place somewhere far away and

can’t be dated.

Often the king is looking for a husband to his young

and lovely daughter. A poor and wise young man tries

to win the princess. In order to win her he has to pass

a test.

What to include when you write a fairytale

1. A fairytale opens with the words “Once upon a time……”

2. Then you write where it takes place. Remember not to betoo specific about the place. It should be set everywhere (…in

a land far, far away.)

3. Then introduce the main characters (like the king,

princess, and the poor fellar…)

4. The middle of the fairytale has a conflict. You must

describe the conflict. There is always some kind of test here

that someone must take.

5. Remember there might be some helpers in the fairytale.

6. The structure: home – out – home is important

6. The end…….”…and they lived happily ever after.”

Important Elements

  Creatures with supernatural powers

  Magic things

  Magic words

  Magic numbers

Good and evil characters / contrasts

  Royalty

  Poverty

  Certain “patterns” in the tale

  Enchantment

Universal truths like coming of age and hopes for a better

life

Trials –and the passing of them

  Chronological composition

Now write your own fairy tale. Remember

to include all the elements of the genre.

Give it a title.
