There’s no such Thing as Failure It’sanewyear.AnewbookofourTorahhasbegun.OverthecourseoftheholidaysIspokeaboutbuildingthelife,communityandworldwewanttoseeandwhathappenswhenyourcheeseismoved.There’snothingeasyabouttransitions.Infact,veryoftenwemightratheravoidthem.Wemaybeafraidthatwewillbeafailure.Thatsomehowwewon’tliveuptoourownexpectations. WhenIwasservingontheboardoftheBrainTumorSociety,Ilearnedsomethingimportantaboutsuccessesandfailures.Ilearnedinthemedicalresearchworldthere’snosuchthingasfailure.Everytimeatestdoesn’tgothewayyouwouldexpectitoratreatmentdoesn’treactthewayyoumighthope,youlearnthatyou’reonestepclosertofindingwhatyou’relookingforbecauseyou’vebeenabletoruleoutyetanotherpossibility. Whatifwewereabletoadoptthisperspectiveonlife.Thereisnosuchthingasfailure,onlyanothersteptowarddiscoveringwhatwe’relookingfor.What if, for justamoment,wecouldacknowledge thatwe’renot inchargeandgivea littlebitof credit toGodhavingaplan?Perhaps thenwewouldbeabletoembracethepossibilitythatwearenotfailingwhenthingsdon’tgoasplannedandthatwenotneedbeafraidoffailureinthefuture.Life is justabout takingonestepafteranother;passing throughanewdoorway,findingournewcheese. TheprimaryreasonIbegansearchingforanewcommunitytoservewas because the Jewish Day School where I had recently taken on themantleofleadershipwasclosing.Despitetheprecariousfinancialsituationtheschoolhadbeeninformanyyearspriortomyleadership,Icouldhaveseenthisasatremendousprofessionalfailure.IcouldhavegivenintomyfearsaboutmymistakesandshortcomingsandgivenuponworkingintheJewish world. Instead, I chose to seize this sad chapter in my life as anopportunity.PerhapstherewasareasonthatIbecametheHeadofSchoolsosoonbeforetheschoolclosed.MaybeIneededapushtogetoutofmycageandexplorethemaze. BothTempleBethDavidandIhavesteppedthroughanewdoorwayin thesepast fewmonths.Neitherweresurewhatwason theother side.Leavingmyhomeofmorethantwodecadesandmycommunityoffriendswasnoteasy.IfearedthatIwouldfailtoliveuptoanewcommunity’ssetofexpectations. Losing a beloved rabbi for almost a decade and getting to know anewspiritualleaderwithnewideasandnewtraditionsmusthavebeenverychallenging.Theunknownalwaysseemsfarmoredangerousandprecariousthanthestatusquo.ButifGoddoeshaveaplanandwearewillingtoopenourselvestothejourneymaybe,justmaybe-wewillbethebeneficiariesofabountyofblessing. IcanonlyspeakformyselfwhenIsaythatIamthrilledwithwhatI have discovered. We are a community that is growing, searching andexploring.Weareaskingallofthetherightquestions;thedifficultquestionsandwe’repassingthroughdoorwaysasacommunityandasafamily. There will undoubtedly be challenging decisions to make as wejourneytogetherbutthesepainsarenotfailures.Thesechallengesarenotasignofafalteringtempleorafailingcommunity-theyaresignsofvitalityandhonestsearching.AswebeginanewJewishyearandanewbookoftheTorahletuswriteanewchapterinourTorah.Letus“singanewsong”as the Psalmist says. Let us face our challenges together; celebrate ourjoyoustimes,mourn,pray,singandlearntogether.TempleBethDavidhasdone amazing things as we’ve heralded in this new chapter in our lives.Let’scelebrateallthatwe’veaccomplishedandlookforwardtoourfuturesuccesses.Ourfutureawaitsus.

The Ritual of Prayer

The sacred cat Once upon a time there was a guru in the mountains of Asia who gathered around him a band of monks dedicated to prayer. The guru owned a cat, which he loved deeply. He took the cat with him everywhere, even to morning prayer. When the disciples complained that the cat’s prowling distracted them, the guru bought a leash and tied the cat to a post at the entrance to the prayer room. Years later, when the guru died, his disciples continued to care for the cat. But, as they say, cats have nine lives, so the cat outlived even the disciples. By then the disciples had their own disciples, who began caring for the cat, but without recalling anymore why the cat was present during prayer. When the cat’s leash wore out, they knitted another one in the sacred colors of the sky and the earth; and when the post wore down, they built a beautiful new one that they began calling the sacred cat stand. During this third generation of disciples, the cat died, and the disciples wasted no time in buying another sacred cat to accompany them in prayer. Their worship was eventually expanded to include the sacred actions of tying the cat to the leash and affixing the leash to the sacred cat stand. Our days are filled with rituals.As we carve up time andcompartmentalize it around events that involve us, we createmomentsofmeaning.Someritualshavebeencomposedfarbeforeourtime,andothersaredevelopedforaparticularpurpose. Religiousritualishowwestructuresadandhappymomentsso that they occur within a framework that we understand andappreciate.Asahuman, it feelsmuchsaferandmoresatisfyingtoexistwithinacontrolledstructure.Whenthereisabeginning,middle,andanend,orevenjustrecognitionofflowthatbuildstoaheightenedmoment,webegintocloseoutotheractivitiesfromourmindsandfocusonwhatreallymatters.Ifwearesuccessful,ahighpointwillbereached,experienced,andfelt. Asatisfyingritualprovidesapleasingsensation,butweallknow that individual emotions are experienced differently. Inprayer, for instance, we can experience and engage privately orpublicly. As a Cantor, it is sometimes challenging to decipherthe levelofengagementorsuccess thatmydaveninghason thecongregation.Havecongregantsreachedalevelofsatisfactioniftheyaresingingexuberantlywithjoy?Whataboutthecongregantswhosit silently,pensively, just listening? I leaveyouwith thesethreequestions:

Whatisyourstyleofworship?

Whatisnecessaryinyourprayerexperiencetomakeitasuccessfulritual?

Howcanyouincorporatemoremeaningintoyourprayers?

November and December will be just as busy as the preschool prepares for itsannualThanksgivingshowandtheHanukkahcelebrations.

Perhaps,bylightingthecandles,wearerelivingthestruggleforJewishfreedomthattheJewsofJudealivedthroughbackinthe2ndcenturyBCE.Weareroleplaying–pretendingthatwetooaretheMaccabees.Thisideaof“actingasif”isnotsuchanunusualphenomenoninJewishlife.Thepesachsederisalsoallaboutrelivingthepastbyretellingthestorytoday.Actually,whenyouthinkaboutit,wesortofaredoingthesamethinginNovemberwhenweeatturkeyattheThanksgivingfeast(eventhoughhistorianstellusthatthepilgrimsprobablydidn’teatthisdishatthat“firstThanksgiving”).WearerelivingthejoyofthoseAmericanpioneers. Raquela Prywes lived on the front lines of Israelʼs history. A ninth-generation Jerusalemite, she fould her true calling as a hospital and battlefield nurse, delivering babies in the infamous Athlit de-tention camp, where Holocaust survivors were interned by the British, and literally walking across minefields to tend the wounded during the 1948 War of Independence.

Nancy Sharp is an author, blogger and keynote speaker who fre-quently talks to large groups about bold living. When life hands you the unthinkable, you must find new ways to see. Such is the ground on which Nancy rebuilt her world after losing her husband to brain cancer when their twins were mere toddlers.

Our pies are UNBAKED and FROZEN so that when you receive them they can be defrosted and freshly baked for your holiday table according to the instructions enclosed with each pie.
