From the Editor

Hello, and welcome to the third edition of TEAM PENNING ROUND-UP, covering events held during January, February and March, 2011. The first few months of this year have proved quite challenging for horse owners across Australia, with floods and storms causing havoc along the eastern seaboard on a disastrous scale. Our thoughts have certainly been with those people who have been affected by these disasters and we hope that things are by now getting back to normal. Not only did the weather cause devastating losses in many areas, there were also widespread cancellations of events in many parts of Australia, due to roads being cut, or grounds being damaged, or people being unable to even leave home. At least now it is good to see that clubs and event organizers have been able to continue with the staging of their events however, and competitors are finding plenty of places where they can get out and enjoy their favourite pastime — Team Penning! Thank you again for the tremendous response we have received for this new publication. The comments and feedback we have received are very encouraging, and while this edition may again be running a little late, we are looking forward to continuing to bring the Team Penning community news, results and information about this exciting sport. In this issue you will find details for the 2011 Australian Team Penning National Championships, Team Penning results from events staged in recent months around Australia, news about the sport of Team Penning continuing to spread its wings and lots more. And don’t forget that we would love to hear from all Team Penning enthusiasts out there with news, results and photographs of what is happening in your area. We are excited about the future of Team Penning in Australia and look forward to seeing this sport grow!

Best wishes, Peter Simpson

Championship events, which will once again staged at the fabulous AELEC facility at Tamworth, NSW from September 22nd to 25th. Hawkesbury River Saddlery Co. have also announced that they will be back for 2011 as major sponsors to this annual event, with Heath Harris saying he was very pleased with the success of the first championships and will be working closely with Team Penning Australia through out the coming year to ensure that 2011 will be even bigger then the 2010 event. The four days of activity will kick off on Thursday 22nd of September with the staging of the DC Freeze Branding Services Arena Sorting event. Team Penning Australia are pleased to welcome DC Freeze Branding Services on board as a sponsor this year. Friday and Saturday will then feature the first two rounds of the Hawkesbury River Saddle Company 2011 Australian Team Penning National Championships. Competitors in the Championship event will be competing for more than $10,000 in trophies and

prizemoney, including three magnificent trophy saddles from the major sponsors, Hawkesbury River Saddle Company. Prizemomeny will be paid on the rounds as well as Sundays final, which will feature the top 30 teams from each of the earlier rounds. With details only just announced, interest in this years event is already exceeding expectations and organisers are expecting large numbers of entries along with excellent crowds numbers.

Competitors are expected to come from a wide area of Australia, including the far flung areas of Western Australia and the Northern territory, which is a reflection of both the popularity of the sport and the amount of work that Team Penning Australia have put in over the past year in promoting the sport. 1. A judge will advise the assigned collar colour as the first competitor crosses the starting line.

2. Time for a run commences when the first of the three horses crosses the starting line.

3. Within a two minute time limit, a team will attempt to cut from the mob and pen three head of cattle with the same assigned collar colour.

A 30 second warning bell will be given prior to the end of the run.

4. A team can only call for time once. 5. To call for time one rider must stand in the gateway of

the pen, with only a minim of the horse’s nose to maximum of the shoulder in the pen gate and raise his/her hand after some, or all, of the assigned cattle are penned. The remaining 2 riders must be on the pen side of the starting line.

6. A team may call for time with only one or two of the assigned cattle penned, however, teams penning three head of cattle will place higher than those penning two head, and two head will place higher then one head, regardless of time.

7. Time cannot be given until the assigned cattle are in the pen and all other cattle are behind the mob end of the starting line.

If time is called before all spare cattle are back across the mob end of the starting line the team will incur a no time (disqualification).

8. No time will be given if incorrect assigned cattle are in the pen when time is called.

9. Any more than 5 head of cattle across the pen end of the starting line at any time incurs a no time (disqualification).

10. A team exhibiting any unnecessary rough handling or rushing at or into the mob at excessive speed, may be disqualified at the judge’s decision.

11. Once the run has commenced no rider can enter the pen to cut cattle out; all removal of cattle during the run from the pen is to be done on around the outside of the pen.

12. No whips can be carried into the arena. No hitting of the cattle with any object is allowed.

13. At the discretion of the judge a team may be awarded a re-run if one or more head of their assigned cattle is deemed unsuitable (health wise) or escapes the arena.

14. Competitors will only be called 3 times. If you are not at the “in gate marshal area” by the 3rd call, that run will be forfeited.

15. Riders must wear a hat, cap or riding helmet into the arena, riders 17 years and under must wear an approved riding helmet.

Polo shirts, long or short sleeves shirts with a collar must be worn. Suitable riding pants and riding footwear must be worn.

16. OHS / Public Liability Insurance Ruling - Stallions must be handled and ridden by a person over the age of 18 years.

DISPUTES 1. Initiating a Protest. When a team has a dispute about a run, a protest must

be lodged with a judge before the team leaves the arena. The team will then immediately file a p r o t e s t with the Judge / Director-In-Charge, putting up a $50.00 deposit for a decision. If sustained, the team will get its money back; if not, the money will go to the association.

2. Presenting the Dispute Findings. If a protest is filed, the Judge / Director-In-Charge shall

present said dispute, along with the $ 50.00 deposit, to the Judge / Director-In-Charge. The Judge / Directo r-In-Charge shall immediately present the findings and reasons to the protesting parties. Protest results should be decided and announced after the last team prior to that set of cattle exiting the arena.

he rapid growth of Team Penning in Australia in the past twelve months has seen a raising of the profile for the Team Penning Australia organisation. As a result of

this there have been many new clubs and groups start up, all keen to participate in this exciting sport. In the last issue we reported that there were new clubs at Pittwsworth, Widgee and Oakey in Queensland, as well as Mudgee in New South Wales, while interest has also been created in many other areas (including the Northern Territory) with a number of other clubs are also currently going through the process of becoming established, two of which are at Canowindra and Coolah in New South Wales. Team Penning Australia has been only to pleased to help these clubs through the formation process and the staging of their first events, with Bob Lee and his team making themselves available as instructors, judges or timekeepers to help the clubs get their events off the ground. One of the key reasons behind the establishment of Team Penning Australia was to promote and expand the sport Australia wide, while providing a standardisation of the rules amongst the many organisations holding Team Penning events. With the progress that has been made to date, with the number of new clubs forming and the enquiries that Team Penning Australia are receiving, it is easy to see that

this philosophy is working. Continued growth in the number of clubs affiliating with Team Penning Australia and staging Team Penning events can only benefit the sport. Following the first three months of 2011 Team Penning Australia now has five affiliates signed up, with another eight currently going through the process of forming and becoming affiliated. With these clubs being spread far and wide across Australia the competition we will see at this years Australian Championships looks set to be very interesting.

Canowindra held their first two day Team Penning event on the weekend of February 12th and 13th, assisted by Team Penning Australia, and which proved to be a great success, with riders travelling from Goulburn, Young, Forbes and from all around the district. Debby Stocks travelled to Canowindra to officiate at the event, where Arena Sorting was held on the Saturday, followed by Team Penning on the Sunday.

From Page 5… Coolah had their first run on March 12th and congratulations must go to the organisers, Bec Keaney and Erin Williams, along with all their hard working helpers, for a highly successful day, which saw 112 runs from a very keen bunch of riders.

Team Penning Australia President Bob Lee attended the day for judging and with the large band of team penning enthusiasts that appear to be around the Coolah area it looks like they can only go from strength to strength from there. he 2nd Annual Armidale Stockmans Challenge and Team Penning event is set to be staged in Armidale, NSW, on the weekend of

September 17th & 18th, indoors at the Armidale Exhibition Centre. The weekend will feature Two-Handed Cutting, Working Cowhorse and an Indoor Campdraft, along with Team Penning and several Jackpot events — including Barrel Racing and Reining. Staged jointly by three of the regular users of the new facility, the Northern Table lands Western Horse Club, the Armidale Campdraft Club and the Armidale Show Society, the Stockmans Challenge is set to be staged annually with the aim of raising funds toward the continued upgrade of the Armidale Exhibition Centre, which was only re-opened in 2010 after the previous facility had been destroyed in a hail storm in 2007. The new facility was constructed thanks to disaster relief funding being made available by the previous NSW State Government and is a vast improvement over that which it replaced, with a large 30m x 66m indoor arena area as well as undercover areas on both sides of the arena. Work on the facility is still an ongoing thing however, with future plans being for a canteen and office area to be constructed, along

with continued improvements to the facilities for handling cattle, which will make it easier for team penning, cutting and

indoor camp- draft events to be held, as well as regular clinics and schools. The format for the weekend will be for the Two-Handed Cutting and Working Cowhorse events to be staged on Saturday the 18th of September, with the Indoor Campdraft and team Penning events to be staged on Sunday the 18th. The addit iona l event s , including Jackpot Barrel Race, Jackpot Reining and Western Versatility, all of which are

designed to create added interest in the weekend, will then be staged between and after the individual Challenge events. On offer will be a minimum of $1,200 for the Stockmans Challenge event, to be paid on the aggregate placings, while additional prizes will be awarded to the winners of each of the Challenge legs. All other events shall be Jackpot events, with sponsorship also being sought to add to the prize pool for these events. A full program, along with entry forms, will be available shortly. For further information visit the event website: www.armidalestockmanschallenge.webs.com, or contact Peter Simpson on 02 6771 1625 bh or 02 6772 0820 ah.

by Kellie Porter aturday 5th March saw the commencement of the 2011 UHTP Association calendar year. It had been a few months since our last competition in November 2010, so

there was a lot of catching up to do amongst friends. 186 runs were held over the weekend with over twenty new members joining our club. Even though teams had, had three to four months off it didn’t stop some fast times being recorded across the divisions. Our open competition was won by Liz Vella, Allan Peterson and Kate Fox who brought it all together with the fastest run of the weekend. Their time of 28.84 seconds for three head gave them 1st place and top points to date. Paul Hugginson, Les Turner and Doug Porter placed 2nd. Liz Vella, Kate Fox and Allan Peterson also put together the 3rd fastest time of the day. The highest scoring Juvenile team from 2010 Brittnee Crackett, Emma Crackett and Lauryn Crackett placed 4th just ahead of Troy Mathews, Melissa Mathews and Libby Henderson in 5th.

Having a fractured arm didn’t hinder April Mostyn when she combined with team mates Tahnie Morrell and Kim Cheddar to take out 1st place in our juvenile section. They penned three head in 51.16 seconds. In 2nd place was Elise Coombes, Annaleise Kay and Jessica McLaren, Emma Ernst, Ashley Ernst and Hayley Clark came in 3rd whilst placing 4th was Hayley Fairfull, Rachael Gimbert and Victoria McLaren, a great achievement for these girls as it was their first competition in the older age group. Our up and coming team penner’s of the future showed they have what it takes to put together some outstanding times also. The newly formed Gardner Rural Fencing team of Zeb Pearce, Polly Gardner and Mathew Porter made a lot of the open competitors breathe a sigh of relief that they were not in the open competition stopping the clock in 51.16 seconds for three head to claim first place. This team put together another blistering time penning their three head in 52.47 seconds awarding them second place also. Kylie Fairfull, Matthew Tippet and Sarah Caslick were not far behind with two head penned for 1 minute 11.78 to take out third place. Abbey Frewin, James Wicks and Zoe Harrison combined to penned 1 head in 39.44 seconds with Cheraz Barker, Emily Thomas and Zoe Harrison notching up fifth place with one head penned in 1 minute 55.03.

UHTP Association would like to thank our cattle donors for the weekend, Craig and Stuart Murphy of Timor and Cressfield Stud of Wingen. Our sport would not be at all possible without your generosity. A very big thank you to Murrurundi Public School for running the canteen over the duration of the weekend. Our Wingen grounds were

prepared by Fiona and Trevor Cleland once again and we thank them tremendously for their hard work. Our very hard working cattle men kept things flowing in the back yards to ensure our day ran as smoothly as possible with cattle changes and keeping the cattle feed and watered through-out the competition. Thank you must also go to the flag men, gate people, time keepers and of course the judges your time is very much appreciated. UHTP would also like to thank David Frasca of Discount Veterinary Wholesale for your kind donation of prizes. This month’s Encouragement awards went to April Mostyn and Daniel Lyre, these were kindly donated by Frank Daley. Our preferred donation for this event was made to the Murrurundi Wild Dog Association. Many of our UHTP members are also preparing to compete at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show. Our very successful open point score winners from 2010 will again be looking at taking out top honours at this year’s show. Mal Gardner, Loreen and Doug Porter placed first in the Team Yarding Challenge at the 2010 show. Paul Hugginson, Les Turner and Paul Fairfull will be our second team representing our club. They were the 2010 open point score runners up. All UHTP members, family and friends wish both these teams the best of luck at this year’s show and we know will do us all very proud. Some of our members who are also competing at this year’s show will be representing other team penning clubs. Best of luck to Laura Gardner, Darryl Cooper and Richard Charlton, Paul Flett, Alex Williams and Murray Williams – Team Penning Australia. Christine Brooker, Ben Hartup and Peter Riordan - Hunter Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society. This team will be sponsored by Wranger and Maincamp Stock Horse and Angus Stud. Best of luck to all team penners at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show. Many of our members choose to travel to other team penning events through-out the year. The first such event was held on Saturday 12 March by the recently formed...

he 'Old West' has long been considered one of the more fascinating periods in history, not only by those in whose country the events

took place, but by people from all around the world. Heroic tales of cowboys and indians were spread far and wide, at first through newspap ers and books but then through the black and white news reels and 'talkies' that appeared in the nineteen thirties and fourties, showing the old west as it really was and spawning legends that live on to this day. Australians were not immune to admiring the daring cowboys and their exploits, with many becoming fans of the cowboy and indian characters that graced the screens in theatres across the country. For some Australians however it wasn't the cowboys and indians that proved inspiring though, but rather it was the stout horses they rode which caught the eye. These were horses that were built to work, could handle the toughest cattle and were fast and good looking to boot. This was our first look at the Quarter Horse.

In the years that would follow some Australian horsemen even ventured forth to see these horses first hand and upon their return to our country had visions of trying to breed something similar, all with varying degrees of success. One such experiment reportedly took place at Goonoo Goonoo Station near Tamworth, NSW, where upon seeing the Quarter Horse in action the manager set about trying to breed an Australian Quarter Horse, using horses of Thoroughbred and Percheron breeding. This experiment apparently produced some excellent horses at the time,

evidence of which was their stock taking out the awards for the Champion Hack, the High Jump and the Open Campdraft all in one year at the Tamworth Show. Regardless of the quality of these horses however, they were not Quarter Horses, so it was therefore inevitible that sooner or later the Quarter Horse would make its way to our shores. It was perhaps fortuitous then that the first shipment of Quarter Horses to arrive in Australia would come from the famed King Ranch, from Texas, considered to be one of the premier producers of the breed. This ensured that the first Quarter Horses introduced to Australia would be worthy examples of the breed and would have a lasting impact, which is exactly what occurred. Even today that impact is still being felt, long after King Ranch Australia has dispersed. A stroll through the Stud Books of the four most popular working breeds in Australia today - the Australian Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Paint Horse Association of Australia (PHAA), the Australian Appaloosa Association (AAA) and the Australian Stock Horse Society (ASHS) - shows just what sort of a foundation was laid by those first representatives of the Quarter Horse Breed and the generations that followed. The debt that the Australian working horse industry owes King Ranch Australia is one that can never be repaid, for this was the very beginning of this industry in Australia.

* * * * * That first shipment of four Quarter Horse stallions arrived in Australia in late June, 1954, having been brought here as a result of the establishment of King Ranch Australia by Robert J Kleberg of the King Ranch, in partnership with Sir Rupert Clarke, Peter Baillieu and Sam Hordern. The names of these four stallions were Vaquero, Mescal, Jackaroo KR and Gold Standard, and each would play his part in helping to establish the Quarter Horse breed. A quick look at the Stud Book of the Australian Quarter Horse Association shows that of these stallions Vaquero (imp) Q1 has 208 foals… Continued on Page 17

ontinuing our series of profiles dedicated to the working horse bloodlines that have made the cow horse industry what it is today, in this issue we take a look at the

influence that the famed King Ranch had in building the working horse industry we have in Australia today. In the Working Lines section our aim is to bring you feature articles on leading Quarter Horse, Australian Stock Horse and other breed bloodlines that have had an impact on the working horse industry.

fter all the rain at the start of the year horse owners should be aware of a number of possible health issues their stock may face. With warm weather and an

abundance of moisture in the early months of the year the likelihood of numerous breeding insects and lush grass may see a number of health issues occurring. Watch out for laminitis, which may see you needing to and shut your horses in yards or stables for a good period of the day. A potentially more serious issue however is the possibility of an insect borne virus, such as Ross River fever or Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA or Swamp Fever) - a serious notifiable disease that is endemic to certain parts of Qld and northern New South Wales. While EIA very rarely moves out of these regions, it is spread by insects that thrive in flood areas and has occasionally also occurred in other areas. Already this year there have been reports of Ross River fever occurring following the widespread floods that many areas have faced, as well as cases of Neurological disease within the horse community. Following are excerpts of press releases and publications released to the public from relevant Veterinary and horse health authorities. It is recommended that in the event of any of your horses showing and signs of any type of infection you should contact your veterinarian immediately. EQUINE INFECTIOUS ANEMIA Equine infectious anaemia (EIA or Swamp Fever) is a debilitating viral disease of horses. It is caused by a virus of the Lentivirinae subfamily (Retroviridae family) which is closed to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). EIA is present in many countries, but is often confined to specific regions and has a variable prevalence and severity. In Australia, the only area where EIA can be regarded as endemic is along the inland river systems of central and western Queensland. Whilst the disease may manifest initially in an acute form with the possibility of some early deaths, EIA is generally a chronic disease characterised by: ● Progressive loss of condition ● Muscle weakness and poor stamina ● Rough coat ● Depression ● Anemia. There may be intermittent acute episodes in which affected animals show: ● Fever ● Severe depression ● Anorexia ● Loss of coordination especially in the hindquarters ● Haemorrhages of the mucous membranes ● Eye and nasal discharges ● Jaundice ● Diarrhoea ● Oedema of the head, trunk and limbs. Death may occur during an acute episode. Sub-clinical and mild infections are common. The acute form of this disease usually occurs within seven to 30 days after exposure

to the virus. EIA virus is transmitted by flies and some mosquitoes. Other methods of transmission include the use of virus-contaminated instruments such as needles, syringes, and dental and tattooing equipment. In EIA infected pregnant mares, approximately ten percent of their foals are born infected with the virus, apparently due to placental transmission. Transmission of the virus may also occur through natural breeding of mares and stallions, but is not a primary method. At this time there is no effective treatment for EIA. Infected horses are lifelong carriers of this virus. No specific treatment is available. Supportive treatment, including blood transfusions can be considered. However, because recovered horses become carriers, if the disease occurs in a previously free area it is generally better to destroy affected horses. In endemic areas, risk of infection can be reduced by protecting horses from insect vectors where practicable. For example: ● Keeping horses away from low lying areas ● Removing breeding sources for insects ● Use of insecticides Insect-proof stabling From Qld Horse Council EIA fact sheet. NEUROLOGICAL DISEASE IN HORSES - UPDATE An increased number of horses showing muscle and joint soreness and neurological signs were reported in southern states from February 2011. Reported cases peaked around mid March and numbers have been steadily declining since. Many cases have been diagnosed as being due to an arbovirus infection. Arboviruses are a large group of viruses spread mainly by blood sucking insects and include alphaviruses and flaviviruses. The arbovirus infections have been attributed to the alphavirus, Ross River virus (RRv) in many musculoskeletal cases and to flavivirus infection with Murray Valley Encephalitis virus (MVEv) and Kunjin virus in the majority of neurological cases. There are indications that cooler weather in south eastern Australia has led to a reduction in mosquito numbers and a consequent reduction in the number of new cases being reported in horses from early April. National situation Table 1: Cases with horses with suspect arboviral disease showing neurological or musculoskeletal disease with samples taken for lab testing. (*NSW have only been investigating cases showing neurological signs). Continued Page 14...

Continued from Page 11 Laboratory findings Interpretation of laboratory results for flaviviruses is difficult and time consuming, often requiring a range of tests. Many horses can become infected with arboviruses but only a small proportion will become ill. This means that a positive blood test must be carefully interpreted. Repeat testing is crucial to show that antibody levels are rising and allow a definitive diagnosis.

South Australia Laboratory results so far have indicated that the majority of positive flavivirus serology is due to Kunjin virus with a few cases of Murray Valley Encephalitis virus (MVEv). Recent exposure to Ross River virus (RRv) has also been demonstrated in some horses.

New South Wales Laboratory results suggest the majority of positive flavivirus serology is due to Kunjin virus. Note: NSW have only been investigating cases showing neurological signs.

Victoria Laboratory results have revealed a mixture of RRv, MVEv and Kunjin virus in circulation.

Queensland situation Biosecurity Queensland has been investigating a smaller number of cases submitted by private practitioners. Retrospective testing of eligible samples has also occurred. Biosecurity Queensland is running 7 different initial laboratory tests for arboviruses (including alpha, orbi and flaviviruses) as part of the investigation protocol. If positive results are returned on the initial round of tests then further testing is conducted.

All horses in Queensland reported as showing neurological signs have Hendra virus ruled out as the first step in the investigation protocol. Preliminary laboratory results are consistent with past flavivirus exposure in many cases. As at late May 2011, initial results indicated that 21 of 33 samples had evidence of past exposure to a flavivirus. Evidence of recent flavivirus exposure is indicated in eight cases. The majority of the recent infections are due to Kunjin virus; however, some may involve both Kunjin and MVEv.

On-going investigation in Queensland Biosecurity Queensland will continue to investigate any cases of nervous system disease in horses. As Hendra virus is one of the differential diagnoses for horses showing neurological clinical signs, appropriate personal protective equipment should be utilised when dealing with these cases. More information can be found in

Guidelines for veterinarians handling potential Hendra virus infections in horses are available at the following web address: http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/4790_13371.htm The Guidelines have been recently updated to include the last known Hendra virus incident in Tewantin, plus new epidemiological information.

Personal protection The horse is usually a ‘dead-end’ host for mosquito borne arbovirus infections and is not considered a likely source of new infection for people or other horses. Prevent mosquito bites by: ● covering up with light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear; and ● regularly applying effective repellent on exposed skin.

Horse owners should be urged to reduce the exposure of their animals to insect bites, by using registered repellents, rugging and the use of fly masks especially in the mornings and early evenings when vectors are most prevalent.

ountry music fans had a lot to be excited about during the first months of 2011, not only thanks to the array of local and International talent on offer at the Tamworth

Country Music Festival, but also thanks to the long awaited tour by American superstar Alan Jackson becoming a reality! In out last issue we reported that rumours were running wild about the influx of international stars that would possibly be visiting Australia this year, and while not all the whispers have proved correct, there was (and still is) plenty in store for Australian country music fans. The word of a possible Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton tour wasn’t far from the mark… both will be appearing in Australia throu gh out 2011 — unfortunately just not together! Kenny Rogers proved one of the headline acts for the 2011 Tamworth Country Music Festival, performing at the festival and proving that he’s still got it, while Dolly Parton will be bringing her ‘Better Day’ World Tour to our shores during November, which promises to be one hell of a show! Of the other acts that we had on our list of 2011 tours, we were to be disappointed that Toby Keith, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill won’t be coming (though Tim and Faith WILL be here in 2012! More news on that as details become known!). One genuine superstar who did manage to make it out here however was the legendary Alan Jackson — bringing his ‘Freight Train’ tour down-under and performing to sell-out crowds right across Australia, while our very own Keith Urban will be hot on his heels with a tour scheduled for April. Australian fans turned out in force for Alan Jackson and he did not disappoint, performing hits from throughout his long career, as well as songs from his new album. For most fans the show was exactly what was expected from AJ. The show may not have been as big an event as was perhaps the Tim McGraw concert, however he still proved to be the consummate entertainer, giving the audience a tremendous nights entertainment. Perhaps one of the highlights of the tour however was the emergence of an Australian act that promises big things to

come, in talented duo McAlister Kemp! Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp are born & bred Australian Country boys… described by many as being Australia’s answer to Brooks & Dunn! Stepping in to replace Miranda Lambert at the last minute, this talented duo can now add supporting Alan Jackson as just another achievement on what is already an impressive list of achievements. With two #1 Country hits in Australia, their debut album reaching #1 on the iTunes Country Chart (Australia) and #8 on the ARIA Country Sales Chart, being voted by Australian Country Music fans as the 2011 CMC Music Award winners for 'Best New Oz Artist', and winning the 'Best New Talent' award at the 2011 Country Music Awards of Australia (Golden Guitars) this is just the beginning of what is sure to

be a long and very impressive career! Also not to be outdone was the very talented Jasmine Rae, the second support act on the Alan Jackson tour, who wowed audiences with her amazing voice. Keith Urban is also set to make it back to our shores in April, kicking off his tour in Tamworth — where it

all began for him in 1995 when he took out the prestigious Star Maker Talent Search! Keith, who has said for many years that he has wanted to get back to Tamworth to perform, is also reportedly trying to plan to be in the city for the January 2012 event. And speaking of all things Urban, the Urban Country festival will also be held on April 30th at Caboolture, featuring a host of local stars (The McClymonts, James Reyne and Jonah's Road to name a few) as well as chart-topping US star Joe Nichols, so it promises to be another fantastic event for Australian Country Music fans. Be sure to watch this space for more news on what is happening on the Country Music scene!

Continued from Page 9… The King Ranch Influence! registered or recorded, Mescal (imp) Q35 has 250 foals and Jackaroo KR (imp) Q34 has 174 foals. The remaining stallion, Gold Standard (imp), passed away prior to the formation of the AQHA and was never actully registered, however there were subsequently 25 foals recorded with the AQHA as being sired by him. It was from these 657 registered foals (and lets also not forget those that were never registered or were perhaps registered elsewhere, for example as Australian Stock Horses) that the influence of the Quarter Horse breed began. The majority of these resulting foals were either first cross (half Quarter Horse) or second cross (three quarters Quarter Horse), with only relatively small numbers of purebred foals being born due to the lack of purebred or second cross mares being available in those early years. It wasn't until the breed had become better established that the numbers of purebred horses available started to increase, through additional imports of both mares and stallions. King Ranch Australia continued to lead the way by importing these animals, however many other breeders keen to jump on the Quarter Horse bangwagon - which was rapidly gaining pace - also helped to add to the numbers of pure bred breeding stock available, through both the the continued breeding of first and second cross mares back to purebred stallions to eventually produce more foals that would be considered purebred as well as the importation of numerous other bloodlines. Not surprisingly the Quarter Horse was soon in great demand from all areas of the horse industry. From the show arena to outback stations the Quarter Horse became greatly sought after, wanted for their temperaments, conformation, speed, toughness and cattle working ability. While the limited numbers of purebred horses that were available were priced out of reach of many horse owners, they soon found that the cross-bred Quarter Horse was well suited to not only their pockets, but also to whatever discipline was required, especially those where cattle working ability and speed were required.

Many stations and properties soon found themselves introducing first and second cross stallions sired by these first King Ranch sires to their breeding programs, crossing them over traditional Stock Horse and Thoroughbred mares, with the result ing ' in fused' Quarter Horse progeny quickly gaining a reputation of excellence. It was commonplace to see the progeny of sons of Mescal (imp) Q35, Jackeroo KR (imp) Q34 and Vaquero (imp ) Q1 compet ing successfully in all the traditional Australian events, from Campdraft ing to Showjumping, Pony Club, Hacking, Dressage and Polocrosse, while at the same time the western horse industry in this country was a l s o be c o m in g we l l established and events such as Cutting and all other western performance events were becoming popular. As one of the traits for which the Quarter Horse was renown was speed, it also wasn't long before that would be tested in Australia, with the staging of the first organised Quarter Horse sprint race at Trangie Rodeo in 1970. Some breeders may have begun importing sprint-bred Quarter Horse stallions during the 1960's, with names such as Eddie Barnes (imp) Q33 and Alfies Cat (imp) Q99 becoming quite well known, however it would be two sons of King Ranch's Mescal (imp) Q35, who would have the honour of placing both first and second in that first official sprint race, with Quarter Staff beating out Quarter Elgrando in the race to the finish line for the unique $1000 event.

* * * * * In Part Two we will look at the development of the King Ranch breeding program and the lasting influence of Old Sorrel on the breed.
