From the Editor Hello, and welcome to the first edition of TEAM PENNING ROUND-UP, a new equine magazine that has been introduced specifically for the Australian Team Penning community to provide them with up to date information on what is happening within their chosen sport. This publication is being produced in association with TEAM PENNING AUSTRALIA, an organization that has been formed to foster and promote the sport through assisting new clubs with staging events, providing them with affiliation and insurance services, as well as standardising the rules. Through this publication TEAM PENNING AUSTRALIA will be able to communicate with all team penning enthusiasts to better keep them informed. Like all things new we are starting out small, however we look forward to growing right along with the exciting sports of Team Penning and Arena Sorting. To help us along the way we would love to hear from all Team Penning enthusiasts out there and would especially love to know about all your events, including the details of ones that are being planned as well as receiving results and photographs from those events that have been held. We are excited about the future of Team Penning in Australia and would like to take this opportunity to wish all participants at the 2010 Australian Team Penning National Championships the best of luck at this event. We look forward to seeing you there! Best wishes, Peter Simpson

eam Penning is an event that has certainly been gaining in popularity in Australia in recent years, however some newcomers to the sport have often found

themselves confused by what was required. This was due mainly to the fact that the many different clubs and organisations running Team Penning events throughout Australia were operating under different sets of rules. Due to the slight differences to the rules offered by the Australian Quarter Horse Association, the Horse Show Association of Australia and other performance bodies it was felt that there should be a national body for the sport, providing uniform rules throughout Australia, as well as offering other advantages to clubs and organisations promoting Team Penning events. With this in mind a group of interested people got together in Tamworth in 2007 and held a meeting to discuss the formation of a body that would provide Team Penning enthusiasts with such an organisation. With the assistance and guidance of the United States Team Penning Association, along with well known Australian- born Team Penner Phil Mainey, who was the 2007-2008 US Team Penning Champion, the decision was made to go ahead and as a result a new association was formed, becoming known as Team Penning Australia. Under the guidance of the President elected at that first meeting, Bob Lee, TPA set about establishing that the main focus of the association would be to establish uniform rules and encourage other clubs to affiliate with TPA. With the sport being so popular through out the New England and North West regions of NSW, not to mention the remainder of Australia, the need was there to make it all happen.

TPA Inc held its first official day on 14th Feb 2009 at the Don Willis Indoor Arena, holding the first Team Penning Clinic in Australia by Phil Mainey. This day proved very successful with plans being to bring Phil back to Australia at two yearly intervals for clinics. Following on from that day TPA began holding Team Penning days on the third Sunday of each month at the Don Willis Indoor Arena on Tamworth Showground, with great success.

In September 2009 the association held what would be the first of many charity events to come, with an event held at the Australian Equestrian and Livestock Exhibition Centre (AELEC) at Tamworth. Following the success of this event a donation of $4000 was made by TPA to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service based in Tamworth. This year has proved to be a very busy year for TPA, with great participation from riders from all over NSW. In keeping with the original aims of the association 2010 has also seen the first of what will hopefully be many clubs becoming affiliated with TPA. It has also seen the association President, Bob Lee, and partner April assisting with the running of Team Penning events in southern Queensland, which is surely an indication that the reasons behind the formation of Team Penning Australia were sound and that TPA is set to become a valued part of the Australian equine scene. Following on from the success of the first charity Team Penning this has been followed by another charity event held at AELEC in May 2010, from which a further $2951 has been donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. 2010 has also seen the introduction of a new event, in Arena Sorting, with TPA being the first to hold this event in Australia. In the United States Arena Sorting has become a very popular horse sport also, and in some parts of the US has become an even more popular sport to attend than Team Penning. Other events in 2010 include TPA members participating at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, with two teams representing the association. Of these one team placed 3rd with the other not placing, but it was a great honour for TPA to have such a high level of riders gunning for the best. This year will also see the staging of the first ever Australian Team Penning National Championships. This event is to be held over four days from Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th September 2010 at AELEC in Tamworth NSW. Entries have been received from riders from a wide area of Australia, who are set to compete for more than $7000 in prizemoney and trophies, thanks in no small part to the generous support of well known Australian horseman Heath Harris and his Hawkesbury River Saddle Company, who are supplying three fender saddles, valued at $7000, for the Championship winning team. The future of Team Penning and Arena Sorting in Australia is certainly looking bright following the formation of Team Penning Australia, with the benefits of a National body for the sport set to see it go from strength to strength. Anyone interested in Team Penning Australia and the events or services offered are encouraged to contact either the Secretary, Debbie Stocks, on 0409 446 815, or President, Bob Lee on 02 6760 5897.

1. A judge will advise the assigned collar colour as the first competitor crosses the starting line.

2. Time for a run commences when the first of the three horses crosses the starting line.

3. Within a two minute time limit, a team will attempt to cut from the mob and pen three head of cattle with the same assigned collar colour.

A 30 second warning bell will be given prior to the end of the run.

4. A team can only call for time once. 5. To call for time one rider must stand in the gateway of

the pen, with only a minim of the horse’s nose to maximum of the shoulder in the pen gate and raise his/her hand after some, or all, of the assigned cattle are penned. The remaining 2 riders must be on the pen side of the starting line.

6. A team may call for time with only one or two of the assigned cattle penned, however, teams penning three head of cattle will place higher than those penning two head, and two head will place higher then one head, regardless of time.

7. Time cannot be given until the assigned cattle are in the pen and all other cattle are behind the mob end of the starting line.

If time is called before all spare cattle are back across the mob end of the starting line the team will incur a no time (disqualification).

8. No time will be given if incorrect assigned cattle are in the pen when time is called.

9. Any more than 5 head of cattle across the pen end of the starting line at any time incurs a no time (disqualification).

10. A team exhibiting any unnecessary rough handling or rushing at or into the mob at excessive speed, may be disqualified at the judge’s decision.

11. Once the run has commenced no rider can enter the pen to cut cattle out; all removal of cattle during the run from the pen is to be done on around the outside of the pen.

12. No whips can be carried into the arena. No hitting of the cattle with any object is allowed.

13. At the discretion of the judge a team may be awarded a re-run if one or more head of their assigned cattle is deemed unsuitable (health wise) or escapes the arena.

14. Competitors will only be called 3 times. If you are not at the “in gate marshal area” by the 3rd call, that run will be forfeited.

15. Riders must wear a hat, cap or riding helmet into the arena, riders 17 years and under must wear an approved riding helmet.

Polo shirts, long or short sleeves shirts with a collar must be worn. Suitable riding pants and riding footwear must be worn.

16. OHS / Public Liability Insurance Ruling - Stallions must be handled and ridden by a person over the age of 18 years.

DISPUTES 1. Initiating a Protest. When a team has a dispute about a run, a protest must

be lodged with a judge before the team leaves the arena. The team will then immediately file a p r o t e s t with the Judge / Director-In-Charge, putting up a $50.00 deposit for a decision. If sustained, the team will get its money back; if not, the money will go to the association.

2. Presenting the Dispute Findings. If a protest is filed, the Judge / Director-In-Charge shall

present said dispute, along with the $ 50.00 deposit, to the Judge / Director-In-Charge. The Judge / Directo r-In-Charge shall immediately present the findings and reasons to the protesting parties. Protest results should be decided and announced after the last team prior to that set of cattle exiting the arena.

he magnificent Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre at Tamworth, perhaps better known as AELEC, will certainly be the place to be between September

23rd and 26th, when Team Penning Australia will stage the 2010 Australian Team Penning National Championships. The four days of action will kick off with an Arena Sorting Social Competition Day on Thursday 23rd, before the first two rounds of the Championship are held on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th of September. Then on Sunday the 26th the top 30 teams from the first two rounds will go into the Championship Final on a clean slate, where they will be competing for three magnificent fender saddles valued at $7,000, generously supplied by the major sponsors for this years event, Heath and Krissy Harris of Hawkesbury River Saddle Company. Many people will know of Heath Harris from his involvement with the training of horses for feature films over many years, however in recent times he has also returned to his original trade of saddlery and harness making and is producing some of truly magnificent saddles through his Hawkesbury River Saddle Company.

For those who are yet to experience an event at AELEC you really should try to make the effort to attend these Championships and see for yourself what a wonderful facility it is. From the indoor seating and eating areas for the spectators, to the stabling and outdoor arena’s for competitors, everything is simply first class.

Enquiries about the 2010 Australian Team Penning National Championships have come in from all over Australia, and with entries already flooding in, the committee of Team Penning Australia are looking forward to the staging of yet another successful Team Penning event at AELEC, which has already been the scene of two successful Westpac Helicopter Charity Team Penning events staged in the past twelve months. Some Team Penning enthusiasts are even expected to attend the event from as far away as Western Australia, which just gives an indication as to the popularity of the sport and the buzz that these National Championships have created. With interest in Team Penning coming from all around the country at the moment, organisers are confident that this inaugural Team Penning National Championships will lead to bigger and better things within the sport. New clubs are springing up all over the country and with the increased numbers competing on a regular basis it is believed that this will translate into even larger National Championship events in the years to come.

any people involved with the equine world may recognise the name Heath Harris. He has been around for a long time, as a competitor, as a trainer and as an

instructor—just for starters. If you have seen a movie that has been made in the past forty years with horses in it, chances are that Heath Harris had something to do with it. The equine stars of movies like Phar Lap, The Man From Snowy River, The Black Stallion, The Legend of Zorro and Racing Stripes are just a few of those to have benefitted from Heaths touch. Heath Harris is one of the world's elite liberty horse trainers. He uses his experiences from over 40 years in nearly all the disciplines of the horse industry to get the best out of his charges and turn them into equine stars. Heath's areas of expertise reach far outside that of being a horsemaster or wrangler. He is also credited with stunt coordination and action direction, and with being an actor, presenter and producer.

Having purchased his first pony at 12, bought from Parramatta Sale Yards with money earned selling papers, it didn’t take long before the young Heath Harris was an accomplished horse dealer. At age of 14, much to the Lane Cove neighbour's disgust, Heath was buying and selling about four ponies a month which he kept in the back yard. At 16, Heath went bush - jackerooing, horse breaking, and contesting rodeos. He learnt about the outback, the ways of the men and the horses; about bushcraft and saddle making. In 1968 Heath settled down on a property he literally carved out of the bush at Ingleside where he ran a boarding stable, rode and bred competition horses, and started teaching actors to ride. Heath's abilities diversified - he became a fully qualified stunt co-ordinator, action director and second unit director, creative consultant to advertising agencies and producer/director. Above all, Heath developed a unique method of training and preparing horses and other animals for the film and television industry by utilising the animal's natural instincts to train him, he has become a world leading equine psychologist.

In all, Heath has horse-mastered, trained, stunt co-ordinated, and second-unit directed over 40 feature films and about 120 commercials and television series. It is because of his knowledge of all things outback and his great love of rural history, that Heath was creative consultant to Marlboro for 12 years. His knowledge of the desert again stood him in great stead when a representative of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayahan approached him in 1989 to train racing camels in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Heath, whom the desert people re-named Ra al Boitha (Arabic for 'shepherd of the white camel') spent 4 years living and working in the United Arab Emirates with the Bedouin. Heath's entrepreneurial skills were soon realised, and he was appointed Director of Desert Veterinary Services for the Abu Dhabi Government. Heath implemented a number of 'world first' scientific projects including the world's first successful embryo transplant and he designed and built the embryo transplant clinic for racing camels. He also implemented the world's first serious physiological studies into racing camels. This was achieved by Heath's skill as an animal trainer, as the test camels had to be trained to run on a treadmill so the scientific data was accurate. Heath and the team published in scientific journals on the subject. On returning to Australia in 1992, Heath got back into training horses, and stunt coordinating, whilst helping his wife Krissy put a seriously competitive showjumping team together. Krissy has been selected to represent Australia twice, at the World Cup Final in Sweden in 1997, and the World Equestrian Games in Rome in October 1998.

Heath's ability to co-ordinate people and animals abroad landed him the job as horse trainer on The Black Stallion television series in New Zealand, and the horse master and trainer on Derby produced by Jonathan Hackett, and filmed in South Africa and Kentucky in the late '90's.

Heath Harris Continued from Page 6 After many short stints doing commercials, providing animals for local soap operas, and stunt coordinating for specialist series such as Who Dares Wins, Heath travelled to Namibia in 1998 to work on a Jean Jacques Annaud Film, produced by Lloyd Phillips. From there it was a short way to England and Spain, for some project development work with Jim Henson's Creature Shop in 1999. Upon returning to Australia, Heath started training a new team of liberty horses to put his own live show together; "Heath Harris' Movie Magic" in which he explains to the audience how horses are trained for the movie business. He demonstrates how they "lie down and die", how to create "wild stallion attacks", and other fascinating secrets from behind the scenes. At the same time Heath started training an all girl-stunt riding team called "Girls, Girls, Girls". The troupe of seven trick riders and horses perform their daredevil stunts, whip cracking, and song-and-dance routines, to audiences all over Australia. In 2001, Heath was the creative consultant and also trained the liberty horses for The Man From Snowy River live arena production at Sydney Royal and Brisbane Royal. The following year saw Heath and Krissy back in Namibia filming the Young Black Stallion (IMAX) for Walt Disney Productions, and 2003 in South Africa for the feature Racing Stripes, a Warner Bros production. In 2004 however, after many years out of the business,

Heath has returned to his roots, going back to his original trade of saddlery & harness making. Leather Lining—The Untold Story Krissy found and gave to him for Christmas a 2nd hand western saddle that he had made over 30 years ago. He looked at it – the leather was still in good condition, but the sheepskin lining was moth eaten and worn away. He then looked across at an old Stubben Jumping saddle of Krissy’s – it was the same vintage, but in much better condition – it had leather lining and that was the difference. So – why not leather lining on a fender stock saddle? Doesn’t require counter lining, getting the saddle wet is no problem, no smelly sheepskin or kersey wool – and a bigger skirt area to distribute the weight over. So – this is the story – and now Hawkesbury River Saddlery Company sell most of our saddles with the low maintenance high quality leather lining.

Calgary father, daughter celebrate Open Class

Team Penning win CALGARY – A penning associate of Lonnie Hansen figured it was time for a little good-natured, post victory ribbing. All in fun, you understand. “Even a chicken gets a kernel every once in a while, eh, Lonnie?” she chuckled. “Or should we say a wrinkled-up rooster?” If Hansen has been waiting a long time to win a Calgary Stampede buckle in Team Cattle Penning, his 15-year-old daughter Skylar may well be the Stampede’s youngest winner in history in the Open Class, the highest-caliber of competition contested annually at The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The Calgary-based pair did it together on Sunday evening, though, winning the Open along with Lonnie’s longtime penning pal Jody Elliott of Lacombe, Alta. Victory for the trio is worth a cool $10,266 and three of those coveted, gold-and-silver handtooled Stampede buckles. Lonnie Hansen and Elliott have been trying their luck in the Stampede’s Team Cattle Penning for almost as long as the competition has been around. “Sweet. For Jody and me, it’s been coming a long time,” said Lonnie Hansen. “And with my daughter involved . . . I can’t think of two other people I’d rather celebrate this win with.” A race against the clock, Team Cattle Penning gives a team of three riders on horseback 60 seconds to separate three specifically identified cattle from a herd of 30 and direct them into a 16-foot-by-24-foot pen at the opposite end of the arena. Teamwork is key, with all three riders working in harmony to cut out the correct cattle and drive them to the pen. After beginning the competition with two rounds of preliminaries, along with 57 other triumvirates, on Thursday

at the Okotoks Agricultural Society, the trio arrived at the Saddledome on Sunday sitting seventh overall among the elite 20 entries heading into the third round and championship final. After runs of 37.35 and 43.01 seconds, on a night when the cattle were particularly rank, their performance stood up for victory. Hansen, Hansen and Elliott’s winning aggregate time for 12 head of cattle was 139.99 seconds, one second and change better than the 141.14 turned in by Travis Kaiser of Ontario, Wisc., Ken Kresbach of New Prague, Minn., and Russell Armstrong of Armstrong, B.C., who collected $6,844 as reserve champions. “You’re sitting on the fence watching the clock for the other teams,” said Elliott. “You don’t want to wish bad luck on anyone else, but you’re still hopin’. You just wait and see.” Skylar Hansen has been penning since she was four years old. So what will this 15-year-old Stampede champ do for an encore? “Maybe come back and win it again next year,” she suggested with a laugh. You can find more Calgary Stampede results on Page 22

ntroducing the first profile for what will be a regular feature in Team Penning Round-up, a special section dedicated to the working horse bloodlines that have made the cow horse

industry what it is today. This section will feature leading Quarter Horse, Australian Stock Horse and other breed bloodlines that have had an impact on the working horse industry. With the recent passing of the legendary Quarter Horse sire Smart Little Lena in the United States, we felt it would be only fitting that he be the first sire featured.

mart Little Lena, one of the cutting horse world's all-time leaders, both as a performer and as a sire, was humanely euthanized, at the age of 31, at his long time home in Aubrey,

Texas, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, following his suffering an apparent stroke. Shareholders in the Smart Little Lena Syndicate were notified by Robin Levison, the syndicate's secretary, stating that the horse's long time veterinarian, Dr. John McCarroll, Equine Medical Associates, had examined the horse. The veterinarian decided to euthanize Smart Little Lena so the horse would not suffer. “He’ll be cremated, and the remains will go in a little box in a trophy case at the ranch,” Levinson said. Tommy Manion boarded Smart Little Lena during most of his life. He said it was a sad day at Manion Ranch, adding the 1979 stallion had not been himself for a few days. "For about the last week, he'd been having a little problem with his balance," Manion said. "Then this morning [Aug. 30] he just apparently suffered a stroke. We immediately called Dr. McCarroll. He's always been his attending veterinarian. He came up and did everything he could for him. He thought it was definitely irreversible."

When asked about Smart Little Lena's place in history, Manion said, "I think he created an indelible image in our industry. He sired champion cutting horses, champion reining horses, champion working cow horses. And I don't think anyone will dispute the fact that he'll go down as the greatest broodmare sire there's ever been." Smart Little Lena was born in 1979 and was bred by Hanes Chatham of Pilot Point, Texas. He was sired by the great Doc O'Lena, one of only two foals produced by the legendary mare Poco Lena—both of . His dam was the Peppy San mare, Smart Peppy, who herself was from a daughter of Royal King. It was during 1982 and 1983 that the name Smart Little Lena became a household word in cutting horse circles, when he carried his career-long trainer and rider, the late Bill Freeman of Rosston, Texas, to the first Triple Crown in National Cutting Horse Association history. During that whirlwind period as a 3- and 4-year-old cutter, the horse earned a staggering $643,275, a figure that apparently still stands as a record today. During his career Smart Little Lena earned a total of $743,275 in the cutting pen (in just eight shows), No. 4, all-time according to Equi-Stat records, but his talents weren’t only limited to the arena, as he also achieved greatness as a sire, becoming one of the sport's most influential stallions. At the time of his death Smart Little Lena was ranked as cutting's No. 2 all-time sire, his offspring having earned more than $34 million in NCHA earnings, according to NCHA officials, in addition to $451,916 in National Reining Horse Association competition, $783,564 in National Reined Cow Horse Association competition and $196,499 at the AQHA World Championship Show. Smart Little Lena has also sired 18 AQHA World Champions that have won 22 World Championships. Smart Little Lena has also had a lasting influence in Australia, with names such as Lethal Lena (imp), Tassa Lena (imp), Dmac Daddy (imp), Smart Little Diablo (imp), Smart Little Scotty (imp) and Chuka So Smart (imp) being extremely well known in cow horse circles. A quick check of the Australian Quarter Horse Associations website shows there are sixteen sons and daughters of Smart Little Lena recorded with the AQH A, who between them…

n mid 2005 the Upper Hunter Team Penning Association (UHTP) was formed by a group of people who shared the same passion to develop the sport within the Hunter

region. Over the past five years of its existence the club has grown from roughly fifty members to over seven hundred members at this present time. With the Upper Hunter having the international reputation as the Horse Capital of Australia there was no doubt that another popular horse sport would be embraced by all.

From the beginning the committee decided that they wanted to provide a sport that catered for all horse enthusiasts of the family no matter what their skill level. With the aim of keeping this in mind and the hope to keep the participation cost to a minimum UHTP was assembled and is now in full swing across the Hunter district every month. Competition days at UHTP provide riders from all disciplines with a safe competitive environment, encouraged by good sportsmanship and a fun atmosphere. They are all about having fun with the opportunity to meet new people, improve your skills and just to have a go. UHTP hold their monthly competition days the first weekend of the month, rotating locations throughout the Upper Hunter. The UHTP association also provides a training day once a year so everyone can learn and improve on their skills no matter what kind of horse you own be it an Australian Stock Horse, Quarter Horse, Paint Horse, Pony, Shetland or any other breed your welcome at UHTP. Over the past few years the UHTP Assoc has been well represented at other competition day’s through-out NSW with our members competing at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and AELEC Team Penning Australia Championships. Club members also travel to Tamworth each month to participate in the Team Penning Australia Club days. At this year’s Sydney Royal Easter show UHTP Assoc Team 2 consisting of Doug and Loreen Porter and Malcolm

Gardner did our club proud by placing 1st in the Team Yarding Challenge on Friday 2 April with a time of 38 seconds. Not to be out done our other representatives consisting of Peter Tippett, Carmel Tippett and Paul Hugginson placed 5th with a time of 1 min 7 seconds. Other club members who represented other Associations at the show were Mark McNamara, Steve Burgess, John Atkins, Grant Douglas, Laura Gardner, Richard Charlton, Peter Riordan, Christine Booker, Ben Hartup, Alison Baker, Brodie Jones, Mark Judge, Geoff Berger, Janelle Osborne and Donna McMahon. At the 2009 Show Grant Douglas, Laura Gardner and Peter McLaren placed 6th and Peter Tippett, Carmel Tippett and Paul Hugginson placed 4th making UHTP very proud. In August, this year despite the weather being very much against us a very successful charity day was held at Singleton. The theme of the day was PINK. Amidst the howling winds and the mud some great times were recorded with Frank Daley, Brad McNamara and Matt McCarthy coming out on top with a 38.44 second run to claim 1st place in the open. Not to let the adults have all the fun the juvenile and the junior competitors also showcased their skills. Emma, Lauryn and Brittnee Crackett blitzed the field with an outstanding time of 36.38 seconds in the juvenile division while Kylie Fairfull, Blayne and Jessie Carey again showed excellent team work by winning the junior section with 43.46 seconds for 2 head penned. Money raised at this day was donated to, two very worthy causes. $1000 was donated to the Scone Breast Cancer Association Inc. and $1000 to the Singleton Women with Cancer Support Group. Again with the wind and the rain trying to deter us competitors travelled to Branxton on September 4th and 5th

for our monthly gathering. $1000 was split between St Marys and St Brigit’s Primary schools of Branxton to pay for the installation of some much needed air conditioners. The next big event on the cards for UHTP will be the running of our club championships being held at Aberdeen on the 2nd and 3rd of October. 200 plus runs will be had over this weekend with teams looking to take the converted crown as the 2010 UHTP Club Champions. The Mal Gardner Rural Fencing team comprising of Mal Garnder Doug and Loreen Porter will be looking to take this award home again for the 3rd

consecutive year in a row but will have some stiff competition. So if you enjoy meeting new people and having a laugh come and join us at UHTP were everyone is welcome. For further information contact Mark Judge – President on 02 6547 6118. Kellie Porter UHTP Ass. Promotions & Publicity Officer

t seems that everyone is getting in on the act with this Team Penning caper, with new clubs starting up all over the country.

One such club that has recently been formed, catering for team penning and cutting enthusiasts, is the Mid Western Working Horse Association , MWWHA., based in Mudgee, NSW. The aim of the club is to hold training days on the 4th Sunday of each month and regular prize money competitions. Whilst the Mudgee Showground underwent a major upgrade the club has been fortunate to hold their training days at the Tym family property, however will be holding their first training day on 26th September, 2010, (weather permitting) at their new showground venue, which now boasts a new steel arena, cattle yards, and stables. The club is also hoping to form a competition circuit with other team penning groups in the Central Tablelands. Team Yarding was once again a feature at the 2010 Sydney Royal Easter Show, with teams representing both Team Penning Australia and the Upper Hunter Team Penning Association performing extremely well. Team Penning Australia was represented by two teams comprised of Janelle Osborne, Donna McMahon, Geoff Berger, Laura Gardner, Richard Charlton & Grant Douglas. Of these, one team finished in third placing in the Association Challenge, with the second team unfortunately not managing a placing. In the Team Yarding Challenge the Upper Hunter No. 2 Team of Doug and Loreen Porter and Malcolm Gardner placed first, with placed first with a time of just 38 seconds, while the team consisting of Peter Tippett, Carmel Tippett and Paul Hugginson placed fifth with a time on 1 min 7 seconds. Before the fire—Do you have an RMP? In times of crisis, people worry not only about their family and property but also about their livestock and pets. There are steps that horse owners can take to prepare themselves in case their property ever lies in the path of an advancing bushfire. The key to survival is forward planning and self reliance. Leave or Stay? … It’s Your Decision Fire Authorities emphasise that bush fire protection strategies include forward planning. You are responsible for developing a survival plan for your family and horses. Leave or stay? … it’s your decision. The first and most important thing to decide is whether you intend to stay on your property if there is a bush-fire. Assess your risk from a fire and understand how safe your property would be if a fire occurred in the immediate area. If you decide you will leave, with or without your horses, you must do it early on a high-risk day and in advance of knowing there is fire in your area. The announcement of a Total Fire Ban should be the trigger for your decision. Late evacuation can be deadly. The risk of losing life and property during a bushfire is influenced by: • the location, aspect and accessibility of your property • the amount, type and location of surrounding vegetation • the condition and placement of buildings availability of water • your physical capabilities and those of family members and employees.

Everyone’s situation differs according to the size and nature of their horse enterprise. That’s why each and every horse owner needs to develop an individual survival plan, coolly and calmly, before the fire season arrives. Have a Plan If you live in a high risk area it is essential to develop a fire safety plan before the fire season. This may include a plan for early evacuation of horses to a safer district. Horse evacuations present unique problems. Make arrangements ahead of time for a place to temporarily relocate your horses. Options may include showgrounds, sale yards, parks, racetracks, pony club grounds or placement with family and friends. Identify several possible retreat routes from your property in case fires block your escape. Decide in advance which horses you will evacuate and make sure they are suitably trained for transport. Identifying a “safe” area on the property where horses can be placed if evacuation is not possible or practical. This area should be as large as possible and may be a closely grazed paddock or be created from several paddocks by opening gates. Ideally it should have a dam with clear access. An alternative “safe” area might be a large well fenced sand ménage provided there are no trees or building nearby that will burn readily. Post your plan in a clearly visible place together with the telephone number of the local fire brigade and your property’s CFA map reference. Make sure that everyone who lives, works or agists at your property understands the plan. On days of Total Fire Ban, putting your horses in the

designated “safe” area or, if you work away from the property, you might do this the night before. Things that may help your RMP: • Contact the Rural Authority in your area. • Have an annual meeting with neighbours, friends or other

mutual interest groups to discuss fire contingency plans and establish ahead of time who will check on and help whom and which resources will be shared.

• Set up a bushfire emergency plan with the landholder if your horses are agisted.

• Leave horses in well grazed paddocks if they are on “weekenders” in high-risk areas, or moving them to a safer location during the fire season.

• Reduce Fire Hazards Reduce fire hazards before the fire season starts: • remove all fire fuel such as excess grass, sticks, leaf litter

etc for 20 to 30 metres around buildings • store hay, straw, shavings, scrap wood, fuel supplies and

chemicals safely away from important buildings • clean roof surfaces and gutters regularly • create firebreaks in strategic locations develop a grazing

plan to reduce fire risk • a well maintained garden and well watered lawn will help

protect the house • use fire-resistant plants on your property • post “no smoking” signs in and around the stable and in

vegetated areas as appropriate • make sure chainsaws and other equipment are fitted with

an Australian Standards approved spark arrester • if you live in a high risk area , invest in a rainwater storage

tank, a sprinkler system and a firefighting pump • consider erecting fireproof fencing, ie steel or concrete

posts, particularly if you own a stallion • if your fences are electrified, make sure the remainder of

fences are “horseproof”, as often power is out during a bushfire.

Maintain a Fire Cache Tools to have on hand at your property: • a ladder long enough to reach the roof of buildings in case

of a roof fire • a minimum of 30 metres of pre-connected garden hose (or

adequate length to reach all parts of your buildings) with a spray nozzle

• a shovel for clearing vegetation and throwing dirt • a rake for clearing vegetation • water buckets • a torch • a battery-powered radio for monitoring news Keep these items together in an easily accessible place. Don’t let the tools be used for any purpose other than fire fighting. Mark them with red paint if necessary. Make sure everyone who lives, works, or agists at your property know where the cache is located.

Summer is coming. Are you ready for it? From Page 16 Prepare an Evacuation kit Equip a plastic rubbish bin (with lid) with the following: • wirecutters and a sharp knife • torch, portable radio and fresh batteries • water bucket • extra lead rope and head collar woollen blanket and towels • equine first aid items • whatever else you feel is essential for the first 24 hours. Store the kit in an easily accessible location and don’t use if for anything but emergencies. Identify Your Horses Microchipped will be more speedily reunited with their owners if separation occurs during a disaster. In an emergency at the very least be prepared to “paint” your name and phone number on the horse itself using livestock grease crayons like the ones used to number horses in endurance rides, or clip similar details on its hair coat or paint its hooves. Neckbands, hip stickers and identification tags on leather head collars can also be useful. If Fire Threatens Decide Quickly If you decide to evacuate with or without your horse/s, this decision must be made very early. Late evacuation is a deadly option. Once the fire is close, visibility will be very poor and travel will be hazardous. Fallen trees, powerlines, abandoned cars and even fire fighting vehicles can easily block roads. Even quiet horses may panic in a float filled with smoke or when exposed to the noise of sirens. Wear Safe Attire In the event that a fire threatens you, whether you decide to evacuate or stay, the right clothes can help shield you from

radiant heat, burning embers and flames: • cotton fabrics are essential. Synthetics can melt and cause

serious burns • wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves down or

a woollen jumper, and a wide brimmed hat • sturdy leather gloves, while cumbersome, are essential to

protect your hands from painful and disabling burns • leather boots are the safest footwear. Tennis shoes or

rubber shoes will melt, causing serious burns • wear a damp cotton scarf or handkerchief “banditstyle” to

shield your nose and face • goggles will help protect your eyes from smoke and burning

embers.

Fire-safe Gear for Horses The same principles for fire safe clothing apply to your horse: • don’t use synthetic (nylon or plastic) halters or lead ropes.

These may melt and cause serious burns to your horse and its handler

• Leather halters and cotton lead ropes, while generally not as strong as nylon, will be safer

• don’t use nylon fly masks or other synthetic tack or equipment.

Just do it! It has been shown time and time again, if you don’t take the above precautions within the next 24 hours, the chances are very good that you won’t do anything at all to prepare for a fire emergency.

Team Penning Australia’s second 2-day charity event was held on the weekend of May 15th and 16th at the Don Willis Indoor at Tamworth, again proving very successful. With teams travelling from Canowindra, Merriwa, Gunnedah, Uralla, Raymond Terrace and all local townships in the Tamworth area great fast times were scored on the day. The auction held at lunch time Sunday proved a great bonus, helping Team Penning Australia raise more than $2,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. These days cannot be held without the support of many sponsors and helpers, so to the sponsors that make these days happen, GDS Heavy Haulage, Radio 16am The Goanna, Ross Haulage, Kelly Yards, B&G Fabrications, Thunderbolt Trailer Centre, Gardner Rural Fencing, Tim Cone Freeze Branding and Whats Cook'n Good Look'n, Team Penning Australia would like to thank you all very much. And to all the volunteers on the day, riders and Westpac boys thank you as well. Arena Sorting was held on Saturday and Team Penning on Sunday. Both days were full days and riders enjoyed the two different days of sport.

eam Penners—and many people who enjoy other equine pursuits—were spotted gathering for a different kind

of event recently, when country music superstar Tim McGraw brought his Southern Voice Tour down under and played to sell-out crowds in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. There were many people catching up with friends from far and wide at the show, whether pre-arranged or by accident, that didn’t matter. We were all there to have a good time. At the second of his two Brisbane concerts at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Tim opened with a set of three high energy songs, starting with Real Good Man, which was then followed by a call familiar to most Australians when he yelled… “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie.” And like all good Aussies do, the 15,000 strong crowd responded as one with, “Oi, Oi, Oi”. “I love this place!” he continued. “My name is Tim McGraw, and these are the Dance Hall Doctors. We are your entertainment for the remainder of the evening. No bulls*@t, we’re just going to play music.” And that’s just what they did. For two hours straight. Playing nearly all his hits and supported as always by the sensational Dance Hall Doctors, the huge crowd was entertained by a show that simply amazed them. Not since Garth Brooks toured many years ago has an American country artist put on a show like this. Old favourites like Indian Outlaw, She’s My Kind of Rain and Don’t Take The Girl were interspersed with songs from the Southern Voice album, including Southern Voice and Still, while there were also some special moments, like when a young girl (his daughter it was thought) was asked to join Tim on the edge of the stage while he sat down and sang Just To See You Smile to her, or when he coaxed the crowd into singing Happy Birthday for his band member who turned 50 that day. But it was when he saved the best for last that generated the greatest response from the crowd, almost lifting the roof off the Entertainment Centre with a version of Live Like You Were Dying that was just amazing, before finally closing the show with The Cowboy In Me. And then it was over, with the night

going by all too quickly. But it was a show that will be remembered for a long, long time. At least until the next time he returns to our shores. For those who attended his Sydney concert apparently they were treated to something special when Tim’s wife, Faith Hill, herself a bona fide country music superstar in her own right, joined him on stage and they sang I Need You. Earlier in the evening two local acts, in Jonah’s Road and Steve Forde, got the crowd going with some l ive ly performances that entertained and delivered great country music with that rock-n-roll edge. Both acts did Australian Country Music proud... although the jury may still be out on Steve Forde’s change in style and image following the release of his new album Hurricane. One thing is certain though, we can hardly wait for Tim McGraw to come back down under again.

The Smart Little Lena Story Continued from Page 9 have a total of 1665 foals recorded with the AQHA, although there are also many more registered with other breed associations such as the Paint Horse and Australian Stock Horse Associations. Even though he has now passed on there is also one final chapter to the Smart Little Lena Story that is still being written. With the advances made in animal cloning techniques in recent years some members of the Smart Little Lena Syndicate have successfully cloned their famous stallion, with a number of his genetic clones having been produced, which it is felt are sure to be in demand from breeders. What impact these cloned versions of the super sire will have on the cutting horse industry is still unknown, but the prospect of there being more Smart Little Lena foals, albeit sired by clones and not the original himself, has galvanised the industry, both exciting and at the same time disappointing many participants, depending on which side of the fence they are sitting. One interesting thing to come from the cloning issue is that while the foals may be genetically identical to the original, there are still differences, the most easily recognisable of which is their different markings. How different they are from the original in other aspects remains to be seen however, although one cutting horse trainer and Smart Little Syndicate member who owned several of these clones, Phil Rapp of Weatherford, Texas, went on record as saying he intended competing on these clones in the 2009 NCHA Futurity. It is believed that these

plans didn’t eventuate however, for legal reasons which arose, although it would be very interesting to know just how these clones turned out as cutting horses themselves. One thing is for certain though, Smart Little Lena was an individual the likes of which is rarely seen and he will have a lasting influence on the Quarter Horse breed and on all cow horse competition for many years to come.

The blazes of Smart Little Lena (top) and his five clones, Alex, Bogy, Camby, Dave and Eli illustrate how genotype does not always reproduce phenotype.

Thorlakson maintains hot streak with 14 Class

team penning win CALGARY – Just like that renegade black steer, Lindsey Thorlakson saw her championship hopes slipping away Friday evening. Just as the Thorlakson trio was ready to start celebrating victory in the Calgary Stampede’s 14 Class Team Cattle Penning Competition, the stubborn bovine bolted back up the middle of the Pengrowth Saddledome infield. But with a stirring second effort, Thorlakson and her teammates corralled the cantankerous critter, rounded it up with its two mates, slammed the door, and finished the job. And suddenly Thorlakson, at 22, has three Stampede championship cattle penning buckles in 12 months and change. “That was a horrible feeling, for a few seconds,” the Carstairs, Alta., gal later admitted with a smile. “The steer turned, put on the brakes, and got back between us. But we knew we had a little room to breathe (as the last trio out in the 10-team final), and we’d been doing pretty well so far, so we just wanted to finish it off with some consistency.” As it turned out, the winning squad of Thorlakson, Russell Armstrong of Armstrong, B.C., and Pete Molnar of Langley, B.C., authored a comfortable margin of victory in cashing a winners’ cheque of $16,500. With a 43.27-second run in the final, their aggregate time for 12 head of cattle clocked in at 123.18 seconds, more than seven seconds better than the 130.80 turned in by the second-place team of Calgary’s Amy Carver, Ken Crawford of Okotoks, and Sal Howell of Calgary, who will spit the reserve champions’ prize of $11,000. That 43.27-second run also stood up as the fastest time of the final, which saw plenty of high jinks from two pens of restless cattle. “After (Friday’s third go), with all those fast runs, you’re thinking, ‘Wow, these herds are soft. People are going to have some smokin’ times,’ ” noted Armstrong, 20, who was riding Mary, an 11-year-old quarter horse mare. “But it just never really came together for a lot of teams. It seemed like one thing went wrong on every run.” The 14 Class, which is the second-highest caliber Team Cattle Penning competition at the Stampede next to the Open Class, began with 110 entries on Thursday at the Okotoks Agricultural Society, with the top 20 teams moving on to Calgary after two rounds of competition. Armstrong and Molnar, whose team cattle penning partnership goes back “a lot of years,” noted Molnar, “ever since he was just a little guy,” both celebrated their first

career Stampede team cattle penning win. “It would have been nice to finish with a bang,” said Molnar, who competed aboard Rebel, a 20-year-old quarter horse gelding and cattle penning veteran. “But we got ‘er done, and that’s what counts.” Thorlakson, who had no Stampede titles to her credit on Canada Day 2009, now has three. She was the only two-time cattle penning champion at the ’09 Stampede, as a member of the winning 10 Class and 7 Class teams. And it’s an eight-year-old quarter horse gelding known as Doc’s Little Sky, whom she affectionately calls Little Man, who’s carried her to victory all three times. “This feels pretty awesome. It’s pretty exciting,” she said. “I had really good luck last year, but we definitely had to earn it today.” A pair of defending champions in the 14 Class came oh-so-close to repeating on Friday. Phil Mainey of Victor, Mont., seeking his fourth Stampede buckle in nine years, had the best aggregate time of the bunch with his teammates Drew Lewis and Larry David after the first two rounds, but couldn’t keep the momentum going. Meanwhile, Kurt Robson of Carstairs authored Friday’s best time – 23.05 seconds – in the third round, along with teammates Jennifer Robson and Shaylene Hunter, but followed it up with a 54.77 in the final.

2011 Armidale Show Team Penning

Team Penning Round-up: September/October 2010 23

eam penners and enthusiasts of cattle working events in the New England area now have another place to go with the Northern Tablelands Western Horse Club,

based in Armidale NSW, staging team penning and other cattle events every second month. The club, which was established in 2006 by people interested in both western performance events and team penning, is now staging regular events following a stop/start beginning. Firstly the dreaded EI of 2007 called a halt to proceedings not long after they started, then when that crisis was finally just a bad memory they had the misfortune of having their regular venue, the Armidale Exhibition Centre building on the Armidale Showground, collapse during a massive hail storm, leaving them without a suitable home for their events. With the building of a new and much improved Exhibition Centre however, which was re-opened on the same site early in 2010, the club has had the chance to re-establish itself and has once again commenced staging both western performance and cattle oriented events. At this stage the club is alternating between the two types of events, running western performance events one month, followed by cattle events the following month, which gives all members the opportunity to enjoy their preferred type of event. So far in 2010 the cattle events they have held include several team penning days, which are attracting ever increasing numbers with each one held, as well as a cattle

working clinic which was given by well known trainer and competitor John Pokarier of Tamworth. The club was also involved with the staging of the inaugural Armidale Stockmans Challenge and Team Penning in June 2010, which was run jointly with the Armidale Show Society and the Armidale Campdraft Club as a fundraiser to assist with the construction of a canteen and office facility at the new Armidale Exhibition Centre. Plans are for this event to become an annual one, with all funds raised each year to be used to assist with upgrading facilities on the grounds. In coming months the club has more cattle events planned, with a Working Cowhorse clinic to be held on Saturday October 9th, followed by an Arena Sorting day on Sunday October 10th. There is also another Team Penning day set down for Sunday December 5th. Next year the club will also be involved with the running of both western performance and team penning events at the 2011 Armidale Show on March 5th. Also on the agenda for the near future is the development of their own club ground, in conjunction with the local Natural Horsemanship Club, which provide both organisations with a home base, although they will continue to use the magnificent indoor Exhibition Centre for all cattle events. The club caters for all level of riders and new members are always welcome. Anyone interested in the activities of this club can take a look at their website, www.ntwhc.com, or contact the Secretary, Peter Simpson, on 02 6772 8020 ah.
