It was so close, but magic 59eludes NicolasFOR all the world, the 20-foot birdie putton the 18th looked like it was trundlingtowards history.

But Nicolas Colsaerts’ effort slid justmillimetres wide and deprived the Belgian of becoming the first man to shoot a round of 59 in the 42-year history of the European Tour.

It happened during the opening round of thePortugal Masters at the Oceanico VictoriaGolf Club, and the 31-year-old had to signfor 60 after nailing seven birdies in his first12 holes, followed by eagles on the 15th and 17th.

‘Walking down 17, I told my caddie, “it's 59 ornothing”,’ said Colsaerts, world number 185.

‘I managed to make an eagle and then hit agood drive on the 18th. It's too bad the puttjust shaved the edge.’

A round of 60 has now been achieved 19times on the European Tour. American PeterUihlein did so twice in 2013, as didScotland's Scott Jamieson.

Just last year, Scot Craig Lee came within ashot of equalling the lowest-ever officialround at the European Masters.

The 36-year-old was in sight of the Tour'sfirst official sub-60 round with nine birdies inhis first 10 holes. But his two pars to finishstill gave him a course record 10-under-par 61.

France's Alexander Levy won the Portugaltournament after it was reduced to 36 holesby persistent rain.

Ryder Cup: The aftermathLEE Westwood has criticised the United StatesRyder Cup team for airing their ‘dirty laundry inpublic’ after their Gleneagles defeat.

Phil Mickelson rapped captain Tom Watson -sitting at the same press conference table -and European stalwart Westwood describedthe episode as distasteful.

‘I don't like to see people's great reputationsbeing brought down by something thatshouldn't really happen in public,’ saidWestwood. ‘It should all be done behindclosed doors and sorted out there - and notbe done in the media.’

Watson subsequently in an open letter saidhe took full responsibility for mistakes madein the United States' eighth defeat in the past10 Ryder Cups: ‘My intentions throughoutmy term as captain were both to inspire andto be honest.’

Westwood, who earned two points to move tofifth on the list of all-time Ryder Cup scorerswith 23, added: ‘I don't think anything goodcan come of all this (for the Americans).’

Westwood was part of the European teamthat lost at Valhalla under Nick Faldo'scontroversial leadership in 2008. The wasbeset with problems, but players kept theircounsel in the aftermath.

‘I think there were a lot of people disappointedin '08 but we tried to come together and notsay anything in public,’ added Westwood.

• On the positive side, all-time great JackNicklaus was fulsome in his praise for therole Hampshire’s Justin Rose played in theEuropean victory - see Page 8.

ONE step towards solving Britain’s housing crisis would be to build homes on golfcourses, said Business Secretary Vince Cable.

Mr Cable was commenting on London School of Economics research, reported in Tee Times, showing that more of Surrey is devoted to golf courses than housing.

Addressing a fringe meeting at the LiberalDemocrat party conference, Mr Cable saidthat if he were in a middle-income family inSurrey struggling to find a suitable home hewould “ask myself is a golf course sacred orare there better uses of the land?”.’

Mr Cable said it was a cliché to rely onbrownfield land for new developments andinsisted there must be a focus on using upagricultural land.

He told the meeting organised by the thinktank Localis: ‘Most people do want green, they want green, but they would rather haveit outside their own house than sitting 20miles away where they have no access to it.’

The LibDem said new housing was beingfocused on the south east because ‘peopleare not flocking to Burnley’.

According to Golf England, there are a 103clubs in Surrey, with 1,764 holes in total.Analysis by Inside Housing suggests that

150,000 hectares or 1.1 per cent ofEngland’s 13.4million hectares are taken upby golf courses.

Mr Cable’s comments were dismissed by SirPaul Beresford, Conservative MP for MoleValley in Surrey: ‘Vince Cable is into dancingand dance studios - perhaps we can turn allthe dance studios in Twickenham into carehomes. Would that help?

‘It is quite ridiculous. The employment itgives to Surrey people is enormous. Themoney it brings is enormous.

‘Look at the cars queued - you would think itwas Gatwick airport, whacking a little ballaround a bit of green.’

Staying strong for Owen Williams: the Gareth Edwards Golf Day

GOLF DAY SUPPORTS INJURED OWEN Kim, 19, is aMajor champKOREA’S Kim Hyo-Joo saw offKarrie Webb to win the EvianChampionship and become the thirdyoungest Major champion on theLPGA Tour.

Webb, 39, a seven-time major winner, held a one-shot lead going into thefinal hole in France. But the 19-year-old held her nerve on the 18th greento sink a birdie putt, which put thepressure back on Webb.

The Australian then had a putt tosave par and force a play-off, butnarrowly missed as Kim triumphedby one stroke. Kim had led after thefirst and third rounds of thetournament, taking a one-shot leadover Webb into the final day.

IT WAS a fairytale 10 years in themaking, a story of the man who wasnine times a golfing bridesmaid andnever the bride - until now.

The Cinderella golfer who finally went tothe ball at St Andrews and ended it in tearsof joy was world number 792, OliverWilson, who held on to win his firstEuropean title at the Alfred Dunhill LinksChampionship.

The Englishman, making his 228th start, finished ahead of a chasing pack whichincluded world number one Rory McIlroy towin by one stroke on 17-under.

Wilson played in the 2008 Ryder Cup butlost his European Tour card in 2012 andneeded an invite to play at the home ofgolf. As the realisation sank in on the 18th,the 34-year-old gave wife Lauren a long, long hug and the Twittersphere burst into atide of congratulations from his fellowprofessionals (see right).

Champagne

‘So many people had written me off andthat hurt, but I kept believing,’ said Wilson, whose victory brought him a winning purseof almost £500,000.

‘A lot of people had a part in this and Ican’t thank them enough. This is prettyspecial. I could be drunk for a while - it’sbeen a long time coming and I have a lot of champagne on hold. It’s going to be agood party.’

His playing partner Tommy Fleetwood couldhave sent the tournament into a play-offbut missed a 10ft putt for birdie on 18 to

hand the emotional Wilson victory and atwo-year European Tour exemption.

Mansfield-born Wilson was ranked 104thon the second-tier Challenge Tour withearnings this season of around £10,000. Inthe round of a lifetime, he dropped just oneshot in his final circuit of 70.

‘I don’t have the words for it,’ he added.‘It’s been 10-11 years coming, and ninerunner-up finishes where nothing reallywent my way. To have the invite to playhere, I can’t thank people enough. When Icame here at the start of the week I wasjust trying to make the cut and each daymy confidence grew.

‘I’ve been playing pretty well but I went tosee Rob Rock (the man credited with thebest classic swing on tour) two weeks agoand spent a lot of time working with him onmy swing. He gave me confidence to goand play.’

Wilson went into the final round with athree-shot lead but lost it over the front nine.

McIlroy, who confessed to feeling ’a little bitflat’ after the euphoria of the Ryder Cup theprevious week, got off to the worst possiblestart when he double-bogeyed the openinghole after seeing his ball spin back into theSwilcan Burn.

Chasing his fifth win of the season, theworld number one bounced back with fourstraight birdies and was tied for the leaddown the back nine but bogeyed thedifficult 17th when he rolled his putt fromoff the green into the Road Hole bunker.

Playing the pro-am event alongside hisfather Gerry, who was celebrating his 55thbirthday, McIlroy birdied the 18th to getwithin one but just came up short.

‘I probably lost it on those two holes, thefirst and the 17th but it was fantastic toplay with my dad and for him to play StAndrews on his birthday was very special,’said McIlroy.

Much has been written about the longhitting and low scoring on the US Tourand the European Tour. David Duval, remember him, recorded a fabulous 59in the last round of the Bob HopeClassic in 1999 and hit the headlines.

That score has still to be achieved on theEuropean Tour, whilst there have beennumerous 60’s, the latest by Andy Sullivanincluded a hole in one which won him a tripinto space.

Conversation about that result, raised thequestion of the best score ever achieved over18 holes, when and who did it.

Until recently it was thought that there werefour scores of 55 holding that honour, all ofthem in the USA. E F Staugaard atMontebello Park California in 1935, very little is known about the facts surrounding this, and it is said to be suspect, although it is recorded in both the USGA and R&A publications.

A more modern 55 was achieved by HomeroBlancas, a Ryder Cup player, but while still anamateur; before he turned pro he played inthe Premier International at Longview Texas.

He went out in 27 shots, came home in 28for a score of 55. He had 13 birdies and oneeagle, and took only 20 putts, on the par 70layout, amazing golf.

In May 2004, Steve Gilly, a pro who had wonover two dozen mini tour events was playinga friendly round with two buddies at theLynwood Golf & Country Club.

His score of 55 was achieved against a parof 71, though the course was less than 6000yards, a great score nevertheless.

The current record is held by a little knownAustralian professional named Rhein Gibson.Born in New South Wales, he attendedOklahoma Christian University where he wasan All American Collegiate player.

On 12th May 2012 at River Oaks Golf Club inOklahoma, Gibson started on the back nineand went out in just 26 shots. He then playedthe front nine in 29 to record a score of 55over the 6850 yard par 71 course, andwaltzed into the Guinness Book of Records.Rhein Gibson plays on the minor professionaltours in the USA and at the time of hismarvellous round he was ranked 1,444th inthe world. His scorecard contained twelvebirdies, two eagles and just four pars.

Much was written about that round, but thescore had stirred something at the back of

my mind, an article I had read in Golf Weeklyover fifteen years ago. Digging round in thearchives I located the magazine, and readthe piece with a smile, for this was indeedthe first genuine 55 on record and it wasdone here in England. The tale had beenbrought to light by the publication of anamusing series of anecdotes in a book calledGolf is a Dangerous Game and written byT Wilson Goad, a member at Kirkby LonsdaleGolf Club; I have it on my bookshelves.

More than sixty years ago, professional FredSmith, lived at the Woolacombe Bay GolfClub in Devon. He was an accomplishedgolfer, who was sponsored by Dunlop at thattime; he received a retainer of £6.00 a yearto play their golf balls. He spent his sparehours in the winter of 1935 trying to break60 on the 4248 yard course, which was par70 at that time. On New Year’s Day hecompleted the Woolacombe course in just 55shots. Sadly the course does not exist today;it was devasted by American Armed Forcesin the Second World War and was neverresurrected. Fred’s old playing partner shedlight on the great man describing him thus.

If he was on the green he never thought oftwo putts, expecting every one to go in, andthey usually did.

Sometimes he hit putts straight, but moreoften with spin on and curved them in, veryuseful when tackling the stymie, which wasstill legal at that time.

He was a wiry little man, less than five feetsix inches tall, and no weight at all, at the topof his swing he did a loop, a sort of figure ofeight, similar to Jim Furyk today.

Fred’s son explained that the course wasfrozen that December, and the ball would runfarther. Although he was playing with hickoryshafted clubs, but he still drove the ball wellover 200 yards.

He started trying to beat 60 early in theDecember, and got close on a number ofoccasions, then on the 1st January 1936 hewas well on target when he arrived at the18th tee, then surprised his playing partnersby finishing off with a hole in one, and ascore of 55 shots.

The ironic thing was that he had played 17holes with his customary Dunlop ball, but forsome unexplained reason he changed hisball to a Slazenger for the tee shot and thenholed out. That snippet of information wascertainly hushed up a little when the recordwas reported.

Fred Smith went on to become professionalat Windermere in the fifties, and then toGrange Fell. He had had a hard life in hisyounger days, living onsite, mowing 18 holesin the mornings before even thinking of beingable to play. The pro was a cross betweengreen keeper, maintenance man and golferpro. He died in the middle of a round of golfat Benham when he was 80 years old, andstill playing to an 8 handicap.

For many years his feat was in the GuinnessBook of Records, until they changed thelength of the course necessary forqualification, due to the advantages of modern balls and equipment. Be that as it may, it remains a score that may never be beaten.

SOMEBODY has to follow the Captain Fantastic exploits ofPaul McGinley as Europe’s next Ryder Cup captain - and itwill not be the man himself.

The 47-year-old, roundly applauded by everyone includinghis players for the way he set up this year’s victory, hascounted himself out of the role for 2016.

McGinley has a perfect six-hitting Ryder Cup record, winning three times as a player, twice as a vice-captain andmemorably as captain at Gleneagles: ‘Like a heavyweightfighter, I will retire undefeated.’

But McGinley will play a big part in the coming months aspart of a five-strong panel selecting the next Europeancaptain for Hazeltine, Minnesota.

Winning captains McGinley, Jose Maria Olazabal and ColinMontgomerie, along with European Tour chief executiveGeorge O’Grady and a players’ committee representative, will make up the selectors.

Darren Clarke and 2014 vice-captain Miguel Angel Jimenezhave emerged as the main contenders. The bookies havealready installed Clarke, 46, as 1 to 4 favourite. Jimenez islikely to be backed by compatriot Spaniard Olazabal and byMcGinley, who chose him as one of his five vice-captainsthis year.

O’Grady and Monty may well go for Clarke, leaving thecasting vote with the players’ committee man. It was widelythought that this would be Thomas Bjorn, but the place hasgone to David Howell, Ryder Cup winner in 2004 and 2006.

McILROY was imperious, McDowell was gritty and Donaldson had the glory of thewinning shot.

But for Jack Nicklaus and many observers, the choice of stand-out team player in thevictorious European Ryder Cup side was Hampshire’s Justin Rose.

As the spoils of Europe’s 16½-11½ victory against the United States at Gleneagles werecounted, Rose emerged as the continent’s foremost player with four points.

Eighteen-time Major champion Nicklauslooked down from his exalted position as agolfing icon and declared: ‘Rose is the bestplayer on the European team. I like Justin. Ilike the way he plays, the way he carrieshimself. He is a good competitor. First rate.A class act, on and off the course.’

Rose won all his three matches with HenrikStenson. His fourball with Stenson, againstMatt Kuchar and Bubba Watson, broke allthe records and will probably go down asone of the best four-man slugging matchesever seen in the Ryder Cup. The Eurosregistered 12 of the 21 birdies in thematch, and Rose was the star of the showwith seven of them. He went on to grab acrucial half with Martin Kaymer in Saturdayafternoon’s foursomes to give Europe themomentum going into Sunday.

Chosen by captain Paul McGinley to be oneof two players to take part in all fivematches - the only other was McIlroy - Rosecame up against a gritty competitor inHunter Mahan in the singles.

The 34-year-old Englishman, attached toNorth Hants Golf Club in Fleet, dug deepinto the well of experience which began

when, as a 14-year-old club junior, he wonthe famous Hampshire Hog tournament witha record winning score, and climaxed asU.S. Open winner in 2013.

On Ryder Cup Sunday, Rose went four downafter six, but clawed and battled to the endto secure a half on the last hole and keephis unbeaten record intact, returning thehighest individual total of any European, including McIlroy.

Four points out of five took his record over three Ryder Cups to 10 points from 14 matches, and the quiet young man from Hampshire even showed some fist-pumping exhilaration.

Invoking the Ryder spirit of Seve Ballesteros,Rose fist-touched a huge image of the

immortal man as he made his way through the tunnel towards the first tee onthe final day.

And there was even a touch of Seve aboutthe way Rose responded when he got stuckin some gorse on the 13th hole. He hit aSeve-style escape to within two feet of theflag, turned to a nearby TV cameraman witha grin and called the shot ‘a bit of Seve for ya!’

He said afterwards: ‘When I walked up tomy ball it was in the gorse bush and Ithought I’m dead here. All I could do wastry to punch out an eight iron. Seve was athis best when he was trying to makesomething out of nothing. I’ve beenwatching footage of him doing that mywhole life, so that’s why I thought of him. Itjust felt so Ryder Cup.’

Justin Rose seems to be poised to take overthe mantle of Ryder war horses such as LeeWestwood and Ian Poulter. Having turned inone of the finest European performances inthe competition for the past 30 years, hehas surely signalled that he has taken hisplace at golf’s matchplay top table - andthat the feast has just begun.

Follow that! Clarke is 2016 favourite

U.S. needsits own ‘12Musketeers’THE acrimonious fallout from the RyderCup beating which the United Statestook at Gleneagles carried on long afterthe event - and could do so for quite awhile yet.

The bottom line is that the Americans couldnot match the camaraderie and team spirit ofthe European team. They never seriouslybonded as a group and seemed unable tofind their own version of Paul McGinley’s 12Musketeers - who were forged into an all-for-one and one-for-all unit.

The public criticism by Phil Mickelson of 65-year-old Tom Watson - described by oneobserver as a ‘terrible act of betrayal’ -directly or indirectly raised questions aboutthe captain’s age, his lack of personalcontact with his players orunderstanding of them, his choices of playerpairings and when to playthem, and his lack ofinvolvement of others inhis decision-making.

Mickelson was left out on the Saturday, pleaded in vain to play, and played smilingassassin to his skipper in the inquestafterwards: ‘Unfortunately, we have strayedfrom a winning formula in 2008 for the lastthree Ryder Cups, and we need to considergetting back to that formula that helped usplay our best,’ he said, referring to formerskipper Paul Azinger.

Watson, who as a player is much loved byBritish golf fans, would not be drawn into apublic slanging match. He said of Mickelson:‘He has a difference of opinion. That’s OK.My management philosophy is different than his.’

Former Europe captain Nick Faldo saidMickelson had ‘thrown his captain rightunder the bus. That should have been aprivate conversation. Phil certainly doesn’trespect Tom Watson.’

Colin Montgomerie, winning captain in 2010,agreed that Mickelson’s comments wereinappropriate: ‘You support your captainunder all circumstances. In public, yourespect and honour your captain.’

Azinger, America’s only winning captain hiscentury, later said he is open to thepossibility of leading the United States in2016: ‘I’m not going to rule anything out.’

PREPARE LIKE A PRO SERIES• Master Pro British PGA• PGA of Europe 5 star Professional• European Tour and Senior Player• Ryder Cup and World Cup Player• International Coach

Over the past few months we haverelated the golf swing/preparationto that of the business man /

women and how he / she would preparefor a presentation be it to an individual a group or a golf ball.

We would run through the basics, prepare forevery eventuality, the questions that might beasked and the questions we would askourselves during the following session.

The golf swing could be put in the samebracket, ie the question we need to addresswhen preparing ourselves for the next shot:

Our preparation at address:

• The posture dictating the plane of the swing

• The grip which controls the face of the club

• Our alignment

These three elements having beenthoroughly checked at address we now needto confirm the position of the ball in relationto our feet.

If the ball is too far forward in our stancethere would be a tendency to have theshoulders aiming too far to the left ataddress (or too far right if left handed) and for the weight to be too much on thefront foot.

Very rarely do you see a golfer with the balltoo far back in his stance but it can happen, this would lead to the club face being openat address and the shoulders closedresulting in a push.

Some of us will remember being told that theball should be placed a fraction behindcentre for all wedges and nine irons andprogressively be moved forward with eachlonger club.

What with the ball position moving with everyclub things could get very confusing!

Thank goodness along came people likeJack Nicklaus who advised the choice of twoball positions to simplify things. Keeping theball in the same position for all shots makeslife a lot easier.

If you imagine the centre of the swing beingthe head (the axis point) then the bottom ofthe swing will be under that spot but by

having the ball in different positions wouldlead to indifferent strikes.

We in fact need to position the ball slightlyforward of centre because due to centrafugalforces the weight shifts laterally forward onthe down swing moving the bottom of the arcthat bit forward.

We have all heard of the late hit, after a goodbackswing then we have a late hit, it is theweight moving forward that gives us that late hit.

As I have demonstrated in the photos, try tokeep the ball in the same position with allirons, it is the back foot that moves thuspositioning the ball in the required position.

It is advised that with all the woods the ballbe positioned opposite the front heel.

Returning back to the lateral weight shift, because the swing with a wood is at it’soptimal width, with the force the swing

generates the ball needs to be placedforward as there is a more lateral movement.

Also we are trying to hit the ball slightly onthe up swing to create top spin to make theball roll further when landing on the fairway.

On certain occasions when we find the ballon an upslope we might want to place theball in the centre or possibly just behindcentre of our stance because, due to theslope, the weight transfer from back to frontfoot will be less, putting the bottom of theswing more in the middle of our swing.

For the down slope, the ball will need to be placed slightly forward of centre. Theweight will move more laterally resulting inthere being more weight on the front foot at impact.

Other than on a slope try keeping thingssimple. With all irons, try to keep the ball inthe same position and let the back foot moveto influence the position of the ball. With all woods, keep the ball opposite thefront heel.

Circumstances will dictate but as with ourbusiness colleague we should prepare thebasics the best we can so that we have tohave a platform to work from.

Q Do you have regular lessons?A Yes, I’m attached to the Robert Rock Academy in Lichfield,

Birmingham. Robert coaches me and has done for the past18 months. I see him regularly when we are not attournaments plus we always keep in touch over the phone- I send him my swing so we can discuss it. He’s been afantastic coach and mentor, and my game continues toimprove under his tuition.

Q What would you say is the strongest part of your game? A My drive. I’m extremely straight off the tee and average

260 yards which is a good distance.

Q What was your biggest motivator for turningprofessional?

A I achieved a handicap of +4, and I’d represented Wales inall the International Teams. I’d been included in the CurtisCup, played in the Junior Solheim Cup,and had also won a numberof top amateur tournamentsso I felt the time was rightto turn pro.

For me, it was always going to be the next step.

For ladies whotake their golf seriously

Lady golfers are easy enough to please. As long as everything is exactly as it should be, we’re happy. All we expect is an unhurried pace, a friendly atmosphere and a course that’s in great condition all year round. Preferably with stunning views. Wales can oblige with 202 superb golf courses – and plenty of restaurants, galleries, shops and spas. For ladies who are equally serious about seaweed wraps.

Q What have been the highlights of yourfirst year as a professional?

A My first pro win on the LET (Ladies’European Tour) Access Tour at theAssociation Suisse de Golf Ladies’ Open. This gave me a huge confidence boost. Ithen went on to compete in both Germanyand the Czech Republic where I finishedfourth and third respectively. It has been agreat experience for me to play alongsidethe top LPGA (Ladies’ Professional GolfAssociation) players and compare mygame with theirs.

Q Presumably there are also low points?A Yes. Missing the cut in Holland after being

on the leader board after 27 holes wasreally disappointing. I had a terrible backnine, but you just have to learn from it andmove on.

Q How do you progress from the LETTour to the LPGA?

A There are two ways. You can either go to theLPGA Qualifying School in the US to get yourcard, or do well in the Major tournaments sothat you start getting invitations. I’m currentlyweighing up my options.

Q I see you qualified for the US Openand the British Open this year?

A Yes, I won at the Buckinghamshire GolfClub with a 271 (-2) to qualify for the USOpen at Pinehurst and even though Ididn’t make the cut, simply being thereand playing in such a prestigioustournament was a truly memorableexperience. Plus, I was also very fortunateto qualify for the British Open. The firstthree leaders at the European Mastershave automatic entry, and although Ifinished 11th the eight girls above me hadalready qualified which meant I was ableto qualify and play at Royal Birkdale, whichagain, was a fantastic experience.

Q You’ve obviously played somewonderful golf courses around theworld, so which is your favourite‘away’ course to play?

A Kingsbarns in Scotland. I LOVE it! It’s themost beautiful course to play, and I qualifiedthere for the British Open in 2013.

Q What hobbies do you have outside golf?A I like going to the gym, listening to music,

and spending time with friends.

Q What’s your favourite club in the bag?A My Odyssey putter! I hole out well with it

and it’s one of the strengths of my game.

Q Do you play with ladies' or men’s clubs? A I play with men's Cobra clubs and really

believe they have helped my game this year.

Q Which golfing event would you love towin above all others?

A The Evian or Kraft Nabisco. I would alsolove to be a part of a Solheim Cup team - Irelish team golf!

Q Do you do any golf-related gym exercises?

A Yes, I go to the gym regularly as I think it'simportant to feel and look good on the course.I mainly work on my strength and cardio.

Q Who are your golfing heroes?A I will always admire Tiger Woods and

everything he has done, and will do, forthe game of golf. Plus I’m also a huge fanof Annika Sörenstam – I’ve always lookedup to her, and recently read her biographywhich covered her personal life as well asher career … it was fascinating.

Q What golfing tip would you give toother young golfers?

A I would always get the young juniors tostart with their short game as that is themost important part of the game. Everyonecan hit the ball half decent, but it takes alot of skill to have a great short game. They should also enjoy it - it's an amazingsport, and I am very lucky to be able toplay golf as a career.

Q What is the best piece of advice youhave ever been given?

A Practise your short game!

Hampshire Ladies GolfBeverly’sBIG Secrets– Beverly HukePutting is the easiest part of golf – or at least it should be.

The technical requirements of a putting“swing” are so much simpler than any

other part of the game. But sometimes we tryso hard to make the putter swing correctlythat we forget that “seeing” the direction and“feeling” the distance of a putt are whatreally counts.

Try the practice drill opposite (Picture 1): Puttwhilst looking at the hole. Yes, you can stillhit the ball and you’ll get a much betterfeeling for both direction and distance.

Picture 2 – when you play, before you swing, half turn your head towards the hole.

You should still be able to see the ball butyou will also retain the perception of wherethe hole is and be able to judge bothdirection and distrance.

If you would like me to help you make thoseputts, please call 07973 307880or check out www.beverlyhukegolf.com

The wonderful summer thatcontinued throughout Septemberhelped to make HLCGA eventssuccessful and the two AutumnMeetings were no exception. Theseare very popular events in theHampshire calendar.

There are plenty of nett and gross prizeson offer plus trophies. In additioncompetitors also play for trophies for thebest aggregate nett and scratch scoresafter adding the scores from theChampionship rounds played atStoneham in May. So.. plenty to play for.

Division 2 (21 – 36 hcap) was held atBotley Park. They were great hosts bothon the course and in the clubhouse andeveryone enjoyed their day. The coursewas in beautiful condition with reportsfrom players of lots of run, fast greens, and absolutely no complaints.

The best round of the day belonged toCarol Evans of Gosport & Stokes Bay whoreturned a handicap dropping nett 66.

2 shots behind was Jackie Richards fromCorhampton. Elizabeth Hesse (Alresford)earned the best gross prize with 91.

The trophies for the best aggregate nettand gross scores were also awarded. Thetwo players who managed to put togethertwo good rounds 4 months apart wereAlix Goddard (Shanklin & Sandown) withnetts 69 and 76, and Jenny Garner(Weybrook Park) with gross 91 and 101.

The sun also shone at Hockley GC forthe Division 1 meeting. The course waslooking at its very best and the playersobviously enjoyed the day with many good

scores ensuring that CSS stayed equal toSSS at 73. We were delighted to be atHockley in the year that they celebratetheir 100th anniversary.

The best gross of the day was 75 postedby Kerry Smith who was presented withthe Meeting Scratch Coasters.

Her 75 was 3 better than the next bestscore from Lynne Cowser (Alresford), SaraBarnes (Romsey), and Elly Gardner(Hockley). Back in May at the CountyChampionship Kerry had also scored 75in the morning round and her aggregate150 was 5 ahead of the nearest (EllyGardner) and so she was also presentedwith the Scratch Porringer.

There were 9 players who played belowtheir handicap. Lynne Cowser may havemissed the scratch prize, but she madesure of the Meeting Nett Salver with her 4under 69. Great score off a 9 handicap.

Kay Walshe (Hockley), and RoyalWinchester players Pauline Davies andCookie Bridgeman had 71.

Cookie also scored 71 at Stoneham andso her consistency was rewarded with theAggregate Nett Cup.

A HAMPSHIRE-based tee signagecompany is offering golf clubs a free,one-stop-shop type of service which isaimed at pushing it to the forefront ofthe industry.

Premier Golf Promotions Ltd says some teesignage companies fail to build up a reallygood, long-lasting working relationship withcustomer clubs who feel they have got theirfingers burned by poor service.

Managing Director Gary Wootton says: ‘Ilooked around and I saw that some teesignage companies were not really gettingclose to a good, long-lasting workingrelationship with their client clubs.

‘I could see that there was not enoughcontact or interaction throughout somethinglike a five-year contract. But we should notall be tarred with the same brush, and weaim to prove to our customers that we aredifferent and offer a different kind of service.

‘We have set out to offer a win-win situationall round - for the club, its members, thesignage sponsors and us.’

The relationship begins not with cold callingor the dreaded telephone marketing, butpersonal face-to-face contact, and isfollowed up with a strikingly full service tothe client golf club, which includes:

• Full complimentary tee signage (typically,

an 18-hole course is provided with 19signs - one for each tee and a large courselayout/welcome sign)

• A huge business-to-business data base•Access to a complimentary design team • Complimentary marketing support - not to

replace in-club marketing experts but toenhance the operation

‘Others charge for some of this, we do itfree,’ said Mr Wootton. ‘If we do not bringsponsors on board, that is our problem.’

If a contract is not closely shepherdedthrough the years, he said, and a golf clubhas a new owner, new ideas or a newsecretary who were not involved at thebeginning, the personal contact can be undermined.

‘I have introduced a marketing campaign forgolf clubs that fuels a good workingrelationship. It is a partnership. We look aftersponsors and offer marketing support.

‘We buy huge amounts of data, wecampaign for the club, bring in sponsors, and use our data base which coversthousands of businesses in the area tosupport the club in activities such asmembership campaigns.’

So the placing of tee signage is just thebeginning? ‘Certainly,’ said Mr Wootton. ‘It isnot just the signage, but we are there tosupport the club during the whole contract.

‘We are based in the area and have in placea selling team, marketing team, designersand tele-sales, all in-house. We do not useagencies.

‘We believe our customer service is secondto none. I would be very surprised indeed ifthere is another company out there whichcan match our all-round service.’

Premier Golf Promotions does not promotetwo clubs in the same area: ‘That would giveruse to a conflict of interest,’ said MrWootton. ‘Our pledge to clubs who make aninquiry is that they will receive personalattention and all the resources at ourdisposal.’

Part of the arrangement with client clubs isthat they provide vouchers which go tosponsors of the tee signage. But there areterms and conditions which ensure that thehost club is comfortable: vouchers must besubject to availability; sponsors must pre-book tee times that fit in with the club’spriorities; if a group of eight or more playersare involved, sponsors are asked to pre-booka meal at the club; and sponsors areexpected to use other club facilities.

‘We respect the club and its members,’ saidMr Wootton.

TOUR EXTENSION IN MOROCCOTHE Ladies European Tour has extendedits agreement with the Hassan II GolfTrophy Association to stage Lalla AichaTour School under the high patronage ofHis Majesty King Mohammed VI inMorocco for a further three years.

The Lalla Aicha Tour School was firstplayed in Marrakech, Morocco, in 2012and grew with the addition of threepre-qualifiers in Rabat.

Qualifying School was renamed LallaAicha Tour School in honour of Her RoyalHighness Late Princess Lalla Aicha.

The first Arab woman ambassador(London and Rome), Her Royal Highnesslate Princess Lalla Aicha took part in theHassan II Golf Trophy and Lalla MeryemCup since the 1970s and played 18holes every day until she passed awayin September, 2011.

THE COLOUR-CODED SWINGGRIP it and rip it, right? Not any more.

Top players these days have swingcoaches, short-game coaches, puttingcoaches, diets and gym regimes to keepthemselves at the top of their game.

And now a new training tool has arrivedfrom a company named Swing Catalyst- a machine which analyses a player’sbalance and foot pressure.

The 3D Motion Plate consists of morethan 2,000 high-resolution pressuresensors and provides critical dataincluding detailed foot pressure

analysis, accurate pressure distributionand other factors which cannot bedetected by the best-trained eye or eventhe highest-speed cameras.

It gives a complete analysis of torqueand ground forces generated during thegolf swing.

Sean Foley, coach of Hampshire’s RyderCup hero Justin Rose, has one at hishome in Orlando, and Rose has now hadone installed at his home in the Bahamas.

Foley said: ‘The system allows me toexamine weight-shift patterns and balance.’ Heat from the feet: How the new system records weight distribution and pressures during the golf swing

The 21-year-old from Pretoria ended on 12-under and two strokes clear of home favouriteCarlota Ciganda after four rounds, with BethAllen of the United States a stroke further behindin third and England’s Charley Hull in solo fourthplace. ‘I’m so happy, I was so nervous todayteeing off and being able to keep going andmake an eagle on the back nine gave me agood feeling for the day,’ said Chen.

Bags of moneyfor Kim’s mumGIVE a teenager a pile of money and whatwill they buy? An X Box, the latest phoneor a wide-screen TV for the bedroom?

Not so with Hyo Joo Kim, who fired astunning 10-under 61 - the lowest everround in a men’s or women’s Major - to sendher on her way to victory in the EvianChampionship in France.

With her first-place winnings of $487,500,Kim vowed to buy ‘many, many designerhandbags’ . . . for her mum. The 19-year-oldbecame the 10th South Korean to win aMajor, reinforcing the Asian country’s hugeimpact on golf in recent years.

But Kim’s 10-birdie feat and her place as thethird youngest ever to win a Major did not goto her head: ‘My goal is have a goodexperience in here, that’s all,’ she said.

The previous lowest round in a women’sMajor was 62, by Minea Blomqvist at the2004 Women’s British Open at Sunningdale, which was equalled by Lorena Ochoa at the2006 Kraft Nabisco Championship. Thelowest round in a men’s major is 63, whichhas been recorded many times.

THE idea of a mixed-gender ‘Ryder Cup’ tournament has been given the backing ofthe world number one lady player, Stacy Lewis.

A competition of this kind and stature does not exist in the sport, although a mixed even wasintroduced for the first time at the Youth Olympics this year.

The 29-year-old United States player told BBC Sport: ‘It would be a great thing. Anything likethat would help sell our sport. I’d be a huge fan. I’d be all over it and love to play.’

Lewis has played in two which currently takeplace during odd years, while the Ryder Cuptakes place in even years. In the seasonsbetween Ryder Cups, a USA team playagainst International counterparts in theestablished Presidents Cup.

Two-time Major winner Lewis, the 2013 Britishopen champion, said: ‘The scheduling will bethe hardest part. But we have a Women’s PGAchampionship (formerly the LPGAChampionship) beginning next year, so we’reestablishing a relationship with the men’sgame - maybe that could lead to something.’

PGA chief Pete Bevacqua told BBC Sport therewere no plans in hand for a new matchplayevent but added: ‘Although it’s not on our

radar, it’s an interesting idea. Never say never. As the women’s game continues to developand grow, then maybe that is something thatis down the road. It’s so difficult to find three, four, five days in the season. It becomesincreasingly difficult to give serious thought tocreating new events. But the more we can domixed events, the better it will be for thegame. Anything we can do to make golf moreattractive and compelling is something weshould be looking at.’

WHATS HOT OR NOT

This is the time of the year whengreen keepers carry out their autumnmaintenance and hollow tining, usingvast amounts of sand so we end upploughing through ‘Yellows’ ratherthan putting on ‘Greens’.

It’s also when green keepers fertiliseparts of the course and the amusingwarning notices appear remindingmembers ‘Not to Lick their Balls’.

Personally, I’ve never felt the urge to giveany of my balls a ‘go faster’ lick, which isthe misguided theory behind the action. For a start, my wayward balls see far toomuch evidence of bunnies and vermin onthe course and secondly I’d prefer tomaintain the health of my liver for morecivilised pleasures such as visiting the19th hole, rather than exposing it topoison from herbicides, pesticides andfertilizers and end up with ‘Golf BallLiver’. Yes, this really is a diseaserecognised by the medical profession!

Now, I’m aware Golf Clubs these days tryto use more natural products to feed thecourse but I was once stuck for hours in atraffic jam behind a tanker full of effluentfertilizer. The lorry displayed a big noticeon the back stating it was non-hazardousbut my bored brain definitely came to the

conclusion that just because something’snatural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Continuing on the subject of golf balls, many golfers, including professionals, feelthe need to shout at their ball, hoping thepower of their voice will telepathicallyguide it to their desired destination, ratherlike steering a car.

A friend of mine was once playing a fewholes with her newly trained Jack Russelldog secured to her trolley by a lead.

At one point she struck the ball really wellbut soon realised it was heading straightthrough the green and off the other side.Caught up in the emotion of the moment, she automatically shouted “sit…. sit….sit” but whereas the ball completelyignored her requests to sit on the green, her dog on the other hand obediently satdown by the trolley, looking up at her inutter puzzlement as to why she keptshouting commands at him.

Mind you, as someone recently pointedout to me, it’s no use shouting at your ballanyway as they always chop their ears offat the factory.

THE VALE RESORTCELEBRATES 20THANNIVERSARY OFFLAGSHIP GOLF COURSEThe Vale Resort celebrated the 20thanniversary of its first championship golfcourse, The Lake Course, in October.

Unveiled in 1994, the 18-hole course has beenplayed by more than 70,000 golfers in 20years including professional players such asWales’s Bradley Dredge, Ian Woosnam as wellas world-famous stars such as Gareth Bale, SirAlex Ferguson and Bernard Gallagher.

The par-72 course has hosted fourprofessional tournaments in the last 20 years, including Welsh professional championshipsand European Challenge Tour events.

Aptly named, the course is dominated withwater on 12 of its holes, including theimpressive 20-acre lake running along the14th hole. And the course’s signature hole,The Island Green, is ranked as one of theWales’ top par 4 golf holes.

Clive Coombs, golf operations manager atthe Vale Resort, said: “The Lake Course wasthe resort’s first golf course and certainly setthe benchmark of the high-standard of golffacilities at the Vale Resort.

“Over the last 20 years, the course hasn’tchanged much, but it has certainly matured. There were more than 20,000 trees plantedwhen the course opened, which were no morethan 1ft high.

“The Lake Course now boasts impressivewooded areas, with some of our treesreaching more than 40ft in height, offering asanctuary for wildlife including kites andhawkes. Coupled with a mixture of wide andnarrow fairways and challenging waterobstacles, the course attracts thousands ofgolfers every year to the resort.”

As part of the anniversary celebrations, theVale Resort was offering reduced green fees,20% off shoes and clothing at resort’s ProShop and £20 a buggy per round of golfthroughout October. And new members couldalso enjoy their first six months golfmembership for £200 if taken during theanniversary month.

Mr Coombs added: “The 20th anniversary of The Lake Course is a milestone; therearen’t many golf clubs in Wales that havesuch an impressive history and we’re invitinggolfers, past and present, to celebrate withus this October.”

Players of the resort’s two championshipwinning golf courses, The Lake Course andthe Wales National, can now access 3Dflyover technology to watch the journey to thegreen through aerial shots of each hole, offering insight on how the course should bebest played, before teeing off. Golfers canalso download the Vale Resort’s bespoke golfapp, which acts as a 3D-GPS distance deviceto help players improve their game.

The building is impressive as you approach, but with the instinct of a first classconcierge, Michael appears with a smile, andsoftens the impact instantly. Leaving ourluggage in his capable hands, we set off forthe golf course, the focus of attention for the afternoon.

A short drive along the road, with a separateentrance is the golf club, a total contrast tothe traditional buildings of the hotel, this isthe ultra modern clubhouse designed for thepurpose of comfort and convenience for theplayers, which it does very well. With plentyof time, we sampled the lunch menu, enjoying the views over the putting greenand driving range. In prime location adjacentto the entrance is a first class professional’sshop, stocked with a full range of equipmentand clothing, Dan Hacker is the Director ofGolf, with his team he provides the totalservice for visiting golfers and membersalike. Accustomed to organising corporateand society days, his team ensure thatvisitors enjoy a trouble free and value formoney golf outing.

So to the course, and without question Iwould recommend a buggy, if like me youare past the flush of youth, for it is a hillycourse with some walking between tees.Fine for the active but take heed if not. Thisis a classic parkland course, enhanced bywater hazards, subtly placed bunkering, and

first class greens. The opening holes havegenerous fairways, with some fascinatingdoglegs, that means thinking is moreimportant than length from the tee.Evidenced at both the 4th and 5th holes, aravine and a severe dogleg need to beconquered, and the 6th, a sporty par threeencircled by bunkers. The 8th provides thefirst view of the lake, and also the rearfaçade of the hotel, a series of views worthspending time to savour.

The back nine opens with a few opportunitiesto enhance the scorecard, after enjoying thevista across the countryside from the 10thtee. The closing holes are simply delightful, from the 16th to the last, each offering adifferent challenge. Along the northern sideof the lake, up to the spectacular waterfeatures and Italian Gardens at the rear ofthe hotel. Then the signature hole is the17th, a drive over the ornamental lake, with acarry in excess of 180 yards, before theapproach to an elevated green. Your roundsends with a birdie chance, and a fittingreward to an enjoyable round. Visiting golfers

are always welcome, you do not have to be amember or resident in the hotel; Green feesstart at £40 per round depending on whenyou wish to play, and there are excellentsociety and corporate packages.

The original estate has long been connectedwith Shakespeare and his heirs, including hisdaughter Suzanna, and it passed througheminent hands until it was purchased byMark Phillips, a Manchester businessman, who rebuilt the house in Jacobean style in1845, designed by Henry C Clutton.

The construction took four years and isconstructed as a Calendar House, whichmeans that it has seven entrances, (days ofthe week) fifty two chimneys (weeks of theyear) twelve fireplaces (months) and 365windows, one for each day. This infuses luckand prosperity for all who stay in the house. Iwill patiently await my turn for good fortune. The obelisk which stands sentry like on thehill overseeing the estate was built to thememory of Mark Phillips MP.

So to the hotel, which has 78 rooms ofvarious kind, a superbly equipped spa, forrelaxing after the excesses of the golfcourse, all contributing to the total packageof comfort and relaxation for the discerningclient. We enjoyed the luxury of a suiteoverlooking the fabulous Italian gardens andthe golf course, before dining in the

restaurant where the food and service weretruly first class, and even being told of thechange in the menu felt like a privilege.

Add a fine wine list and you have all theingredients for a perfect conclusion to a mostsatisfying day. The Welcombe Hotel Spa & GolfClub is the ideal location for a relaxinggetaway, or for a conference or corporateevent, with not only a comprehensive range offacilities onsite, but also a plethora of otherattractions in the town and surrounding area.

The Shakespeare theatre, castles, history, countryside and a variety of attractions in thetown itself, or a river cruise to sample theRiver Avon. Luxury in a refined but relaxedenvironment, and staff patently happy toprovide the service that goes with it.

The team at the hotel will be happy toprovide any information about visits orreservations, and our inspection of theChristmas and New Year Festivities brochureleft us with plans to make a return, muchsooner than we had originally intended.

Stratford is renowned the world over as thebirthplace of William Shakespeare, in factthe town is an incredible magnet to touristsof every kind. Shakespeare Country aboundswith attractions, and it is no surprise thatthere is a requirement for suitable

accommodation to satisfy that need. Situated centrally in thecountry, Warwickshire is very accessible, so the ideal locationfor a visit, and we found the perfect solution.

With “Clubs in the Boot” we headed for the Menzies WelcombeHotel Spa & Golf Club, and the name could not have been moreappropriate. Just a short distance outside the town, on the WarwickRoad, and easy to find, a drive up the leafy lane through the golfcourse, and the welcome mat is out, excuse the pun.

Gloria Old CourseDisputably considered to be the best course this 18 holes isa Par 72 with a very respectable distance of 6,900 yardsoff the back tees, the Championship Old Course has beenhost to several European Tour Events becoming a firmfavourite with golfers since it opened in 1997. Thesurroundings are quite stunning with swathes of Pine treesand 7 fresh water lakes and the ever dominant TaurusMountains as a constant back drop.

There are not so many bunkers as some of the other Belekcourses but those that are there are well positioned andseem to have magnetic qualities every time my ball wentanywhere near. The fairways are always in great conditionbut the first cut can be quite demanding, the lush Bermudagrass can soon snag your club so the philosophy is quitesimple keep your ball on the fairway! On all of the 45 holes at Gloria the greens are just superb, some say a little on the fast side but in my opinion justperfect, I can always find slow greens back in the UK.

Gloria New CourseConstruction on the Gloria New Course, also 18 hole Par72, started in December 2004, to be inaugurated inNovember 2005. The terrain is almost identical to that ofits big sister the Old Course, but many differences soonbecome apparent, the fairways are wider and the courseis much shorter, having said that the PGA were happy touse the Gloria New Course to host the European Seniors

Tour Classic in 2007. Again the fairways are lined withPine trees and 4 lakes regularly come into play, GloriaNew Course is ideal for holiday golf, not too demandingbut still a great challenge especially off the back tees. The signature hole is the wonderful 17th, modelled onthe 17th at Sawgrass, a picturesque par 3 that will stickin your memory for a good or bad reason that only youand your chosen golf club will determine.

Gloria Verde CourseThe Verde Course is a very demanding 9 hole challenge ofgolf, being a Par 35 with a distance of just over 3,000yards, Verde opened in 2001 with the intention of being apractice facility but soon gained a deserved reputation ofbeing one of the best 9 hole courses in Europe. It is worthnoting that at certain times players without handicaps areallowed and encouraged to use this facility to gain theexperience needed to progress to full handicap status.

It is easy to understand why golfers who stay at either ofthe 3 Gloria Hotels tend to play local, why travel off sitewith 45 wonderful holes of golf on your door step. Gloria Golf Resort Hotel has always been very popularwith the golfers who travel to Belek, so much so theSungolf competition weeks will be once again held therein February and March 2015. ELAINE JOINS DORSET’S GOLF DRIVE

Rory relishesAugusta hypeRORY McIlroy says he is looking forwardto embracing the pressure when he bidsto complete a career Grand Slam at nextyear’s Masters at Augusta.

The Ulsterman’s Open triumph at Hoylakemarked the third leg of the career milestone, and he scooped up a second USPGA titlethree weeks later.

‘I know there is going to be a lot of hypegoing into Augusta,’ McIlroy told BBC SportNorthern Ireland.

‘The spotlight will be firmly focused on mebut I won’t mind. I’ll embrace it.’

Speaking after opening a new support centrefor children with cancer in County Down,McIlroy said he has thought about howvictory in April would set him up for anattempt at winning four successive Majors atthe U.S. Open two months later.

TWO Englishmen will be lining up this month alongside some of the world’s biggesthitters of a golf ball in the 2014 European Long Drive Championship.

World long driving star in 2010 Joe Miller, who recently joined Brocket Hall’s ambassadorialteam, entertaining corporate clients and members, will be attempting to out-drive othercontenders such as fellow Brits John McSloy of Scotland and England’s Scott Beaven.

The long hitters get set to soar

The monster albatross aceMORE than 4,000golfers have so farreceived anexclusive watchfor holing an aceduring a clubcompetition, butBuncrana’s Kyle

Mccarron has claimed the longest hole-in-one to date - on a monster 360-yardpar-four.

Big-hitter McCarron, 18, from Buncrana,Donegal, accomplished the astonishing featwith his driver on the second hole at his club,

North West, while playing for the EamonMacManus President’s Prize. The scratchgolfer ought to have perfect timing both onand off the golf course after being rewardedwith membership of the exclusive BOSSWatches H1 Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

McCarron’s albatross - the Americans call it a double-eagle - also gave him his veryfirst ace.

He said: ‘This is my first hole-in-one and I’mvery pleased. I have been playing golf for sixyears and I practise every day.’

McCarron is currently attending MaynoothUniversity College in Kildare after beinghonoured with the Paddy Harrington GolfScholarship and his golfing diligence ispaying off as he follows the footsteps of RoryMcIlroy, recently being crowned the UlsterYouth Golf champion.

The BOSS cheme is open to any golferwhose club uses HowDidiDo - a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers - and anybody playing in official club competitions will be eligible. Currently, more than 1,800 clubs use the website.

. . .and farmerAndrew reaps3 in a fortnightA FARMER from Rotherham haslaid claim to being the luckiestgolfer in Britain after scoring threeholes-in-one - in just 15 days.

Andrew Walker achieved two of theaces on a huge hole at his homecourse, Wath GC - its feared 248-yard, par-four sixth. As his most recentwas in an official club competition, thethree-handicapper was rewarded witha specially-commissioned,commemorative BOSS timepiece.

Walker, 54, scored hisfirst ace on the par-four sixth, with a 22-degree rescue club, and followed up withhis second a weeklater, on the 137-yard,par-three third, usinga pitching wedge. He went on to complete his hat-trickwhen he returned to the sixth, againusing his trusty rescue.

Walker’s amazing triple feat was allthe more remarkable as the self-employed farmer had never beforerecorded a hole-in-one.

He said: ‘I’ve been playing golfseriously for about 10 years. I playedcricket for 30 years on the first teamof my village, but was told I was tooold. Since I had no interest in playingon the second team, someonesuggested I take up golf, so I did’There’s no secret. I just go for it.’

AND did it last?

That was the question I left you withwhen I’d just discovered every golfer’sdream – the perfect club.

This one, if you remember, was an Adamsfour hybrid. I’d got very excited because onthe driving range it picked up the ballcleanly, hit it straight, and delivered it about170 yards down the fairway.

I’ve had it for four weeks now. Did it last?Well, yes. And no. It’s more consistent thanmy three-wood, without the distance. It hitsit further than my five-wood, but isn’t quiteso reliable.

Which means that I’m still in the state ofterminal uncertainty which fogs the mindsof most senior golfers.

All of which I rather forgot when my palBiggles tried to murder me. Now I knowgolf is a frustrating game, but I do thinkthat’s taking it a bit far.

Biggles, an Adams convert, was anxious totry out a bagful of them he’d bought atEastern Road, Portsmouth, even though itwas raining heavily. Rather reluctantly, Iwent with him.

Halfway down the second fairway, the raingot worse. I put my clubs away and offeredto hold the umbrella over him.

That was when I made the near-fatalmistake. I took up my position just behindhis left shoulder.

Where does a golf club go after it hasstruck the ball?

That’s right. Straight over the left shoulder.

That’s where it went, and, I might say, atsome speed. It clocked me on my rain-soaked baseball cap.

Now I’m a smallish chap so didn’t go down,as they say, like a felled oak. I was more ofa stamped daffodil.

‘Good God!’ said Biggles, dropping hisclub. ‘Are you okay?’

To be honest, I wasn’t okay, not for a

minute or two. Then he helped me to myfeet and I staggered about a bit.

‘Let’s get you back to the clubhouse,’ hesaid, sounding very worried.

I realized why when I looked in the mirror inthe gents. My face was streaked withcrimson where the mingled blood andpoured down my face.

Biggles wanted to run me to the local A andE but I mopped up the blood and headedinstead to the doctors’ surgery at Midhurst.

The doctor took one look at the lacerationon my hairline and looked at his watch.

It was just after mid-day. ‘We normally seethese around 2am,’ he said, ‘caused by abottle. What caused this one?’

Lying there on the bed, head reeling, I gavehim a full and honest answer: ‘It was anAdams hybrid, a three, I think, with aseniors’ graphite shaft.’

I paused as I felt the stitches going in. ‘I’msorry, but I can’t tell you the loft.’

If you see a bloodstained baseball cap one-bay, you’ll know where it came from.

Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . .

How my golf buddietried to murder me

Like many young golfers starting out Ithought I would end up beating theWorld. I was a member of The EuropeanTour for three years back in the late 70sand early 80s and shot a few goodrounds, but unfortunately my gamedidn’t measure up. Since then, in asincere effort to help golfers I have spentmy time trying to improve my coachingskills and my understanding ofeverything to do with golf.

Coaching golf is certainly varied, one minuteyou have in front of you a person who ispleased to get the ball off the ground andsomewhat in the direction of the target andthe next, an expert wanting to tighten hisgame a little. Factor in that everybody isdifferent and have different learning styles. Some golfers will just go for it and dowhatever it takes to improve, while others aremore cautious and don’t want to do anythingthat feels a bit uncomfortable. You can seethat as a coach you have to be very flexible aswell as a bit of a psychologist in order to givesomebody what they want.

As a coach one is always trying to conveyfeelings. Showing somebody a particular wayof standing or swinging is ok but unless theycan practice the corrected movementrepetitiously and correctly it is going to bevery difficult for them to significantly improve. Some years ago I started using several piecesof great technology as teaching aids that helppupils to do just that.

One of them is a K Vest, the vest has a sensorplaced on the hips, torso and left wrist. With itI can measure the movement of the hips andtorso in 3D, as well as their rotational speedsthroughout the swing. This is very valuableinformation when it comes to making a swingmotion more efficient and powerful. Whatmakes the K Vest great is that it has apractice mode. While wearing the vestthe golfer can swing into a position orthrough a series of positions and hear anaudible tone when the ideal position isattained. This process can be repeateduntil the feeling is automatic. This typeof learning is ideal for experts andnovices alike.

Different swing types may need differenttraining. For instance, a golfer who has a oneplane type action, the likes of Justin Rose orHunter Mahan, may be standing up in thedownswing, which is causing his club to comeway from the inside and he is hooking badly.

Maintaining his angles would help remove hishook because the club would come intoimpact less from the inside. Body anglesduring the swing are largely controlled by theforward and backward movement of thepelvis. This movement can easily be trainedwith the K Vest. The combinations areendless, someone with a two plane typeaction, the likes of Angel Cabrera or TomWatson, who has the spine leaning towardsthe target at the top of the backswing caneasily be corrected – most golfers wholeaning the spine towards the target on thebackswing, reverse the process on thedownswing. The majority will slice but othersmay hit a big hook.

Some golfers might not need or want to go onthe K Vest, after all everybody is different. Myother half Nikki, loves it, mainly because shehad the round of her life after practicing on it!!

Pictured is Emma Allen who had a sparklingseason this year and is now a member of theEnglish Girls Squad. Emma falls into the “I’lldo whatever it takes” category. In the pictureEmma was improving her turn and hipposition on the K Vest. More about someother equipment next month!

If you need any help with any department ofyour game, please don't hesitate to contactme either through my website: www.mbtourcoach.comor by telephone M: 07787 887578.

The width of your stance at address issuper important when it comes to yourability to make a full golf swing. This is aquick tip on how far apart your feet shouldbe when it comes to a full shot.

So many golfers I teach have their feet withertoo far apart or too close together… this resultsin all sorts of problems in the full swing.

Too far apart and you will be giving away a goodamount of mobility in your full swing. Sochances are you won’t get a full shoulder turnunless you are made of elastic like Mr McIlroy. The tour players get an incredible X factorwhere they can coil their upper half up against afairly solid and wide base. This is down to hoursof gym work so don’t try and copy!! If you aretoo wide then because your shoulders can't turnproperly you will find your arms get too involvedand this will lead to a collapse in the left arm (inright handed players) in an attempt to completethe swing. On the other side of the coin if youstand with your feet too close together thenchances are you will move about too much. Theissues this causes with stability mean thechance of getting the middle of the clubfaceback to the ball consistently is greatly reduced.

Width of stance is often something golfers arejust not aware of themselves. Check in a mirrorat home by setting up to a ball facing the mirrorwithout looking at your reflection. Then once youare comfortable glance up and see what youlook like. This is an ideal chance to check yourball position too. Alternatively get someone tovideo your set up and swing from face on andthis will allow you to see for yourself what isgoing on.

The best advice I can give is to build a specificsequence of movements into your pre-shotroutine. Set up to the ball with your feet togetherand the ball opposite the very middle of your feet. Then take your feet apart to approximatelyshoulder width (from the inside of your heels). Ifyou are someone who sets up to the ball withyour feet far too wide then your correct stancewill feel very narrow, and vice versa. If you usuallyadopt a narrow stance then a correct width withyour feet will feel like you are doing the splits. It isworth checking this in a mirror or have it videoedas it will put your mind at ease. Then justremember how exaggerated the correct stancefeels and recreate that on the course.

There are occasions when a more unorthodoxstance comes in handy. If you are faced with anawkward lie a wider stance will help youbalance on a severe slope. This applies whenyou are in a seriously precarious position in a

bunker. I’m sure you’ve all seen the players ontour with really wide set-ups when they have tostand with one leg in a bunker and one outsideit. It all helps them to balance but will hindertheir mobility.

I tend to give some of the older players I teach anarrower stance as this offers increasedmobility as their motion gets limited due to ageor in some cases back injury. Try it if you are agolfer who has struggled to get more shoulderturn as a result of either reason. Just be awarethat less effort is required if you are to maintainyour balance. If you try and bash the ball intothe next millennium from a narrow stance you’llend up on your derriere!

It is important to be aware of your width ofstance as some of the faults in your swing maylie here! Good luck and happy practicingthrough the winter. I am about to go onmaternity leave as Baby D number 2 is due onJan 6th. I’ll be back teaching in June.
