What’s YOUR Story of Gratitude?

Rev. David Fujimoto

Someone once said, “To know your church, is to know its stories of it’s members.” Often times, I find myself in and about the temple or outside the temple walls spending time with or bumping in to our members. I always enjoy hearing their stories. It’s giving me much to be grateful for as they share their stories. Many stories I hear about how grateful they are for the temple, and what it has done for them. It truly brings the idea that the temple is a living and breathing organism to life. Often we forget that, and how the temple is there to support and nurture it’s members. As we start the Holiday Season, we should mindfully reflect on what is YOUR story of gratitude. As we live each day, our story is formed in how we live each day. The idea of gratitude is illuminated in temple and nurtured at home and in life. I’d like to share with you a brief moment in my recent vacation. This occurred recently during my recent vacation with my family to Disneyland. The first time I went to Disneyland was over 30 years ago with my parents. This past June, I was able to go again, this time, with my own family. Being able to watch the young ones made me reflect on days gone by, however two things that happened on this trip made it memorable. First, sitting outside of the Star Trader shop, while Darth Vader and his minions passed back and forth, and spending time with my wife's grandmother, while waiting for the others to go through the Astro Blaster ride was really awesome. Now that we moved, I really don't have a chance to visit with her or talk story with her too often, so it was a great time to "catch up" and just enjoy each other's company. Later that evening, we wanted to catch the "Together Forever" show. At first, we were stuck by the by Frontierland en-trance, but slowly moved our way to the front of the castle. I noticed a man next to us kind of acting weird, so I kind of positioned myself in between him and my family, so as to keep them safe. Throughout the show, I kept a side eye. When the show ended, and the crowd started to run off to the Fantasmic show, the man went on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend. That was crazy! My family had to settle me down, because I was yelling "Wow!!!! Hoooooo!!" He wasn't acting weird, he was just SUPER NERVOUS!!!! After all was said and done, I shook his hand and congratulated him. I asked him if he wanted me to take a picture, and so we took several. After in parting, he told me "Hey, I wanted to thank you for being a part of this special moment!" That kind of caught me off guard. I replied back, "Hey man, that was alllllll you! Too bad you didn't have your paper work, I could have married you right here, right now!" They both laughed, and we parted ways. I didn’t physically receive anything, no one did anything for me, it was just this moment, thins one moment in time that will never ever happen again. This moment was shared with others as they to created their own moments. However, this story is one of gratitude for just what was around me. For many growing up during the war, this feeling of gratitude for the moment, is what got them though all the pain and suffering they were going though. Now it’s our turn to develop and nurture our story, and share it with others in the hopes that we aspire others to develop their story of gratitude.

Rev. David Fujimoto

Aloha Mililani Hongwanji Ohana and Friends!

Life just keeps getting better! So many firsts are happening at Mililani! The 1st Joint

Conference of Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii in September and the planning committee is

recommending a repeat every 4 years! First name plate at the National Cemetery of

the Pacific at Punchbowl Columbarium with the inscription “NAMO AMIDA BUTSU”!

First “Patch of Madness and pumpkin carving extravaganza held at Waipahu

Hongwanji was a big success with 38 fun loving participants and 8 from Mililani! Ac-

tually, Evan Watarida is a great Bingo Caller! As I can recall, your guest speaker in

September who helped us celebrate Peace Day, was former Mililani Hongwanji Jr YBA member and the 2017 Cherry

Blossom Queen, Ms. Heather Omori. That’s a first! She is now a teacher at the Daniel K. Inouye Elem. School on

Schofield, and strives to teach her students about the importance of supporting our military who are fighting for

our freedom and pay gratitude for the Gold Star families who are left behind after their loved ones passed away

while serving in active duty.

On Sunday, October 21, I represented Mililani Hongwanji at the 110th Anniversary of Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission

Service, Luncheon and Affirmation Service for our own Mililani member, Ms. Donna Gishitomi. She was deeply

moved by Bishop Eric Matsumoto’s message too! Her Buddhist Name is “Myo Ro”, a radiant light, brightly shining

to guide our Sangha to the Pure Land.

Finally, it’s a busy November, on Sunday, Nov. 11th, it’s Karaoke Time at Pearl City Hongwanji!

Please come for fun and songs, and bring a potluck item.

Please walk with us on Monday, Nov. 12th in the 72nd Wahiawa Lions Veterans Day Parade, along with Wahiawa

Hongwanji and many other Hongwanji members who want to honor our Veterans. Sign-up sheet on the bulletin

board or call or email me. “Mahalo Veterans!” We also need you at our last 2018 Visitation to Wahiawa Hospital

Nursing and Rehab Center on Tuesday, Nov. 13th, 10:00-11:00 AM, and fellowship and lunch to follow. Just

come! Where shall we go for lunch? We share a dharma message with the patients, talk story, and have a sing-

along to enjoy the magic of music! Nice visit! Nov. 18th, Sunday, 12:00 - 2:00 PM, the Oahu Lay Association is

meeting at Mililani, and you are welcome to attend, learn what’s happening, ask questions, propose changes,

plan for the future. One resolution proceeding to the Legislative Assembly in 2019, is

Clarifying the Roles and Responsibilities of all Honpa Hongwanji Mission Ministers,

statewide, and all temples will have clear guidelines.

While we have conscientiously tried to “Embrace Change: Awareness

(Seek Opportunities), New Vision (Create Engagement) , Action (Open

Communication), and Harmony (Accept Differences), for 4 years, our slo-

gan and guide for 2019 is Embrace Change: Transformation (Walk in

Peace). I look forward to walking in peace with our Mililani Hongwanji

Ohana!

Namo Amida Butsu! We are always very grateful for your support and interest in

spreading the dharma! In gassho.

BWA 40th Anniversary Luncheon

Autumn is upon us and the holidays are right around the corner! We began the month of October with our annual Dharma School/Jr. YBA canned goods drive on October 7th. Thanks to the generosity of our Sangha, we donated 184 pounds and cash donations to the Hawaii Foodbank! Also on that day, our students interviewed Keirokai hon-orees Dennis Kawamoto and Karl Kakehi. We all enjoyed asking our questions and hearing their many fun and in-teresting stories about their lives. On October 21st, we finished up our recycled onenju-making activity that we started in September. We now have the coolest and most unique onenju’s around! Also in observance of Clergy Appreciation Day, our students pre-sented Rev. Fujimoto with a lei and a DVD full of pictures throughout his time at our temple. We are truly grateful for the support and guidance he provides our Dharma School students and teachers. And thank you to Danny Noia for his great job as a Junior Minister’s Assistant alongside Rev. Fujimoto at the Octo-ber 21st service. Here’s what we have planned for our Dharma School lessons/activities for November:

November 4th Keirokai Recognition Service: Students will participate in an Intergenerational activity with Keirokai members

November 18th Eitaikyo / Thankful Turkey Activity

November 25th Movie Sunday: “Christopher Robin” (starts at 9am in the Ed bldg.)

Please feel free to see Dharma School Co-Directors Roger Babcock or Claire Doi or any of the Dharma School staff if you have any questions or need more info about our activities.

Memorial Services Mililani Hongwanji conducts memorial services in hon-or of those who have passed away. The Shotsuki Memorial Ser-vice is a general memorial service which are held monthly to remember members and friends who passed away during the month in which the memorial service is held. These services are held primarily for those individuals that do not fall in the yearly service interval cycle. Nenki Hoyo Memorial Services are memorial services which are held separate from the monthly memorial services in yearly intervals. These separate private services can be held before, on or after the memorial dates. It is a personal oppor-tunity to gather as a family to encounter and listen to the Bud-dha Dharma and remember your family members and friends who have passed on and through these services, we are able to

reflect on all that we have received from them in our daily lives. It also

gives families the opportunity to reconnect with members they otherwise would not see during the course of the year.
