M16 BASE 10 CONSTRUCTION Place value and what a number could physically look like.

In week two M16 began learning about; number, place value and how those numbers were represented using base 10 blocks. We looked at ones, tens and hundreds. (Cube, long, flats) In the beginning, we did not quite see the relevance of the base 10 blocks however, we soon realised the pattern of the numbers and the shape they made; cube, long, flat repeated over and over again. With this in mind, the class, were given the task to construct the next three numbers in the base 10 sequence using only newspaper, a metre ruler and masking tape.

We began by making the long shape, which would contain 10,000 ones, then the flat shape that would be equivalent to 100,000 ones and finally the cube that was equivalent to 1,000,000 ones. The class worked as a team to construct the shapes. We have worked out that the next shape in the sequence would be 10 metres long, the flat would be half the size of the assembly here today and the cube would extend nearly to the roof. We thought about building them however; we did not have enough newspaper…maybe next term. Lessons we learnt during this activity… co-operation, teamwork, resilience, persistence and FUN

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS – WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help. The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please fill in the tear off section below and return it to the

Front office. Yes, I would like to help with School Banking! Name: _____________________________________ Phone: _____________________________________ Email: ______________________________________ Availability: __________________________________

GET INVOLVED IN THE CBA SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAM.

Modbury West Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards. Once your child has made 10 deposits at the school then they can claim for a reward. This can be done with the reward Coupons.

The rewards available during 2018 are: Term 1

1. Twister Power Handball 2. Secret Scratch Pad

Term 2 3. Sparkle Glitter Pens 4. Glow Light

Term 3 5. Mighty Boom Handball 6. Heat Reactor Pencils

Term 4 7. Slushie Maker Cup 8. Zoom Flying Disc

Getting involved in School Banking is easy! All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2. In branch Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet. Also if you have a younger sibling that has not started school yet or older child at high school they can also bank with us, as long as they open an account, they just need to put their deposit book in the class grey satchel of the child currently at Modbury West Primary School. School Banking day is Tuesday, if you are wanting to bank then you can place your deposit folder into the class grey satchel, then this is brought to the office.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please leave a note at the front office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
