A TERM 2 WEEK 7 12 JUNE 2020 Dear Parents and Caregivers After the Phase 3 announcements by the Premier of WA, Lathlain Primary School is close to returning back to normal. Many activities that were restricted are now able to be re-introduced. The activities that have been reinstated are, sports training, interschool activities, canteen, vac swim, camps, work placements, assemblies, P&C and School Council meetings, school banking and third party visitors being able to access the school grounds. The requirement for all these activities is that there must be less than 100 people in an indoor area and 300 people in an outdoor area. Cleaning requirements will remain the same and we will continue to employ the extra cleaner to clean and disinfect high-contact surfaces that are frequently used by students and/or staff. Playgrounds and play equipment will be cleaned daily. On Tuesday, we had our first physical assembly where students and parents of the students who were performing assembled in the undercover area. Chairs for parents were socially distanced, the school leaders introduced the class and the students from Room 11 performed a wonderful song called, ‘We are the World’. We will continue to perform our classroom assemblies in this manner for the time being. Thank you to Mrs Khanna and her class for presenting a great item. The new demountable is now complete and students from Room 20 will take possession next week. An interactive TV will be installed with all the required data cabling and connections fully completed. Mrs Holle will be conducting music in the Music room. Next Wednesday, June 17, the School Council Chair, Mr Mark Wallace and I will be presenting our school narrative to a panel of three Independent Public School (IPS) principals. This narrative addresses why Lathlain Primary School should become an IPS school. The three areas we are required to address are: 1. The capacity for Lathlain Primary School to assume greater responsibility; 2. The level of local support, including the broader community and 3. The potential benefits to students and the broader school community. We have received assistance from an IPS principal, Ms Jennifer Hirsch, the principal of Yokine Primary school. We will be notified later in the year if we have been successful. On Sunday June 7, I had the privilege of watching last year’s Year 6 students, Andy L, Gabby A, Ella V, Joshua V & Yuvan M participate in a presentation and discussion with judges from the First Lego League Robotics Virtual Competition. TERM 2 WEEK 7 12 JUNE 2020

Dear Parents and Caregivers

After the Phase 3 announcements by the Premier of WA, Lathlain Primary School is close to returning back to normal.

The three areas we are required to address are:

1. The capacity for Lathlain Primary School to assume greater responsibility;

2. The level of local support, including the broader community and 3. The potential benefits to students and the broader school

community.

The students presented their hydrobike design to judges in Sydney, Denmark and Google headquarters in California. The students not only presented their design and its use in a PowerPoint presentation but were required to answer questions from the judges, which they answered extremely well.

The students were also required to present their robot design and show their robot perform a variety of tasks. I would like to thank Ms Ionascu, Mr Kendrew and Mr Vuckovic for assisting the students with their preparation and presentation and congratulate the students on an extremely high quality presentation.

A special thank you to Mrs Sara Daly for all her hard work with the Scholastic Book Club. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, it has been difficult organising and distributing books to classes but all the books were efficiently distributed to all the students. An amazing amount has been raised and the school received $600 to spend on new books for our library. Thank you Sara and to everyone who purchased books.

In term swimming lessons for Pre-Primary to Year 2 have been cancelled, as lessons will not be recommencing until Term 3. I am hoping we can access swimming in Term 4. I will keep you updated.

Reports will be issued on Monday 29 June, if you require two copies please advise the office.

Finally thank you to all the parents and care givers who are abiding by the regulations relating to entering the classroom and leaving the school grounds soon after picking up their children. Thank you for your support.

Kind regards Ian Bersan A/Principal

LEGENDARY LEGO LEAGUE

FLL Robotics Virtual Invitational Competition June 2020

The Legendary Lego League Team competed against the best of the best last Sunday.

The team members are a great example of hard work and persistence. They went up against students aged 10 years to 16 years and veteran members. Although they did not receive an award this time around we are all truly proud of their achievements and work ethics. It is clear that these students will be successful in whatever they chose to do. We will always remember them as Champions (Regional) and 2nd Champions (National); which elevated them towards the international spotlight.

LLL Current Team Members: Andy L, Gabby A, Ella V, Joshua V & Yuvan M.

P&C NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

Return to P&C activities

With COVID-19 restrictions easing we are working on reinstating some P&C activities across the school, including the Walk to School Breakfast and Artist in Resident Melissa McVee returning to work with our students on painting the doors next term.

Successful online participation in P&C meeting We successfully held our first meeting last night with parents logging in remotely from home to participate. The P&C will continue to use the Microsoft Teams platform to enable parents who are unable to attend meetings in person the ability to participate online. Parents can register their interest with our secretary to be invited to meetings through Microsoft Teams. Email [email protected] to register.

Applying for Restart Vic Park Grant for Bike Education

I met with Principal Ian Bersan to discuss how the P&C could best help the school after the past few months and the school is keen for us to apply for a Restart Vic Park Grant for a Bike Education program through Your Move https://yourmove.org.au/resources/bike-education/

If anyone has grant application skills and is interested in assisting please email me at [email protected]

Have you joined our Fathering Project Facebook group? With COVID-19 our Fathering Project has been unable to host any events, but as restrictions ease they will be back with a vengeance in Term 3. Want to be part of the group? Head to https://www.facebook.com/groups/533992130735916/

If you have an idea for an event the group could hold email Cirsten at [email protected]
