Workshop #1
Competing on Sustainability
Linda Coady
Chief Sustainability Officer
Linda Coady is Chief Sustainability Officer for Enbridge, a leading North American energy delivery
and infrastructure company. Prior to joining Enbridge in 2013, she was Vice-President of
Sustainability for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and Paralympic Games (VANOC) for 5 years. She is
also a former Vice-President of World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada), and a former Vice-
President of Weyerhaeuser Canada. In 2015 Linda was a member of the Climate Advisory Panel to
the Government of Alberta.
As noted in an August 2015 article in Canadian Business, Ms. Coady was a junior Vice President for
MacMillian Bloedel (later acquired by Weyerhaeuser) in the mid 1990’s, and was thrust into an epic
battle over Calyoquot Sound on Vancouver Island. More than 800 protestors were arrested in the
summer of 1993. Improbably, she brokered a détente with environmental groups and First Nations –
one that would later become a template for later peace treaties and help end two decades of unrest in
“The War of the Woods.” To this day, Canada’s forest industry goes about its business largely
without incident or interference from environmental NGO’s.
Her work has been recognized with awards from Canadian Business for Social Responsibility (CBSR),
the YWCA, and the Globe Foundation on Business and Environment.
Ms. Coady has consulted both locally and globally on sustainable development issues in the forestry,
mining, energy, and shipping industry as well as in the conservation movement and the sport sector.

at Ingersoll Rand (CEES), which supports all of the company’s strategic brands – Club Car,
Ingersoll Rand, Trane and Thermo King – and is responsible for forward-looking sustainability
initiatives. Since the CEES was formed in 2010, Ingersoll Rand has successfully met or exceeded its

world-class initiatives including the creation of an Ecowise product portfolio, personalized
employee engagement programs, and unique research on unmet needs in the green space. Tew
manages all sustainability-related public transparency, advocacy, reporting and goal setting
initiatives for the company.

Emerging Issues
Hello everyone. I’m the Global Sustainability Director for FMC Corporation. I’ve been in this
position for almost four years. We are currently in the process of publishing FMC’s sixth
Sustainability Report – Built for Progress – which underscores the importance of sustainability at
FMC and focuses on our key priorities: People, Products and Responsibility.
After graduating from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY in
1977 I immediately started working for FMC and have held several positions since that time in
research, development and the businesses. In the 1980’s I worked in the Biotechnology group
isolating natural product herbicides and insecticides from fungi. In the 1990’s I moved from
research into development where I was responsible for doing studies to support global product
registrations. In 2003 I joined our North America crop business as the manager of the
Registrations and Regulatory group and then in 2009 took the position as the Product
Stewardship Manager for FMC’s global Agricultural Solutions business ensuring that our
products are used safely and responsibly around the world.
I live outside of Philadelphia with my husband, Rick. We enjoy traveling, boating, skiing and
cooking (well, actually Rick enjoys cooking and I enjoy eating!). Our daughter, Jen, is married and
lives in northern Vermont where she works as a carpenter and has her own business making
furniture. Our son, Dan, is married, lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and son. Rick and I have
been married for 40 years and are going on a safari in Kenya and Tanzania this September to
celebrate!

Emerging Issues
Katherine Sierra
Non-Resident Fellow
Sierra’s research covers the international climate change architecture, with a specific focus on the
effectiveness of climate finance. Recent policy papers focus on Green Climate Fund and the ways that
international climate finance can catalyze private investment for low emission and climate resilient
development. She also focuses on sustainable infrastructure and green growth, contributing to G-20
discussions on infrastructure in Africa and on opportunities after the Arab spring.
As vice president for sustainable development, Sierra oversaw the Bank’s global environment,
infrastructure and agricultural activities and led its climate change strategy—including creation of the
$6.5 billion Climate Investment Funds. These funds leverage the private sector in the deployment of new
technologies and support changes in public investment profiles to support green development. Sierra
broadened the Bank’s climate change strategy to tackle adaptation and focus on agriculture, water, eco-
system and urban sectors and the impact on the least developed countries. She was the Bank’s
spokesperson on climate change, and represented it at the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change high level meetings and at the G-8 and G-20 on climate and environment issues. She is a
frequent speaker on the issues surrounding development and climate change.
As vice president, Sierra oversaw the World Development Reports on Climate Change (2010), Economic
Geography (2009), and Agriculture (2008). She was chair of the Consultative Group for International
Agriculture Research, and led the major reform of that institution which was approved in 2009. She has
served in various executive roles throughout the World Bank, including vice president for infrastructure
and for human resources. Ms. Sierra has considerable country experience in East Asia, including
managing the urban and environment program for China, and in Latin America, focusing in particular on
infrastructure.
Ms. Sierra is an independent Board Director for the Global Infrastructure Hub which was created by the
G-20 to advance public and private investment in infrastructure. Ms. Sierra serves on the advisory council
for the Ingersoll Rand Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. Sierra is a member of the Joint
Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis Advisory Council and has served on the National Research
Council, Policy and Global Affairs Division Oversight Committee. She chairs the Jury which awards the
World Environment Center’s Gold Medal for Corporate Sustainability Leadership.
Katherine Sierra is a nonresident senior fellow
in Global Economy and Development at
Brookings who focuses on climate change, with
