The Barossa Council community newsletter May 2019 T: 08 8563 8444 F: 08 8563 8461 E: [email protected] www.barossa.sa.gov.au The Barossa Council 43-51 Tanunda Road (PO Box 867) Nuriootpa SA 5355 Tanunda Library & Visitor's Centre Refurbishment It is with great excitement that the refurbishment of the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) and Tanunda Library has commenced, with thanks to Wine Australia for its support of this project through the Australian Government’s $50 million Export and Regional Wine Support Package. Under the expert direction of Studio S2 Architects and G-Force Building and Consulting, phase one of the project is currently in progress. The Library is now operating from the back section of the building with access to the library collection, holds, computers, Wi-Fi and Storytime still available, while work is taking place on the street fronted section, which will eventually become home to the VIC, including the opening of the entrance from Murray Street to improve access and visibility. The new-look VIC will include a Barossa video wall, with media in a range of languages, a region specific wine display, Barossa Maker’s table to facilitate direct interaction between visitors and local artisans, and an enhanced Barossa Made gift shop. The outdoor area will also receive an upgrade with Wi-Fi access and device charging facilities. In order to achieve this ambitious vision, it is anticipated as phase two of the project commences in July that there will be a three week closure period in which services will instead be offered from within the CWA Hall on the opposite side of the courtyard. Completion is expected by August. News in brief Successful Vintage Festival The Vintage Festival Lounge and Hub was well received by visitors and locals alike, with over 5000 flocking to this vibrant location throughout the Festival. An excellent example of what the Festival is all about: our community coming together, especially given the collaborative nature of this project which bought together the efforts of The Barossa Council, Tourism Barossa, Barossa Enterprises, Nuriootpa High School, Tinkers Shed and G-Think. Suicide Prevention Forum Update Sincere thanks to our community for their support in attending the Forum on Monday night at the Nuriootpa Soldier’s Memorial Hall. While conversations of this nature can be difficult, it is heartening to see the care our community has for one another, and together the change we can make is inspiring. Further information regarding the outcomes of the Forum and the creation of the Suicide Prevention Network for the region will be released soon. Tech Savvy Seniors Digital literacy skills are essential for anyone who wants to actively engage with family and friends across the country and the world. Over 60s are invited to join one of the small, friendly Tech Savvy Seniors training groups at the Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Lyndoch, Angaston or Mount Pleasant Libraries. The training is designed to make it easy to safely and confidently get connected and learn at your own pace. Learn skills in email, social media, using smartphones and tablets (including iPhone), online shopping, cyber safety, using apps, using your library online and cloud storage. Sessions are running throughout May and June, bookings are essential. To find out more, or to book, contact the Library on 8563 8440, email [email protected] or pop in to see our friendly staff. Additional courses will run later in the year. Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the SA Government and Telstra, delivered in partnership with the Libraries Board of SA. Local amateur photographers are encouraged to grab their camera and capture the hidden gems of the region which represent ‘a year of the Barossa’. Entry is open to all ages, with a variety of categories to showcase our rich food, wine, history, culture and landscapes, including a ‘Children’s Choice’ category especially for young photographers. A judging panel will select 13 images, with winners announced by 2 August, and the calendar launched for sale in September, alongside an exhibition at the Barossa Regional Gallery. Entries are now open online at www.barossa.sa.gov.au until 5 July.
