The Academy’s house system is named after the lighthouses

standing at various points along the south coast. Eddystone lighthouse

(below) was first constructed in 1696 by Henry Winstanley. The current

structure is its fourth incarnation, and continues to provide illumination,

aide navigation and safe harbour for mariners and wayfarers.

We, at the Bourne Academy aspire to do likewise for all our students.

The Bourne Academy is an all-ability, state-funded school

established by the sponsor Canford School.

The Governing Body and the Principal have responsibility

for leading and managing the Academy.

The Academy is bound by the same School Admissions Code,

SEN Code of Practice and exclusions guidance as all other

state-funded schools.

We see things not as they are, but as we are – Jewish proverb

AaWe aspire to become an inspiring learning centre for everyone who engages with us with all activities and experiences in the Academy focused on learning and personal growth. We want to make The Bourne Academy accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Together, we will succeed in developing this vision though our 6 priorities of :RAISING ASPIRATIONS OF STUDENTS, THEIR PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY, REDUCING ABSENCE, AND ENSURING THAT ALL STUDENTS ARE IN EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION OR TRAINING.

RAISING STANDARDS INCLUDING ATTAINMENT FOR ALL YEARS 7-13 AND STANDARDS IN ENGLISH AND MATHEMATICS.DEVELOPING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS WITH PARENTS/CARERS, BUSINESS AND THE LOCAL AND WIDER COMMUNITY.ENSURING INCLUSIVE LEARNING, NAMELY THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF LEARNING AND TEACHING, AND A RELEVANT AND PERSONALISED CURRICULUM FOR ALL STUDENTS.DEVELOPING A CULTURE OF RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHERE OUTSTANDING BEHAVIOUR ALLOWS ALL LEARNERS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS AND ALL MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY TREATING EACH OTHER WITH RESPECT.LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES BEING DISPLAYED THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMY BY STAFF AND STUDENTS.

The Bourne Academy’s central belief is that everyone

is a learner and everyone is a teacher.

The Bourne Academy and its sponsor Canford School believe that

all students should be empowered to achieve and aspire to the highest,

be treated with respect and treat others with respect, and enjoy the

Academy. We are therefore committed to providing a caring and safe

environment through the House System for all of our students so

they can learn in an atmosphere of mutual respect for each other’s

views and approaches to life.

SIXTH FORM CURRICULUM

By 2013 our sixth form courses will include MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS,

CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, PSYCHOLOGY, ENGLISH LITERATURE,

ENGINEERING, DESIGN and TECHNOLOGY – PRODUCT DESIGN,

MEDIA STUDIES, PHILOSOPHY, INTERACTIVE MEDIA, ICT,

ART and PHOTOGRAPHY, PERFORMING ARTS.

The whole curriculum content will be taught as Relevant Questions,

with students presenting what they have learnt to experts,

like local business people, and parents.

LEARNING IS ABOUT THINKING, NOT REMEMBERING

LEARNING IS A PROCESS OF DISCOVERY IN WHICH

THE LEARNER IS THE MAIN PERSON, NOT THE TEACHER

LEARNING IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT

There will be lots of opportunities to enter competitions e.g. CREST awards

for STEM projects, to be built into learning at all Key Stages. House points

to be awarded for successful project outcomes and for success in competitions.

Rewards will include students guesting on local company boards, and presenting

papers at international conferences hosted at the Academy.

The 9 Academy Competencies will be assessed through 6 ASPIRE DAYS

where students will spend the day working in teams on a project.

All subjects are mixed ability, except for mathematics which are setted.

English is mixed ability except for one group for students who have

literacy challenges.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

We hope that you choose to send you child to be educated at The Bourne Academy. We work closely with our partner primary schools, and also welcome children who join us from primary schools outside our catchment area. All Year 6 to Year 7 transfers are organised by the LA at Bournemouth Borough Council. The Bourne Academy takes part in the LA admissions arrangements for Secondary Schools.

It is essential that every student attends 100% of the time-every minute lost is learning lost! Examination performance is strongly linked with time spent in lessons. The Academy’s attendance policy is available on the website and from the Academy – it is very clear on our commitment to work with parents/carers on ensuring full attendance for all students.

We operate an equal opportunities policy for children with learning and physical disabilities who are afforded the same rights as all other children. Out SEN policy is reviewed annually. We have adopted a whole Academy approach to special educational needs which involves all the staff adhering to a model of good practice. We are committed to identifying and providing for the needs of all children in a wholly inclusive environment. Students’ progress is carefully monitored and we liaise with parents/carers, partner primary schools and the LA. All students are integrated as far as possible in the full range of Academy activities.

When a student is placed on the Inclusion Register, parents/carers are consulted and their approval sought. All Academy staff have access to the Inclusion Register and are informed as required for the effective support of new students.

All students who have Statements or are School Action Plus have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). These are negotiated with the student, A copy is given to the students and their parent/carer. A personalised curriculum is agreed as appropriate with each student and their parent/carer on an individual basis in order to give maximum access to the curriculum and to meet all needs.

We are a fully inclusive learning community and welcome students with a range of abilities. When a child with disabilities joins us, we liaise in advance with the previous school and other agencies to ensure their physical and emotional needs are catered for. All students are integrated as far as possible in the full range of Academy activities.
