What’s Happening in Second Grade……

The second graders are working hard in Reader’s Workshop. During their read aloud and in their own books, our second graders are really taking charge of their reading. We recently finished a unit where they got to know their characters better by paying attention to how they act, how they feel and what they say to other characters. As they are better understanding what is going on in their stories they are also practicing fluency. Our second graders are working on reading smoothly and with expression. Using what they have learned in Reading, our second grade writers have been working hard writing realistic fiction stories in Writer’s Workshop. Students were able to create made up characters that faced realistic problems and solutions. They used many of their favorite authors to help inspire new stories. We had a great time sharing our stories that included talk, action and feeling just like our favorite read alouds include! In math, second graders practiced using different strategies to learn how to add and subject larger numbers mentally. This is really helping them in their money chapter. Classes are having fun counting bills and coins and using this skill to solve real life word problems. If you have any spare change at home, be sure to practice counting coins. In Science, children are investigating solids and liquids. They have been introduced to the properties of both through read alouds and hands on experiments. The second graders have been asking a lot of questions! For example, how can a liquid turn into a solid or how does a solid turn into a liquid? Questioning is a big part of science. Our next part of this unit will focus on these questions that continue to arise! In Social Studies, our second graders enjoyed learning all about landforms and bodies of water around the world. We focused on exploring the United States and our own state, New Jersey. Students worked hard investigating different states and where able to share some interesting facts with one another.

ART During March Briarwood "Celebrates Dr. Seuss" for Youth Art

Month. All the bulletin boards throughout the school are covered with

murals the students drew and painted of different Dr. Seuss book

covers. I'm very proud of all my students who worked together to create

the exhibit!
