He is currently responsible for optimizing the planning and procurement pro-cess in the unique field of biotechnology. Prior to this role, he worked as a Supply Planner (February- August 2014) and as a Transportation Specialist (August 2014 – January 2015). His ex-

These organizations have been a tremen-dous platform for Justin by exposing him to indus-try best practices and providing him with a net-work of supply chain and operations experts.

The supply chain forum at Towson University
was really good. One industrial and One
academic speaker. By Rachea David
Speaker 1 = Alex Baxter, VP of Supply Chain Planning for Pepsico
Topic = Transforming the Pepsi Supply Chain
$66 billion company, 50% of revenue outside the US
Have a lot of capital investment (Trucks/fleet, bottling, etc)
Strategy has been buying brands and bot-tling companies- to become 1 large entity
Use Direct Source Delivery (DSD, ex: direct delivery to walmart, gas stations) and Warehouse Delivery (independent ware-house then distributes to customers)
Pepsi Forecast = 70% accuracy via DSD; 60% accuracy via warehouse (up to 4 weeks)
Big challenge is having 2 ERP systems (Pepsi = Oracle; Tropicana, Naked, Ga-torade, Quaker = SAP). Do you spend $40M to update the old system or spend $60M to put everyone on 1 system.
Cold fill is less expensive (Pepsi = cold fill, Gatorade = hot fill, changed Propel from hot fill to cold fill)
Transportation: 60% are company trucks (one of the few companies which still has its own fleet); and 40% are commercial vendors
Trying to set up a transportation brokerage service (other companies can use space on their trucks)
Suppliers are paying $ for information. Ex: Information on Walmart’s inventory position is valuble.
Walmart does not just share their quantities on hand, they have their suppliers pay for that information. Challenges in large mergers/acquisitions Legacy cultures are very different Winners and loosers in a restructuring Importance of Change management Learnings from Large Mergers/acquisitions Have a Combined Organizational Health team Words matter: “Chicago”, “Somers”,
“Bottlers” (getting everyone to view the organization as 1 entity)
People, Process, and Technology all need to work together for success
Supply Chain of the future =
AUTOMATION (building product, trucking/delivery, delivery prep)

The supply chain forum at Towson University was really good. One
Industrial and One academic speaker. By Rachea David
Speaker 2 = Thomas J. Goldsby, Logis-
tics Professor at University of Ohio
Topic = In Search of the Next Dominant Sup-
ply Chain Design (focused on consumer de-
livery systems)
Supply Chain Risk Management: If you
have a bad day, Consumers and Wall
Street are not so forgiving
Store revenues up, but consumer foot travel in
the stores is down. More online purchas-
ing.
Roads becoming more congested, transporta-
tion costs increasing, transportation
strikes, shortage of truck drivers, environ-
mental impacts
Transportation is used at multiple points
throughout the supply chain
Raw materials, processing, warehouse, distri-
bution, customer
New modes of transportation
Roadie = use Waffle House locations for ordi-
nary people to pick up/move freight
Uber/ Uber Freight (obsoleting the taxi?)
Automatic continuous ordering/availability
(refrigerator scans quantity of milk and
places the replacement order)
Collaborative distribution models (like Pepsi’s
brokerage transportation servive)
Drones
