Scripture Insights
“I long to depart this life and be with Christ,” says Saint Paul in today’s second reading. What do these words say to us about the depth, the faith, the prayer of the man who uttered them? Paul is not speaking our of depression, even though he is imprisoned at the time he writes (Philippians 1:7, 17). His words come from a deep desire within his heart and a strong conviction of faith. “For to me life is Christ, and death is gain.” As a Pharisee, Paul would have believed in the resurrection of the dead prior to his conversion to Christ. But it is not just resurrected life that Paul longs for; it is to be with Christ in the fullness of his glory. Not only had the risen Jesus appeared to him at his conversion, but Paul had even glimpsed the glory of paradise in some type of mystical prayer experience as he described in his second letter to the Corinthians (12:1-4). Paul’s personal experience of Christ rooted him firmly in Christ. “I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Philippians 3:8). Once could even say that Paul lived and breathed Christ: “I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) What a model for us to ponder! But how does one attain such Christ centeredness? To be sure, Paul’s per-sonal experience of Jesus was gift and grace. But it is also true that we can open ourselves to grace in various ways – by being faithful to prayer, reading the Scriptures, fasting, meditating on the sacred, and other acts of de-votion which help to cultivate a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. Let us cultivate such practices so that we too may be open to the graces, the nearness of Christ. __________________________________________________________________________________________
Mass Intentions 2021
We are currently accepting weekend and daily Mass intentions for the 2021 calendar year. Because we are still using only one worship site (church) for our weekend Masses, we are accepting multiple intentions for our weekend Masses, and when necessary, for our daily Masses. When we are given the go ahead to reopen our two other church buildings, we will transfer the intentions to the church and Mass time you indicate/desire. Your pa-tient understanding is very much appreciated. To schedule a Mass intention, we would prefer that you please call the parish office (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) on 508-673-7831. You may also write your list of dates and intentions and send them (post or e-mail) to the office. The suggested donation for Mass is $10. __________________________________________________________________________________________
Faith Formation 2020-2021
We are currently developing plans for our 2020-2021 Faith Formation program for children/youth in Grades 1 through 9. With all of the upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we want our families to first get their chil-dren settled in the school year before worrying about Faith Formation. In the meantime, we encourage you to join us for Sunday Mass in person or by social media via our websites or our Facebook page. See the first page of this bulletin for web addresses. Information will be e-mailed to our families in the very near future. New registrations will begin soon. Your patient understanding is very much appreciated.
Autumn Flower Drive
With the approach of Autumn, we would like to beautify our parish properties, especially around the shrines to the Blessed Mother. To that end, we invite you to make donations in memory of loved ones. These names will be published in the parish bulletins and will be remembered in our daily Masses during the month of October, the month of the Holy Rosary. We would like to purchase both large and small pots of colorful Fall mums. If at all possible, a donation of $20 or more would allow us to make this possible. Of course, any donation amount will be gratefully received. To make your donation, please use a separate envelope marked “Flowers.” With your donation (you can make out checks to whichever of our three parish-es) please include the names of loved ones to be remembered and atwhat church you would like your flowers placed. Donations can be dropped in the collection boxes at weekend Mass or sent to the parish office. We are most grateful for your generosity and assistance.
_____________________________________________________________________________ Veteran’s Day Project
Our nation honors all who have served in our armed forces on November 11, Veteran’s Day. The Catholic Com-munity of Somerset and Swansea proudly boasts of a number of parishioners and family members who have served, and are currently serving, in the military. At Mass on the weekend before Veteran’s Day, we would like to recognize, honor and thank these parishioners (and family members) for their service There are three categories under which we invite you to submit names: (1) Veterans, those who have served for any number of years in any branch of the Armed Services; (2) those currently on Active/Reserve Duty; (3) De-ceased Veterans, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. You may list those you wish to recognize on a piece of paper (please print clearly!) and either drop your list in the
collection boxes or send them to the parish office by post or by e-mail. There is no limit on the num-ber of names you can submit. Names of our veterans will be published/posted for the Veteran’s Day holiday.

This week’s Saint celebration: Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, “Padre Pio” Born Francesco Forgione, Padre Pio grew up in a family of farmers in southern Italy. Twice his father worked in Jamaica, New York, to provide the family income. At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins and took the name of Pio. He was ordained in 1910 and was drafted during World War I. After he was discovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917, he was assigned to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the city of Bari on the Adriatic. On September 20, 1918, as he was making his thanksgiving after Mass, Padre Pio had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended, he had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side. Life became more complicated after that. Medical doctors, Church authorities, and curiosity seekers came to see Padre Pio. In 1924, and again in 1931, the authenticity of the stigmata was questioned; Padre Pio was not permitted to celebrate Mass publicly or to hear confessions. He did not complain of these deci-sions, which were soon reversed. However, he wrote no letters after 1924. His only other writing, a pam-phlet on the agony of Jesus, was done before 1924. Padre Pio rarely left the friary after he received the stigmata, but busloads of people soon began coming to see him. Each morning after a 5 a.m. Mass in a crowded church, he heard confessions until noon. He took a mid-morning break to bless the sick and all who came to see him. Every afternoon he also heard confessions. In time his confessional ministry would take 10 hours a day; penitents had to take a number so that the situation could be handled. Many of them have said that Padre Pio knew details of their lives that they had never mentioned. Padre Pio saw Jesus in all the sick and suffering. At his urging, a fine hospital was built on nearby Mount Gargano. The idea arose in 1940; a committee began to collect money. Ground was broken in 1946. Building the hospital was a technical wonder because of the difficulty of getting water there and of haul-ing up the building supplies. This “House for the Alleviation of Suffering” has 350 beds. A number of people have reported cures they believe were received through the intercession of Padre Pio. Those who assisted at his Masses came away edified; several curiosity seekers were deeply moved. Like Saint Francis, Padre Pio sometimes had his habit torn or cut by souvenir hunters. One of Padre Pio’s sufferings was that unscrupulous people several times circulated prophecies that they claimed originated from him. He never made prophecies about world events and never gave an opinion on matters that he felt belonged to Church authorities to decide. He died on September 23, 1968, and was beatified in 1999. His feast day is September 23. Reflection Referring to that day’s Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30) at Padre Pio’s canonization Mass in 2002, Saint John Paul II said: “The Gospel image of ‘yoke’ evokes the many trials that the humble Capuchin of San Gio-vanni Rotondo endured. Today we contemplate in him how sweet is the ‘yoke’ of Christ and indeed how light the burdens are whenever someone carries these with faithful love. The life and mission of Padre Pio testify that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted with love, transform themselves into a privileged journey of holiness, which opens the person toward a greater good, known only to the Lord.”
