• Tobacco industries are in a continuous struggle to maintain & increase their number of product consumers.
• They use media to maintain the continuous drive to keep the community smoking
Why do tobacco industries need publicity through media?
• To make the community aware of their product
• To gain more profits• To successfully compete with other
contesters
What kind of media do they use?
• Printed media– News papers– Magazines
• Multimedia– Web sites– Web based advertisements– Television– Radio
• Smokers themselves promote smoking
Whom Do They Target?
• Teenagers• Lonely people• Students (school & university)• Certain occupations– Forces– Fishermen– Drivers– Certain night duty workers
What do they try to convey?• “Smoking is fun”• “Smoking is a reward”• “Smoking is an oral pleasure”• “The cigarette: a modern hourglass”• “With a cigarette: I’m not alone”• “I like to watch the smoke”• “Smoking helps me to think”• “Smoking helps me to relax”• “I blow my troubles away”• “Cigarette taste has to be acquired”
What do they want?
• NOT each person to consume tobacco products as much as they can,& die soon;
• BUT, each of them to smoke at least one cigarette a day,& live longer…
Tactics Used
• Use of popular characters;– Film stars– Sportsmen– Athletes
RegulationsAgainst Them• Health education of people through
media• Blurring the smoking sceneries of
public telecasts (Films, advertisements etc.)
• Direct advertisement on smoking is prohibited through public media
• Smoking inside public transport buses is prohibited
How they have overcomethose barriers?
• Indirect advertisement on smoking• Through smokers (among friends)• By indicating theharmfulness of smokingin packages
