Green Fingers I knew a girl who was so pureShe couldn't say the word Manure.Indeed, her modesty was such,She wouldn't pass a rabbit-hutchAnd butterflies upon the wingWould make her blush like anything.
That lady is a gardener now,And all her views have changed, somehow. She squashes greenfly with her thumb,And knows how little snowdrops come:In fact the garden she has got,Has broadened out her mind a lot.

The October NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies) meeting takes place on Thursday October 27th at 2.30pm. Venue is the Powis Suite, Royal Oak Hotel, Welshpool.
The speaker is John Ericson, whose topic is Inn Signia — Pub Signs, the art work and the stories behind the names.Non-members are welcome, but a donation of £5 is suggested to help cover costs. No need to book, just turn up.For more information telephone Avril on 01938 555938 or e-mail [email protected]
National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies
The National Library of Wales has requested past and future copies of the Leighton News for a place in its archives. The British Library has
always required publishers to supply a copy of all books magazines, newspapers, etc. for the national record. We hardly thought a small village newsletter may be consid-ered in the same way. The request was emailed from the web site and David Williams responded with a link to his DropBox archive of the newsletters from 1986 to 2007.Aled Betts is the Acquisitions Librarian at the National Library and we followed up with a phone call to find out what format was most suitable. As hoped the PDF format is fine and Aled was pleased to be able to download the first tranche. He had come across a recent issue from this year so was interested to see the progression from the first cyclostyled sheet to the present day — he also comm-ented that it was rare to get an archive of this size when local newsletters frequently lasted no more than a few years. Will the Leighton News form part of a student’s research project in years to come?
So the sun shone on the Village Show once again while the midlands and the south-east were treated to steady rainy downpours. Thanks to Jane Walton for doing the honours once again with a splendid set of photos. As with all events we are lucky to fit in a fraction of the pictures available even with allocating 2½ pages. Some are only tiny thumb-nails but hope they’ll be enough to remind you of a grand day out.We are still planning some online picture galleries to display the whole lot — more info next issue — maybe.

We've had another successful 3k and 5k fun run at this years show. We had 16
competitors in the 3K race, which saw all the runners leave the show field and head up to the quarry and along the edge of the redwoods. We also had 10 runners in the 5K
race who also did the same scenic route, but went out to Goppas, then headed back to the show field along The Avenue, with the kind permission of James and Jean Potter. This years winners were
• 1st boy - Callum Morgan• 1st girl - Maddie Griffiths• 1st male - Todd Tanner • 1st female - Rebecca Moseley
Thank you to everyone who took part and to the parents who helped us on the day. Next year we will require some marshals on the routes as there are so many youngsters who wish to run: so if anyone could volunteer for half an hour on show day, please let us know, we really hope to hold the race again at next years show, but we do need a few pairs of eyes and waving arms to make the traffic aware the next Mo Farah or Jo Pavey are in training, and of course the youngsters are kept safe. Thanks again to everyone who ran and we hope to see more runners next year…. Sarah & Haydn
I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone who attended the show, but I would like to say a massive thank you to Rachel Tibbot and Gethin and Jane and Tony Walton and their families for the time and effort they, along with the support of the Leighton Events Group, put into the planning of the show, to ensure that every year we have a successful day. It brings together so many people to make some lovely memories. This event doesn't just happen and
it won't happen again without these remarkable people, so on behalf of Leighton community, 'Thank you' for a lovely show. It shows that we do have a lovely community spirit in Leighton, of which we should be very proud…. Sarah Jones

Cluster Flies (Pollenia rudis)
Cluster flies have a strange and somewhat gruesome life cycle. They often become apparent in early spring as they emerge in our homes after a winter hibernation. The flies are seen gathering or clustering in large numbers on south facing windows and walls as they warm up in the spring sunshine. They can cause some consternation in our centrally heated homes when they emerge out of season. In spring they are looking to mate and feed on the early flowers. Unlike the common house fly they feed on nectar and assist in pollination. Once mated they lay their eggs in the soil. When hatched the larvae locate and and eat into earthworms. Living as parasites they consume the earthworms until they pupate and emerge as an adults. They average two generations per year but may have up to four with the right conditions. Again they will return to our homes clustering in large numbers squeezing into our windows and loft spaces in late Autumn to hibernate and wait to begin the cycle again. There are many methods of treating fly infestations but as with any pest, proofing is the key.

HELP!Tyson the Royal corgi has been stolen!!!! It must have happened either late last night or early this morning BUT our corgi has definitely GONE from by the Village Hall/School roadside!
Has anyone any info on it? I know that my own dogs occasionally stray but I really did not expect the wooden corgi to do the same! I had not had him chipped (although he is made of chipboard) so attached is a photo for ID purposes. He is house trained but obviously temperamental but then aren't we all. JW
DOGNAPPING - 7th September
16th September - update
As Tyson was stolen 2 days before the show it gave us great publicity with
Facebook and My Welshpool covering the story. Nobody has seen anything. Or did he wander off by himself?
If so he could be anywhere but maybe still close to the village. Keep your eyes open — all reported sightings will be investigated.

John & Jean Bennett’s Dispersal Sale at Goppas, Leighton Saturday 17th Sepember 2016
Today was the day of the Goppas dispersal sale. The MMP signs directing the many farm vehicles snaking up the lane to Goppas and glistening in the sunshine up to the car park on the top field with its trimmed hedges above the orchard. A farm dispersal sale is about a good trade, auctioneers, lots, penned animals, polished tractors, catering vans, deals done and commission paid but more than that its about the celebration of country life. Farmers work every day, 365 days of the year decade after decade in all weather and for
many years longer than most of us. Along the way they acquire many skills, knowledge of the seasons, crops and stock and also how to complete a great deal of paperwork as it is a way of life that is changing faster than any other industry. A
farmer is a farmer to their core. John and Jean are just
such farmers. All of the lots neatly lined up on the field and the whole farm immaculate. So many farmers and neighbours attended the sale on what was such a beautiful morning in a wonderful setting, some for a purchase, some for chat with old friends but all to show respect to two farmers who have done a great job.
