WELCOME TO AFRICA

To attend a business event in Africa is to return time and again as a corporate or leisure traveller. One needs only to experience the hospitality, the charm, the beauty, and the professionalism to know that this continent is something special. Planning an event here is an exercise in effi ciency, as the relevant bureaus are at hand to assist and facilitate, and our professional conference organisers are world-renowned for their skills. In fact, ICCA President Nina Freysen-Pretorius is proudly South African, and a world leader in conference organising.

The COP 17 Conference, the World Economic Forum, the 5th BRICS Summit, amongst many others were successfully hosted in South Africa in recent years. In 2020, the World Ophthalmology Congress will take place in Cape Town; its biggest ever meeting, when 15 000 eye specialists convene in the city.

Many other African countries are following South Africa’s excellent example and aligning their off erings to the business traveller and conference delegate. Rwanda’s transition to sought-after conference destination serves as proof that Africa is indeed on the rise. The safety and stability that now characterises many African countries, such as Tanzania, Namibia, Zambia and Ethiopia, serve as brilliant examples of Africa’s growth and progress. The infrastructure, facilities, cuisine, service and incentive opportunities put many African destinations on par with Melbourne, Paris and Houston.

Much has been said about Africa’s inherent natural beauty, but it is time to recognise the continent for its other exceptional assets; it’s people. But words alone cannot give due justice; come and see for yourself.- Lance Gibbons,Publishing Editor

The Event Planner’s Guide to Africa is a vital resource for local and international business-event planners. The fourth edition of this prestigious publication includes an extensive CV of events successfully hosted in Africa in recent years, including an overview of the industry sectors and essential information about visiting and doing business on the continent. The South Africa National Convention Bureau (the SANCB) is proud to endorse this important publication, and we look forward to welcoming you to our famous shores. The SANCB is ideally positioned to facilitate the planning and hosting of international business events, due to our strategic support services and extensive network of industry contacts. Rise with our ability to deliver.- Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo, Chief Convention Bureau Offi cer of the South Africa National Convention Bureau

A quick search on the World Wide Web brings up significant accolades for South Africa. ‘The Mother City is Tops, Survey Finds’

one headline reads. ‘10 Reasons South Africa is the Coolest Country in the World’ says another. It’s not hard to believe these words, because South Africa has proven her track record time and again on the world stage.

Not only has the nation scooped many awards in the last few years, but it also has a wealth of natural beauty around every corner. Added to this is its dependable infrastructure and network of support services, while the weather, exchange rate, tour opportunities and varied venue options are equally attractive to locals and internationals.

A Place for BusinessSouth Africa is a key driver for the continent’s economy. Its main industries

include automobile manufacture, mining, ICT and electronics, finance, agriculture, film, and of course tourism. Not only does it have state-of-the-art convention centres in almost every major city, but the country also offers exquisite venues for smaller functions, business meetings and corporate events.

Cape Town is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, while Johannesburg is the financial and entertainment epicentre. Durban offers fabulous nightlife, weather and beaches like the famed Golden Mile, and Tshwane is the nation’s judicial centre with international embassies, museums and plenty of cultural offerings. Other cities like Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Kimberley and Polokwane are diverse and rich in both their business opportunities and their natural and cultural attractions.

Service You Can Trust (With a Smile)As one of the most welcoming nations in the 21st century, the Rainbow Nation is well-equipped to give you an unforgettable experience. International airports with full accessibility are conveniently located near major cities, with connecting flights to smaller towns, national parks and tourist destinations readily available. The country has one of the most advanced travel infrastructures in Africa, offering visitors myriad transportation options including buses, taxis, trains and car rentals. South Africa also has numerous five-star hotels and luxury resorts across the country for incredible incentive getaways. And one thing you can always count on is that our people will go the extra mile to help you feel at home.

The country is known for its sunny weather with an average rainfall of 464mm (compared to the world average of 860mm). Coastal regions have the warmest winter temperatures, and although further inland temperatures are warm during winter days, they can get chilly after sundown. Summer months are mid-October to mid-February, with a Mediterranean climate in the Western Cape’s coastal areas.

• The South African Constitution guarantees freedom of worship. Although 80% of South Africa is Christian, other major religious groups include Hindus, Muslims, Jews and Buddhists, with a minority not belonging to any.

• There are nine provinces: Eastern Cape, Free State, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West, Northern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Although most South Africans speak English, there are eleven official languages and many more others spoken throughout the country.

• The national flag is a much-loved symbol of patriotism, while the national bird is the blue crane, the national animal the springbok, and the national flower the protea.

• South Africa has a land mass of 1 233 404 square kilometres with nearly 3 000km coastline washed by the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic – so you’ll never tire of exploring!

Travel Tips• Electricity is available almost

everywhere in South Africa. The supply is 220/230 volts AC 50 HZ. Most plugs are 15 amp 3-prong, or 5 amp 2-prong with round pins. Be sure to bring an adaptor with you, or you can grab one locally at the airport or hardware store. US-made appliances may need a transformer.

• Drinking water straight from the tap or faucet is safe – in fact, our tap water is said to be among the safest and cleanest in the world. Avoid drinking from rivers or streams, however, as these may carry water-borne diseases.

• South Africa offers three 24 hour emergency services for medical assistance, should you need it. ER24 and Netcare 911 are privately-run emergency services, while the national Emergency Management Service (EMS) includes ambulance services and fire departments.

• Regulations apply for pets entering the country. A quarantine period of 14 days applies to dogs from certain countries, while an import permit and health clearance certificate is required for all pets.

• Disabled facilities in South Africa are on the increase, with a number of local specialist tour operators tailoring packages for disabled tourism, researching suitable resorts, attractions and activities. A useful online information service is provided by Disabled Travel.

• Before booking your flight, visit the Department of Home Affairs to see what your visa requirements are. Regulations have changes recently, and visas are no longer issued

upon arrival. Applications can be made through South African diplomatic or consular representatives. Requirements include a passport, photographs, proof of financial means, and for those with children, their birth certificates.

Attractions to Capture The Imagination From the exhilarating experience of the highest bungee jump in the world, to the heart-wrenching story of Mandela’s imprisonment on Robben Island, South Africa is packed with allure. There’s enough in this country to enthral even the most cautious of travellers!

Explore the Big 5 of Africa in the Kruger National Park, or simply create your own ‘big five’ experience – safari, culture, romance, adventure, entertainment – these can all be found within our

borders. Cage dive with great white sharks, zipline through East Coast forests, hop on a hot-air balloon across the wide open expanses, or simply explore the culinary wonders South Africa has to offer.

Delegates and business travellers are also at an ideal position to discover South Africa more intimately. Not only does each city offer top-of-the-range incentive options, but there are many pre- and post-event tour opportunities, too – not to mention close proximity to conference centres and meeting places.

Convention Centre which most recently hosted the Kenya MICE Expo in January 2016. The country has successfully attracted business-events regularly, including the 10th World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference among other bids. As a result of this interest, hotels such as Kempinski have been talking about increasing bed capacity to accommodate visitors, while Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has enhanced connectivity to create a regional commercial hub.

Further south in Tanzania, Arusha International Conference Centre lies halfway between Cape Town and Cairo. A stone’s throw away from Mt Kilimanjaro and the safari gateway to the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and other stunning national parks, the city offers conference goers everything they need and more. With a total of around 11 000 conference delegates per year, the city is growing its business-events industry with vigour, while AICC itself now has the AICC Hospital and Estates, as well as the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar Es Salaam under its banner.

The last few years have seen the continent of Africa show its true potential in the international meetings arena. African members

of global organisations have risen to leadership heights – markedly Nina Freysen-Pretorius elected as President of ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) in 2015, and Craig Newman elected to serve on the African Board of UFI (The Global Association of the Exhibitions Industry) in late 2014. Both have championed South Africa and the greater region and have shown that the continent can compete on the world stage.

Aside from its recent leadership prowess, Africa has long been renowned for its exhilarating tourism experiences. Wildlife of huge variety? Check. Fascinating historical and cultural attractions? Check. Award-winning resorts and hotels? Check. The list goes on. Each country has unique possibilities coupled with world-class service and top-of-the-range offerings.

For instance, Kenya’s capital Nairobi is home to the Kenyatta International

Rwanda has steadily been climbing the business-events ladder and will soon see its own International Convention Centre – the Rwanda Kigali Convention Complex – taking off. The nation also offers some breath-taking incentive travel opportunities through its lush, tropical environment.

Nigeria offers exciting business opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs and as a result is home to some stunning corporate venues in its commercial capital of Lagos. But perhaps the pinnacle of Nigeria’s climb has been the much anticipated Calabar Convention Centre in Cross River State. Announced at Meetings Africa in 2015, it is a state-of-the-art structure, which is set to hold the African Public Relations Association conference in May of this year.

South Africa is a continental leader in the meetings, incentive, conference and exhibitions sector. It has brought many international events to the continent since 2010’s iconic Soccer World Cup through its state-of-the-art convention centres. The country has won almost 200 successful bids for international events for the coming years

exquisite spicy tastes or dig into a dish of mouth-watering South African braai meat.

Most countries with vibrant meetings sectors – SA, Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda and Ethiopia to name a few – are both secure and protective of their international guests. Business-events hubs are well-developed, have safety measures in place, and, of course, offer the convenience of Wi-Fi and other amenities close at hand.

So what are you waiting for? Come and experience captivating peoples, fabulous wildlife, and unforgettable moments. Come to Africa.

through its unrivalled venues, tourism and business options. Cape Town International Convention Centre is the preferred destination for many medical congresses, while Durban International Convention Centre brings the sports fans and larger governmental and international events to its city. Gauteng is the commercial capital, meaning that business meetings and events have a home in the many conferencing venues, from Sandton Convention Centre and Gallagher, to CSIR ICC and the Expo Centre. Despite its strong and growing reputation, South Africa has still paved the way for global industries to forge relationships with others in Africa.

Fascinating Facts About Africa• Africa is home to the longest river in

the world, the Nile at 6 853km, the largest desert, the Sahara, and the largest freshwater lake – Lake Victoria.

• Arabic is spoken by 170 million on the continent, followed by English (130 million), Swahili (100 million), French (115 million), Berber (50 million), Hausa (50 million), Portuguese (20 million), and Spanish (10 million). Over 2 000 recognised languages are spoken in Africa

• Over 50% of Africans are under the age of 25, so you’re likely to be doing business with a relatively young crowd compared to the rest of

the world. • Africa’s wildlife is extraordinary and

astonishingly diverse. The continent is home to 85% of the world’s elephants, over 99% of its remaining lions, and more fish species than any other freshwater system on earth.

Though this diversity and collaboration is amiable and is no doubt attracting new business events to our shores each year, there are other strong factors that make a case for making Africa your next event destination of choice.

One is hospitality and client relations. Known for their friendly demeanour and willingness to help at every turn makes for a pleasant experience all round – not to mention the food! The continent has a variety of gourmet options as incredibly diverse as its ethnic groups. Dip into Morocco’s fusion of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes, explore West Africa’s

Professional Conference Organisers across the globe have a vested interest in Africa. From healthcare and finance to security, construction and mining,

PCOs are working in a variety of industries to create successful association meetings and annual congresses on the continent. Many of South Africa’s PCOs often work in the regional African market, while a number of global organisations have offices in the country or are involved in the local sector on some level.

2015 was a steady year for PCOs.

Although records were perhaps not broken, the industry has seen significant strides in infrastructure, standardisation and upskilling, which, in turn, has led to a strong and confident year across the board.

Companies like MCI Group reported a growth of almost 10% on Gross Margin – a feat considering the current global financial climate. The organisation also reported new partnerships with Emirates and Expedia, as well as investments in MCI South Africa, with in-roads into both the local corporate

and association market. They successfully activated two high-profile international association conferences for the Project Management Institute and the African Securities Exchange Association, and will be growing their Johannesburg offices and plan for a satellite branch in Durban in the future.

The future of PCOs in Africa is looking bright. Local PCOs are bringing more and more international association conferences and business events to the region. Not only has South Africa as a country secured

over 170 bids for events over the next few years, but PCOs are doing well, too. A great example is Scatterlings Conference and Events, who have secured a number of significant international association conferences to 2018. Their 2015 highlights included organising the World Congress of Pharmacology at the CTICC and the International Mineralogical Congress at the Sandton Convention Centre. Their 2016 events include the World Psychiatry Congress, and they will also be organising all the conferences for the African Union Foundation on the continent. The Conference Company has also done extremely well – but this comes as no surprise considering their founder and energetic leader Nina Freysen-Pretorius has reached new heights as the President of ICCA. This, in turn, has resulted in more of a focus on professional conference organisers on the African continent as more companies bring their events to this region.

Of course, there has also been movement in the industry, with the Association of African Exhibition Organisers (AAXO) forming last year to provide more focused services and support for exhibition planners. AAXO includes exhibition organisers across a range of trade, consumer and conference-driven exhibitions in Southern Africa, namely Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery, MMI South Africa, Hypenica, Thebe Reed Exhibitions, Spintelligent, Terrapinn, The Wedding Group, LTE (Leaders

Companies have also grown and added to their fold with Tribal Meetings announcing Nadia Allie as new CEO recently, and with Conference Consultancy SA adding two more positions to their establishment – as well as two executives passing the stringent Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) exam. Their MD, Pieter Swart, was recognised as PCMA Global Meeting Executive of the Year at IMEX Frankfurt 2015.

Other notable PCOs in SA are Imfunzelelo, Turners Conferencing, African Agenda, Event Dynamics, Paragon and Eastern Sun.

Many PCOs are echoing Minister Derek Hanekom’s recent speech at IBTM World. Africa is a burgeoning and ever-growing business-events economy that we can no longer afford to ignore. Tribal Meetings’ Nadia Allie sums it up nicely: “If one considers that four of the fastest-growing economies of the world are in Africa, and one in three people are moving towards becoming middle class out of a population of 1.1 billion, that number presents a huge opportunity. The world is no longer looking at Africa as a continent of drought and misery, and investments are flowing in and economies are growing exponentially. The business-events industry should be poised to exploit this opportunity.”

Having won the coveted Diamond Arrow Award at the latest PMR.africa Business Excellence Awards Ceremony on 31 August 2015, the Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC) is officially recognised as one of the top Exhibitions and Events venues in South Africa. This comes as no surprise when one considers that for the past 30 years, the JEC has been consistently delivering events of a world-class standard. “We take great pride in knowing that we can cater to the varied needs of our clients,” explains JEC CEO Craig Newman. “We have a diverse portfolio of clients gracing our halls each year and our main objective is to deliver an experience that has them returning for the next event. The greatest compliment is when a satisfied customer wishes to work with us again.”

“Our event took place seamlessly and the team at JEC was an absolute pleasure to work with,” says Bibi Burness, organiser for the South African Breweries Extravaganza. “It’s a well-designed, world-class venue that is perfectly suited to hosting large crowds of people. We won’t hesitate to return.”

Unlike any other venue, the Expo Centre has the capacity, expertise, experience, resources and strategic partnerships to host an event of any description. “The versatility, proximity and convenience of the JEC is what has us returning time and again,” says Christo Visser, Operations

and Logistics Manager for Polyoak Packaging.“We are proud to be recognised for what

we are achieving but mostly we are happy that our clients’ expectations are being met,” says Newman. “We will always look to improve our service offering so that our clients never experience anything less than the very best,” he concluded.

South Africa has long had a strong conferencing industry that has grown steadily year on year. Part of the reason for this continuous growth

is that it is perceived as the ‘gateway to

Africa’, and part of the reason is its advanced infrastructure, constant development, and investment in the business events, tourism, and incentive travel sectors.

2015 saw South Africa reach some

impressive milestones. Most notably was the 163 bids the South Africa National Convention Bureau (SANCB) secured for the country between 2016 and 2020. This is expected to bring over 150 000 delegates to the country and will contribute approximately R3.1-billion to the economy. The nation also has a vibrant association-meetings industry, with 178 local associations registered on the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) database to date. This is sure to play a role in growing regional rotating meetings. Below is a roundup of the major events that have taken place in the conferencing space over the last twelve months.

Association Congress RoundupAn incredible number of association and other conferences took place in South Africa recently. Meetings Africa saw a number of bodies such as the Event Greening Forum and ICCA conduct official members’ meetings at the trade show, while EXSA inducted 3D Group’s Conrad Kullman into the Hall of Fame at the annual latest EXSA Awards. The Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI) held their annual congress in Cape Town last year with hot topics like events technology, branding, and government tenders on the programme.

Not only local associations held their meetings in SA, but many international organisations did so as well. The International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT) Conference and

ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE BUSINESS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Association BodiesThe Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI) is the recognised body of the conference and meetings industry in southern Africa. Since 1987 it has been dedicated to efficiency and professionalism in the industry. The work they do is guided by four key pillars: SAACI Community, SAACI Intelligence, SAACI Academy and SAACI Into Africa. Four key tributary pillars support these: branding and communication, stakeholder engagement, sustainability, and future focus.

the World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology were held in Cape Town, the International Union of Architects flocked to Durban for their congress, the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA) held their 19th meeting in Johannesburg, and the prestigious World Economic Forum on Africa was also held in Cape Town at the CTICC.

Other Conferencesand MeetingsIn terms of other meetings that took place in the country, the CTICC saw 32 international conferences and 27 national held within its venue. This brought a total of 35 091 international delegates and 18 650 national delegates to the centre, according to their Integrated Annual Report. “Our performance is measured not only against the bottom line, but also in terms of the contribution we make to the social and economic development of Cape Town, the Western Cape and South Africa,” Julie-May Ellingson, CEO of the CTICC said.

Sandton Convention Centre saw a

number of high-profile governmental and other conferences through its doors. These included the African Union Summit in July, DISCOP Africa, which rated SCC as a ‘dream’ venue, and the South African Association of Pharmacists in Industry (SAAPI), which held its conference at SCC for the first time.

Although Durban ICC has been thriving in its conferencing and events, the venue picked up other accolades, too. It was voted Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre at the World Travel Awards in 2015, and shattered the glass ceiling for women in leadership with 57.5% of the centre’s workforce comprising women. Its revenue for 2014 reached R152-million, with a profit before tax of R29-million. “Diligent management at all levels of the company ensured the company maintained its strong gross profit percentage of 76% from the previous financial year. In addition, thorough cost-cutting kept our expenditure to 5% below budget, resulting in a R24-million Net Profit after tax”, said Melanie Rambally, Durban ICC Financial Director.

Globally, the exhibitions industry has fared well, with the African continent and South Africa in particular seeing more growth

than expected considering a number of economic, medical and political challenges. South Africa has long had a vibrant exhibitions industry – more recently in the business sector as well as in public expos. This strong foundation has meant that despite challenges, the nation’s exhibitions industry has expanded and has forged ahead in creating future opportunities for itself and its neighbours.

According to statistics from UFI’s 2015 Global Exhibition Barometer, South African

companies expected their turnover to decrease only slightly compared to the same period the year before, with 57% expecting an increase in turnover. That said, Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom was extremely positive about the potential for Africa and South Africa’s MICE industry during his address at ibtm world in late 2015.

“The potential of Africa for the MICE industry is exponential. The tide has turned, we can see that our growth opportunities are now also within the African market,” he told delegates, “South Africa offer the business-events industry excellent value for money, deliver authentic, memorable and enriching

experiences in one of the most captivating, safest and beautiful countries that I am proud to call my home,” Minister Hanekom concluded.

Industry Roundup Thanks to an incredible variety of state-of-the-art facilities, South Africa is well-placed to accommodate any exhibition or business event. The last year has been testament to this fact, with South Africa securing 163 bids for events across diverse industries such as mining, health and agriculture.

Some of the well-known local and international exhibitions that were held on our shores include Meetings Africa, INDABA, World

Travel Market Africa, ibtm africa, Markex, Sports and Events Tourism Exchange, AfricaCom, and Investing in African Mining Indaba. 2016 already has a packed exhibition schedule, with events like Design Indaba, Hobby-X, Decorex, Africa Forum, My Business Expo and many more set for the fi rst few months of the year.

Business to Business OpportunitiesIt goes without saying that South Africa offers incredible business opportunities through face-to-face meetings at exhibitions. For instance, the 2nd WTM Africa contributed to the continent’s tourism sector with over 570 exhibitors, 82% new buyers from over 45 countries, and over 7 600 prescheduled meetings. And while the numbers at the 2015 INDABA decreased compared to the previous year, prescheduled meetings by delegates increased from 2 400 to over 8 700.

Meetings Africa is staying true to its overarching theme of ‘Advancing Africa Together’. The trade show celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015 with 13 African countries representing over 41 products, while 66% of all international hosted buyers had never visited South Africa before – a robust indicator of the world’s interest in doing business in and with the country.

Mixing Business with PleasureOf course as home to some of the most extraordinary fauna, fl ora and historical features, South Africa is the perfect destination if you’re hoping to mix business and pleasure. Not only are there some fabulous incentive travel opportunities, pre- and post-event tours, and city-wide attractions, but the locals are always happy to lend a helping hand or go the extra mile to make you feel welcome. From the affordable exchange rate to its natural beauty, great weather and over 130 adventures from bungee jumping to shark-cage diving, there’s something for everyone – including exhibitors!

by their members, AAXO has the energy and expertise to deal with the unique challenges professionals in the industry are faced with.

“We believe that exhibition organisers need a collective voice to lobby various stakeholders,” says Carol Weaving, MD of Thebe Reed and Chairperson of AAXO. “Priorities need to be on annual research and industry benchmarking, tracking trends and quantifying our industry in terms of its size and value.”

The incentive travel industry in South Africa is alive and thriving. And, with so many options to choose from, the country has recently

launched a new campaign called ‘What’s Your Big Five?’, encouraging travellers to share their personal experiences of SA – be it safari, culture, romance, adventure or entertainment.

Companies like Dragonfly Africa, Rhino Africa, Giltedge and Crystal Events and Incentives offer a number of exciting experiences for companies wishing to explore incentive opportunities for their employees. The country has been declared one of the 18 megadiverse destinations in the world and is a pioneer in responsible tourism initiatives. Incentive packages also include ‘voluntourism’ where folks can get involved in numerous conservation projects to protect its natural heritage, or contribute to the country’s social wellbeing.

Some of the most popular things to do

include visiting the Cape and its surrounds, especially the Cape Winelands and Table Mountain National Park, as well as a trip to Sun City, luxury rail tours with companies like Rovos Rail, exploring the frenetic, urban expanse of Johannesburg, and, of course, a road trip along the luscious Garden Route along the eastern coast.

Incentive News UpdatesDragonfly Africa Group, one of the leading DMCs in Southern and East Africa, recently announced a management buyout of the business. CEO Mike Waller and three other executives will acquire additional shares, meaning the people who have invested their time and expertise over the company’s 30-odd year existence will continue to maintain its success.

The Durban KwaZulu-Natal Convention Bureau hosted a high-level German site inspection team of eight significant

incentive and corporate meeting buyers. According to a recent Tourism Business

Council of South Africa (TBCSA) Tourism Business Index Report, overall the industry achieved above normal business performance levels for the last quarter of 2015. The weak exchange rate was cited as the most prominent positive factor stimulating foreign tourism, although domestic tourism leisure demand proved to be the biggest performance driver over this period.

The Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) Southern Africa held the Business Events Conference 2016 at Century City Conference Centre in partnership with Wesgro, Gearhouse and the SITE Foundation in January.

South Africa and its neighbours have been growing their meetings footprint over the last few years to include not only local corporate

meetings, but rotating regional meetings as well. There is still much opportunity for growth, especially with South Africa attracting 69 955 international association professionals in 2015 – positioning it as the top convention destination in Africa and the Middle East.

In the true spirit of the continent, trade shows like Meetings Africa, World Travel Market Africa, and INDABA have focused heavily on collaboration and partnerships. Associations, too, have taken up this mantle of working together to present robust, cohesive business events that are capable of meeting the needs of locals and internationals with world-class standards.

for international associations to grow their membership by hosting congresses in Africa…Africa is generally an easy our travelling time from most destinations and with the network that our partners Emirates have, a stopover in Dubai is always an attractive addition.” She adds that in the South African context, not only are there a huge number of South African professionals and academics gaining recognition on an international level, but “the country itself is world-renowned for its beauty, diversity and hospitality.”

The meetings sector of the business-events industry has seen rapid growth recently despite the less than favourable economic climate, particularly in the form of property upgrades, renovations and new facilities. One of the most prominent of these is the Century City Conference Centre (CCCC), which opened its doors in early 2016 to fi ll a gap in the small to medium-sized conference sector. Others like Aquila Private Game Reserve, Lanzerac Hotel and Spa and NH The Lord Charles have all revamped their offerings and offer meeting space for between 90 and 600 pax.

Hotel growth has spiked tremendously across the continent, a sign of how business travellers are increasingly visiting Africa for both long and short-term trips. Hilton plans on new hotels in Africa, with

7 250 rooms in its pipeline, while Carlson Rezidor has 6 953 rooms spread across 32 hotels. Marriott has 6 412 rooms in its development plans – up 22% since 2014.

South Africa’s meetings industry is looking good for 2016, with a number of conference organisers and local companies sharing a bright outlook for the future of the industry. As Sylvia Andre of MCI Group so perfectly puts it, “The future of the business events in Africa is undoubtedly bright. On an educational level, there is enormous potential

• Sustainability will become entrenched in building design and occupier requirements, with Africa’s most ambitious countries changing city design and building practices. (PwC, Real Estate 2020: Building the Future) This is already evident in the new and more fl exible conferencing venues and hotel accommodation going up across the continent.

Africa has a vibrant association sector, with South Africa leading the continent in its membership opportunities. Local associations

have been championing interaction and collaboration with regional bodies over the last few years. In 2014, South Africa hosted 124 international association conferences, of which 81% were international rotating events. 178 South African associations are registered on the ICCA database.

International AssociationsCape Town International Convention Centre’s CEO Julie-May Ellingson became the first African representative to be voted onto the AIPC Board of Directors in August 2015. “It is the first time that we have representation from Africa and we look forward to increased collaboration with the African continent in our quest to share knowledge and best practice,” Geoff Donaghy, AIPC President said in a statement.

“I strongly advocate for partnerships and knowledge exchange and believe my experience gained within the public and private sectors, leading two significant international convention centres in Africa, as well as my understanding of the African market will contribute to the continued growth in the value proposition of the AIPC in both Africa and internationally,” Ellingson said.

Johannesburg Expo Centre CEO Craig Newman, who also serves as Vice Chair for UFI Middle East/Africa Chapter, has been vocal about African association movement. “We believe that Africa represents the next frontier for growth and development for this association, and global membership can only benefit by giving Africa its support. As such, I spend a great deal of my time and energy on creating even greater awareness around UFI, promoting what it has to offer the industry, and most importantly - growing its footprint in the African region,” he said recently. exciting year ahead. Says Cindy Wandrag: “The vision of AAXO is to be a powerful voice representing the interests of exhibition organisers and promoting the growth of the industry. In 2016, AAXO will host a number of training and networking events for organisers and member-associated exhibitors, boosting collaboration with venues and suppliers. AAXO will also be pursuing ongoing research efforts into the South African and African markets, in order to provide valuable insights and resources to members.”

Congress 2017 takes place in South Africa.ICCA announced their new five-year

strategic plan at the General Assembly before last year’s Congress in Buenos Aires. It includes a new vision to shape the future and value of international association meetings by positioning the association closer to the aspirations of its members’ clients. “Why a new Strategic Plan? Quite simply, the world around us is changing,” ICCA President Nina Freysen-Pretorius said in her address at the congress. “ICCA itself faces increased competition – for our time, our attention and our marketing money; ICCA members face even worse competition – locally, nationally, internationally and in cyber-space; and less obviously perhaps, so do the international associations we work with.”

The local chapter of SITE, the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence, recently rebranded to SITE Southern Africa. “The great advantage is that we can now officially network and grow together. There is an ocean of opportunities out there and the more industry partners we reach out to, the better we can share experiences and get better at our game,” SITE Southern Africa President Tes Proos said. The body’s priority for the next two years is to develop their younger members in the business travel industry.

Local AssociationsEXSA held their annual conference at Spier in the Western Cape. The organisation continually strives to increase the significance of exhibitions and events through face-to-face marketing, says Sue Gannon, EXSA General Manager. “EXSA will roll out its very own Academy in 2016 to actively grow and develop skills specific to the industry. The Academy will meet the growing demand for skills development and job creation and cover all compliance, legislative and training needs for its members and the larger events industry.”

SAACI, the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry, has a clear focus for the coming year. Says Adriaan Liebetrau, CEO of SAACI: “SAACI’s focus for 2016 is captured in our theme for the year, ‘With Knowledge, It’s Possible’. As we launched the SAACI Academy at the end of 2015, our key member benefit drive will be online learning and expanding on our face-to-face short courses already taking place at our head office to the

regional branches in South Africa.” They aim to launch branches in

Northern Cape, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo by Mid-May, with an SADC expansion as well. “As many new initiates were introduced to our members in 2015, head office will look at efficiency through refinement, finding ways to streamline our operations even further, and making it easier for our members to find information and have access to the list of benefits we offer,” he concluded.

SustainabilitySouth Africa is fast-becoming an urbanised nation. Out of almost 60 million people, 59% of the population live in urban communities, this according to Statistics SA 2014 and UNESCO 2006. As such, the country is wholly invested in finding sustainable solutions to all areas of its society.

This is never more evident than in the business-events sector. Not only is South Africa home to Hotel Verde, the world’s greenest hotel, but many exhibitions and trade shows have green awards or initiatives associated with them. The Event Greening Forum (EGF) is very involved in creating a more standardised and sustainable, green events industry, offering training, workshops, guidelines and support to PCOs, venues, exhibitors and suppliers.

Safety and Security The rainbow nation is sufficiently equipped to respond to and guard against high-risk situations during conferences, events and special functions. The country’s health and safety codes are upheld by most professionals working within the industry, while many also offer the ability to beef up security details if needed or requested. A number of convention centres such as Sandton Convention Centre and CSIR ICC are well versed in dealing with high-profile international and governmental guests and as such have strong protocols in place to support these kinds of events.

Entertainment and Down TimeSouth Africa is a wealth of natural, historical, cultural and adventure attractions. When you’re not heading off to your next corporate meeting, or if you’re planning an incentive getaway for your employees; this country is ideally situated

South Africa is not only equipped with a mountain of specialist services to cater to your every whim and fancy, but the country

also services the wider African continent, as well as many international clients. With ever-developing infrastructure and a growing economy, the country is well-positioned to facilitate any meeting, event, conference, or incentive engagement.

Food and HospitalityAlthough South Africa has delectable traditional treats to tantalise any foodie, the country also offers a variety of western and eastern dishes to cater to the less adventurous. Countless wine-tasting routes and five-star restaurants cater to your every whim and fancy, while metropolitan areas are a paradise to the discerning palate.

Added to the diversity of food choices are the country’s business-event catering capabilities. Durban ICC’s chefs, for instance, have received accolades and awards for their gastronomic creations.

Most venues and suppliers offer flexible hospitality and food arrangements for visitors, including catering to those with vegetarian, religious or medical needs.

Food and Hospitality Africa takes place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. It is an ideal place for meeting those servicing this sector, and is the only pan-African food, drink and hospitality trade show.

Transportation and AccessibilityTransportation in South Africa is convenient and easily accessible. Three major international airports are located in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, while smaller regional airline hubs offer connecting flights – often daily.

A range of rental agencies offer visitors wheels at the airport, while many others are available in all major cities and towns. Johannesburg, Tshwane, Cape Town and Durban also have advanced public transport networks including the Gautrain, so named for the province in which it is situated.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) recently acquired the first train of their R172-billion, ten-year investment in modern, state-of-the-art passenger trains, to replace the current Metrorail system. Cape Town continues to invest in MyCiti bus infrastructure across the city bowl and beyond. Metered taxis

76 BUSINESS EVENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA www.theevent.co.za

South Africa has gone from strength to strength in its business-events industry. The nation already has an excellent track record in hosting

international events, from COP17 and the 5th BRICS Summit to the recent World Economic Forum. Few other destinations have such a variety of options in the field. With such growth, South Africa is poised to become the premier long-haul destination of the future.

Conferences, Meetings and ExhibitionsEvent planners will truly enjoy the professionalism and capabilities South Africa has to offer. The country is Africa’s top meetings and events destination, and added to this is their year-on-year rise in the global ICCA rankings. It rose two places, from 34th to 32nd position in 2014, having hosted 124 international and regional business events. Its cities are also reflections of this success, with Cape Town remaining the most successful city in SA for business events at 41st on the ICCA list. Johannesburg made the most improvement as a city, moving from 136 in 2013 to a remarkable

101st in the ranks in 2014. The sunny city of Durban tied with the cities of Auckland, Basel, Bordeaux and Montpellier at 125th.

The country offers some stunning venues for conferences, events and expos. These include stadiums hosting anywhere between 43 500 and 94 000, large convention and exhibition centres such the Durban ICC, Johannesburg Expo Centre, Sandton Convention Centre and the CTICC, and small to mid-sized venues like Gallagher Convention Centre, Emperors Palace, Sun City Resort, and Century City Conference Centre. South African suppliers are also well-positioned with the expertise and experience to handle almost any job. Many have flexible and sustainable options for event planners to choose from.

Incentive Travel and Pre- and Post-Event ToursIf your delegates are visiting South Africa for the first time, the country offers an incredible selection of pre- and post-event tours. These include tours of the city they are in, as well as bespoke tours – from a visit to the diamond mines and bicycling through Soweto, to

art galleries, game drives and more. Incentive travel is also a robust

sector of South Africa’s business-events economy. No matter what your requirements or needs, South Africa can cater to it with its sheer diversity in attractions, activities and adventures.

SA’s Track RecordIn 2016, South Africa is set to host the International AIDS Conference from 17-20 July 2016 with over 20 000 delegates set to attend. In September, the 35th International Geological Congress will be held, attracting the world’s thought leaders and academics. And in 2017, UFI will hold its Congress in South Africa. The nation has already secured 177 international association conferences for the next five years, which is meant to generate an estimated R3.5-billion in economic impact. Johannesburg, one of the biggest cities in Africa is situated in Gauteng and affectionately referred to as ‘Egoli’, or simply ‘Jozi’. Established in 1886,

it is relatively young for a major city, but is distinguished nonetheless. Though not an official capital of the country, it is the undisputed economic hub and most powerful commercial centre on the continent. Additionally, about 70% of South African companies are headquartered there. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is one of the top twenty worldwide in terms of market capitalisation. Gauteng’s Tshwane is the administrative capital of South Africa – it is the location of the executive branch of government

– and has a population of about 2.9 million. In close proximity to Johannesburg, the Jacaranda City – named after its purple-hued trees – is very distinct from its neighbour. Its cityscape is characterised by some prominent monuments, like the Voortrekker Monument and the iconic Union Buildings, built by Sir Herbert Baker and known for its impressive gardens. Its most distinguished moment occurred when Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected

President; and his impressive nine-metre statue, with arms outstretched to the nation, towers here in remembrance.

It is the diplomatic hub of South Africa, having the most foreign representative bodies in the world, bar Washington. As the seat of government, all related departments are within the city precinct. It is also an academic hub, having four universities and seven national science councils.

The Dinokeng Game Reserve is the first free-roaming Big-5 residential game reserve in the province. A historical tour can be undertaken at Cullinan Gold Mine where most people consider the largest rough diamond in history was discovered.

The struggle for liberation is documented at Freedom Park as a symbol of hope, yet acknowledging a fraught past. If you have a love for all things aviation, a visit to the South African Airforce Museum will escort you to a storied aviation era with wartime artefacts and military equipment. The longest mono-cableway in Africa affords scenic views of the Magaliesburg and Hartbeespoort Dam, where locals converge for adventure activities.

Tshwane is very accessible due to the five major highways linking it to Gauteng’s other regions and neighbouring provinces and the renowned Gautrain connecting it with Johannesburg. It is a safe domestic destination and the region boasts outdoor

If variety is the spice of life, KwaZulu-Natal epitomises red-hot spicy, gauging from their multicultural populace and fiery cuisine! Situated on the

East Coast, hugging the Indian Ocean; its warm sea temperatures tempt the adventure and leisure-seeker alike. It is the second-most densely populated of the nine provinces in South Africa, roughly the size of Portugal and proffers oodles of majestic experiences befitting the royal Zulu kingdom. Thrill-seekers can indulge in activities like swimming with sharks, watching whales, fishing, diving and

snorkelling. To boot, safari expeditions are also available at game reserves.

Its western part is marked by the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Drakensberg mountain range, while the jewel in the crown is the alluring beach hotspot, Durban. Its famed Golden Mile offers many swim, surf and tan opportunities. Whilst there, drop in at the uShaka Marine World, savour a drink at Moyo’s cocktail bar on the pier and take a ride on the bright two-wheel carts or rickshaws. Durban International Convention CentreThis, the first convention centre in South Africa, was inaugurated by Nelson Mandela in 1997. Supremely versatile and undoubtedly world-class, its intelligent design and operable walls facilitate different configurations for meeting settings, which allow it to be opened up to form one large venue or sub-divided into 22 separate convention halls of various sizes.

Known for high standards of service excellence, it has been rated as one of the World Top 15 convention centres by AIPC. It epitomises seamless integration of international best practise with an African flavour. Its capacity is as follows: • Hall 1 offers a magnificent auditorium

seating 1 680 delegates. • The combination of Hall 1 and 2 is large

enough to accommodate a plenary audience of over 8 000 delegates or a banquet for over 4 000 guests.

• The full venue can accommodate 12 000 delegates for a plenary session

or a banquet of up to 5 000 guests.

Ethiopia is the revelation of Africa! Shirking off its past, it was awarded the highest honours in the tourism sector last year when

it was named the World’s Best Tourism Destination by the European Council on Tourism and Trade. Situated in the Horn of Africa with other countries associated with the easternmost extension of East Africa - Djibouti, Eritrea and Somalia, it is the second-most populous country in Africa and slightly larger than Egypt.

Ethiopia woke us all up to the wonder of coffee as it was discovered there in the ninth century. It will simply wow visitors with its resplendent culture and history. In the thirteenth century, during the regime of King Lalibela, Lalibela or what is the known as the second Jerusalem, was built. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of eleven monolithic churches hewn out of rock, superb in construction. Intriguingly, the ancient town of Axum is rumoured to have the original Ark of the Covenant.

Addis Ababa is the capital and even touted as capital of Africa, due to it hosting the headquarters of the African Union. The Ethiopian National Museum is located in the city, with the famed exhibit ‘Lucy’ (a replica), a hominid skeleton thought to be at least 3.5 million years old. Rather peculiar to Ethiopia is the fact that it follows the Coptic calendar, which has thirteen months and it also has its own time convention, unlike any other nation.

It is generally safe for travellers and most airlines like South African Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa operate services into the country. Major events held in 2015 include the Ethiopia Summit, which

Kenya is synonymous with the concept of safari - the very word originated in Kenya, meaning ‘journey’ in Kiswahili – and is a bustling East African

metropolis and its tourism powerhouse. In fact, Kenya was voted the world’s leading safari destination by World Travel Awards (WTA) in 2015. Unforgettable memories are created as visitors take hot air balloon trips to observe the migration of the wildebeest to the famous Tanzanian Serengeti plains or visit its excellent safari game reserves and national parks. At the same awards,

the Maasai Mara National Reserve won for being Africa’s leading National Park while Finch Hattons was awarded for being Africa’s leading Safari Lodge.

Due to its year-round sunny, Equatorial location it is idyllic for beach fun. Visitors along Kenya’s coral coast can indulge in scuba-diving, snorkelling, sailing, waterskiing, swimming or surfing. Diani Beach scooped Africa’s beach destination at the WTA. Superlatives include having the second-highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya, and the world’s largest

tropical lake and second-largest fresh water lake by surface-area, Lake Victoria.

The greatest bird spectacle on earth can be seen at Lake Nakuru inhabited by up to a million lesser flamingos. Amboseli National Park is located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and famed as being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. Its six properties inscribed on the World Heritage List include three cultural and three natural sites; The Kenya Lake System and Mount Kenya Natural Forest amongst these.

Tourism and technology have always been

the jewels in the Kenyan economic crown, but the economy was deflated somewhat by Ebola in West Africa and terrorism fears. The end of 2015 has seen Kenya’s tourism downturn turning a corner; seemingly rebounding after a three-year slump. Visits by Pope Francis and US President Barack Obama last year elevated its profile. It also attracted and hosted a number of prominent international conferences including the Global Entrepreneurship Summit held in July, generating more exposure and revitalising the economy. The country has also invested in national and regional infrastructure which should be a boon to the industry. To boot, the WTA voted Kenya Airways as Africa’s leading airline in the business-class category.

KICC Kenyatta International Convention CentreThe Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi is an internationally renowned venue and services the East African community. The building’s terracotta exterior deems to reflect traditional African architecture and is within walking distance of several five-star hotels. Its 43-year history has seen it host several international conferences, seminars, exhibitions and summits. Additionally, it has simultaneous interpretation equipment. The Lenana and Aberdare Halls situated on the lower ground floor, are suitable for medium-sized conferences and events. It has ISO 9001:2000 certification.

Morocco evokes enchantment; colourful, aromatic cuisine, exquisite architecture, desert dunes and camel rides,

beaches, mountains and culture. It is in the Maghreb region of North Africa bordering Western Sahara, Algeria and Spain. The Strait of Gibraltar separates mainland Africa and Europe and at its narrowest point the difference is only 14km and thus it is manifest of

Arab, African and European fusion. It is one of only three countries to have Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, is roughly the size of Sweden, while its largest city is Casablanca, with the capital, Rabat. Other amazing cities include Marrakech, Fez and Meknes.

The celebrated Moroccan souk is the place to spice it up! Fragrant bins of spices are ubiquitous and the much-admired cuisine is liberally

flavoured with cumin, saffron and argan. Traditional couscous preparation is complex and therefore, mostly served on Fridays. Another favoured activity is drinking sweet mint tea at cafés, mostly among the men though.

Morocco is distinguished by magnificent architecture and mosques; the impressive Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is a must-see as it is one of the few mosques in Morocco also

open to non-Muslims. Medinas are the old-walled parts of a North Africa town and UNESCO World Heritage Centre has inscribed the Fez medina, described as “the world’s largest living medieval Islamic city”, as well as the Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakesh. Morocco was also named the best golf destination in Africa in 2015, by the World Golf Awards Organization.

Events like Meetings Morocco, the Global Marketer Conference and the Fifth Annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit were all hosted in Morocco. It is generally safe and very easily accessible from Europe and the United Kingdom in particular, as major airlines operate in the country.

Largely unscathed by the Arab Spring of 2011 onwards, the Moroccan economy picked up in 2015 due to an exceptional 2014/2015 agricultural season with it projected to continue on the growth trajectory. There are two caveats though: Firstly, women are advised to dress modestly in this largely Muslim country, and secondly, the ubiquitous snake charmers and touts are to be avoided.

it has shaken free of its shackles and emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Rwanda is safe, stable and boasts remarkable infrastructure.

This land-locked country is nicknamed ‘the Land of Thousand Hills’ due to its mountainous landscapes and fertile valleys. Its world-famous Volcanoes National Park is inhabited by mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Bordered by Uganda and Congo, the park boasts the 4 507 metre-tall Mt. Karisimbi and four other forested volcanoes. Kigali, the nation’s vibrant and intoxicating capital, has a lively leisure and party scene.

For incentive travellers, Rwanda is a verdant paradise famous for its lush forests and the opportunity to see gorillas in the wild. The popularity of gorilla trekking has exploded in recent years, and now consistently appears on travellers’ ‘bucket lists’.

Tanzania is familiar with the unparalleled; it has the tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest free standing mountain in the

world. The awe-inspiring Mount Kilimanjaro is an African climbing paradise and was recently bestowed the prestigious World Tourism Award for being Africa’s leading tourist attraction in 2015. It also has the deepest freshwater lake in Africa, Lake Tanganyika and world’s largest inactive caldera, the Ngorongoro Crater. Recognised as safari destination, Tanzania also has the Selous Game Reserve, the largest game reserve in the Africa and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Twice the size of California; it is astoundingly surrounded by nine other countries and long coastline along the Indian Ocean. Incorporated into Tanzania

is the Archipelago of Zanzibar islands made up of Pemba, Unguja (known as Zanzibar) and Mafia. It affords one the opportunity to book an underwater hotel room (Pemba), enjoy the fresh seafood, swim, and explore the second of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Stone Town, marvelling at its world-renowned doors.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest and most influential city, with Dodoma the capital. Arusha, the gateway to the Northern Safari Circuit is a major contributor to tourism and premier producer of Tanzania’s famed flower industry. The traditional nomads, the Maasai people, also have tremendous presence in the area.

The country literally has a hidden gem; tanzanite is mined exclusively in Tanzania at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and with diminishing supply and an exclusive

location is much rarer than a diamond. Its economy was in an upward trajectory during 2013 and 2014; economists forecast more growth for the future and the World Bank designated it one of the 20 fastest-growing economies in the world. In 2014, one million tourists visited the country and expansion plans are underway to accommodate more. The same year saw tourism overtake gold as its leading foreign exchange earner.

ZAMBIASOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGY MEETS NATURAL BEAUTY

The energetic pace of business in Zambia belies the verdant natural beauty of this landlocked country. Zambia is hardly new

to the business-events world, as business travellers have been flocking to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls for decades. But the emerging business hub of Lusaka is steadily growing its market share in this vibrant

Lusaka is home to the headquarters of The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and serves as a positive consequence of the

country economic liberalisation, and continues to be among the most fast-developing cities in Southern Africa.

Zambia’s altitude allows the country to experience more pleasant climates than other tropical countries. The high, landlocked country experiences three seasons: cold and dry (May to August), warm and wet (December to April), and
