Congress with wide participants plays a big role in the presentation of the countries that can not be expressed with numerical values.

Just at the beginning of the congress tourism, our country aims to increase its market share in this field with conscious and coherent policies which it applies recently. As the ministry, we try to highlight the congress tourism in the world and evaluate best with effective marketing and presenting strategies. With its unique history of 8,500 years and rich natural and cultural assets İzmir is one of the first cities in Turkey where the tourism movement started. By reason of being an harbor city it is the center of the business tourism, with its hot spring resorts in Balçova known as Agamemnon thermal springs since Antiquity and Çeşme it is the heart of the health tourism and with its Artemis Temple that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Antiquity, the House of Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St. John and the three of the Seven Churches mentioned in Bible, namely Ephesus, Smyrna and Pergamon, it is the center of faith tourism.

In addition to its sea, sun and the sand type of activities İzmir is the first city in Turkey that presents the opportunities of culture tourism with its museums at the center and in Bergama, Çeşme, Ödemiş, Tire and Selçuk districts and the ancient cities of Ephesus and Pergamon. Kadifekale, the Velvet Castle, and the Smyrna Agora which have survived up to date, the Kemeraltı Bazaar which has its unique structure, the mosques, churches, synagogues, caravanserais and monumental fountains are the main places of interest at the city center.

With its soft climate, touristic towns including Dikili, Foça, Urla, Karaburun, Çeşme, Seferihisar, Gümüldür and Selçuk and coastline of 629 km. İzmir is one of the cities that offers the best opportunities for coastal tourism as well.

İzmir, with its deep rooted history of 8500-years, has cradled different civilizations whose origins can still be traced today İzmir aiming to properly invest this important heritage, started to take its long deserved place among the well known cities of the world.

İzmir has the high capacity to outstand in every field and be the centre of attraction. It is one of the most important commercial regions with its free trade zone, industrial zone and harbour. Favouring cultural tourism with its deep rooted history and antique civilizations; belief tourism with its hosting of different beliefs, the House of Virgin Mary, synagogues and churches; thermal tourism with geo-thermal resources and facilities; eco- tourism with its sun and natural beauties İzmir is a compatible metropolis for convention tourism with its high quality yet cosy facilities and year round fairs and conferences.

Maybe the most important of all, İzmir is a centre of attraction mainly for its warm-hearted, smiling and welcoming people. At the İzmir Fair Area, various conferences, symposiums and 35 fairs per year are organized by IZFAS and other organization companies.

As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic said, ‘Organize fairs and congresses in this city’, the 77th International Fair of İzmir; will be organized in 2008. ‘MARBLE Natural Stone and Technologies Fair’, the 2nd biggest fair of the world, opens İzmir to the globe and contributes to the economy by introducing the producers to the world market.

İzmir, with its well known fair tradition will multiply its success when the fair area near the Free Zone in Gaziemir will be completed and ready to serve. By realizing the world’s greatest organization EXPO 2020 in İzmir, the city will leap faster to progress and take the place it deserves.

Turkey is pointed at as the new address of EXPO because of its European features, its fastest growing economy of the world, entrepreneurship, young population, colorful cultural mosaic and model role among Muslim countries with its secular democracy.

Following the founder of the Turkish Republic Atatürk’s principle, ‘Peace at home, and peace in the world!’ our country has always been the guarantee of peace on the geography it is located. We as the Metropolitan Municipality of İzmir, with our projects focus to increase the living standards of the population by giving them equal opportunities and aiming a cleaner and healthier city.

We are forming the brand city of the future. We deeply wish to realize EXPO 2020 in İzmir which will be an important leap for the young Republic of Turkey in the 21st century. With the strong belief in hosting EXPO 2020, we hope and wish to welcome you all in İzmir for EXPO 2020.

In congress tourism, which is a special kind of tourism, much importance is attached to destination, as is the case with all the other types of tourism. İzmir, with its history dating back 8500 years and its climate marked by 300 sunny days as well as its unique historical and natural richness is one of the most special destinations of the Aegean region. Because of these properties, İzmir has been named “the Beautiful city of İzmir” for centuries. However, congress tourism also requires some characteristics that are different from other types of tourism. There is need for sufficient bed capacity, easy access from all around the world, high-quality infrastructure and high-quality congress centres. With the increasing number of hotels, its renewed airport, the possibility to fly over 50 places around the world as well as the congress centres that will be open to tourism, İzmir meets these criteria. We are starting a new period in congress tourism in our city as the İzmir Congress and Visitors Bureau Corp. (CVB), adding to all these qualities our enthusiasm as well. We want to get a share from congress tourism as İzmir, which is one of the cities where tourism first started in Turkey. The reason for this desire is that congress tourism is gaining much popularity in the tourism sector, comprised of billions of people. In congress tourism, which is developing both in our country and around the world rapidly, there is a new ambitious actor, which is İzmir. Just as cruise tourism, a more boutique type of tourism that our city has set as a goal to be good at, instead of mass tourism, we have also determined congress tourism, comprised of participants with a high level of income, as a goal for our city. Congress tourism also overlaps exactly with the vision “Tourism 12 Months A Year” we have decided on for İzmir. We want to introduce our city to you, the distinguished members of the sector as the Congress and Visitors Bureau of İzmir as our city is emerging as a new destination determined to be included in congress tourism. We would especially like to emphasise that we would be ready to give you all the support you need in the case that you communicate with İzmir CVB about either the issues presented in this guide or anything about congress tourism. We would be glad to host you in the beautiful city of İzmir in new congresses. Best Regards,

the city on the Pagos Mound, today’s Kadifekale.

AlsancakAlsancak district is the area for those who do not want to go far from the port. On the other hand it is the most crowded residential quarter. With its elegant and exquisite shops Alsancak offers favorable shopping centers including Turkey and the World’s top stores. Besides shopping in Alsancak one may find the opportunity to eat any kind of cuisine in stylish restaurants, cafes and brasseries.

Kordonboyu (the coastline area) is in Alsancak. The nice view has been the theme of many poems and lyrics throughout history. It is the place to visit with its blue

bay, green coastline, sunset and the ships hurriedly coming to the bustling port and to disembark their passengers and welcome new passengers.

Güzelyalı - GöztepeWalking west from Konak you will reach the coast of Güzelyalı a district with a crowded population. The walking and biking lanes, restaurants and cafes are ideal places to enjoy the sea breeze.

The world famous musician Dario Moreno’s house is converted into a museum. Tarihi Asansör, at the end of

the street provides great scenery from its restaurant and café.

Bayraklı - Karşıyaka - Bostanlı

This is the place where İzmir settled for the second time in history and is located on the northeast of the İzmir Bay. Today the area is being transformed to a business quarter.

Downtown Karşıyaka is filled with remains of old manor and symbolic modern apartments. The area is just like its name, located on the opposite coastline of İzmir. Karşıyaka formally known as Cordelio still helps us remember the past through the remains of the old manors. Karşıyaka Bazaar is always crowded with people and alive with nice shops, cafes and restaurants. As you go down the coastline you will first reach Bostanlı , an old residential quarter with old trees and manors on tiny streets.

BucaBuca is a student quarter. The main campus of Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi (Dokuz Eylül University) established in 1982 is situated here. The huge statue of the world famous Mevlana, the symbol of love, peace and friendship, greets the visitors in Buca. His monumental statue is the third biggest statue of the word with its 160 m height from the sea level.

BornovaThe majority of the quarter is students. It hosts Ege Üniversitesi (Ege University) which was established in 1955.

The beautiful architecture of the manor and the gardens of the Levantine who lived in the region before the Republic bring the past to the present. Combined with the modern structure of the quarter these features mark its typical identity.

BalçovaThe district provides opportunities for leisure and vacation, thanks to its thermal water and services, modern malls and shopping centers.

The Agamemnon Spring was famous throughout history. After the siege of Troia, Agamemnon, the

Greek king brought his wounded soldiers to the thermal springs of Balçova where they were cured. The luxury hotels on the thermal grounds give healing and wellness services to their guests. The end of the coastline from Balçova is called İnciraltı and is famous for its fish restaurants. It is the best spot providing fresh and tasty fish for seafood consumers.

With a history stretching back 3000 years and bearing traces of the Ionians, Cesme, at the most westerly tip of Turkey, is surrounded on three sides by the Aegean Sea. Cesme is a town packed with historical gems, a town founded by the Ionians around 1100 BC as part of the 12 cities of the Ionian League. Named after Cesme, known as “Cysus” during the time of the Romans, the Sisus Hotel is proud to welcome guests and to take care of their every need in a highly professional manner.

Located by Dalyanköy yacht marina on the Cesme peninsula covering an area of 6000 square meters, the Sisus Hotel brings together modern architecture and the natural beauty of the region. Cesme is a melting pot of many cultures and carries traces of many civilizations. The Sisus Hotel represents the melding of Eastern and Western motifs, the melding of modern concepts with the characteristics of the ancient gods of Dionysus and Apollon. Dionysus was the great Olympian god of wine, pleasure and festivity. Apollon, the ideal of manly beauty, was the god of poetry and song.

A famous painting of the Goddess Semele decorates the lobby. Guests are welcomed by a large lobby that incorporates an exclusive atrium, with specially designed furniture, marble floors and soft carpets and by the exquisite melding of Eastern and Western motifs. The hotel lobby is decorated with white fabrics in the furniture. White is used in large amount as the base color of the lobby to highlight purity and spotlessness creating an atmosphere of complete tranquillity and comfort. habitants, and lifestyles of the cities and removing their locality. It is a network joined by the towns and cities, which do not want to become one of the homogenous locations shaped by globalization but which want to take their place on the world stage by preserving their local identity and characteristics.

Cittaslow is to make the cities consider their important and unique features and develop strategies to preserve these features. It is a way that the texture, colour, music, and story of the cities are experienced in harmony by the city-dwellers and the visitors at a speed that they can enjoy.

It is to share our local crafts, tastes, and arts with our children and guests in order to ensure that they are not only of interest to older people. Use of clean and renewable energy sources, which are not harmful to the environment and people, is encouraged in the cities that are the members of Cittaslow.

HISTORICAL PLACES

Hellenistic SmyrnaSmyrna is the ancient city located at a central and strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Thanks to its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence. The ancient city is located at two sites within modern İzmir, Turkey. The first site, probably founded indigenously, rose to prominence during the Archaic Period as one of the principal ancient Greek settlements in western Anatolia. The second, whose foundation is associated with Alexander the Great, reached metropolitan proportions during the period of the Roman Empire. Most of the present-day remains date from the Roman era, the majority from after a 2nd century AD earthquake.

HISTORICAL PLACES

İzmir was a leading center of commerce, art and culture in ancient times. Ancient İzmir was founded on an island of thousand square meters to the northeast side of the bay.

Excavations were started in 1948 by Ord. Prof. Dr. Ekrem Akurgal on Höyük now called Tepekule, these excavations are currently continuing under the direction of Prof. Dr. Meral Akurgal.

The majority of the population lived in the surrounding villages where there were fields, olive trees, vineyards and Stone and ceramic workshops. They earned their livelihood from agriculture and fishing.

The main structure of the city was the Athena Temple is dated back to 8th century BC. The years between 650-546 BC marked the brightest period of ancient İzmir. It was during this period İzmir began to be involved in the Mediterranean trade; the excavation of artifacts from Phoenicia, Cyprus, Near Asia and Mediterranean offer abundant proof of the situation.

The oldest paved road of the Ionian civilization was found in ancient İzmir. The old civilian architectural artwork was a monumental fountain built in the first half of the 7th century BC.

The people of ancient İzmir produced the most beautiful examples of pottery and these, together with carved monumental statues were exported.

The city was invaded and destroyed by the Lydian King Allyates in 600 BC although the citizens soon rebuilt their temple and houses. However with the Persian attack in 546 BC. the bright period come to an end. Although the Athena Temple was abandoned in 546 BC the people continued to live in ancient İzmir for the next 200 years.

The growth in population gave rise to the establishment of new İzmir at the slopes of the Pagos hills around 300 BC.

HISTORICAL PLACES

Yeşilova Höyük Yeşilova Höyük is the oldest settlement area in İzmir. Before it was discovered in 2003, İzmir’s history was believed to be 5000 years old, but after the discovery of Yeşilova and the findings from the excavations, İzmir earned the reputation as one of the oldest settlement in Western Anatolia.

The mound settlement, located 0,80 m under Bornova is surrounded by mountains except for its western side leaning towards the sea. Nothing else than late Roman ceramic was found on the surfaceof the 3- 4 m mound.

The mound is in the middle of the Bornova plain at the intersection of Gökdere and Manda creek. The 200-300m settlement area is at a 4- 5 km. distance from the present settlement.

The cultural history of İzmir has had to be re-defined in the light of the discoveries of Yeşilova Höyük. It becomes more plausible to advance that the ancient culture of İzmir had been shaped by residents who had lived some 8000-9000 years ago, rather than by those who inhabited the Bayraklı Höyük as of the 3rd millenium B.C. Yeşilova Höyük is the birth-place of İzmir, and Bornova plain constituted the habitat of early settlers for a few thousand years. The two adjacent mounds of Bornova plain (Yeşilova and Yassıhöyük) initiated sedentary life in İzmir, and sedentarization gained a further impetus later with the Old Smyrna mound dating from the 3rd millenium BC. The culture had developped on the basis of all of these sites.

LEISURE AND INCENTIVE BOUTIQUES

Kızlarağası Inn is one of the meeting points of İzmir. The construction of the inn, built by Kızlarağası Hacı Beşir Ağa, started in 1744 and was finished in 1745.

The main entrance of the inn, located in Yemişçiler and Halim Ağa Bazaar at the back of the old Harbour Castle opens to the Keresteciler Sokağı. Today it is 871 street.

The inn filling an important gap at the time it was built, is one of the rare artworks of Ottoman architecture in İzmir. Kızlarağası inn has a square form like other inns. Traditionally there should be a fountain and a pool in the middle of the wide rectangular courtyard of the building. Today they don’t exist.

The inn has two floors like all-long distance inns. People stayed and slept in the upper rooms opening to the gallery while the ground floor was just the opposite of the simple and plain atmosphere of the upper floor. Here were the camels and their loads, the rooms for the merchants and their servants, shops where the goods were unloaded and marketed along with the bargaining people.

Since the inn was closed to the harbor, it was always lively. The inn functioned as a stock market for a period of time and this was intensely practiced especially in the shops facing the inner courtyard.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, due to the effects of technology causing changes in transportation and the moving of economic life from one place to another from time to time Kızlarağası Han has gradually lost its importance.

After the overnight stays were abandoned, the inn became a place where only goods were unloaded and stored.

In 1993, General Director of Foundations authentically restored Kızlarağası Inn which now is a tourist bazaar. You can find different handicraft products, handloom carpets and rugs, leather clothes, silver jewellery, handmade soil products, all sort of antiques and different souvenirs such as natural stones, moreover, you can take a rest, and breathing the mystique air in the tea garden inside the courtyard.

LEISURE AND INCENTIVE BOUTIQUES

The Elevator was built in 1907, by Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu, a jewish businessman in İzmir, to facilitate access to Halirıfatpaşa at the top of Mithatpaşa Caddesi. The first and unique elevator of Turkey was bought by merchant Şerif Remzi Reyent for İzmir in 1942. There is a similar elevator in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Memories of the time when the elevator was run by a resident named Josepho Polombo are still cherished by the surviving habitants. Avram Ventura, the author from İzmir, mentions this period as ”the primary feature of the elevator was that it worked with water. On the left of the building entrance, stood the engine room of the system and on the right was the little room where Josepho, who ran the elevator for years, used to sit. The cabin of the elevator was like a small room with interfacing doors.

On both sides were wooden benches for four or five people to sit. Josepho would wait a little while trying to attract pedestrians on the way, before running the elevator. To go down with the elevator we had to ring the bell outside, for him to send the elevator. Once in the cabin we had to shout or tap our feet on the floor of the cabin for Josepho to run the elevator. We watched the view of the bay through the windows of the elevator as it descended slowly”. The lift was used in spite of slow pace. “ Because” says Ventura and adds: “It was

not easy to reach Halil Rıfat Paşa at the beginning of the century. You had to choose between a long way to walk and 155 stairs to climb. Both alternatives were impossible for the jewish who wanted to go to the Synagogue above.”

The most precious place of the cityThe elevator was donated to the Municipality in 1983. The mechanism was converted to electricity in 1985. Later it was decided to restore it as a “culture, art and leisure center”. The Historical Lift, with its mystic Middle Age ambiance and renaissance figures, was restored in 1992. The same year, 302 street, stretching vertically from Mithatpaşa Street to the elevator, was named Dario Moreno, after the world famous artist who lived there. His house was restored also.

The most precious structure of İzmir, the elevator with its scenery, history, unique features, and elegant architecture, functions as a transport means of the metropolitan municipality management and houses three managements. The elevator restaurant is preferred by business people and statesmen; the terrace café is a point of attraction with its scenery of İzmir while the Bar is popular among the younger generation.

ÇeşmeÇeşme, originally a local beach getaway for İzmirians, has now also become a popular summer destination for Istanbul’s elite. Despite rapid development, much of the town retains its provincial feel, even if you have to sometimes travel off the beaten path to find it. The location leaves the town exposed to constant winds, making it a hot spot for surfing and windsurfing.

Çeşme is on a bay encircled by small towns that are becoming destinations unto themselves. Dalyan is on the northernmost tip of the bay, while the surfer’s paradise, Alaçati, is southeast of Çeşme. Ilica, directly south of Alaçati, is Çeşme’s most popular (and closest) neighboring beach town and the first one you’ll arrive at if coming from İzmir.

Hierapolis - DenizliHierapolis is an example of how long the magical springs of Pamukkale have cast their spell on civilizations. The ruins that can be seen today date from the time of the Roman Empire, but there are references to a settlement here as far back as the 5th century BC. Because the sights are spread over about ½ km (¼ mi), prepare for some walking. Between the theater and the Pamukkale Motel are the ruins of a Temple of Apollo and a bulky Byzantine church. The monumental fountain known as the Nymphaion, just north of the Apollo Temple, dates from the 4th century AD. Near the northern city gates is another indication of the town’s former popularity, a vast necropolis(cemetery) with more than 1,000 cut-stone sarcophagi spilling all the way down to the base of the hill.

The stone building that enclosed Hierapolis’s baths is now the Pamukkale Museum with a fine display of marble statues found at the site.

Cultural interactions between tens of civilizations living on this earth, geographical conditions, blessing presented by the nature and the most important of all is olive oil… Here it is! The factors shaping İzmir’s cuisine.

Olive oil has been used in İzmir’s cuisine since antique ages. The most important evidence of that is the ‘Olive oil workshop’, stated in Klazomenai Ion antique city in Urla and the oldest sample of olive oil factories in the world. When the case is that, the taste of the dish is very delicious and especially of herbal food.

The culture of cooking with olive oil and herbals occurred in Greek Islands of Aegean and Anatolian coast side and it developed with mutual cultural exchanges. At the end of this cultural exchange, dish has been cooked with a great amount of consumed olive oil, herbals and vegetables for centuries. We all know that people living in these districts are all very healthy, live long and get rarely sick.

Many vegetable, fish, grapes, vine, olives, olive oil and Aegean meal have the features of strengthening the body, natural protection against the diseases and even being cure for some diseases. Aegean cuisine has the dish cooked by using olive oil and herbals that is not known in other districts. It is enough to look at the bazaars to understand Aegean cuisine. These bazaars are rich in terms of vegetable and herbals especially in spring and autumn. Most of these herbals can be eaten as a salad by adding olive oil and lemon. Some can be roasted and even adding eggs on, it can be cooked in

frying pans.

Besides fruit, yoghurt, milk, egg, different olives, some dried vegetables, tomato sauce, cream, different cheeses, butter and homemade jams are the richness of the Aegean bazaars.

Izmır’s cuisine is mainly composed of sea food. Barbun fish, octopus- squid, perches, and gilthead bream are transformed into watering delicacies in Izmır. Shrimp, sea urchins, cidonnia are also prepared very well.

You may taste delicacies unique to the Aegean region in the fish restaurants that line the Kordon, Inciraltı, Narlidere, Çeşme and Foça districts. (especially onion piyaz, grilled perches with olive oil and lemon, or baked levrek with black paper carrots, potatoes and onions)

Authentic Flavours: Izmır and its surroundings are not only rich in sea food but also in a mixture of Aegean, Mediterranean, and Anatolian dishes. The vegetation cover and the variety of ethnic groups are the main reason for this rich mixture. Tere soup, Tarhana soup, Keşkek, Zerde, Izmır meat balls, Ödemiş kebab, Tire meatballs, Boyoz ( a king of Jewish Pastery), Papaz yahnısı, roast beef, Mücver, tomato soup, kol böreği (pastry), Gerdan desert, Tel kadayıf and Radıka Salad are some of Izmır’s famous dishes. We advice you to try some of these authentic dishes.

Kumru and Gevrek: Kumru is a kind of sandwich originating from çeşme and sold 24 hours a day in buffets. Gevrek is a king of ring shaped short bread covered in sesame seeds. These are two of Izmırs delicacies. While visiting Izmır, try breakfast at one of the ferryboat stations or at one of the cafes around. Ask for a glass of hot Turkish tea, some Bergama (pergamon) tulum cheese and some Gevrek. You will enjoy this cheap and healthy breakfast in the serene morning silence of Izmır.

Speaking of Bergam Tulum cheese, it is solid, a little salty and very tasty. When passing through Bergama dont hesistate to buy a few kilograms of this delicious cheese.

Çöp Şiş: Izmır also has a large variety of Kebabs, pides and other authentic dishes. Located close to the Alsancak Cumhuriyet (republic) Square “Topçu’nun yeri” restaurant and the restaurants in Selçuk are the centres for this dish. You should definitely try them!

International Flavours: Izmır is a very modern and cosmopolitan city so of course you will be able to find various international restaurants here. Chinese, Italian and French restaurants await you in Alsancak and Karşıyaka.

Fast Food: ıf you prefer fast food you can find several branches of Mc Donalds, Burger King and Dominoes all over town.

Turkey’s World Brand: RakıThe popular and beloved drink of the Mediterrean Rakı’s, motherland is Turkey. Although France, Italy, Spain and Greece all have Rakı, the Turkish Rakı is a whole different experience. Only produced in Izmır-Çeşme and made from grape alcohol, the Turkish Raki is popularly known as “lions-milk”.

However there is a rule for drinking this Lions milk. Even though it is mixed with water, it still quite strong (40-50% alcohol) This fact is also reminded in a Turkish proverb which states “drink carefully cause it doesn’t

sit as calm inside you as it does in the bottle”.....

For this reason, come along and let us show you how to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of Rakı. We will try to teach you the art of drinking lions milk!

How to drink Rakı?Rakı should not be taken all at once like taquilla. It is to be consumed sip by sip. The right way to consume Rakı is to first a sip of Rakı then a bite of some appetizer or ordeauves. The best appetizer with rakı is white cheese and melon.Olive oil and yogurt appetizers from the Turkish cuisine are also good with Rakı. Fried fresh beans, aubergine, peppers (with yogurt and garliced tomato sauce), wrapped grape leaves stuffed with rice, stufeed peppers, bakla with yogurt, antichoke with bakla, Imam bayıldı, torator, fish, fava and any other type of salad can be consumed with rakı.Rakı is also good with kebabs (shish kebab, doner etc..) or other authentic Turkish dishes like çiğköfte (raw meatballs)

Rakı can be consumed with sea food. There is a Turkish saying the goes “Rakı, Roka Çupra” meaning raki, green veggie and fish.Stay away from deserts and fruits after rakı. Alcohol becomes suger in the blood and there is no need more.Rakı is mainly consumed in Meyhanes (wine-houses). İn Izmır’s authentic Meyhanes they also provide the appertizers to go with the drink. In addition with the traditional Turkish music played here you will sip your rakı slowly with pleasure.A final advice: wait for after sunset before taking Rakı. Drinking it at the right time and the right place is always best, because like i told you before this is the Turkish national drink so “drink carefully cause it doesn’t sit as calm inside you as it does in the bottle”!.

The Ayavukla Church that was built by the Greek Orthodox Community in the second half of the 19th century is known as the only Greek church that survived the 1922 fire, which was an important event in the history of İzmir. The structure started to serve as the Asar-ı Atika Museum to exhibit the antique artefacts regarding İzmir and the surrounding area with the directive of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on 14 February 1924. Following this, it was made into an opera practice hall by the Ministry of Culture. The building was evacuated because of the fire that it went through and for a while was desolate.

The structure, which was the property of the Treasury of Finance before was declared as a “Cultural Heritage that ought to be Under Protection”. The Structure was then transferred onto the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality by the General Directorate of the National Rental Office. The church was also restored with the restoration work started in 2009 and was added to the city. The third press museum of Turkey after the ones in İstanbul and Bursa also opened for service in the extension part near the building. The Ayavukla Church joined the cultural and artistic life in İzmir with the “Des Equlibres” Concert that took place as part of the 25th International İzmir Festival in 2011.

There is a 120-seat conference room, a meeting hall, an educational room a game room and a library in the 3-storey Çiğli Art Centre constructed on a 1.219 m2 area in the Büyük Çiğli Şirintepe Neighbourhood.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the İzmir Opera (Le Grand Theatre de Smyrne) enthusiastically welcomed a performance by famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt during one of the brightest periods of İzmir’s cultural life. Sadly, a fire in 1922 destroyed the İzmir Opera together with many other important buildings in İzmir. However, the French Consulate-General building next door was luckily saved and served French citizens in the Aegean region for many years. Cultural events are now hosted there, which is a fascinating twist of history for the building. After the building was turned over to the service of the French government on September 7, 1875, it was damaged in an earthquake on August 11, 1904 and then rebuilt. White marble was used in the construction of the new building, which was completed in 1905-1906. The section of this historical building that faces the sea has been transformed into an international art center called the Arkas Art Center, which is now open to art aficionados. Arkas Holding carried out the restoration and upkeep of this historical building, which will continue to be one of İzmir’s landmarks. The Arkas Art Center spreads over quite a large area. The exhibition areas on the first and second floors are being prepared to display examples of Turkish paintings as well as several exhibitions with international significance, including works from the Arkas Art Collection. The first exhibition in the building, which was restored with support from Arkas Holding, features a broad selection of works from the Arkas Collection that were painted by post-impressionist artists.

AIRPORT

ABOUT TAV AIRPORTS HOLDING CO.TAV Airports Holding Co. is a success story written through the accumulation of knowledge, experience and creativity in the field of airport operations, one of world’s most difficult sectors.

TAV Airports Holding Co., which was established in 1997 as a joint venture of the Tepe and Akfen Groups, has consistently completed its construction projects rapidly. TAV grew into a success story in its sector within a very short period of time, becoming a global brand through its accumulation of knowledge, highly qualified human resources and cutting-edge technologies in both airport construction projects and airport operations, a completely new field. In line with the targets it set for itself, TAV reorganized in 2006 by separating its “operations” and “construction” activities into TAV Airports Holding Co. and TAV Construction. After this reorganization TAV Airports Holding Co. staged a public offering of its shares in February 2007. TAV continues to add new achievements to its successful activities every year and works hard to represent Turkey in the best light. TAV Airports operates the Istanbul Atatürk, Ankara Esenboğa Airport Domestic and International Terminal, İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal and Antalya Gazipaşa Airports in Turkey. It also operates the Tbilisi and Batumi Airports in Georgia, Monastir Habib Bourgiba and Enfidha Airports in Tunisia and Alexander the Great and St. Paul the Apostle Airports in Macedonia. İZMİR ADNAN MENDERES AIRPORT INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL/MAIN FEATURESThe genial and hospitable terminal of the Aegean Region: İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal

İzmir, the third largest city in Turkey, in order to represent the region in the international arena in the best manner and add a new dimension to the tourism and commercial volume of the Aegean Region with the İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal. Nicknamed “The Pearl of the Aegean,” İzmir hosts thousands of tourists every year. Due to its periphery, which also has great tourism potential, İzmir is determined to proceed

on the way to becoming a tourism destination and a brand name. The İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal, constructed under the “build-operate-transfer” model of construction and operation, was completed eight months ahead of schedule and opened in September 2006. The terminal occupies a total of 108,000 meters square. TAV Airports Holding Co. uses cutting-edge technologies in its terminal operations at the Adnan Menderes Airports International Terminal, providing uninterrupted service 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. It is one of the highest quality terminals in Europe with up-to-date architecture; ease of passenger flow and top flight service quality. Its architectural quality has already been recognized with 2006 TUSCA (Turkish Structural Steel Association) and 2007 ECCS (European Steel Design) first place awards.

Serves approximately five thousand passengers and 45 flights per day...

The İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal serves an average of 40-45 flights and approximately five thousand passengers every day. During peak season the number of passengers per day rises to 10 thousand while the number of arriving and departing aircraft rises to 70-80. The terminal provides services to nearly 85 airline companies from all over the world and is connected to 121 destinations in 49 countries. Adnan Menderes Airport, the destination of 100 airline companies, is equipped with highly developed aviation technologies such as the CUTE automation system, which connects international airlines to one another through common software, saving passengers the need to re-load luggage during transit flights. The luggage handling system automatically sorts five thousand pieces of luggage per hour. The EDS (Explosives Detection System) used in Adnan Menderes Airport automatically scans the luggage of every departing passenger based on a six-phase, 100% luggage scanning system. In addition, with the BRS (Baggage Reconciliation System), passenger and luggage safety is ensured through a second control by matching the information on the loading of the luggage and information on passengers boarding the aircraft.

PORTS

İZMİR ALSANCAK PORTThe Port of İzmir Alsancak is on the delta plain of the Kizilcullu River (known in ancient times as the Meles) about 40 kilometers southeast of the Turkish Port of Aliaga. The old citadel of the ancient Port of İzmir is located atop Mount Pagus south of the modern commercial center. Located on the site of ancient Smyrna, the classical Greek city-state, the Port of İzmir is the capital of İzmir Province, and it contains ten separate and unique metropolitan districts.

The General Directorate of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) is the port authority for the Port of İzmir. Being as the third

largest city in Turkey and an important business center as well as the urban center of a large industrial and agricultural region, the Port of İzmir plays a vital role in the country’s economy and export trade. The Port of İzmir handles all types of cargo, and is connected with Turkey’s rail and highway networks.

The remarkable growth of cruise tourism to İzmir, which has seen visitor numbers increase from just 3,000 in 2003 to 504,921 in 2011, dates back to a decision made by İzmir Chamber of Commerce in 2004 to launch its “Tourism for 12 months” campaign. In 2012 600,000 visitors are expected from 234 cruise calls. It is obvious that over the long term our present port will not respond to exigencies of cruise tourism in our city. Therefore a new project has commenced, “İzmir Alsancak Cruise Port” for the construction of a new cruise terminal, which will serve our goal of “3 million passengers” in a shorter time. İzmir, with its new cruise terminal will be a rising star in the Mediterranean

Ferry ServicesWith the aim of achieving unity in public transportation, the number and the service frequency of the Bay ferries have been increased and a smoother, easier type of transportation has been introduced. (For instance, the service intervals between Karşıyaka, Bostanlı and Konak have been decreased to 20 minutes.) The stations have been rearranged and presently there are services provided form 8 stations, namely the ones in Bostanlı, Karşıyaka, Bayraklı, Alsancak, Pasaport, Konak, Göztepe and Üçkuyular.
