Pastor’s Perspective
Brothers and Sisters,
On this final Sunday of Advent, we light the fourth and final candle of our Advent wreath and turn towards Christ’s imminent
birth. As in years past, the Advent journey went by quickly. Hopefully, you were able to find comfort, peace, and hope by par cipa ng in our candle‐ligh ng services and honoring our Blessed Mother. Your presence online and in‐person has given me, my brother priests, and our parish staff much hope. Please con nue to share your family photos on social media using the hashtag #RedlandsCatholicsAdvent so others will experience hope and joy, too!
There is always something special about the celebra on of Christmas... so much joy and peace permeates this sacred season. This last year, we have faced so many trials and adapted to numerous changes because of the pandemic; and, changes that are impac ng our typical Christmas tradi ons and gatherings. This Christmas will be different, but it also has more poten al for joy. Remember the story about God coming to Elijah in a whisper? This happened only a er Elijah endured a great wind that split mountains, an earthquake, and a raging fire. Before that experience, Elijah had feared for his life because all of the other prophets had been killed. Yet, God walked with Elijah, sent angels to minister to him in the wilderness, and encouraged him in the whisper; and, a renewed Elijah was able to take up his mission again with courage.
We need to remember to expect the unexpected with God. Often times we like to try to fit God into a box, preferring God
to be at work in a manner that is fi ng to our plans and accord‐ing to our preferences. Although that may be our choice, God chooses to act in unexpected ways. A er all, wasn’t the promise of the Messiah in the form of a baby boy born of a virgin unex‐pected? This certainly surprised and confused those who were awai ng an all‐powerful King! Yet, Mary and Joseph were able to accept this unexpected and surprising plan of God despite the challenges and hardships that awaited them. Their faith and trust in God’s generous love and wisdom enabled them to follow His will, and, He provided for them.
Can we see things through the lens of Mary and Joseph? Can we trust the Creator of the Universe who took on human flesh and became a vulnerable infant out of immense love for each of us? This is the reality of Christmas for which we have been preparing – an unexpected, love‐filled celebra on of life. This year, more than any other year, let us embrace the way of Mary and Joseph by having faith in God’s unexpected plans… “my plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope” (Jer 29:11).
Although Christmas will be different this year, we can trust in the promise of Emmanuel: God IS with us. This week, remind yourself each morning and evening that God loves you, and keep your eyes open for unexpected goodness as you prepare for Christ’s birth.
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel! Fr. Erik Esparza

2 Perspectiva del Párroco
Hermanos y Hermanas,
¡Oh ven, oh ven, Emanuel! Padre Erik Esparza

What effect has the pandemic had on our parish finances? The pandemic restric ons have limited opportuni es for most of us to a end Mass in person. Whether outdoors or indoors, sea ng has been limited to 100 people per Mass, including chil‐dren. This means we welcome less people to onsite worship, and the collec on basket isn’t as full.

Our Blessed Mother Teaches Stewardship In today’s Gospel passage from Luke,
we hear the wonderful words of Our Blessed Mother’s “fiat,” her “yes” to God’s plan:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
A er Mary’s fiat, we read, “Then the angel departed from her.”
Our Blessed Mother was le with a lot of unexplained details about God’s plan for her! Yet, she followed God’s will perfectly. She gave herself and her life fully to God
as a gi . She trusted in her Heavenly Father to guide her at each step, and He did.
Mary was the first disciple. We are called to follow her example as disciples today.
Although we do not know when the pandemic will cease and we may carry anxiety or fear about the details, we have a Blessed Mother who reminds us that
God is with us and is wai ng for our yes to join His plan to make new things possible.
Mary shows us how to live out a faith bigger than fear.
This Christmas, let us resolve to imitate our Blessed Mother
and make our whole life a gift to the One Who has given us everything.
It is the work of a lifetime. But He will give us all the help and strength
we need each day to do it.

“In the beginning was the Word… and the Word became flesh…”
Incarna on… Word becoming Flesh… Christmas... Above quote is from the beginning of the Gospel of St. John.
Come and encounter Love Incarnate with His most beloved apostle...
We are embarking on an in‐depth study of The Gospel of John Star ng: Monday, January 11, 2021, 6:30 ‐ 8:00 PM via Zoom. This weekly study includes a powerpoint and materials that you can read on your own me before and a er Monday evening’s Zoom gathering. We encourage you to join the Zoom gathering ‐ not only to learn, but also to see parish friends and share faith... to encounter Christ and grow in community. About the Study: The first two weeks will consist of a ‘review’ into the world of the New Testament, covering both the theological and the historical developments that influenced the author of the Gospel of John. Throughout this course, you will also learn how the New Testament compliments and fulfills the Hebrew scripture (Old Testament) prophecies and teachings; as well as more about the early origins of the Catholic Church, and how those faith communi es experienced living for Christ. In prepara on for this study, I recommend reading the following books: Introduc on into the New Testament, by Fr. Raymond Brown A Marginal Jew - Volume I, by Fr. John P. Meier (This is a recommenda on, not a requirement.) There is no cost or homework for this study. Just bring your New American Bible to the Zoom sessions. To register for this study, please: Op on 1— Join the group “English Bible Study” on the Flocknote app Op on 2— Visit: www.theholynameo esus.org/bible‐study Op on 3— Call or Email Jesse (see below)

King David wished that the ark of God might have a more perma‐nent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a kingdom where Jews and Gen les alike would be welcome.
Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing mes‐sage. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35).
Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Fourth Sunday of Advent Monday: Winter begins Wednesday: St. John of Kanty Thursday: The Vigil of Christmas Friday: The Na vity of the Lord (Christmas) Saturday: St. Stephen; First Day of Kwanzaa
FEAST OF FAITH: Gathering When Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in 2008, tens of thousands gathered in Yankee Stadium to celebrate the Eucharist with him. What made them different from all the other excited crowds who have assembled there through the years? When they began to sing together, to listen together, to pray together, they ceased to be a crowd, and became a liturgical assembly. It was not where they were but what they did that set them apart.
The Gospels speak of many instances when Jesus prayed alone to his Father. But Jesus also put a special value on communal prayer. “Where two or three are gathered together in my name,” he told his disciples, “there am I in the midst of them” (Ma hew 18:20). Jesus gave his own mission to his followers, sending them forth to do everything he did: to heal, to teach, to proclaim the kingdom. Jesus wants us to meet God in and through each other. So the Chris an community con nues to gather, Sunday a er Sunday. When we get up on Sunday morning and come to Mass (whether in person or online) we respond to Jesus’ invita on, and we express our trust in his promise that whenever we come together, He comes, too.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
