ably is forced to hand over all ofthe West Bank. How events thou-sands of kilometers away can con-tribute to the helplessness felt byAmerican Blacks defies all logic. But if BLM insists on singing “weshall overcome” with activistsaround the world, why not jointhose protesting the enslavementof the million Blacks inMauritania, Somalia, Eritrea andSudan? Why not link arms withthe dissidents being tortured inNorth Korea or the LGBT’s beingexecuted in Iran? Shouldn’t BLMbe building bridges with the muz-zled women throughout the Islamicworld? And is Syria such an oasisof tranquility that it merits not evena mention in BLM’s literature?
We acknowledge that theJewish-Black “alliance” has beenmore nuanced than some wouldacknowledge. Rabbi Joshua Heschelmay have marched with MartinLuther King, and half the freedomriders were Jewish. But so, too,was the racist Solomon Blatt, speaker of the South CarolinaHouse. Jews may have been morewilling to rent to Blacks inNorthern US cities. They were alsomore likely to be slum landlords,And Louis Farrakhan did, as herepeatedly told progressive Jews, hate “all white people”
We don’t know whether theBLM’s “genocide” accusation reflectsthe views of a few misguided zealotsor is representative of the move-ment’s general membership. Whatwe do know for certain is that thelegitimate aspirations of AmericanBlacks won’t be achieved by endingUS funding and military aid toIsrael. Nor will their grievances beaddressed through marches in soli-darity with Linda Sarsour or by link-ing its website to the rubbish beingspewed out by the BDS movement.
Black Lives MatterHas Lost Its Way
Hannah Jacobs is a sopho-more at Boston University.“Growing up”, she writes, “Judaism,Zionism and social justice comple-mented each other to create some-one who loves Israel, is a strong Jewand cares deeply about the worldaround her”. Her great grandfather, having lived through the obscenityof racism, boarded a bus to join thefollowers of Martin Luther King Jr.marching on the streets ofWashington. Hannah, anxious tofeel as her Black friends feel, andsickened by the repeated shooting ofunarmed Black men, attended ademonstration in support of BlackLives Matter. But the vulgar, repug-nant anti-Semitic activists whostood by her side at the event, andthe subsequent release of the BLMIsrael bashing platform, has left her,and other Jewish liberals and pro-gressives, facing a painful dilemma. How can they continue to be fullpartners with those whose plat-forms are a travesty of politicaljudgement and a disservice to theBlacks they purport to represent?
Black Lives Matter was creat-ed in 2012 following the shooting ofTrayvon Martin and the acquital ofGeorge Zimmerman. The Movementis “a call to action and a response tothe virulent anti-Black racism thatpermeates our society...It affirms thelives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, Black-undocumentedfolks, folks with records, women andall Black lives along the gender spec-trum...It is a tactic to (re)build theBlack liberation movement.”
Somehow, however, BlackLives Matter has concluded, as havegroups such as MoveOn, Code Pinkand Occupy Wall Street, that fu l land equal opportunity for allAmericans can only be advanced ifIsrael stops its perpetuation of “geno-cide” and “apartheid” and p r e -

Lac carLing HoteL:
There is a beautiful hoteljust one hour from Montrealwhich is starting to get a lotof attention from peopleplanning weddings, socialfunctions, meetingsand trade shows. Almostthree years ago Jewish-owned real estate giantOlymbec, along with thePava Corporation, pur-chased the Lac CarlingHotel in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge and went aboutrefurbishing the property. Itis located in theLaurentians, 20 minutesnorth of Lachute and popu-lar year-round for rest andrelaxation, sports andreceptions of all kinds.
“The Lac CarlingHotel was a well-establishedproperty in the 1980s and
90s,” said Robert Libman, speaking on behalf ofOlymbec, where he worksas an architect and on spe-cial projects. “With the vastimprovements we haveundertaken, the property isalready doing very well sim-ply by word of mouth.”
Several million dol-lars has been spent to reno-vate the hotel rooms, thedining hall, bars and com-mon areas. The three-storeycomplex has 100 hotelrooms, including 11 twostorey suites and indoorparking There is 17,000square feet of interior spaceto host the biggest of wed-dings and conferences. The synagoguesinvolved do suggest a “sus-taining level” donation, theaverage amount the syna-gogue needs from eachmember to reach its goalbut in general less than halfthe members actually paydues at the sustaining level. This has created “chal-lenges”. More money maybe coming in from morepeople but the averageannual membership contri-bution has fallen.
It is hard to saywhether “voluntary dues” isthe wave of the future. So
far only 57 synagogues, lessthan 5 percent of the coun-try’s Conservative andReform congregations, haveadopted the concept. Stillstudies suggest that millen-nials are rejecting the oldways. Jack Wertheimer, ahistory professor at theJewish TheologicalSeminary, says that pro-grams like birthright getyoung Jews used to the ideaof no cost or low cost Jewishservices.
“We’re living in a timetoday,” says Wertheimer,

The pay what youcan model appeals to thosewho may be strapped forcash and to those whowant to feel that priceshould not be an objectwhen joining a synagogue.“The process of asking fora dues adjustmentbecomes all about money,“says Adina Frydman, exec-utive director of Synergy, adivision of the New Yorkfederation that advisessynagogues on strategy,“as opposed to ‘you are amember of this congrega-tion and community.’”
Synagogues TrySomething New
With declining syna-gogue membership becom-ing an issue, some non-Orthodox synagogues in theUnited States are tryingsomething new: “voluntarydues.” Some 60 Reform,Conservative andReconstructionist syna-gogues have stopped charg-ing mandatory dues and aretelling congregants thatthey can pay what theywant.

TAMPA’S ICONICJEWISH OWNED RESTAU-RANT: While my family andI stayed in beautiful St.Petersburg on our mostrecent trip to Florida’s GulfCoast, we did make the 30minute drive into Tampa afew times.
Prior to our trip Ibegan to hear many excel-lent stories about Bern’sSteak House (www.bernsteakhouse.com) in Tampa. This is the spot known forperfectly aged steaks, one ofthe largest wine collectionsin the world and an inter-nationally famous dessertroom. These elements havecombined since 1956 toprovide guests with aunique culinary experience.
I must say I cannot recall adining experience quite likethis. The prime steaks arecut to order, vegetables aregrown locally on the Bern'sfarm and sourced from thefinest purveyors, and themenu includes 21 choicesof caviar. Bern’s Jewishfounder, Bern Laxer, wasborn to a Romanian moth-er and Polish father on theLower East Side of NewYork in 1923, and grew upin the Bronx. After servingin World War II, hereturned to New Yorkwhere he pursued a degreein advertising from NewYork University. He methis wife Gert in a copy-righting class and theymarried in 1950. To sup-port them, Bern operated aone-man advertisingagency in the city.
Following a numberof ventures, Bern and Gertended up in Tampa whereBern’s Steak House wasborn. They grew from oneto eight dining rooms andfrom 40 to 350 guest seats.Sadly, Bern passed away in2002. Gert, now retired, visits occasionally whiletheir son, David, carries onthe tradition of runningBern’s Steak House andBern’s Fine Wines andSpirits.
Bern’s waiters trainfor approximately one year, working at every station inthe restaurant. Our serverreviewed the extensivemenu for us and madesome recommendations. Wehad some delicious appetiz-ers and a 22 ounce cut ofChateaubriand as the maincourse. All entrees
