Ryan Sheckler, with a new car that
this lady would probably like to
get her hands on.
Say your spouse was convicted of
embezzling money from a 19-year-old
X-games space age kid. Would you try to
keep below the radar? Or sue the citywhere your spouse was convicted in
hopes of getting money for iPod
speakers and a car? Duh!
Janelle Mercuro is, in simple
terms...flying right
into the center of the
storm.
The Orange
County Register is
reporting that the
wife of Matthew
Mercuro, the San
Clemente man
convicted of
embezzling from
pro-skater Ryan
Sheckler, is suing
the city of
Huntington Beach
to pay for a new car,
legal fees and an
iPod speaker--all of
which she lost
because of the
investigation into
her husband. The
tab comes out to
$15,890.
Writes the
Register's Annie Burris and Jon Cassidy:
"Janelle Mercuro said her car was
towed from private property in San Juan
Capistrano to Huntington Beach in
November and later sold, stripped, and
abandoned. She did not learn that the car
had been towed for 11 days.
She is asking for $7,140 for a new
car, registration, costs of being without a
car, and legal fees.
Mercuro is also asking for $8,400
in legal fees she accrued while trying to
get back personal property including a
computer taken during the police
investigation.
She said she still has not received
her iPod docking station speakers and is
asking that the department reimburse her
$500 or buy her new speakers. She
alleges that the speakers were taken with
a search warrant and given to Sheckler's
father, Randy."
Our closing argument in the
case.... On Jan. 11, Mercuro's husband
was convicted of two felony counts of
grand theft shortly after being accused
of embezzling $365,000. He served 18
days in jail and owes the $150,000 he
said he took from companies owned
by Sheckler while he served as their
CFO. You'd think that after putting his
wife through this whole thing, he
could at least spring to buy her some
iPod accessories.

Most people don't know that
back in 1912, Hellmanns
mayonnaise was
manufactured in England.
In fact, the Titanic was carrying
12,000 jars ofthe condiment scheduled
for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico,
which was to be the next port of call for
the great ship after its stop in New
York. This would have been the largest
single shipment of mayonnaise ever
delivered to Mexico. But as we know,
the great ship did not make it to New
York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank,
and the cargo was forever lost. The
people of Mexico, who were crazy
about mayonnaise, and were eagerly
awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate
at the loss. Their anguish was so great,
that they declared a National Day of
Mourning, which they still observe to
this day.The National Day of Mourning
occurs each year on May 5th and is
known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Much to my surprise, I
came upon a movie
being filmed while
riding my bike on a street near my
home on Friday May 7th, 2010.
Located deep within a
residential neighborhood, it was
shocking to spot bright lights, a
movie camera, generators,
actors and crews at the home.
Pollution is written by and
stars Osa Wallander. Its her
story about growing up
with an abusive, alcoholic
mother. Wallander has been in numerous films and
television shows, from Americas Most
Wanted to Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
The versatile 5-foot-7, blue-eyed
Swedish actress is joined in her latest
movie by 14-year-old Danielle Bessler,
and Carrie Lazar, who plays a social
worker and actually grew up at the
residence near Central Park.
Produced byHollywood veterans James Keitel,
Matt Peterson and Drew Gabreski,
Pollution is directed by Jeffrey
Travis. The Matter Media Studios
production also recently filmed on
the Balboa Pier. Keitel said it is
being edited early this Summer, then
make its debut in a yet-to-be-
determined Film Festival.

Scientists have moved one
step closer to giving menmore responsibility in
preventing pregnancy.University of North Carolina
researchers are beginning trials tosee if ultrasound can serve as a
means of reversible contraception
for men, BBC News reports.Based on the researchers' earlier
work, a blast of ultrasound to thetestes may safely stop sperm
production for six months.
With this contraceptive, menbecome temporarily infertile after
the testes stop producingsperm and all "sperm
reserves" have beendepleted, according to
BBC News.
"We think thiscould provide men with
up to six months ofreliable, low-cost, non-
hormonal contraception
from a single round oftreatment," Dr. James
Tsuruta, the study's leadresearcher, told BBC
News.Researchers hope
this will offer couples an
alternative for birth control."Our long-term goal is to
use ultrasound from therapeuticinstruments that are commonly
found in sports medicine or
physical therapy clinics as aninexpensive, long-term, reversible
male contraceptive suitable for usein developing to first world
countries," Tsuruata said.
A $100,000 grant from theBill and Melinda Gates
Foundation will fund moreclinical trails on this potential
birth control method.

Women to Begin Serving on Navy
Submarines for the First Time... the
finger on the big red button could bear
nail polish...
Women will serve on Navy submarines for the
first time beginning next year, breaking a gender
barrier that goes back to the start of the elite
military program.
Rear Adm. Barry Bruner said during a press
conference Thursday that women will report for
submarine duty by fall of 2011, CNN reported.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the
policy change last month, and Congress took the
required 30 days to review and approve it.
Candidates will be selected from the Naval
Academy, the collegiate Reserve Officer Training
Corps, and officer candidate schools. They will
undergo a 15-month program, including nuclear
power school,
sub training, and
the Submarine
Officer Basic
Course.
T h r e e
female officers will be assigned to eight different
crews of guided missile attack and ballistic missile
submarines. The assignments involve two subs on
the East Coast and two on the West Coast,
according to Navy officials.
Once officers are integrated into the
sub squadrons, female enlisted sailors will
arrive during a second phase in
coming years, CNN reported.
Women joined the
crews of the Navy's
surface ships in 1994.

Just when you thought you'd
smelled it all: Make way for
The White Castle Candle,
which promises to waft the
fragrance of burgers and onions
through your home. Because who
wouldn't want their living space
to smell like a fast-food joint?
Believe it or not, the candle -
- which was introduced in time
for National Hamburger Month,
and is emblazoned with therestaurant's tagline "What You
Crave" --has met with a
somewhat mixed reception."I'm
in the minority of people that
doesn't even have to be high to ea t
White Castle," admits a blogger at
Geekosystem, "and I don't know
if I could handle it." Meanwhile,
over at EW's PopWatch, "...beads
of vomit are flying out of my head
at the mere thought," was the
emphatic reaction. (Tell us what
you really think.)
Varied reactions
notwithstanding, the candle has
been extremely popular.
Extremely. In fact, it sold out on
the White Castle website in one
day (don't worry, we're already
searching for another source andwill keep you updated; in the
meantime, encourage White
Castle to restock!). Perhaps this is
partly because the proceeds for
the candle (which sold for $10) go
to Autism Speaks, the country's
largest autism advocacy group.
White Castle is among several
corporate sponsors
aligned with Autism
Speaks, and has
already raised
hundreds of
thousands of dollars
for the organization
prior to developing
the candle.
So i f anyone
gives you a hard
time about your
s l i d e r - s c e n t e d
abode, you can tell
them it's for a
good cause. And
then crack the
window.

It happened. Were you ready for it?
Recently, Mortgage Rates just hit
their lowest level for all of
2010. Were you ready for it?Mortgage rates have steadily
improved every day for the last
week. This market improvementhas been fueled by a safe haven
rally on US Bonds, including
mortgage-backed securities.
The stock market hasntcompletely regained the trust of
investors after last weeks flash
crash that saw the Dow drop nearly1000 points in mere minutes.
Investors are instead looking to put
their money where they feel it will
be safer. This conservative investingmodel typically leads to a run on
Bonds. And as Ive written before, whats good for Bonds is good formortgage rates.
This most recent bond rally
has been especially good for US bonds. A global skepticism over
equity markets would typically
lead to investment in all bonds.
Ongoing concerns over the Eurofueled by continuing concerns
over Spain, Portugal and
(primarily) Greece have left Europeancountries out of this bond run. One way to
look at it is that the US picked up market
share at Europes expense. The additional
market share means more demand, which
in turn leads to even lower rates. How long will it last? If history is any
indicator, not long. If anyones been
waiting for rates to
improve, the wait is over.
Right now may be the
best time well see totake action on
your home
financing.Footnoted:
The average
rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage
dipped to 4.93 percent this week from 5 percent a week earlier, Freddie Mac
said Thursday. It was the lowest level
since mid-December, when ratesaveraged 4.81 percent.
The drop came as investors
shifted money from risky European

Some Say Su Gois Gong!
O
C DA's office say a man waiting to be extradited from
Canada to face charges for a 1984 slaying in
California apparently committed suicide after
learning his appeal to avoid extradition had been denied.
Orange County prosecutors and Huntington
Beach police report 53-year-old Gerald Su Go
died Thursday in Toronto. He was charged with
murder in a Nov. 14, 1984 killing and attempted
rape of 38-year-old Elizabeth Hoffschneider That
case remains unsolved.
A DNA match in 2005 linked Go to
Hoffschneider's slaying when he was in prison in the
U.S. for an unrelated sexual assault. later deported to
Canada in 2007 when released from prison.
Huntington Beach police started the procedure to
extradite Go for the Hoffschneider case when Go
appealed and it was denied last week.
HB Police say an Internet sting stung an
Orange County man who thought he was
arranging a sexual encounter with a 13-
year-old Huntington Beach girl he met on
Craigslist.com.
Lt. Russell Reinhart reports 38-year-old
Howard Houchen Wang of Mission Viejo was
arrested Tuesday night after he drove to Huntington
Beach for a sexual encounter.
Apparently, Wang was told numerous times that
the person he was communicating with was 13
years old as he continued to try and craft a
sexual relationship.
Wang was booked for investigation of
communicating with a minor with intent to
commit a lewd act, attempted oral
copulation with a minor, sending harmful
material to a minor and other allegations. Good Police work
winged this Wang before it was too late.

Some Say..."HB Council Sticks It to Natural
Gas Users and all local rate payers! A 4-3
vote of the Huntington Beach City Council
seals a new money stream to the City of more than
$1.7 million per year. New agreement with natural
gas provider SoCalGas. increases fee to local
residents (ratepayers) -- some a
lot more than others.
V o i c e
of OC repots:
"For twenty
y e a r s ,
H u n t i n g t o n
Beach enjoyed a
deal with
SoCalGas under
which the city imposes
a one-to-two percent franchise fee on every
monthly bill issued by the utility. The fee was the
result of court settlement in 1990 and, according to
a city staff report, "among the highest in the
SoCalGas territory."
But that deal, which last year generated $1.5
million for the city, expired. And SoCalGas
insisted on a new deal that is more in line with
franchise agreements it has with other cities. The
result would have reduced the franchise fee and
cut revenue to the city by $650,000.
So the city cut the deal approved by council
Monday that essentially passes a portion of the fee
onto ratepayers.
Residents, on average, will pay about 33 cents
per month on a one percent surcharge fee that
winds up in city coffers. Commercial users would
pay, $2.37 per month, industrial users $2.50 per
month. Two "electric generation" users --
companies that take natural gas and convert it into
electricity -- will be paying about $19,000 per
month.
The good news for the city is that the money
flowing into its general fund will go from $1.5
million last year to $1.7 million.
The debate at the dais center on a
presentation by city staff showing that
the amount is enough for four police
officers or four
firefighters. It
could also be
equivocated to
funding for the
library, or the art center.
Councilman Joe Carchio
scoffed at the example, saying
that unless he could be
provided a guarantee that
the money would go towardsaving firefighters and
police officers, he could not
vote for it.
Councilwoman Jill Hardy
downplayed the impact of the surcharge, and
said asking for 33 cents to maintain police services
and library funding in the city was not much.
"We're down to asking people for pennies,"
Hardy said.
But Councilman Don Hansen, who voted
against the
surcharge, said
he wasn't
c o m f o r t a b l e
with the "level
of disclosure"
and said a gas
bill insert was
not enough.
"It's really
an end-around
on the taxpayer
and a backdoor
way of getting
a sweetheart
deal," Hansen
said."

facing all of us today...Responsiveness is crucial to
any level of government -
especially when it is Local!
72% of the total men and women asking for your vote
felt comfortable with the issue enough to let voters /
taxpayers know that they would work for the repeal ofthis Agreement with the Gas Company. And, 84% of
those who actually responded with an opinion stated
emphatically that they would work towards the repeal of
the new agreement if elected.
We applaud the men and women who are running

they don't either listen or let us know how they are

By Christine Rochelle, AOL Jobs
Online jobs are popping up across the web as technology makes it
easier and easier for workers to
conduct business off-site.
Getting a part-time online job wasn't
always easy. With so many scams
claiming to make you thousands of
dollars in just a week or require
participants to start off by making an
investment into the scam, many
workers are understandably hesitant to
find a job online.
Luckily for job seekers, employers
are opening up more and more part-
time positions online so that they have
access to a more diverse applicant pool
and they can save on overhead costs by
hiring people to work off-site. If you're
looking for part-time online job, see if
one of these positions suits you:
1. scial Mdia expFrom car dealers to local
boutiques, nearly every
business is looking for a
social media expert to
Facebook, Twitter and blog
about their business. If you
want to be proactive, brush up
on your social media knowledge
and confront local businesses about
hiring you. With more and more
businesses pulling away from traditional
advertising and unsure how to use social media sites to their
advantage, you can easily sell yourself as a new hire, as long as you
stay on top of your game.
2. edi
Many professionals or even job seekers are constantly looking for
another set of eyes to edit their
new business proposal, cover
letter, or transcript. Editing jobs
pop up all over job boards and
can turn into a steady part-time
job if you continue to network.
3. Bp
With easy-to-use
bookkeeping software available,
more and more businesses are
able to hire part-time
bookkeepers who work from
home. If you're organized and
comfortable with numbers,
bookkeeping for a local business
can turn into a great part-time job
for someone on the prowl for a
flexible work schedule.
4. Daa enyRough financial times
means that administrative
assistant positions are often cut,
even though there is work that still needs to be done, such as
data entry. Working part-time doing data entry for a company
means you'll always have a steady stream of work coming your
way, and it's a great foot in the door.
5. Call Cn Jb
Companies hire part-time workers to run their call centers
from home. Running a virtual call center from your home could
mean anything from telemarketing to customer service hotlines.
Although little experience is required, some companies do look
for employees who are bilingual.

NOT IN THE TRASH
The results are in for
the April 24th e-
waste collection
event held at the Civic
Center. Once again,
community participation
and the amount of e-waste
collected exceeded
expectations by bringing
almost 75,000 pounds of
material! Another event is
being planned for Saturday,
July 24.
E-waste can contain
toxic substances like lead,
cadmium, and mercury that
can contaminate the land, water, and air. In addition to
keeping toxic waste out of
the landfill, there is also
material that can be
processed and reformed
into new products for good
resource management.

U
niversity of Oregon's Justin La Tempa of
Huntington Beach was recently named
Pac-10 Pitcher.
LaTempa was pitched a complete game
one-hit shutout as the No. 15 Ducks defeated
Washington State, 6-0. In his first complete
game in his collegiate career, the former
Huntington Beach High standout recorded a
career-high 10 strikeouts. The senior right-
hander had his no-hitter broken up in the eighth
inning when WSU's Matt Argyroppilos led off
the inning with a shallow double to right field.
LaTempa became the first Oregon pitcher
since reinstatement to throw a complete game
shutout. In addition, it was the first time Oregon
has shutout a Pac-10 opponent since a 3-0
victory at Washington on May 8, 1976. On the
season, he is 4-2 with a 2.64 ERA and 50
strikeouts.
Congrats to Justin from your hometown.

Anew poll looking at the June primary and commissioned
by SurveyUSA (for a number of television stations,
including SF's KPIX) found both the Republican and
Democratic attorney general primaries undecided.
The poll found San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris
leading the zalous Democratic field and State Senator Tom
Harman, R-Huntington Beach, leading his Republican
challengers. Only 22 percent of the 621 likely Democratic voters
indicated support for the career prosecutor, 28 percent -
undecided. Harman -- has two opponents to Harris' five -- and
gathered support from 29 percent of the 548 likely GOP voters,
with 36 percent still undecided.
The bigger picture: Democrats include former Los Angeles
City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo was next in line, at 16 percent.
Former Facebook executive Chris Kelly -- took 11 percent of
likely voters, Assemblyman Ted Lieu, D-Los Angeles, was close
behind at 10 percent. Santa Barbara Assemblyman Pedro Nava
earned eight percent, while Fremont Assemblyman Alberto
Torrico brought up the rear at four percent.
Republicans include Los Angeles District Attorney Steve
Cooley, considered the favorite, trailed Harman by seven points
(22 percent). Attorney John Eastman was at just 14 percent.

One month
into the
M L B
season, two teams
h a v e
sparked the
m o s t
concern about attendance figures Toronto and
Cleveland. The commentators got it right
there are two teams whose attendance numbers
should raise red flags. But theyre not the Blue
Jays and the Indians.
According to figures compiled by
SportBusiness Daily, ten teams five in each
league are experiencing double-digit percentage
losses while only three teams one in the
National League and two in the American League
are enjoying double digit percentage gains
through games of May 11.There are varying reasons why a third of
MLB teams are spotting double-digit losses. The
Mets, Astros, Dbacks and Padres in the NL
werent expected to contend. Ditto for the White
Sox, As, Blue Jays and Indians in the AL. Of
those teams, Toronto and Cleveland are good
baseball markets that were consistently among the
league leaders in attendance when they were
competitive on the field. Toronto once drew 4-million
fans per year and Cleveland held the MLB record for
the longest consecutive game sellout streak until the
Red Sox broke their record. Fans in those cities are
likely to return when the on-field product improves.
The two remaining teams with double-digit losses
are the Rays and Marlins. The Rays attendance is off by
12.7% and the Marlins are off by 14.7 %. The Rays have
the best record in baseball and the Marlins have a young,
talented club that was expected to challenge the Phillies
in the NL East. But fans are staying home in droves.
In addition to talent and high pre-season
expectations, the teams have other similarities. The
Rays and Marlins arguably play in the two worst
facilities in MLB. The Marlins facility wasnt
designed with baseball in mind, and whoever designed
the Raysfacility should lose their professional license.
Even after several renovations totaling tens-of-millions
of dollars, the Trop is an abomination.
The Marlins have a new facility under construction
which will be ready in 2012. But anyone who thinks the
new facility will provide more than a short-term
attendance boost is delusional. Despite being a hotbed for
baseball prospects and college ball, Florida has yet to
prove its a professional baseball market.
The Rays have been working on a new facility for
years. The team is locked
into a long-term lease with
the City of St. Pete,
suggesting that any new
facility will have to be built
on the west side of the bay,
which automatically restricts
access to a majority of
area residents. Even if a
new facility is located in
Tampa, its unlikely to
result in consistently
strong fan support.
Subject to the normal
ups and downs associatedwith winning and losing,
MLB doesnt have an
attendance issue. What
baseball has is a Florida
Issue, which is unlikely to
disappear anytime soon.

Have Faith, T-mobile - Surf City won't drop your call!
T
-Mobile would like to build a cell tower to look like a 55-foot
bell tower at Community United Methodist Church inHuntington Beach. T-Mobile is suing Huntington Beach
because city leaders dropped their proposal to build a 55-foot cell
tower disguised as a bell tower at a local church.
Last year the cell phone company filed a lawsuit against the city
when they were blocked from constructing two tree-shaped cell
towers at two local parks.
T-Mobile filed its latest lawsuit April 17 alleging that the city
violated federal law when it prohibited the cell
City Attorney Jennifer McGrath declined to comment on the suit.
The suit alleges that the city unlawfully denied the cell tower
proposal saying it was a "visual blight" and would lower property
values even though a 52-foot bell tower already exists at the church.
The city also denied the proposal saying it was incompatible with
the land use, evidence that a gap in coverage
was "contradictory" and the company did notanalyze other sites, according to the lawsuit.
T-Mobile said the city's basis for denial is
unfounded, the suit said.
The city's zoning administrator
approved the plans in November, but the
project was appealed to the Planning
Commission where it was rejected in
January. The project was then appealed
to the City Council where it was
rejected again in March.
A court trai l for the
lawsuit f i led in May is
set for August.

Tues. March 23rd Doug & Theo left Los Angels for
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Enjoying 6 days in Fort
Lauderdale which is embraced by the Atlantic
Ocean, New River & myriad of scenic inland
waterways which included a day spent on water
taxis which traveled through the scenic inland
waterways, seeing houses & yachts that are
truly the homes of the rich and famous, from
CEOs to movie stars. Lots of fun restaurants as
well.
We embarked Celebrity Infinity on March
28th for our 2 week cruise through the Panama
Canal. Our first stop was George Town, Grand
Cayman. Grand Cayman is a peaceful British
Overseas Territory known as the Cayman
Islands. Consists of 3 Islands just 480 miles
south of Miami, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac,
and Little Cayman. George Town is the capitol
and main city of Grand Cayman Island. We
enjoyed spending a day walking around town
and looking for a British Pub, all they had
were 2 Irish Pubs. Because of water
conditions my scuba diving
was called off.
Our next Port was
Cartagena, Colombia, alsoknow as Cartagena de
Indies. It was founded in
1533 by Don Pedro de
Heredia, and was a major
center of early Spanish
settlement in the Americas.
The Old City is surrounded
by a ring of massive fortress
walls built by the Spanish
starting in 1586. We enjoyed
the shops, statues and a beer
at the Hard Rock Cafe.
On Friday April 2, we
spent the Day touring the
Panama Canal. A little
history on the Canal is the
French first started to build
the Canal in 1880 but succumbed a decade later after
poor planning, malaria and yellow fever. A phony
newspaper story about a volcano eruption caused U.S.
senators to back building a canal across Panama instead
of Nicaragua. In 1903, a newly independent Panama
granted the U.S. a controversial 99 year territorial lease to
build and administer the canal for 10 Million US $. The
Panama Canal is a lock-type canal, approximately 80
kilometers long that unites the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans at one of the narrowest points of
both the Isthmus of Panama and the
American Continent. The Canal officially
opened its doors to international trade on
August 15, 1914, and since then, more than 970,000
vessels have transited the waterway. The canal has 3 sets
of locks, Gatun, Pedro Miguel & Miraflores each has two
lanes the locks serve as lifts elevating vessels 85 ft. above
Sea level, it takes ships 8 to 10 hours to complete.
Our next stop was Puntarenas,
Costa Rica which is the largest
province in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is
known for its Original Canopy Tour
zip lining through the old forest. The
thrill of swinging through the trees is
amazing. We would like to go back
and spend more time in Costa Rica
there is much more to see.
The port of Huatulco, Mexico
was beautiful, it is made up of 18
miles of cove-jagged coastline, nine
distinct bays, dozens of secluded
coves and beaches. The snorkeling
was amazing, an abundance of sea
life. Our ship was escorted into the
cove by the navy and we were greeted
at the dock by the military, this I
believe was because of the drug wars
and kidnappings that have been going
on. Beautiful port.
Acapulco, Mexico was our
next stop the placehas changed since my
last visit in the 80s
from the quite little
beach town to now a
big city. We spent
time walking the
streets and market
place and exploring
the old Fort.
Our final Port
before San Diego
was Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico, great place
to visit and would of
liked a longer day
there. Lots of very
nice restaurants. Just
a note our Local
Paper did not make
the last two ports it
had seen its day.
Our final stop San Diego, and yes it was good
to be home.
