Dear Disciples in Christ,

This month we celebrate the Queen of Church Fesvals – The Resurrecon of Our Lord –

Easter Day. As we have been focusing during this season of Lent – “Living Lent As People of

the Resurrecon”, our enre lives are affected by this simple statement: “We are always alive

in Christ, who died and was raised.” This is reflected in how we live and relate daily with

others. The suffering and death of Jesus have no meaning without the Resurrecon. The

Apostle Paul writes in his first le.er to the church at Corinth, chapter 15: “But if we preached

that Christ has not been raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no

resurrecon from the dead? If there is no resurrecon of the dead, then not even Christ has

been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have tesfied

about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are

not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has

not been raised, your faith is fule, you are sll in your sins…For as in Adam all die, so in

Christ all will be made alive…’Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is

your victory? Where, O death, is your sng? The sng of death is sin, and the power of sin is

the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my dear brother, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to

the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor is not in vain.” (NIV, 1 Corinthians

15:12-17, 22, 54b-58)

The apostle Paul clearly states that as Resurrecon People we are to live our lives as a witness

to the Resurrected Lord. Let us live daily, in our thoughts, words and deeds, the words of

Beatudes – “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before men, that they may

see your good deeds and give praise to your Father in heaven.” (NIV, Ma.hew 5:14 & 16)

As we connue our Lenten journey and celebrate the Queen of Fesvals may the Holy Spirit

guide us to be His lights today and always.

In His Resurrecon Joy and Peace,

“THANK YOU January 20, 2016, LCOS celebrated the life of Michael (Mike) Kardash with a memorial service and a memorial luncheon. Thank you to all of you who helped prepare food, set tables, prepare food for the buffet table, clean up and for the dish washers, and for the beautiful bouquets of flowers adorning the tables. The Kardash family and friends expressed the many thoughts and memories of the Memorial Service, and following the services, having a buffet luncheon, was very appreciated for all the work that had been done at LCOS for Mike, and said that the ladies did a good job to make all the tasty food served. Great job to each and every one of you. Blessing and Thanks. Shirley Nester”

THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Polar Bear Plungers. 3,500 people came out to jump in the water and raise money for a good cause. Altogether about $850,0000 was raised for Special Olympics Delaware.

Stewardship Thoughts by Cindy McClain

Growing up, my family attended church sporadically. We went to the Christmas and Easter service, but the rest of the year was hit or miss. I can remember us 4 children wanting to be the one to put the dollar bill in the offering plate when it came around, but then I never again thought about where that money went or who it helped. It wasn't until I got married that I started attending church somewhat regularly. Those early years for us were very tough, we were both

working, had 2 little girls, and massive credit card debt. We put in our small offering, but I still didn't connect where the money was going or who it was helping. I was overwhelmed and lived day to day, moment by moment. When I reached my mid-30s, we were doing well financially, the girls were teenagers, and we were attending a church we really loved. As I learned more about who God was and learned that we all have "time, talent & treasure", it really made me want to be obedient to a God who faithfully stood by our side during the hard years and somehow we had never gone without. We made the decision that year to tithe. Financially it was a lot of money and honestly sometimes quite painful to write that check out. We were in the process of saving for a house and sometimes I had the thought that we would get to our goal quicker if we gave less. But, faithfully, we gave. I can tell you, in my entire life, nothing gave us greater joy and peace than giving back to God what ALREADY BELONGED TO HIM! The blessings we received were mind blowing! We ended up finding our dream house with acreage and moving back to my home state. As I learn more and more about God and how faithful and loving He is, it makes me want to spread that same love to others. Even though we don't tithe at this point, it is a goal that we strive for because of the profound joy it gave us. So we give in other ways. We have been able to help 2 little boys through World Vision after attending a Sunday School lesson here at LCOS. We also have been involved in many different aspects of the church and we have both come to realize that we want our lives to be a living worship to our most loving and faithful God.

Qigong Qigong [pronounced chee-gong] is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique involving meditation, controlled breathing and movement

exercises. “Qi” is a Chinese concept that loosely means vital energy, breath or spirit. “gong” means mastery or cultivation. Therefore Qigong is sometimes translated as “mastery of your energy”. While there are many forms of qigong practice in the world primary forms involve breathing and meditation to promote health and spirituality. Specific practices can be targeted to treat arthritis, allergies, hypertension and much more. Qigong is easily adapted to those with mobility issues. Research is ongoing into the efficacy of qigong as a complimentary treatment for cancer patients.

Troop 1 News By Christopher Dean Several boy scouts and leaders of Troop 1 Lewes joined the crowds of Rehoboth Beach with participation in the Lewes Polar Bear plunge. The scouts braved the cold weather and took a quick dip into the ocean. Some boys felt the need to dip twice! This activity was just one of many that has kept the Troop busy these long winter months. Troop 1 scouts helped kick off the holiday season in December with participation in the Lewes Christmas parade, followed by a weekend of cold weather camping at Boy Scout Camp Rodney in North East, Maryland. Several scouts participated in local holiday events, earning service hours to help them earn merit badges and move up in rank. The month of January brought the first Troop ski trip, where the scouts, along with some family members, went skiing and snowboarding at Shawnee Mountain in Pennsylvania. Scouts and their families had a great time during a fabulous weather weekend.

Merit badge college started off the month of February, with scouts travelling to Salisbury, Maryland to work on various merit badges. Merit badges help scouts learn about a topic of interest and can help launch interest in a career field. The badges also help scouts move up in their rank levels as they work towards the high rank of Eagle. Many scouts are working on as many as four badges at once by attending the college, spending an entire Saturday attending classes. Merit badge college involves two full Saturdays and the second session is scheduled in March. Troop 1 is now preparing for the “Klondike”, a boy scout event where scout patrols build sleds and travel a route

with designated activities. This is a weekend camping trip that takes place every year at Camp Henson in the cold month of February. Boy Scout Troop 1 of Lewes has involvement of several members of the LCOS family including Scoutmaster Michael Price, Scout Leader Ben Sala Sr, Committee Members Christine Price, Neil Dignon and Elisabeth Dean along with scouts Nate Price, Lex Dignon, Ben Sala Jr and Christopher Dean For information on Troop 1, please contact Mike Price, Scoutmaster, at 302-236-6520.

CALL PROCESS CLARIFICATIONS There have been many questions regarding the call process and why pastors may decline a call. Here is some information that might help clear up some of the confusion: 1) Pastors do NOT asked to be put on our call list. The call list is compiled by our District President, who seeks to match the gifts of pastors with our needs for ministry. The pastors on the list do not even know they are on our call list until we telephone them and ask if they are interested in considering a call. So, these are not pastors who asked to be interviewed by us and then declined when we extended them a call. We were seeking them, not the other way around. 2) This process DOES TAKE A LOT OF TIME. It is designed that way. Think of it as a marriage. If you are going to marry someone, you (hopefully!) take plenty of time to get to know the other person and make sure you share the same values and principles, and that you are a good fit for each other. Each partner in the marriage is evaluating the other over some time in order to avoid rushing into a relationship that may or may not be a good one. So, the process of finding a pastor takes time and thought and most of all PRAYER on the part of both parties, so that we hopefully can discern if God is calling this person to LCOS at this time. 3) We are not the only church that is seeking a pastor. In our District, there are several churches that are also in the call process and the District President has to compile lists for each one. We can only seek pastors that are ordained in the LCMS, so our potential candidates are limited by the number of pastors there are. This is not the only job our District President has, so it takes him a while to get these lists out! 4) This is NOT like hiring someone for a job in the business world. We don’t just put an ad in the paper, collect resumes, and hire someone. It is a process in which we (ideally!) allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts and in the hearts of those whom we extend a call. It is counter-cultural and therefore sometimes frustrating and difficult when we are used to the way things work in the world outside the church. Please continue to ask questions and seek clarification of things you don’t understand or that don’t seem to make sense. It is important that correct information is shared instead of speculations that may or may not be accurate. Most importantly, however, is to remember to PRAY for this process. God has a plan for us and will fulfil it in His time, not ours. We are very fortunate to have Pastor Stano and Pastor Mordhorst available and willing to assist in this time. Many churches have to rely on different pastors each week or on their elders conducting their worship services. We are truly blessed to be where we are right now. Keep the faith! E-MAIL ETIQUETTE Dear Disciple of the Lord, Below is a list of Email Ethics Understand the difference between “To” and “CC.” As a

rule of thumb, the more people you send an email to, the less likely any single person will respond to it, much less perform any action that you requested. The people you include in the “To” field should be the people you expect to read and respond to the message. The “CC” field should be used sparingly. You should only CC people who have a need to stay in the know. The “BCC” field should be used even more sparingly. People you include in the “BCC” field will not be visible to others.

Keep messages brief and to the point. Make your most important point first, then provide detail if necessary. Make it clear at the beginning of the message why you are writing. There is nothing worse for the recipient than having to wade through a long message to get to the point. Worse, if you send long messages, it is much less likely that the person will act on what you have sent or respond to it. It’s just too much work. It often gets set

P 7

aside and, unfortunately, forgotten. Don’t discuss multiple subjects in a single message. If you need to discuss more than

one subject, send multiple e-mails. This makes it easy to scan subject lines later to find the message you need. It also contributes to briefer e-mail messages and a greater likelihood of a response. Also, the more specific you can be about your subject heading, the better.

Reply in a timely manner. I don’t think e-mail demands an instantaneous response. I have written about this elsewhere. Responding once or twice a day is sufficient, unless you are in sales, customer service, tech support, or some other field where a faster response is expected. Regardless, you must reply in a timely manner, otherwise you will incrementally damage your reputation and decrease your effectiveness.

Be mindful of your tone. Unlike face-to-face meetings or even phone calls, those who read your e-mail messages don’t have the benefit of your pitch, tone, inflection, or other non-verbal cues. As a result, you need to be careful about your tone. Sarcasm is especially dangerous. If something gets “lost in translation,” you risk offending the other party. The more matter-of-fact you can be, the better.

Don’t use e-mail to criticize others. E-mail is a terrific way to commend someone or praise them. It is not an appropriate medium for criticism. Chances are, you will simply offend the other person, and they will miss your point. These kinds of conversations are usually better handled face-to-face or, if necessary, over the phone. Especially, don’t use e-mail to criticize a third party. E-mail messages live forever. They are easily forwarded. You can create a firestorm of conflict if you are not careful. Trust me, I’ve done it myself more than once.

Don’t reply in anger. It almost never serves your purpose or long-term interests. Don’t reply in anger. In the heat of the moment, I have written some brilliant replies. I

have said things in writing that I would never have the guts to say face-to-face. This is precisely why you should never ever fire off an e-mail in anger. They almost never serve their purpose or your long-term interests. They burn up relationships faster than just about anything you can do. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and write the message, then delete it. Usually a day or two after you didn’t send an angry e-mail, you’ll understand the wisdom of restraint.

Don’t overuse “reply to all.” Last week I received an e-mail from someone who needed to know my shirt-size for a golf tournament. He sent the e-mail to about ten or twelve people. No problem with that. However, some of the recipients, hit the “reply all” key (out of habit, I am sure) and sent their shirt size to everyone on the list. This, of course, just adds more clutter to everyone’s already unwieldy inbox. Your default response should be to reply only to the sender. Before you reply to everyone, make sure that everyone needs to know.

May I add my own updated translation of Matthew 18:15 " If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you and not a group email or by hitting the reply all button.

LCOS BOOK CLUB meets on Monday, March 21 at 4:30pm. We will be discussing Missing Letters by Stephen Hayes. From Amazon.com: "Young Daniel’s addiction is pushing him fast into a downward spiral and wreaking havoc in the rest of the McGale family. He has run away and his father, Traveler McGale, badly wants to run after him, despite being advised not to by his wife, his best friend and the headmaster at Daniel’s school. But Traveler has been moving through his own life shackled with memories of loss. Loss of a father who was never there. Loss through war of a stolen youth, of friends and of faith in the future. As he sets on a fear-laden search for seventeen year old Daniel, he comes face to face with his own troubled past, his own fears and his ongoing sparring with an inscrutable god. Sometimes in life, however, a man begins a search only, at the end, to find ---- not what he was looking for ---- but something else, something precious and totally unexpected." Stephen Hayes is a resident of Lewes, DE and this is his second novel. Join us for a time of discussion and fellowship – all are welcome!

BUS TRIP TO BIGGS MUSEUM Friday, April 15 we are hosting a trip to the Biggs Museum in Dover, DE to view their exhibit of the St. John’s Bible. M This is the first illuminated, handwritten Bible of monumental

size (24 1/2 x 15 7/8) to be commissioned by a Benedictine Monastery in 500 years. M All books of the Old and New Testaments are presented in seven volumes of

approximately 1,150 pages using the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation. 70 of the pages will be on display.

M The Saint John’s Bible was commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota. It was executed by Donald Jackson, Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office, along with a collaborative team of scribes, artists, theologians, and scholars.

M Planning and work began in 1995. The first words were penned on March 8, 2000, and the final word was written on May 9, 2011. Though the pages are complete, the Bible remains unbound at this time.

M The creation work was done in a scriptorium in Wales while the theological work was done at Saint John’s University.

M The Saint John’s Bible was made using traditional materials such as vellum (calfskin), ancient inks, gold and silver leaf and platinum, and was written with quill pens from goose, turkey, and swan feathers.

Tickets are $20 (which pays for the bus and your admission to the museum) and we have 45 seats available. We will depart LCOS at approximately 8:15am, take the 2 hour tour at the museum, and then stop for lunch enroute back to LCOS, returning by 2pm. This trip is open to all, so invite a friend to join you! Sign up using the insert in the bulletin or by calling the church office (302) 227-3066.

LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOR COUNCIL MINUTES, FEBRUARY 8, 2016 For Approval March 14, 2016

Scott Freber called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. Sister Deb provided the opening prayer, “Daring Boldness”, which is based on Matthew 17.4. Discussion was based on where LCOS should be bold now. Review and Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the January 11, 2016 meeting were reviewed. A motion was made by Lou Jones and seconded by Patti Brown to approve the minutes as pre-sented. They were accepted by all. The minutes will be posted on the bulletin board in Fel-lowship Hall.

Shared Ministry Review and Preview Board of Education: Submitted by Gwen Kunkle Present: Renee Bennett, Marge Kunkle, Nicole Welling, James McDonald It was determined that Renee was now the Board of Ed chairman and Gwen and Marge agreed to help her till the end of the school year. Merv came into meeting to ask us when the board was going to clean up the Sunday School classrooms as well as the closets so items could be placed in the new shed. He also men-tioned that Renee had the keys already. He also mentioned that the dumpster was for all to use but that we must use it within the next 2 weeks because they only wanted to keep it for 1 month and it has already been there 2 weeks. Gwen, Marge and Renee decided to start cleaning out that Saturday 1/30/16 and if need be continue on Sat Feb 6th. Marge asked about confirmation this year. Jim advised that the new Pastor would need to decide on next year’s program. Jim asked about the funds we had agreed to donate for the van that Westside New Begin-nings was trying to purchase. It seems that they have raised a substantial amount now. He suggested $600.00 but members present agreed to $300.00. Jim threw out a "wild" idea as he said and start something new. Perhaps start a preschool Sunday school maybe 2 times a month during the 9:45 am service. Marge explained that she had already spoken to Christine Minyon to see if she would be interested in doing something like this and she said yes. Marge will draft up a letter and send to the parents.

Next Meeting: February 18 at 5:00 PM Board of Property: Submitted by Jim McClain MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 21, 2016 1. Members present unanimously agreed that in 2016 our priority should be to finish any pro-jects currently underway such as the completion of the pole barn and removing the smaller sheds and dumpster from the property, finish painting the outside of the buildings, installing 4 more exterior lights above outside doors, programming the thermostats in the sanctuary, etc. and spend the rest of 2016 seeing to the maintenance of the buildings and property but start-ing no new major projects 3. Jim/Merv will speak with Boards that were originally involved with the moveable message board, and if they are no longer interested in using it and being responsible for it, then it will be removed from the property. 4. The parish house siding will be replaced when the weather is cooperative. Board of Social Ministry: Nine members present--Hurrah!! * Some monies were spent from the Good Samaritan Fund to help with motels, rent and elec-tricity. With Action Team money from Thrivent we purchased hats, coats and gloves for ESL children. With the remainder, underwear, socks, hats and gloves were purchased for Juust Sooup. A large box of toiletries and many packages of gum were also delivered to Juust Sooup. * The Lord's Cupboard received 100 large bags of food from Safeway which were added to The Lord's Cupboard. We receive bread , cakes and other bakery products from Safeway each week. They are distributed to ESL and the remainder is taken to Home of the Brave in Milford. Each 2 boxes of food from the Cupboard contains 4-5 complete meals. LCOS feeds about 25 families each week which means an average of 340 families each year. Thank you to all who support this important ministry with their frequent donations. Social Ministry is col-lecting food/and other coupons from magazines and newspapers for HOME-Helping Our Mili-tary Everywhere. No need to cut out the coupons, just leave them in the box provided by the mailboxes and they will be distributed to help military families purchase groceries in commis-saries overseas. This is an ongoing project so keep the coupons coming. * It was voted to send $100 each to The Way Home, which helps newly releases prisoners, and Orphan Grain Train. * Social Ministry is sponsoring a Vendor/Craft Show on Saturday, March 5. There are 50 folks displaying their wares in the Fellowship Hall, Rooms 1.2.6 and in the back hall. This is a huge undertaking so please be receptive if you are contacted to give a helping hand. Thanks in advance.

Mel shared with us that Renee and Sarah Bennett are training acolytes, she will talk to Tim about how they process and recess during the services. Jan suggested that we put the names of those who help with the alter back in the bulletin each week again. Donna will talk to Carol about taking care of that. Marcia will give Kelley the names for Ash Wednesday. No bricks on order at this time. Marcia asked how many readers we need for the 12 noon services and the Lenten services. Donna will find out from Debbie and Pastor. Donna reported from Debbie that the Lenten services will be from “Living Lent”. There will be no communion for Wednesday services except the Ash Wednesday services (Noon and 7 PM). We will be having guest pastor for 2 Sundays. 2/14/16 will be Bob Mordhorst and 3/13/16 will be Chuck Brabant. A regular Maundy Thursday worship Service this year with commun-ion; Board of worship decided there will be no Seder meal this year. There will be a dinner following the 1115 AM service on Palm Sunday. This is in conjunction with the program that Bob Mordhorst is doing for Stewardship. On Easter there will be regular fellowship at the regular time in the Fellowship Hall. Donna also discussed the list from council on needs for the Board of Worship. The board de-cided there will be no changes as far as Saturday services or offering a service in Spanish until we have a new pastor and he has some input on these 2 topics. As far as more tradi-tional hymns at the traditional services this is still under discussion. Jerry stated maybe we could incorporated a hymn request in with the May concert. He will get other ideas from Tim as well.

Our Next meeting will be Thursday March 3rd at 6:30pm Pastor’s Report The ministry we share here at LCOS continues to serve the Lord and His people in many ways. I continue to give the Lord thanks for sharing this ministry with you. On a personal note, your ongoing prayers and support have continued to bless Carol and myself. I am continuing with what they call Phase 3 of cardiac rehab. This is similar to Phase 2 except no monitoring. I am trying to stay to a Monday, Wednesday & Friday schedule, usu-ally between 3-4 pm. We also appreciate your care and patience with us as we settled and moved to our new home New Kent, Virginia. The next weeks will be the process of unpacking many boxes. The one way trip is 250 miles, which without stops would take 4.5 hours. For the Lenten Season I will be traveling home on Sunday afternoons and returning on Wednes-days in time for the suppers and midweek Lenten service. My plans for after the Lenten sea-son are to leave on Sunday afternoons and return on Thursdays in time for any late after-noon meetings. I appreciate your care and support in this change. Another busy time of the year is here! The staff and the various Boards have planned and are executing details for Lent and Easter. What a blessings for us to share these times to-gether. The service schedule includes our mid-week Lenten worship series, “Living Lent as People of the Resurrection.” Services will be held on Wednesdays at 7 PM, with Soup and Salad served at 5:30 PM. Ash Wednesday, February 10 will be Imposition of Ashes and Communion Service at both 12 Noon and 7 PM. I hope and pray you will join us in all these Lenten opportunities to focus on our Lord’s Passion. As the vacancy Pastor, I continue to make visits to the hospitals, nursing and rehab centers and home visits. These are shared in conjunction with visits made by the Board of Elders and Sister Deb. I will continue to work closely with the Call Committee and Pr. Keith Less as we progress through the Call Process. It has been a little over a year but I feel the Lord has provided wisdom to the members of the Call Committee and that even with the delay in the process, since we must begin with a new list, interviews, etc., His Will will be accomplished soon.

A reminder that I will be away from here, February 11 - 16, for moving some storage items and the process of settling in our new home in New Kent Virginia. Pr. Bob Mordhorst will be our worship leader on Sunday, February 14. I hope and pray you will each take a dedicated and active part in the Consecrated Stewards opportunity coming in this season of Lent! As we gather this month and continue to look at the opportunities for ministry as you continue the Call process , I would again share these words – from 1 Corinthians 12:27-31: “Now you are the body of Christ and EACH ONE OF YOU is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second proph-ets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the great-er gifts.”(NIV). Old Business Constitution/By-Laws Status: Scott mentioned that the revised proposal has been approved by the District. Copies of the document will be emailed or mailed to all congregational mem-bers soon and a voter meeting needs to be scheduled. Pluses and Needs: Scott referred to the list handed out at the January meeting and asked if any boards had reviewed and discussed this. Social Ministry, Finance, and Education re-viewed. Renee reported that the education program is undergoing change, and is working thru some difficulty to define more meaningful programs for all age groups. Pastor Les spoke about using the term Christian Education as a more appropriate title for our overall program (drop the use of ‘Sunday School’ which is outdated now). He emphasized that we are in a different time presently, which should be called the “non-Christian” period. Flexibility is need-ed in planning and changing our programs. Renee will move forward to make changes after the current year is finished. Scott will review the list again and make changes and will mail out to the council to trigger deeper discussion at the next meeting. New Business Neighborhood Program: Sister Deb distributed a description paper of the program, which has been adopted throughout the SE District. The focus is on sharing Jesus with those around you. Pastor Mordhorst suggested asking your neighbors or contacts if there was any-one we could pray for as a way to initiate contact. Sister Deb indicated that the district has been providing 2-day training sessions, and the next one, which she is attending, is February 26-27 in Olney, Md. She is looking for additional participation. Scenario Planning for the Future: Scott referenced the book The Art of the Long View by Peter Schwartz as a related refer-ence. He will send out material to council to plan for a dialogue at the next meeting. Lent and Holy Week Activity: Pastor Stano reviewed his schedule for the period which will include all Wednesday Lent services. Other elements are already announced and known. Adjournment and Closing Prayer A motion to adjourn was provided by Pastor Mordhorst and seconded by Lou Jones. The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Shirley Fleegle, Recording Secretary and Bill Brown, Taking Notes in Secretary’s absence.

The next meeting is Monday, March 14, 2016 at 6:00 pm.
