The LuxLetter
FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT
Dear Luxmanor Families,
It’s hard to believe the holiday season is upon us. It’s been a busy year for
the PTA.
Thank you to all the families that participated in the science fair. I was
mesmerized with the projects that were displayed. Thank you to our Science
Fair Chairs, Christine Lau and Anna Rollins, as well as to our judges and parent
volunteers.
In the spirit of being thankful, I want to also express my sincere gratitude
to all our committee chairs. Many of you don’t hold events, yet you work hard
to make our PTA run smoothly. Thank you, Mary Beth Lord and our
Communications Committee and thank you Hitomi Horie and our Media
Distribution Team.
I also want to thank our Spirit Wear chairs for setting up the Spirit Wear
Sale. I love the new designs and colors! Orders will be distributed mid-month.
Our last PTA meeting of the year is on December 3rd which coincides with
Giving Tuesday. Please read the attached flyer and consider making a direct
contribution to the PTA. Every dollar supports programs for our students!
Please join us at our Chipotle dine out on Wednesday December 4th. Bring in
the attached flyer or mention Luxmanor and Chipotle will donate 33% of all
proceeds to the PTA!
I am also looking forward to our Eat the Rainbow Week on December 16th. It
is very rewarding to see our kids excited about eating different foods during
this time.
Wishing you safe travels and a happy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Yelisa Rojas
PTA President

December Notes from Your Counselor…………Gloria Silverberg
“I am sorry, but….”
How do we teach our children to become accountable for their actions?
Children begin to develop their excuse making habits as soon as parents and teachers ask, “Why
did you do that?” Naturally, children do not want to get blamed or receive a consequence. As
children get older, they often begin to make excuses and blame others to avoid being accountable
for inappropriate behavior.
Children who say, “I am sorry, but…” are not truly apologizing because they are not taking
responsibility for their actions. It is important for children to learn to say, “I was wrong” and
what they will do to problem solve so they learn from their mistakes.
Your child can go through life trying to solve their problems by either blaming others and giving
false apologies or by owning their problems, admitting what they did was wrong, and being
accountable for their actions.
4 Ways to End Excuse Making
1. Challenge your Child’s Excuses:
If your child apologizes but adds the “but”, challenge them by saying “It sounds like you
are apologizing, but then blaming the other person. So, which is it, are you sorry or are
you blaming?”
2. Understand that Apologies are Not Always Necessary:
If a child is not sorry, don’t have them say they are sorry. Instead have them say what
they did wrong and what they are going to do differently.
3. Problem Solving:
Start while your child is young to problem solve. Use statements like “What is the
problem?” to help children identify what they want to change. “That does not solve your
problem.” Or “Let’s try to solve the problem this way.” This is how we teach children to
be respectful and responsible adults.
4. Start Today:
In order to eliminate the “yes, but…” from your child’s vocabulary, start with “Listen,
saying ‘I’m sorry, but’ is not really solving your problem. From now on, we are going to
do it another way. Then you can role play and practice it with them. “I was wrong, next
time I will do this.”

Career Speakers:
Special thanks to our parents who have so generously volunteered their time
to speak with our students about their careers. So far, we have had fantastic
interactive presentations from Ms. Fykes, Mr. Gross, Mr. Einhorn, Dr. Lin,
Mr. Klimek, Mr. Giambone, and Mr. Sanchez. We look forward to having
more parent Career Speakers throughout the year!
SGA:
We are registered to become a No Place for Hate School, an Anti-
Defamation League Education Program. Twenty years ago, in 1999,
ADL used research and experience to design a self-directed program
that effects positive change in school climates. Since then,
thousands of schools across the US have followed the steps required
to achieve the No Place for Hate designation.
The No Place for Hate Pledge:
• I promise to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
• I promise to do my best to be kind to everyone-even if they are not like me.
• If I see someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher.
• I will help others to feel safe and happy at school.
• I will be part of making my school No Place for Hate.

Cluster Rep Update Dear Luxmanor Community:
Thanks so much to everyone who sent emails to the Board of Education!! The Board Members received hundreds of emails in support of our cluster position regarding the reopening of Woodward High School.
We had a large group of advocates wearing WJ green and holding up WJ signs during our Cluster Coordinator's testimony at the BOE meeting on November 7th. A special thanks to everyone who attended. Please consider showing up the next time our cluster needs your support! The more people who show up in support of our cluster, the better.
Please know that the WJ Cluster Coordinators and Cluster Reps are hard at work trying to get another elementary school approved and asking for Woodward to be built as a comprehensive high school for our community.
Stay tuned for more updated information and advocacy opportunities in the New Year.
As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. The next Cluster meeting that I will attend will be held on December 4. If you have an issue that you believe impacts our school community, and you want me to bring up at the meeting, please let me know.
Happy Holidays!
Karen Foxman

Luxmanor Elementary School PTA Direct Donation Campaign
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s
#GivingTuesday will take place on December 3rd and will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back. While your PTA Membership provides many benefits to members and the school, we could not do all we do without our direct donation contributions. Your direct Donation contribution is tax-deductible and goes directly to supporting the PTA programs. No donation is too small, and every little bit will go to provide our children with the programs and events that help make their Luxmanor years so special. Thank you for your consideration in donating to the Luxmanor Elementary School PTA this year.
