In addition to the construction and expansion projectsplanned for the Tilden Holding Center and Walter JohnsonHigh School Luxmanor ES will undergo its own majorrenovation work scheduled to begin the summer of 2018 Over a series of four public meetings starting January 52017 the architects and managers for the project met withschool administrators staff community leaders andparents to review and comment on the design plans forthe site first presented to the school community in 2013during feasibility studies
Led by Jim Determan of the architect firm of Hord CoplanMacht the design team led participants in the meetingsthrough several iterations of the plans to get commentsand suggestions regarding any aspect of the proposedlook feel function flow or landscaping of the building andits site The team took their inspiration from the woodedsite incorporating earth tones in the building materials andplacing windows to capture the most natural light and bestviews of the canopy from surrounding trees Great carewill be taken to preserve the largest trees fronting theproperty whenever possible The renovation itself willentail demolition of the original school structure andextensions leaving only the 2008 two-story additionstanding which will anchor the new construction Two-story and three-story options were presented eachaddressing traffic flow accommodations for expanded busand parent drop-offs parking visual impact andaccessibility Ultimately the three-story version wasfavored over the two-story plan to allow for a greatercapacity of cars and buses to pull into the site and toincrease the landscape space around the building Although the height of the three-story structure wouldreach approximately 46 the impact would be softened bystepping back the upper levels

In addition to the construction and expansion projectsplanned for the Tilden Holding Center and Walter JohnsonHigh School Luxmanor ES will undergo its own majorrenovation work scheduled to begin the summer of 2018 Over a series of four public meetings starting January 52017 the architects and managers for the project met withschool administrators staff community leaders andparents to review and comment on the design plans forthe site first presented to the school community in 2013during feasibility studies
Led by Jim Determan of the architect firm of Hord CoplanMacht the design team led participants in the meetingsthrough several iterations of the plans to get commentsand suggestions regarding any aspect of the proposedlook feel function flow or landscaping of the building andits site The team took their inspiration from the woodedsite incorporating earth tones in the building materials andplacing windows to capture the most natural light and bestviews of the canopy from surrounding trees Great carewill be taken to preserve the largest trees fronting theproperty whenever possible The renovation itself willentail demolition of the original school structure andextensions leaving only the 2008 two-story additionstanding which will anchor the new construction Two-story and three-story options were presented eachaddressing traffic flow accommodations for expanded busand parent drop-offs parking visual impact andaccessibility Ultimately the three-story version wasfavored over the two-story plan to allow for a greatercapacity of cars and buses to pull into the site and toincrease the landscape space around the building Although the height of the three-story structure wouldreach approximately 46 the impact would be softened bystepping back the upper levels

On February 8 2017 the Montgomery County ParksDepartment held its inaugural meeting of the JosiahHenson Park Advisory Committee The meeting washeaded by Shirl Spicer Museum Manager of the JosiahHenson Park The advisory committee is made of up M-NCPPC staff community members and supporters Thevision for the Henson Park is to create a public museumthat celebrates the challenging and inspiring life ofReverend Josiah Henson the man who inspired thefictional character Uncle Tom The park will educatevisitors about the enslavement of African Americans inMaryland and the goal of the park is to promote a greaterappreciation of history in Montgomery County
The overall project schedule which is subject to revisionhas the following dates anticipated 30 design byJanuary 2017 60 design by May 2017 90 design byAugust 2017 100 design by October 2017 permitsissued by December 2017 bidding by February 2018NTP (Notice To Proceed) construction by May 2018 andproject completion by September 2019 The exhibitproject schedule assuming 100 of the funds raised forconstruction follows a similar schedule to the overallproject schedule with a close-out date of August 10 2018
