Donated items for the Freebee Table can be added throughout the Meet as the table will be uncovered at approximately 6:30 pm at the conclusion of your nominations for next year’s Officers & Board of Directors. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to October -
“Train Season” is officially open.
We have survived the “Great Blackout of 2011”. I was supposed to be in two places at once that evening. I ended up staying home as a radio watch stander for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. For those of you who
made it to the meeting, thank you for attending. For all of you who turned out in support of
our run at the San Diego Model RR Museum, THANK YOU for making this event a stellar success. This is one of our ways of “growing” our club and promoting some of our other events. I especially want to thank Steve Pierce and the erecting and tear down crews for without you this event would have been impossible.
Our October Meet is one of the most important in that we get to nominate our 2012 Officers and Board Members. The volunteers who have stepped up in the past have made this club what it is today. If you do not like how things are being run, don't complain about it, run for office. The other event is the Ed Karper Memorial FREEBIE TABLE. You never know what you will find there.
Upcoming events, Southwest Division TTOS will be hosting one of the largest toy train

meets on the West Coast on November 18-20 at the Pasadena Convention Center. I am looking forward to seeing a good turnout of our members there. If you going to have a table please put out flyers for our December All Day Meet. Again we are ALWAYS recruiting new members and promoting our club.
For those of us who still put trains around our Christmas Trees, send photos and captions to
Bill Hohnhorst for posting in the online edition of “The Main Line” for our December edition
On December 3-4 at Great American Train Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds we will again have our tri-gauge layout on display. Bring your trains, RUN your trains and help promote our All Day Meet the following week.
December 6th we’ll gather for our annual Christmas Dinner. The raffle at the dinner has
ANNUAL WHITE ELEPHANT RAFFLE
It’s time once again to dig out some of those items you have laying around, which you’re never going to use, and bring them to the October Meet for our Annual White Elephant Raffle . You’ll be helping the Club and helping yourself in getting rid of some of that old unwanted stuff taking up room in the closet or garage. It might also win you some brownie points with your housemate or make room for that next irresistible purchase.
In case you don’t recall how it works here’s the idea. You bring an item to donate to the Raffle. In return you’ll receive one Raffle Ticket, valued at $1, for each dollar the donated item is valued at. For example, if you donate a boxcar with a value of $10 you’ll receive ten raffle tickets. It’s as simple as that. For those who do not wish to donate, raffle tickets will be available for purchase at $1 apiece. And donors can purchase additional tickets at $1 each to increase their chances of winning a donated treasure.
Now, get digging and just see me when you arrive at the Meet to exchange your oldie but goodie “stuff” for raffle tickets. Bob Wall

always been great. Bob Wall , can you top last year?
Has anyone been working on a “Santa Special” train? I would love to have a Santa Special for Del Mar and the All Day Meet. Cars could include a Ralston Purina Reindeer Chow boxcar (2454/6454 chipped roof walks OK), a 6372? Horse Car with antlers added lettered “North Pole Stables”, a barrel ramp car with a plastic Santa and Sleigh (if railing is broken remove it completely), a shorty hopper re-lettered St. Nicholas Mines with a full load of coal, and two Fort Knox type cars, one to be fit out as an elf workshop for late orders, the other as the late order wrapping department. To pull the whole consist, a custom painted “Baby Hudson” and a bright red SP style caboose to bring up the rear.
I am still working on my Louis Hertz conversions....I have most of the parts including two MTH motors and one each Lionel and MTH frame. Mikado and Decapod are my goals for these. For smaller locomotives two 261/262 2-6-0s are underway. Projects like these always eat time as rounding up parts is occasionally a challenge. I am also mentally engineering a Commodore Vanderbilt out of a Flyer 1681 Hudson. It looks like a little cosmetic work is all that may be needed....Side skirts and the distinctive nosepiece along with a dark gunmetal grey paint job. I am also enjoying the restoration of a number of early O Gauge items including several 150 series locomotives and passenger cars. To keep the peace, these pieces were in deplorable condition and were not display worthy. I only restore things that are in otherwise hopeless condition. I would never desecrate a L/N or mint piece for either a customization or a repaint of any kind.
Enjoy “The World's Greatest Hobby” and share it with others. Operating toy trains brings out the hidden kid in all of us.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS New Members – Jim Weatherford reports that in September we welcomed yet another new member. We extend a very warm AGTTA “Welcome Aboard” to Jim Taylor who lives in San Diego and enjoys collecting G scale. Thanks Jim for becoming an AGTTA Member. And a job well done to Bob Wall who sponsored Jim’s Membership.
2011 Membership Total – With Jim Taylor’s new membership JW reports that our membership total now stands at 144. Super! ☺
AGTTA 2012 BOARD NOMINATIONS We need you! Now is the time to get
GOOD governing! Let’s do better than the US federal, state and local governments and have a higher percentage of participation in the nominating and voting for the future leaders of AGTTA. By participation I mean more than just showing up at the Meets; become part of the life force that makes things happen. Some of us are getting older and slowing down.
We need new Officers and Directors candidates to bring new ideas and energy for events and expansion of the membership. Many of our current outstanding BOD members are willing to run again but that’s not to say we don’t welcome new blood (figuratively speaking).
We have five or six highly productive one hour board meetings a year and feel proud of the success the organization has experienced to date. So who among you is willing to devote a few hours a year to PAY BACK the enjoyment you have experienced.
We have noticed that when we solicit names to run for the Board some show up late or leave the hall and don’t participate. WELL, this year at 6 pm when the nomination process begins the doors to the hall be closed . Those not participating will not be allowed back into the hall until nominations are compete and the ED KARPER FREE-BEE TABLE “free for all” has been attacked and cleared.
Please support your club by devoting a little time to make it better. Thanks again to those currently setting up and putting away tables & chairs, bringing snacks and donating to the raffle.
Sincerely, Bob Wall
Just to refresh your memory, here’s what the Club By-Laws, “Article VIII – Election and Terms of Officers and Directors,” states:
“Officers and Directors shall be elected annually for one calendar year by written ballot at the November General Meeting. All Officers and Directors are eligible for re-election. Nominees must be current members of AGTTA over the age of 18 and shall be nominated from the floor at the October General Meeting. Installation shall be held and the term of the office commence January 1.”
CLUB APPRECIATION AWARDS It’s also that time of the year to begin
thinking about our annual Club Appreciation Awards. Every year the Club recognizes those
October, 2011 5 AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line
Members who have put forth that extra bit of effort in support of our Club.
A one-page sheet providing all the details for these very important awards and an area in which to nominate a member will be available at
the October Meet. If you believe that a particular club member deserves recognition then please take the small amount of time and effort required to complete the form. Then just give it to any Club Officer or Director. It will be appreciated.

CHRISTMAS A LONG TIME AGO Editor’s Note: My thanks to Lee Davis for sending along the pictures and remembrances of a happy time so many Christmases ago.
Hey Bill. Just got these pictures from my brother. As you can see it's 1945 and I am four years old, going on five come January. The Marx engine with the wrong cars are my Uncle Carl’s. I know the couplers are not compatible, but knowing my Uncle he made it work. The mountains in the back ground are plaster of Paris. The little house on the right front of the picture with the train in it is like a cardboard with sprinkles all over it. There is a hole in the back to put a Christmas light bulb in. I still have that house and a couple more. Also, on the carpet in front of the house it looks like I got a xylophone from Santa that year. Ha Ha. Lee

CLUB NEWS Lights Out San Diego & AGTTA – As everyone who lives in San Diego County knows the lights went out on the afternoon/evening of our September Meet. Therefore we are adding the White Elephant Raffle, which was supposed to be held at the September Meet, to this month’s agenda. That means we will have a full plate of “goodies” at the October Meet. These include:
a) How-To Clinic, b) 2012 Board Nominations, c) Ed Karper Memorial Free-Bee Table, and d) The White Elephant Raffle.
Sure hope you will plan on getting there early so you won’t miss out on all the fun activities.
Special Raffle #3 – Needless to say no tickets were sold at the September Meet. Therefore as Bob Wall reported last month we’ve sold a bunch
of Raffle #3 tickets, but we have sold only about a third of our minimum ticket sales goal. So for those of you who have not yet bought tickets for our Special Raffle #3 (“Arrival In Escondido” Framed Limited Edition print) or if you would like to increase your chances of winning this beautiful print, BUY RAFFLE TICKETS at the October Meet.
AGTTA SDMRM Layout Run – Our 2nd 2011 Layout Run Session at the Balboa Park SDMRM ran from September 15th to October 2nd and was another huge success thanks to all those who ran their trains and those who came out in support.
Wanted – Member Steve Demro is looking for two Lionel 6430 - Cooper-Jarrett Box Vanilla Colored Trailers to go along with a flat car that he has. The lettering is copper and black. If possible, he would like to get the two trailers from the "same litter", meaning both trailers will have equal amount of wear and the same faded color.
