Harford’s First Mosque PlannedMuslim worship center will be in converted Abingdon houseBy Bryna Zumer of The Aegis

A Muslim group plans to open a worship center in Abingdon within the next few months, which a member of the group says will be the county’s first mosque.

Harford County Education Society, a group with an office on Laurel Bush Road that is registered as a Muslim nonprofit, is working to convert a house on five acres at 3014 Philadelphia Road into a 20-seat house of worship.

Rehan Khan, a spokesman for the group, said Muslims in Harford County have had to go to Baltimore County for services.

“There are more than 100 Muslim families and not a single mosque,” Khan said, adding the group is excited to have its own building.

He also said he expects the center to

grow as BRAC brings more people to the area.

“Now that people are moving in, we are going to have a mosque,” he said. “Right now, we are a very small group.”

The society came before the county’s development advisory committee in June 2010 with a plan for a house of worship, but failed an inspection report in late March of this year.

That property has a house on it, and was bought from John J. Jones Jr., for $290,000, according to tax records.

The county approved a site plan in July 2009, with seven parking spaces and potentially three employees.

The plan proposed a transfer of land to accommodate required setbacks for a house of worship.

The planning and zoning department also approved a landscape and lighting plan, and a surety bond of $4,080 was submitted to ensure the planting of approved landscaping, according to the site plan approval letter.

Richard Truitt, deputy director of inspections for the county, wrote in an e-mail in April that the inspection report showed the home does not meet building and accessibility codes that are applicable to the structure being converted from a one-family or two-family dwelling to a mixed-occupancy classification of assembly and storage, such as the proposed religious center.

Khan said the main issue is making some road improvements to Philadelphia Road (Route 7) because it is a state road, as well as updating the building to meet accessibility requirements.

“They have asked for a few changes and

we are working on that, and hopefully we will make those changes,” he said. “The major block is it has to be built according to State Highway [Administration]. In the next few days, we will have that highway [improvement] built.”

Khan said once the group is settled in the new building, it will hold an international festival for the general public to taste different ethnic foods.

“Once we have things in place, then we will invite the community to see us and have some kind of outreach program,” he said.

He also hinted at the possibility of growth in the future, although there are no specific plans.

Laura Abdur-Rahman, Al-Rahmah’s principal, also gave some remarks, i nc lud ing men t ion ing p lans fo r the expansion of its current high school, which currently has twelve female students.

“We expect to expand to the 11th grade next year. One of the exciting possibilities is that we will begin to have adjunct or guest faculty members for specific courses.” She also mentioned plans to complete a

science lab by October next year, as well as plans to hire a guidance counselor. As part of ISB’s expansion effort this year and the creation of a new Brothers Musallah area and a mezannine level for Sisters, additional classrooms have been created where the old Musullah once was.

Al-Rahmah School holds annual fundraisers, and the past few years have seen low attendance. This year, the

turnout from brothers was especially low. Money for the school is also raised during ISB’s Annual fundraiser. A l - R a h m a h i s I S B ’s s i g n a t u r e undertaking, the most costly and the most fruitful project. The fundraiser is a chance to collect money solely for Al-Rahmah and its new projects. The money collected this year will be used towards funding the science lab and the guidance counselor.

With his humorous jokes and beautiful Quran recitation, Sheikh Hassan Abu Nar actively engaged the audience at Washington Islamic Academy’s 2nd annual fundraising dinner on May 14, 2011. It was held at the Holiday Inn in Crystal City at 6pm.

The program was opened by second grade student Rayan Babar reciting the Quran. Afterwards, former principal Jose Acevdo gave a short talk on the Importance of Islamic schools in America. A PowerPoint presentation was shown explaining the

school’s finances and future projects.

Washington Islamic Academy is an Islamic school with grades pre-k to 8th grade located in the heart of Alexandria. It has been serving the Northern Virginia Muslim community for the past nine years. Presently one hundred and eighty students are enrolled. It is expected that an estimated two hundred and fifty students will enroll for 2011-2012.

“I believe in the work of W IA and every success that happens to the school is from the blessing of Allah,” said Halima Abdo, a WIA school administrator.

Also invited to speak was Sheikh Safi Khan, Imam and director of the Dar-us-Salaam community. Sheikh Safi Khan founded Al-Huda school pre-K –12 grade in 1995 and could relate to the struggles faced by WIA. According to Sheikh Safi Khan, the core of any Islamic School curriculum is to direct the students to the purification of the soul. This is done by incorporating Islam into all the subjects taught.

Students also took part in helping fundraise giving them a sense of belonging to the school. The Art teacher dedicated classroom time to make craft projects to sell during the dinner. Some students

decorated aprons that say “halal food,” while others made flower pens. Tables were set outside the main hall where they displayed their art work for sale. Parents were excited to purchase the art work that their children made.

While eating dinner , the audience was entertained by a play called “Blame on the Wolf” preformed by the fourth grade, closing the program. The setting was in a courtroom where the wolf was put on trial for the actions he committed in the

Climbing the Steep Path: Aqabah Karate Graduates Three New Black BeltsBy Wendy DiazMuslim Link Contributing Writer

What do you get when you add together a modern martial arts facility, experienced instructors, years of practice, and dedicated students?

The answer: Black belts.

Before May 22, 2011, Aqabah Karate had only graduated one black belt but after a grueling two-day exam topped with a warm ceremony, three more students stepped into the realm of the masters.

To become a black belt one must conquer the basics of Tang Soo Do, the Korean martial art that is practiced at the Aqabah Karate studio, master self-defense techniques -- coordinated, controlled movements called forms -- and Korean terminology. The black belt candidate must also attain unparalleled discipline in the art, have hours of teaching experience, and be a leader and example within their own group. The three black belt candidates who were tested on May 21st and 22nd were Uthman Eberle, 22, Zakariya Korme, 13, and Arbaz Khatib, 13; all part of the adult men’s class.

The “Dan Testing” or black belt examination, which began on a Saturday at 7am and lasted until 5pm Sunday, was conducted by Aqabah Karate Director, Muhib Rahman, master instructor, Jamal Pender, and assistant instructor, Hernán Guadalupe. In addition, special guests were

also invited to evaluate or assist during the tests including Grand-Master David Sgro (7Th Dan), founder of San Kil Tang Soo Do and co-founder of the US Goodwill Tang Soo Do Association (USGWTSDA), Grand-Master Steven Voelker (7th Dan), co-founder of USGWTSDA, and Abdul Malik Ahmad (3rd Dan), Instructor at Al Azhar Pencak Silat in Virginia. There were others who came to show support or to provide assistance with grappling and sparring, as well.

It was an emotional time for Director and founder, Muhib Rahman, who has taught the new black belts for years and seen them mature and progress as people and as martial artists. He was not part of the judging panel who evaluated the students, but he helped guide them

through their test and prepared the graduation ceremony. “I wanted to make sure our candidates demonstrate not only good physical martial techniques but more importantly good attitude and manners under all situations. Parts of the test were relaxed and other parts were demanding. But Alhamdulillah, everyone kept their composure until the very end,” said Rahman, who started the martial arts at Dar-us-Salaam in the late 1990s.

There was an open session of the test on Sunday between 3pm and 5pm before the candidates received their Dan certificates, where family members, friends, and Aqabah Karate supporters gathered to watch as they demonstrated the skills that have earned them their new titles. It was the most anticipated and exhilarating

moment for all those present, including the candidates.

The audience enjoyed a performance of forms and a self-defense exhibition, as well as high-flying acrobatics as the new black belts did dive rolls, wooden board breaking with simultaneous kicks and punches, and Uthman Eberle even broke two cinder blocks with a palm strike. Shouts of “Allahu akbar!” and thunderous noise rose from the tables where spectators sat in the multipurpose room of Dar-us-Salaam.

After the demonstration and words of encouragement from senior black belts, Uthman, Arbaz, and Zakariya were presented with their Dan Certificates. Proud new Cho Dan (1st Degree Black Belt) Arbaz said, “I accomplished something great. Like [my instructors] said, I just finished running across a field and now I’m ready to climb the mountain.”

The candidates also received new gold embroidered black belts, new Dan uniforms, and a luscious cake decorated with the Aqabah Karate logo and chocolate-covered strawberries; a sweet symbol of success.

No Debate About Success of Essay ContestBy Muslim Link Staff

On May 15, 2011, the Mafiq Foundation held an appreciation dinner and fundraiser for its long running annual essay and debate contest for Muslim youth. The effort started in 2002 with an essay contest and is now held across the greater Washington DC and Baltimore metropolitan region.

The dinner, held at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, attracted several dozen parents, supporters and former contestants. A demonstration of a parliamentary style debate was held for the audience featuring the ADAMS Center team against the Islamic Center of Maryland team with the topic of debate being “Is the Pen Mightier than the Sword?”

Kinder USA’s Ibrahim Abusway conducted the fundraising portion, helping collect almost $11,000 in cash and pledges. A portion of the money will be used

to publish the annual “Young Muslim Voices”, a collection of all the essays written for each year’s competition.

Lead organizer Mostafiz Choudhury said he hopes to see the Essay Panel Competition (EPC) become a permanent fixture of the Muslim youth educational landscape in the region.

“Our goal, insha’Allah, is to develop an automated system to run the programs, and establish a sustainable youth development platform - leading to an institution for Metro DC and beyond - to encourage, prepare, and coordinate competitive events to foster communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills of our youth,” said Choudhury.

Other presenters during the evening included past EPC winner Fatimah Waseem, now on her way to college, who stressed the positive impact EPC had on her public speaking skills. She urged the audience to continue supporting EPC.

ICCL Summer Camp Blends Spiritual Training With FunBy Hiba AkhtarMuslim Link Staff Writer

Last summer, the Islamic Community Center of Laurel (ICCL) was busier than ever hosting about 20 children at its annual summer camp. The camp was made up of children from between the ages of 5-15, and lasted about six weeks. Plans for this year’s camp include just as much fun and educational learning for this year’s crowd, which camp organizer Aqsa Chishty anticipates will be even larger.

Following the success of the basketball, painting, cooking lessons, outdoor games, and drawing activities camp goers took part in last year, planners hope to incorporate other, more elaborate activities, including calligraphy, baking, and stitching and sewing, and creating tie-dye tee-shirts. Special days involved day-long field trips. Last year, campers traveled to the aquarium, Air & Space

Museum, carnival, and were able to polish their skills in bowling and go-karting.

Some activities were split up between boys and girls. While girls learned how to make sandwiches and create friendship bracelets, boys partook in other activities, such as football.

Camp management says that they hope that the planned recreational activities will once again blend together with solid spiritual daily lessons to enhance each child’s summer in a way that is both fun and beneficial.

Last year, Brother Omar Khan, who conducted much of the camp, led sessions in taharah and wudu, memorizing duaas, surah recitation, fasting, Islamic etiquettes, hadith, and stories of the

about getting started with sustainable, cohousing communities. The founders of Good Tree Village organized the event. Good Tree Village is a group of Muslims in the DC area trying to start a physical community of around 15-20 families in a “co-housing” type of neighborhood. There was a unique energy in the room as the attendees listened, learned, and discussed how to move forward with an exemplary community life. The subject of sustainable living is of vital importance to the Muslim community. Our Islam, how we invite others to our Deen, and preserving an excellent example of life on earth for future Muslim generations all rest squarely in this discussion on ‘sustainability’.

One attendee stated, “We often hear about the need to ‘relieve our hearts of the love of this world’, and sustainable living is how it starts.” Sustainable living attempts to lessen the use of natural

resources by a group while acquiring key necessities of human life including transportation, energy consumption and diet. ‘Sustainability’ refers to meeting these modern human living demands without compromising them for the future. Cohousing is the simple process by which people work to create and maintain their own neighborhood. Located in rural, suburban, or urban settings, the cohousing design may be tailored to a particular group; the homes are always self-contained and have access to shared facilities. The overall intention is to create opportunities for interaction among neighbors. Thus, ‘cohousing’ along with an ‘eco-friendly lifestyle’ are both key aspects of sustainable living. To put this in perspective, what we see exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a frugal lifestyle is in fact the best example of ‘sustainable living’ – Islam in practice. So before reading further, we must understand that sustainable living, where everyone in the world could afford to live fairly without going hungry or lacking shelter – is a core Islamic virtue. Another attendee stated that indeed, Allah (Subhanahuwata’ala) has mentioned in the Qur’an as part of (Al-‘Araaf; 31), “…Eat

and drink, but be not excessive...”

The event’s focus was cohousing, which is present today in 113 communities nationwide. It continues to grow each year as the benefits are realized. The founders of Good Tree Village explained, ‘Cohousing provides personal privacy along with the benefits of living in a community where neighbors interact. It’s about living in a world that has changed dramatically in the last fifty years; home life has changed, more women are in the labor force, resources are reaching limits, environmental concerns are rising and many people feel overextended. Cohousing offers hope through building a rich sense of community where everyone contributes to a more sustainable world.” Examples can be found in Liz Walker’s book, and as technology advances, practical cohousing and eco-friendly living are becoming increasingly accessible.

In the U.S., cohousing relies on one of three legal forms of real estate ownership: individually titled houses with the common areas owned by an HOA (homeowner’s association), condominiums or a housing co-operative. Condo ownership is most common because it fits financial institutions’ and cities’ models for multi-unit owner-occupied housing development. Additionally, banks lend more on single-family homes and condos than housing co-ops. Cohousing differs from standard condos and master-planned subdivisions because the development is designed with significant input from its future residents. Thus the process emphasizes consciously fostering social relationships among residents. Common facilities are based on residents’ needs as opposed to what developers think will sell units. Turnover in cohousing developments is typically very low, and there is usually a waiting list for units to become available. So if someone wishes to sell their unit and move, they may do so provided they find a replacement.

However, cohousing is rarely subsidized. Though participants generally buy their own home at approximately market rate, new finance and development models for cohousing are being explored for affordability. Also, some communities have created a number of “affordable” homes below market rate for those who qualify for assistance; investment returns can be offered to those who fund the equity portion of the development to

reduce the final home purchase price. With their professional team’s help, members of the group establish size, quality and cost guidelines for the project. Essentially, members determine what they want to pay, and the project is designed to match those needs including unit prices. One of the simplest methods to set up the development is to incorporate as a standard corporation. This structure limits liability for members, is both most flexible and easily recognized by lending institutions. On completion of the development, the legal status will change to allow for individual home ownership.

The sustainability model begins with the frank realization that the perceptions of success in our Muslim communities – that young couples should get their own house big enough for three families, or that a large car or SUV is an investment to be proud of – are Islamically invalid, and certainly not sustainable in the United States beyond a few future generations. In addition, aspiring for such goals while many Muslims in America and abroad cannot afford a house, or even afford to get married makes the injustice of un-sustainability all the more poignant. The desire for a community-wide eco-friendly lifestyle must become part of the dialogue of our Imams and community leaders. In fact, the importance of environmental sustainability, the benefits of cohousing, and the overall subject of sustainable living are rarely the subject of Friday lectures or public discourse.

Practically, there is much that can be done to ‘retrofit’ existing housing and community infrastructure to help develop sustainable lifestyles. Recycling and reuse are major steps that any community can begin right now. Mosques rarely have recycling programs and those that do, have difficulty following them. To begin, environmental sustainability can be made an important part of Muslim children’s education at home and at the masjid. Muslims can start local gardens with neighbors as a method of social involvement and the physical activity and spiritual effects of these practices have untold benefits, especially for children at home during summer vacations. Neighbors in close proximity can help each other and promote love and good-will by sharing the duty of shopping so

that one pays the other to get some basic items that would otherwise require a trip to the grocery store – something that young couples with children may have difficulty with. Additionally, Muslims can try using the commuter-friendly public transport systems in the DC-metro region as well as use the increasing network of bicycle paths that cross DC, Baltimore, and many subdivisions for commuting to work. Our heavy dependence on cars is not only unsustainable, but takes away

from a more active lifestyle.

When discussing the process of making cohousing a reality among Muslims in the DC metro region, some of the brothers who attended the event stated that “As a Muslim community, we can return to a lifestyle that is increasingly sustainable as long as time and personal convictions are invested further.” Not long ago, the ‘all-together-now’ recycling system in place in most metropolitan areas was not present, the electric car an unlikely concept, and solar paneling was only for those who could afford an ‘eco-friendly’ lifestyle. Today, however, nearly everything is recyclable; Chevrolet’s Volt can be

In the next four years, WIA intends to expand the school by adding grades

9-12. In addition, they plan to add new classrooms, a science lab, and library. Next month WIA will break ground for a new playground.

An important pillar of any Islamic community is to have an educational institution. Any Islamic School cannot survive without the support of its community. It is important for the Muslim community to think outside the box and help finance their Islamic schools through creative means.

to conduct any class, including the adult classes, by himself. He has competed in several tournaments and has placed in all of them.

Arbaz Khatib has a long history with Aqabah Karate, beginning his journey at the age of 5 as a Tiny Tiger. After taking classes for two or three years, he left the program and rejoined in 2007. His sister also joined during this time as the girls’ and women’s classes were introduced. According to his teacher, Muhib Rahman, Arbaz was “sociable and curious during classes, and always sporting an infectious

smile.” Although he is 13, he has been in the adult class for 3 years due to his skills and development, being able to hold his own with older and bigger classmates.

Zakariya Korme has also been a part of the Aqabah Karate family for years, starting at age 5. He and Arbaz were good friends from the beginning of their training. He is described by his teacher as “shy, obedient, and hard-working.” Like his friend, he left karate after his Tiny Tiger years, and rejoined in 2007 with his sister. He joined the adult men’s class 3 years ago, because his teacher

hoped to challenge him as his skills were improving. In February 2011, his family won an award for most supportive Aqabah Karate family. Both Zakariya and Arbaz assist regularly with Tiny Tiger and Young Warrior classes and are role models for the younger students.

Aqabah Karate’s goal is to be a premier martial arts institution for all Muslims and Non-Muslims, while upholding Islamic Standards. The next black belt classing is scheduled for January when five young warrior boys and three girls will be tested.

Honesty: In the Hearts of the FaithfulBy Aisha Stacey

When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour (the Day of Judgment). These are the words of Prophet Muhammad. They paint a picture of the time leading up to the Day of Judgement, when righteous people will be sorrowful due to the lack of honesty around them. In the 21st century, we live in a world where honesty is valued and yet shunned at the same time. We expect people to be honest in their dealings with us yet we watch and applaud television shows and movies that promote and encourage lying and deceitfulness.

Without thinking, we teach our children that dishonesty is acceptable. When we expect our children to tell the caller on the telephone we are not home, this is a lesson in deceit. When we refuse

invitations and pretend we are busy, this is lying. We admonish our children for lying, yet the reality is we have been their teachers. Whether we tell lies, or whether we allow our children to live in a world surrounded by deceit, the lesson is learned and the honesty begins to disappear from the hearts of the next generation.

Honesty incorporates the concepts of truthfulness and reliability and it resides in all human thought, words, actions and relationships. It is more than just accuracy; it is more than just truthfulness, it denotes integrity or moral soundness. Islam commands truthfulness and forbids lying. God commands that a Muslim be honest.

“O you who believe! Fear God, and be with those who are true (in word and deeds).” (Quran 9:119)

Ibn Katheer, the renowned Quran scholar, explained the meaning of this verse. He said, “Being truthful and adhering to truthfulness, means you will be among the people of the truth and be saved from calamity and that it will make a way out for you from your problems”.

A true believer, one who is truly submitted to God, has many characteristics by which he can be identifi ed. The most obvious of these noble characteristics are honesty of character and truthfulness of speech. Prophet Mohammad was a perfect example of honesty. Even before his Prophethood, he had earned the titles of Al Amin (the trustworthy one) and As Sadiq (the truthful).

Al Amin, the Prophet Muhammad once gathered all the people of Mecca and

asked them, “O people of Mecca! If I say that an army is advancing on you from behind the mountains, will you believe me?” All said in one voice, “Yes, because we have never heard you telling a lie.” All the people, without exception, swore to his truthfulness and honesty because he had lived an unblemished and extremely pious life among them for forty years.

Abu Sufyan described his honesty. When Prophet Muhammad sent a letter to the Emperor of Byzantium inviting him to Islam, the Emperor, Heraclius sent for the Meccan trader, Abu Sufyan. Even though he was, at that time, a dire enemy of Islam, he spoke the truth about Prophet Mohammad when he said, “He neither tells lies nor betrays others, he

The following points will make it clear, that far from being spread by the sword, it was the inherent force of truth, reason and logic that was responsible for the rapid spread of Islam.

Islam has always given respect and freedom of religion to all faiths. Freedom of religion is ordained in the Quran itself: “There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.” (Quran 2:256)

If Islam was spread by the sword, it was the sword of intellect and convincing arguments. It is this sword that conquers the hearts and minds of people. The

Indonesia is the country that has the largest number of Muslims in the world, and the majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. But, no Muslim army ever went to Indonesia or Malaysia. It is an established historical fact that Indonesia entered Islam not due to war, but because of its moral message. Despite the disappearance of Islamic government from many regions once ruled by it, their original inhabitants have remained Muslims. Moreover, they carried the

message of truth, inviting others to

it as well, and in so doing endured harm, affl iction and oppression. The same can be said for those in the regions of Syria and Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, North Africa, Asia, the Balkans and in Spain. This shows that the effect of Islam on the population was one of moral conviction, in contrast to occupation by western colonialists, fi nally compelled to leave lands whose peoples held only memories of affliction, sorrow, subjugation and oppression.

Muslims ruled Spain (Andalusia) for about 800 years. During this period the Christians and Jews enjoyed freedom to practice their respective religions, and this is a documented historical fact.

Prophets and Sahabah. Mornings were dedicated to memorizing Qur’an and perfecting tajweed. On Fridays, campers would take a test on the week’s material. In eager anticipation for the fun ahead, campers were focused and proactive during morning learning sessions. This year, organizers are planning to focus more of the morning sessions on Juz ‘Amma, which they hope, by the end of the summer, most of the campers will have memorized and studied the tafseer of thoroughly.

This formula of interactive learning and lots of summer fun without the stress

and pressure of school seemed to be a recipe for success, as the camp received overwhelming positive feedback at the end of the summer. Because of the positive feedback, the masjid hopes to see even more campers this year.

“The summer camp is an opportunity for parents to bring their children to an Islamic environment during summer holidays. This will help open their hearts towards the religion and help them become more understanding of Islam and better practicing Muslims,” said Chishty.

Christian and Jewish minorities have survived in the Muslim lands of the Middle East for centuries. Countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan all have significant Christian and Jewish populations.

Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years, and therefore had the power to force each and every non-Muslim of India to convert to Islam, but they did not, and thus more than 80% of the Indian population remains non-Muslim.

Similarly, Islam spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. And likewise no Muslim army was ever dispatched to the East Coast of Africa.

An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, yearbook 1986, gives the statistics of the increase of the percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in The Plain Truth magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, while Christianity had increased by 47%. During this fifty-year period, there was no “Islamic conquest” yet Islam spread at an extraordinary rate.

Today the fastest growing religion in America and Europe is Islam. The Muslims in these lands are a minority. The only sword they have in their possession is the sword of truth. It is this sword that is converting thousands to Islam.

Islamic law protects the privileged status of minorities, and that is why non-Muslim places of worship have flourished all over the Islamic world. Islamic law also allows non-Muslim minorities to set up their own courts, which implement family laws drawn up by the minorities themselves. The life and property of all citizens in an Islamic state are considered sacred whether they are Muslims or not.

Conclusion

It is clear, therefore, that Islam did not spread by the sword. The “sword of Islam” did not convert all the non-Muslim minorities in Muslim countries. In India, where Muslims ruled for 800 years, they

are still a minority. In the U.S.A., Islam is the fastest growing religion and has over six million followers.

In his book The World’s Religions, Huston Smith discusses how the prophet Muhammad granted freedom of religion to the Jews and Christians under Muslim rule:

“The Prophet had a document drawn

up in which he stipulated that Jews and Christians ‘shall be protected from all insults and harm; they shall have an equal right with our own people to our assistance and good offices,’ and further, ‘they shall practice their religion as freely as the Muslims.’”[2]

Smith points out that Muslims regard that document as the first charter of freedom of conscience in human history and the

authoritative model for those of every subsequent Muslim state.

This honesty, an essential ingredient of the Muslim character, includes being truthful towards God by worshipping Him sincerely; being truthful to oneself, by adhering to God’s laws; and being truthful with others by speaking the truth and being honest in all dealings, such as buying, selling and marriage. There should be no deceiving, cheating, falsifying or withholding of information, thus a person should be the same on the inside as he is on the outside.

Prophet Muhammad warned us of the dangers inherent in dishonesty, and the benefits of living in an honest way. He said:

“Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. In addition, a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to wickedness and evil-doing, and wickedness leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before God, as a liar”.

(Saheeh Al-Bukhari)A true Islamic society is based upon honesty and justice, and is intolerant of dishonesty in all its various forms. Honesty in all business transactions is emphasised and the Prophet Muhammad exhorts Muslims to be scrupulously honest in all their dealings. Abdullah ibn Omar was once described as the “brother of the night.” He would stand at night performing prayer, weeping, seeking God’s forgiveness and reading Quran. One day, he was sitting among some close friends and he read the following verses:

“Woe unto those who give short measure, those who, when they are to receive their due from people, demand that it be given in full but when they have to measure or weigh whatever they owe to others, give less than what is due. Do they not know that they are bound to be raised from the dead (and called to account) on an awesome Day, the Day when all men shall stand before the Sustainer of all the worlds?” (Quran 83:1-6)

Abdullah wept until he was faint and kept repeating the words “the day when all men shall stand before the Sustainer of all the worlds.” He was amongst the most honest and trustworthy men, but being reminded of the punishment for those who

are deceitful filled him with fear.

A Muslim seeking to please God and follow the path of righteousness should be aware of the dangers of deceit and dishonesty. However, equally he should know that God is all Merciful and all Loving, willing to forgive even the gravest sins for those who strive for His sake. Honesty is very important in the life of a believer.

“Honesty descended from the Heavens and settled in the roots of the hearts of men (faithful believers), and then the Quran was revealed and the people read the Quran, (and learnt it from it) and also learnt from the sayings and traditions. Both the Quran and the traditions strengthened their honesty. (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

This is from among the many sayings of Prophet Muhammad, many of which forbade deceit and enjoined honesty. For those who wish to be among the truthful, Prophet Muhammad has left us with these words of guidance, “Let he who believes in God and the Last Day either speak good or keep silent”. Muslim FunFest In PhotosRecord Turnout for Muslim Funfest 2011This year’s Muslim Funfest Carnival was a huge success according to organizers, giving over 10,000 guests the opportunity to spend a beautiful day reconnecting with their friends, families, and community. The event, a non-profit carnival organized by the Muslim Link newspaper, attracted families from as far away as Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A major attraction at this year’s carnival was the hot air balloon ride which sold out well before the carnival. On the carnival day, however, the flight crew tested the wind by releasing a helium balloon into the sky and seeing how it moves as it rises. The wind was about 11 miles per hour, and the test balloon was moving erratically. The flight crew decided it would be unsafe to fly the hot air balloon so the ride was canceled. The Hurricane ride pictured above was one of the most popular rides, which was a major challenge for organizers and guests alike as lines grew long. “From our experience over the last three [Funfest] carnivals, we knew we had to increase the number of rides to spread out the guests and avoid very long lines. Over 70 seats were sold to excited families who enjoyed grand views of the lush High Point Farm greenery and the activities below. “The two weeks before the Funfest were pretty harrowing for us,” said organizer Jameel Khan. “We were watching the weather reports and they kept changing the chance of rain, it went as high as a sixty percent chance. The night before [the carnival] as we were setting up at [High Point Farm] there was a huge downpour. We are very humbled and grateful that Allah blessed the event with good weather,” he added. The entire event was sunny except for the period immediately after the athan for thuhr prayer. A large dark cloud moved overhead during salah, and the congregation felt a cool light mist on their faces. Immediately as the salah was completed, the sun came back out. “Did you all notice that? The cloud gave us shade during the salah. Was I the only one who noticed that?” asked Imam Safi Khan. This year there were nice inflatable rides at Muslim Funfest, and the ever-popular trackless train. Organizers made sure the inflatable rides were better managed this year, ensuring only a few young children within height restrictions were allowed to play in the inflatables at any given time. Initial estimates based on the number of cars that arrived throughout the day put the number of guests at over 10,000. High Point Farm is about 100 acres and Muslim Funfest took place over several large areas of the farm. The zip line ride area is not visible here, but would be towards the bottom of the photo. At one point, Montgomery County police closed the entrance to High Point Farm and asked guests to park on the street and walk to the carnival. This photo was taken by Abdul-Qaadir Abdul-Khaaliq , a guest who rode the helicopter around 4pm.

An estimated 1,500 performed thuhr salah with the congregation at Muslim Funfest. Imam Safi Khan took time to make sure the rows were straight, but some rows towards the back veered off the qibla direction. Next year organizers said they might use “chalk lines” to make lines on the plastic tarp or grass. “What we are doing now – the prayer – is the most important event for today,” Imam Safi Khan told the gathering. That’s what TML did this issue; we went to Baltimore’s Liquid Earth Raw – Vegan – Vegetarian Restaurant & Juice Bar, which serves vegetarian, vegan and raw menu choices. Liquid Earth has been serving local organic product, intelligent nutrition, enzyme rich, whole foods, which are great-tasting and great for you… for 15 years now.

The eclectic menu has selections of raw, vegetarian and vegan options which the owner explained represent his own nutritional journey from growing up in Pennsylvania where they raised and ate their own livestock, to becoming vegetarian and finally to raw eating. New to TML we asked many questions, and to sum up the idea of raw eating is pretty simple: nothing is cooked.

As an example we ordered “Raw Zucchini Spaghetti” which is long shredded organic zucchini with an incredibly bright tasting red heirloom tomato marinade sauce, topped with fresh organic baby Italian oregano. It was served with a side of sliced, skinned zucchini which was seasoned, the “spaghetti” was topped with a helping of the sauce and 3 “meatless balls” made of an assortment of nut meats and savory seasonings. Part of the “raw” eating theory is that the food should be consumed at the time it is prepared, so that it still maintains the maximum amount of nutritional value. Despite not being a “hot dish” as I have traditionally eaten my spaghetti, was still very tasty,

satisfying and did not leave me hungry, but I looked forward to the leftovers!! The seasoning was so fresh, and the food was laid out like art on my plate, I was only disappointed when watching my food preparation end – I sat next to the preparation counter and saw how it all went together. This was a huge treat.

Not being a vegetarian, I do like my sandwiches with something to stick between my teeth, and so we also ordered the Reuben Sandwich of marinated baked organic tofu on a bed of sauerkraut with melted Yarlsberg cheese and LE’s own 100,000 island dressing on Jewish rye. When ordering, you have the option to ask for your choice to be vegan or vegetarian… and they will substitute where necessary to accommodate your order. This sandwich was served warm with a side of shredded cabbage and carrot garnish, and while it may have been missing meat, it wasn’t missing flavor! The owner explained that he prepares everything in-house, all the items are fresh and handmade, so the Rueben “meat” is seasoned and prepared just like their Philly “Cheese-Fake” meat, and Un-bacon meat from tofu. Normally tofu is not very appetizing to me, how ever in this sandwich I would never have guessed it was tofu.

To compliment the meal, we enjoyed a “Facelifter” fresh drink of honeydew melon, mint, ginger, orange and grapefruit juices. To our pleasure it was not a thick, ugly, gloppy drink, but rather it was a smooth, tasty… a great meal all around. While they do not offer a “kids menu” there are options which will likely please the kids (and any skeptic in the family) such as a bean burrito, tacos, bagel with cheese, Earthburger, Philly cheese-fake sandwich and Hummus.

After speaking with the owner some more it turns out that LE is quite familiar with area Muslims and one year even extended their hours to

accommodate eating schedules during Ramadan. If you have never enjoyed a vegetarian or ‘raw’ dining before, do yourself a favor and visit Liquid Earth. There is plenty of seating within their restaurant, plus its located near Fells Point harbor if you prefer to take it to go, and enjoy the views of the area. Besides,
