US Mideast Policy is for Sale. The Highest Bidder? AIPACWashington DC Conference Examines the Israeli Lobby – the American Israeli Public Affairs CommitteeOn April 10, 2015, right in time to view the cherry blossoms waiting for an American Spring, the National Press Club building in Washington D.C. was the site for a heavily attended conference attempting to address vital questions about the size and growth of the Israeli lobby, which receives the largest share of the U.S. taxpayer-funded aid. Mainstream media blacked out this day-long event on a critical aspect of US foreign policy and C-SPAN withdrew its coverage this year in a 180 degree turn from their last years’ position. The event was organized by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.

Titled “The Israel Lobby: Is it Good for the US? Is it Good for Israel?”, the conference had presenters ranging from the Princeton Professor emeritus of international law and the former UN Special Rapporteur for Palestinian territories, Richard Falk to former Amer ican I s rae l Pub l ic Affa i r s Committee staffer M. J. Rosenberg, who said, "Middle East policy in the

US is determined by the highest bidder. The highest bidder is AIPAC. What that means is that democracy in the US is itself a myth." He wrote the manual for the AIPAC called Myths & Facts. Most Congressmen support Israel because of the financial benefits they get from AIPAC donors, said Rosenberg sharing his insight on the power of AIPAC dollars from his time as a congressional

staffer.

Congressman Nick Rahall from West Virginia, sharing what he called the ‘perfect example’ of how he thinks the lobby is controlling the strings in the Congress, pointed out the invitation to the prime minister of Israel to address Congress without State Department okay, without White House okay, and

two weeks before a domestic political campaign in the State of Israel. “Inviting the prime minister to come and give a political speech before the Congress of the United States two weeks before his toughest re-election in his life,” he said.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz columnist, Gideon Levy referred to the US as the “United States of Israel,” and said, “many times when someone looks at the relations between Israel and the United States, one might ask, who is really the superpower between the two?” He declared that the two-state solution is dead, drilling in the point that the Israeli occupation was going “deeper and deeper,” systematically dehumanizing Palestinians.

The charge of anti-Semitism is a powerful tool used to silence who speaks against the interests of the state of Israel was a motif in almost every speaker’s

On the morning of June 2, 2015, a young man, Usaama Rahim, was killed by both the FBI and the police while he was waiting for a bus, at in the morning in Boston, MA. The young man was the younger brother of Imam Ibrahim Rahim, a graduate of University of Madinah and an imam of the Lighthouse masjid in Oakland, CA.

According to AP, Police Commissioner Evans said the officers didn't have their guns drawn when they approached Rahim. He said police have video showing Rahim "coming at officers" while they are backing away. Rahim was shot twice

on his abdomen and chest, according to police.

That account differs from one given by Imam Rahim, who said in a Facebook posting that his youngest brother was killed while waiting at a bus stop in Boston to go to his job. There are many unanswered questions as the media accounts, the police and FBI accounts and the family’s account are so vastly different. Initial reports media reports said US terrorism experts killed Rahim, who CBS misidentified as being of Middle Eastern descent.

"He was confronted by three Boston Police officers and subsequently shot in the back three times," he wrote. "He was on his cell phone with my dear father during the confrontation needing a witness." Rahim was married and his home has been searched after his death by the police.

The authorities have not identified why Rahim was under surveillance. Journalist Glenn Greenwald noted that police can kill a man on the street, anonymously claim that he was radicalized by ISIS and

kill him. Other critics on Twitter noted that the media had run with the story, declaring Rahim a radicalized terrorist based on unnamed sources.

“They have added a national security component to divide and conquer the movement. At the end of the day, a Black man was shot on a bus stop on his way to work and we should treat this like any other case of police violence. All we

want is answers to our questions,” noted Linda Sarsour, an activist with the Justice League in New York CIty.

A Facebook post from Imam Rahim alleges his younger brother Usaama Rahim was shot today on his way to work. The victim who was fatally wounded died in hospital.

Imam Rahim stated, “we are deeply grieved by the loss of my younger brother. While we understand the need for information. We ask that the press give us time to grieve. We will have a statement once we have met as a family.”

Boston is touted at the government’s a CVE (Countering Violent Extremism) model city. The Justice Department launched a pilot program in 2014, aimed at deterring US residents from joining violent extremist groups. Questions that civil rights activists are asking include counter-terrorism tactics that allow for questioning on a street corners without warrants, what law enforcement agencies made up the JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force), which agency is in charge on site, who attempted to "speak" with him, locals, Feds, or both.

Many of the questions were met with ‘no comments’ by authorities at the press conference on Tuesday. Feds do say that Rahim was under 24 hour surveillance for ‘some time’.

“I just watched the FBI Boston press conference on the homicide of Usaama Rahim.

The FBI stated that there was no arrest warrant for him this morning, and that they were merely trying to question him. The FBI didn't state that he committed any crime whatsoever.

They didn't say if they were plain clothes

agents or not. So in other words, they came up on him just after sunrise at a bus stop to talk with him without an arrest warrant nor sufficient evidence to charge him with any crime,” Dawud Walid, Ex. Director of CAIR-MI, noted on his Facebook page.

"We have a number of questions: Why exactly was he being followed? What was the probable cause for this particular stop? Were there any video cameras or body cameras of the incident? How do you reconcile the two versions of the story, the family version being that he was on his normal commute to work at a bus stop?" said Ibrahim Hooper with CAIR.

We are hearing two different narratives of the incident,” said Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates. “The victim’s family has said that Rahim

was shot in the back as he was talking on the phone with his father, while law enforcement officials have claimed he was shot in the front. During a press conference by the FBI and the Boston Police Department soon after the shooting, officials clearly said that there is no ongoing threat in this case to the American people. Given the lack of a continuing threat, the public deserves to understand why police were spying on and fatally shot Rahim. This transparency is critical to gaining trust of law enforcement by communities that are all too often victims of police surveillance and killings.”

In a statement, the Islamic Society of Boston said police have invited Muslim leaders Wednesday to watch surveillance video of the shooting.

Law enforcement at the scene of the shooting of a Muslim man armed with a knife on a Boston street by FBI agents and police. Police claim the man threatened them with the knife, while the man's brother -- an Imam in Boston -- said he was speaking to his father on the phone when the shots were fired and he was killed. Echoes from Athaans Across AmericaThe Muslim Link interviews Jameel Syed on his reflections after giving athaan in all 50 statesJameel Syed , the man who gave adhan in all 50 states is back from his trip. The Muslim Link sat with him to talk about the good, the bad and ugly of the American Muslim scene; lessons learned, trials overcome and moments that shook his soul. The journey lasted 35 days of nonstop travel on 3-5 hours of sleep by car, plane and even in one case – a boat. Accompanied by two campaign managers for part of the trip: Yahya Sultan (35 states) and Jihad Alharash (Syrian American Medical Society for 6 states).

[TML] What did you learn learned about American Muslims in general over the course of your national tour?

People have referred to this trip as a trip of a lifetime, it included travelling across the fifty states with access to prayer spaces in every state. I had the opportunity to step outside my shell and reflect on community development.

The American Muslim landscape is very diverse and rich - we find diversity in demographics, genders, in ideology, make up of leaders, the levels of spirituality and activism; we find a variety at the institutional level— from historical masajid, to holes in the walls, to some that are architectural marvels; some are brilliant examples of community service while others are known for activism and involvement in politics, some masajid are associated with popular imams in the speaker circuit, while others did not have a dedicated imam to lead salah. Some masajid were not even masajid, like Montana doesn't have a masjid- there is a masallah (prayer space). Through the masajid and people you will see a spectrum of community that was very refreshing to see.

From taxi drivers to business moguls, there is so much diversity. I saw this one man at the Fajr prayer in Oklahoma and then saw him again in a masjid in North Dakota a few days later. Turns out that he was a truck driver. I saw refugees everywhere I went. I was introduced to a clutch of doctors in Oklahoma, where there is the highest concentration of Muslim doctors in the US.

I wanted to taste the richness of the American Muslim experience. When we reached out to communities, some knew that we are

coming. As we were driving to the next destination, I would imagine the masjid and the people based on individuals that we are interacting with, the tone of voice, how the phone conversation transpired. I would be building these expectations while we were driving based on the signs on the road, the kind of nature on the roadside, and the surroundings of the neighborhoods, even before we got to each destination. At times I was blown away from how different my expectation were from reality. I remember walking into the front door of the Somali masjid in Kansas City — the smell of oud takes you back to the Haram in (Makkah). When you enter Jonesboro, Arkansas, you are blown away by this jewel of a masjid —the architecture and facility is very unique and were built by students and worshipers. The imam, Imam Harabi, is from Saudi Arabia. That was a very interesting find for us. I was anticipating that Allah will show me His Signs and we would be on attention 24/7, otherwise we will miss something.

My campaign manager, Yahya and I had a difference of opinion on fasting Mondays and Thursdays while we were travelling.

Fasting while traveling is hard with the physical exertion and my teachers had discouraged me from doing so while we were traveling, specifically on this trip. He wanted to fast and he had made his niyyah. We had a long discussion and when we reached our destination he was fasting. As was his routine, he was taking pictures of the exterior of the masjid upon arrival and I had entered already. I was smiling when he came in as I had seen how we were being welcomed into Imam Harabi’s masjid and Yahya was looking at me like what’s going on? There was a dastarkhwan (spread) on the floor with dates and qahwah. It was just before Dhuhr salah.

SubhanAllah, this was a sign that Yahya should break his fast; he would gain the reward of his intended fast and sure enough the imam forced him to break his fast. You had to be there to see the culmination of so many sunnahs being practiced just through this one experience. Yahya went through all the step of doing shurah, making a plan and intention, he tried to execute his plan. He exercised another hadith by accepting the gift of food offered by the host. It was

sublime. There were many such incidents throughout the journey. In Jonesboro, Arkansas, all of us bend to the Sunnah of Rasulullah (Peace and blessings upon him). People who are traveling and hosts both gained reward and this exemplified the essence of this journey, the merits of the journey itself and all the people it touched.

This story will be known to only those people present, until now.

Generally speaking, smaller communities were much more welcoming, generous and hospitable. It was heartwarming to visit these communities. There were some key opinion leaders and celebrity status imams who also laid out the red carpet for us. Imam Siraj Wahaj’s community was the most generous, inviting and well-prepared venue of the fifty states. I stayed with them from Thursday night to Saturday morning. I was one of the judges of a major adhan competition on site customized specifically for my visit. There was even diversity in the lines of communication. Some masjid organizations were equipped with the right people vested with appropriate specialties, who made decisions through proper channels, but then there were organizations we are calling hours before we arrived. One of the more intriguing things about this trip was planning the trip. From choosing between the 5000 masajid in the country– 300+ in New York to none in Montana to deciding how we would travel there and who we would highlight.

Logistically, we were not just visiting the masajid; we had to request permission for video and audio recording, use of their mic system, and photography. We needed a certificate signed, give adhan and a short talk centered around the last sermon of the Prophet (Peace and blessings upon him). So all these things had to be planned out and the response and process was different at each masjid. There was a lot of red tape involved and we expected that. In the spectrum of small to large community, we found that attitudes were also different.

Some very large centers did not conduct themselves appropriately. They were

highly exclusive and in many places we were outright rejected from the masajid despite all of our referrals, credentials and publicity. In their defense, many have been so traumatized by instances of spying or are so paranoid of ‘the threat of radicalization’ that they have become very wary of letting anyone into their masajid. This is a negative development for our communities. He said, “I understand protocol and due diligence, however this contributed to bad branding and the perception of these masajid being exclusive and not inclusive.” Every rejection was an imminent threat towards achieving the highlighted goals of the trip. It was “All or none”.

One president of a large center in South Carolina told us that he wasn’t impressed by our mission and would not open the doors. In Orlando, we were not allowed to continue with our program despite having permission from an imam that we’ve been in contact with at least one month prior to the beginning of the trip. This was also because of how imams are treated within their communities; how much authority they have in the decision making process. I had referrals, from masajid, from Muslim publications, from notable American Muslim leaders, ISNA, my masjid and communities where many people can vouch for us. It was very disheartening.

[TML] What were the reasons?

In some cases we were rejected due to lack of collaboration or organization. ie we were in contact with the imam of the organization but not the decision makers; we faced that situation in Hawaii. We were in communication with the imam there, the imam brought the President into the picture kind of last minute and we forwarded all of our references to them. So we were given permission to make the adhan, but not to give the talk. Fear was another factor. At one of the communities in a “mission critical” state, the Islamic Center was trying to secure some space to build a larger facility; they were scared of media attention that my visit would bring to their project, as it might attract Islamophobia and anti-muslim bigotry in the masjid building process. They didn’t give a nod until the night before on strength of a very strong vote of confidence from many other imams from multiple centers the night before.

[TML] How else did anti-Muslim bigotry affect your trip?

Anti-Muslim bigotry altered the nature of our trip. At first we were going to put up a map on the website with dates and times of where I was going to be. We were going to post live pictures and allow meetups in the different cities that we were visiting, I was going to invite press to follow our journey in real time. When the world got out and an article published about my trip was posted on the CAIR Facebook page, it received a lot of [negative] attention from what I now know to be trolls- anti Islam, Anti Muslim trolls. I started receiving hate mail. I got a text late at night—my name and face was plastered on a right wing hate website. I didn't realize how real Islamophobia was and that was a big wake up call. I am one of those ‘Islamists’ now!

We received many emails and veiled death

threats- so many wanted to know when and where are you coming to my state? “To kill or not to kill a Muslim” article emailed to me. Many Muslim speakers/activists receive this kind of mail, but they were not going for a 50 state trip. That was the exciting and scary thing about this trip— the unpredictability of what we would find. I then immediately did shurah ( a highly valued prophetic tradition) with my family, my lawyer, and the Executive Director of CAIR, Michigan, Dawud Walid. We decided to alter the plans and not make our route public. We also changed our navigation. We delayed our social media posts and decided not go live.

Islamophobia is very real!

[TML] Will you be a changemaker; was this trip a success?

Reporters asked me if my trip will foster change. I asked them what is your matrix

for success. My definition of sucess is to gain spiritual reward from the Creator. I got a Guiness book title from a worldly point of view, but what is success?

Meeting the fathers of Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein and Deah Barakat were the highlights of this trip but also showed me the polarity of American Muslims.

[Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein, 15, almost had his legs severed when a man whom locals said had been harassing the community with anti-Islamic taunts and violent threats apparently swerved his car and ploughed into the boy.] His father is a hafidh and lost a son in this way. It was a very heavy conversation. It was my duty to visit him.“Can I tell you how I raised my son?” he said to me. His son used to kiss him on the shoulder and head and (Jameel was now in tears) he used to ask us every night

before they went to bed: Are you pleased with me? Have I displeased you in any way? I thought to myself what 15 year old kids does that. “I have dedicated myself to this book- this book is the cure,” Abdisamad’s father said to me about the Quran. “If it wasn't for this book I would go mad and [by] reciting and teaching this book, I am able to cope and move forward.” “Muslims and non Muslims across the America and across the world lose their children and we should empathize with them, pray for them and help them however we can”

This is success - I'm not in the business of influencing or imposing, my focus is to deliver the message and deliver it well. I'm helping getting his story out and getting to you and that is what I tell all the mainstream reporters I meet. Tell our real, positive stories.

At the beginning of my trip and then towards the tail end , the verdict of the Boston Bombing, and the Texas hate cartoon contest took place, And I was asked about it by reporters and was able to set some records straight. Bottom line is that there is good and bad in every single community. There are 1.7 billion Muslims, roughly 23% of the world's population and we cannot take the acts of a few misguided people and demonize an entire people. Statistics show people in Boston were not happy with this verdict either. It’s not a pleasant thing when a teenager under any circumstance has to face the death penalty. The city is doing its best to heal from an atrocious event that claimed the lives of non-Muslims and Muslims alike. That is our issue, that we do not amplify the voices to those people of other faiths who agree with our stances.

We have nothing to do with those two men who decided the engage hate with hate. If your mission is to incite hate and insult someone who is more dear to people than their own parents, you will have a response; some will pray for your your guidance. Some will be patient with you and others will respond with a hateful response.

I asked the reporters and the Muslim community. Has anyone followed up with Deah’s and Yusor’s parents and how they are coping with the deaths of their children, after all, some hateful things happened

to them. Shouldn’t we investigate their response and share that with America and the rest of the world? My relatives are very good friends with the Barakat family. So upon landing in North Carolina, they took me to visit them where Deah’s brother and father were renovating this house directly from the airport. They are creating a safe house for women of all faiths who are survivors of domestic violence in the name of the three winners. The man lights up the entire room with his smile— Deah’s father. I made adhan in that place. This is how they are coping— their loved ones were physically harmed and were taken from them. Why isn’t the media covering this? These people don’t want revenge, retribution. They don’t have groups of people that match the profiles of the perpetrators. Their response of one of peace, improving the world and aid/relief for people who are suffering.

How these stories were covered and how people reacted to these stories was also very telling of what is happening within our communities and why the message of the last sermon is so very important. One incident received tremendous attention and the other not so much. Consider the difference in these two families. One lives in a depressed area, the father is not as educated, there are racial differences. The other victims were model citizens, who dedicate their time to relief work, they were college grads and in grad school, their families were well to do. They is a dichotomy on how one received more attention than the other.

We urged all the communities we visited to author and relay our own narratives. But we also asked how is your community making positive contributions towards society at large. How are you making a difference

in the education, social, business and political sectors? Some community leaders were ashamed. They were too busy with offering services to their own community, while others had more of a valid reason, in that they were at the beginning stages of community formation.

When Islamic Centers with multimillion dollar complexes were not doing anything for the larger American community, that was unacceptable. Some of them have enough resources to hire large staff. One Mufti, I met was honest and brave enough to admit that “sadly this is an area we were are lacking.” But then there were gems like Masjid al Suboor in Nevada. The Imam told me that the seed capital was given by Mike Tyson, a fact that majority of the American Muslim community is unaware of. They feed the poor and give shelter to the homeless. They have very actively flipped the entire neighborhood, ended crime, closed up liquor stores. Imam Siraj’s Masjid Taqwa had a 48 hour lock down that resulted in a gang-free and drug free zoned neighborhood. They were even asked by the Jewish community to help set up similar projects. This is the brand of Masjid At-Taqwa in Brooklyn, NY.

Other masajids like the ADAMS Center are extremely politically involved. Rizwan Jaka (Chairman of the ADAMS center) walked into the masjid in his boy scout uniform. This shows the diversity of the American Ummah. He wouldn't make it past the front door in some of the other masajid I visited in that uniform. ADAMS Imam Magid is very traditional in his dress and manners, so we can’t pigeonhole Islam. Jaka’s kids sang America the Beautiful inside the masjid after the Jumuah prayers.

In Alaska and New Mexico, I met native

Muslims, as indigenous as you can get.The strong common denominator in all these communities was the love of the Prophet (Peace be upon him), the reaction, reception and appreciation of the last sermon. The farewell sermon, the speech of all speeches, 23 years of Prophetic Messages distilled in this 2-5 minute speech. It is the most eloquent speech ever to be composed and delivered in the history of humanity. I can honestly say I get goosebumps every time when I relay these golden words. Something to really think about - “May the last ones understand them better than the ones who hear them directly”. The weight and gravity of each of those lines was intense. I have not become desensitized even after reading it so many times , to thousands of people across America (his voice shakes) It addresses gender equity, social and racial justice, equity in business dealings, unity and brotherhood. And people appreciated it. They appreciated him (Peace be upon him), they loved him (Peace be upon him) I could see it in their eyes and I could feel it in the room. Some people started to cry, maybe because they are guilty, maybe they love Allah and/or the Prophet (Peace be upon him), maybe they or their children have started thinking Islam is a violent religion and it dawns on them that this is Islam, that is not Islam. Maybe through these words they’ve found hope or peace...

Sometimes there were 1000s and sometimes there was just one person. One time, I was not allowed to read the sermon to the congregation. I sat down the imam and said okay you have stopped me but you have to listen to me now as I will not be denied. I read it to him in the privacy of his office. Even he bent to the Prophetic words. “I wish we could have hosted you better,” he said. His heart changed. I’m the only person who could see the faces of the thousands of American Muslims react to the final sermon. No book, photo or documentary could capture that. They recognized Islam. Men and women started crying and then you saw how some have tasted this water for the first time and loved it. State 1 to state 50, this was the constant out of the entire trip, the unifier.

The love is still there whether one person or thousands, this became inherently evident to me.

Am I a changemaker, I am asked? Did I set out to become one? At one point I did, we are human. we live and work in the tangible.

Asslamu Alaykum. Yes, it’s true. The Moroccan American Community Association (MACO) Masjid in Falls Church, Virginia is now operating out of a temporary place for some our programs. Our children and the community are overwhelmed with the sudden closing. Alhumdulillah, we found a new building to establish a new community center and Masjid. The cost of the building is $2 million dollars and MACO is in immediate need of $1 million as a down payment. This is an opportunity for SADAQA JARIAH. Please don't let this opportunity slip away from you, and any contribution will make a difference. You may donate by visiting the website www.macous.org and click on donate or by visiting any PNC Bank branch and making a deposit to: Moroccan American Community Center. Account # 5313730752. Please spread our appeal to other concerned Muslims. We have faith in Allah’s help and we have already collected $252,000 Allahu Akbar! Jazakumullahu Khairan.

You feel good when you're making a change and you can see it. Then as I traveled, I stopped caring how many people were there in the congregation. Forget the gimmicks, the flyers, the social media calls, If they are meant to hear the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and if they are meant to respond to adhan, Allah will pull them into the masjid whether they like it or not. My job was not to manage the results, but rather to deliver the message. We had a huge event planned for Masjid Maryam in Houston, Texas, but then we were hot by flash floods the night of my event. The audience was cut down significantly because of the floods. The organizers were upset and were apologetic but I said, Allah brought you here. Whoever was supposed to be here has come and I am grateful this and encouraged by it.

No one is superior from one to the other— you can’t just say those words without internalizing it. I had to ask myself, and

we were tested socially, financially, and I had doubts in my mind. I had to renew my intention at every single masjid and give sadaqah (Charity) for good measure. Did I want a title? Did I want money? What was I actually looking for. I wanted the pleasure of Allah. I wanted my voice as a Muaddhin to touch everything in my path and I wanted to praise the Prophet (Peace be upon him) in a manner which would be deemed worthy.

People get caught up in this popularity notion. What is a prestige point? How many degrees a person has, how much wealth they’ve amassed, which institution they’re affiliated with or how many times they’ve headlined the tabloids? To me the prestige point is to take “The icon of Islam, the Adhan and the kalam (words) of the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) to 50 states and to help and encourage American Muslims to actively do good works and tell everybody about it and we’ll make history doing it. That’s a prestige point for me!

[TML] Is that a fishing pole? Let’s speak in light of Chaplain Tahera Ahmed discrimination incident with United. How

was flying while Muslim?

When I traveled I avoided attracting unnecessary attention and harassment by blending in. On the other hand my companion for 35 states, Yahya, has a long beard and he insisted on opting out from the scanners . Had great discussions with TCA officers while waiting for him to be patted down.We were carrying our banner with us on board and it was in a long and thin case. Old women very nervously asked us is that a fishing pole? Somethings, we didn't have control over, so you have to control what you can control—how do you engage and how do you respond to questions like that.

In certain parts of the country, we were on high alert. But with the protection of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and the prayers of people around the world, we did not have one anti Muslim occurrence. I believe that there are more of those kind of people, The kind of people who offer to pray for you like the Mormon lady I met at the airport who was in solidarity for our mission for advancing prayer.

What was you message to community

leaders?

Our community talks a lot- we moved and executed our plan. I told communities to burn their pamphlets. You can give a thousand lectures and write books, but how much closer is that man to Islam. You have to engage; you have practice Sunnah; you have to greet people. Engage with non Muslims. I did that in airport, taxis and not one negative event happened. Bring positive energy- most people of other faiths were excited for me; this is the reaction we get from most people. I believe that there are more good people in the world than bad people.

One of the tangible results of this tour is that I will be offering two program: History of Adhan and notable muaddhins, teaching the fiqh and Sunnah of Adhan, Training - tajweed and fixing mistakes, right and wrongs 10 steps that a muadhin does before and after adhan, voice training ending with an adhan competition. And after Labor Day, I will be offering communities a two hour presentation-Visual Journey of the 50 states after Labor Day. ([email protected])

This was ICNA’s 40th convention and the theme was honoring the Prophet Muhmmad. 140 speakers from around the world gathered to address thousands. Imam Shibly of the Islamic Society of Central Jersey was at the very first ICNA conventions. He was collating a photo montage of the first congregational prayer where there were exactly 17 people praying and juxtaposing it against the tens of thousands who prayed together at ICNA on the last weekend in May.

This milestone was celebrated by awarding the first lifetime achievement award to Khalid Griggs and Aisha Al-Adawiya. In a statement Imam Griggs, who is the chairman of the Islamic Circle of North America’s Council for Social Justice said, “In these challenging times, this year’s conference offers the attendees a unique opportunity to learn of

the life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and its immediate relevance to their own lives in this country.”

“The Prophet provides the perfect model for us to emulate, as an exemplar of justice, truth, compassion, and love,” said Griggs “Islamophobes malign and

vilify him to spread hate. We want to counter that by spreading knowledge and peace.”

Malika McDonald is the National Director of ICNA Rel ief USA’s transitional housing Network where she oversees the operation of 7 shelter

homes. “What an opportunity; we have 20,000 Muslims coming to Baltimore to really serve the community,” she says. Many people who came to the convention donated items to the ICNA Relief booth. Under McDonald’s supervision of 70 volunteers filled 400 blessing bags with dental kits, socks, lotion, juice, oranges, water, cereal bars, and soup that they deliver to the tent city on the corner of Madison and Falls Way. “A young girl 4 year old girls came out of one of the tents,” shares McDonald. She was so excited about the toothbrush that she had received in the blessing bag.

Fresh fruit donated by a local Whole Foods was stacked in the ICNA relief vans. The bags were also designed and screen-printed in Baltimore city. In a small office above Masjid Saffat is an incubator for youth entrepreneurship

source to your coffee pot. Imam Mikaeel Smith and his wife Ustadha Sarah started Tazkiyah in February 2015. The word Tazkiyah means purity; they believe drinking coffee from sources which oppress farmers contributes to impurity of the soul. And good coffee is included in that as well. The purity of the body and the soul is very much dependent on the purity of that which is placed into the body. So that’s what we are about – pure, clean wholesome coffee.” Coffee connoisseurs can purchase rich Sumatra Aceh Takengon , the floral Tanzanian Peaberry and chocolaty Brazilian, the delicate Panama Geisha, Kenya AA, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, and Colombian S beans ranging from $13- $15 for a 12 oz. brown bag. “Our roasters know the importance of perfection when it comes to coffee. We only roast in small batches to ensure that same taste in every bean.”

Coffee was an Islamic tradition. According to Lost Islamic History, “according to the historical record, in the 1400s coffee became a very popular drink among Muslims in Yemen, in the southern Arabian Peninsula. Legend goes that a shepherd (some say in Yemen, some say in Ethiopia) noticed that his goats became very energetic and jumpy when they ate beans from a

particular tree. He had the courage to try them himself, noticing they gave him an energy boost. Over time, the tradition of roasting the beans and immersing them in water to create a sour yet powerful drink developed, and thus, coffee was born.” The Turks often said it was with this drink with which we memorized the Qu'ran.

“As Muslims we need to think about the spiritual effects of what we are eating and drinking,” says Imam Mikaeel. “The love makes the coffee better, you want to spread that kind of love and share that kind of coffee.” Long-term plans include a café and a bookstore. “Our scholars used coffee with the right intention so they could stay up at night to study and make dhikr.”

Yasmin of Virginia is the creative mind behind Muslamic play rugs. This is the first play rug ever with a masjid and a place to grab halal food made from recyclable, latex free material. Muslamic rugs offer a village, a town, a city and beach scene. The rugs are skid free.

“I got this idea from my two sons, they used to play on the one I had for hours,” says Yasmin. “They always asked me which building is the masjid?” “Now your children can enjoy hours of play in their own little kingdom where they can pass by the masjid on their way home or go shopping at the Halal store, go to school, visit a friend's house, take the bad guys to the police station, or take their ambulance to the hospital.”

She designs the rugs and orders them especially for the Muslim market but

she says that many of her customers on Amazon, where she sells the rugs for $60, are people of other faiths. She was selling them at ICNA for a special price of $45.

Another one of Yasmin’s offerings is the first Islamic baby mobile which plays the Quran and a selection of nashid in Arabic and English. Her product is a soothing alternative to baby mobiles which are usually loaded with musical instruments.

Aqua Bean is a Falls Church based company run by three professionals, including co-founder Sonia Rehman, which makes the revamped American ‘lota’. Rehman, a mother of two, bought and decorated her first home but says when it came to the bathroom, she was stuck with the ‘ugly old-fashioned’ water jug. The idea of modernizing the jug hit her seven years ago. When she was potty-training her boys, it was clumsy for the young hands to use so she redesigned it to have a small handle that is easy for young children to use as well as adults. “The response has been amazing,” says Rehman, who started selling her product two months ago and exhibited them for the first time at ICNA.

“Our safe careers gave us everything we thought we wanted but somehow ceased our ability to achieve something bigger than ourselves. In turn, we decided to utilize our knowledge, risk-taking behavior, and perseverance towards venturing into social entrepreneurship,” state the entrepreneurs. With a vision to protect the environment and to create a nature-friendly toilet experience that will enhance personal hygiene, they

started Aqua Bean. Stylish and user friendly, the lotas (the term used by Indo-Pakistanis for the bathroom water jug) are designed in the USA and made in China. There is a BPA-free plastic variety that retails for $14 and holds 1100 ml, a heavier ceramic version for guest and adult bathrooms (this comes in 6 different colors) and a fold-able travel version made from food grade silicon. The company was incubated in Affinis Lab- geared towards Muslim startups that are trying to improve Muslim life in the United States. Founded by Shahed Amanullah, a former senior adviser for technology at the State Department, and Quintan Wiktorowicz, a former senior director for community partnerships at the White House’s National Security Council, Affinis is currently working with eight businesses nationwide.

Another superb exhibit at the ICNA bazaar was by Wafa Islamic Arts. Ouafae Taame is a video game designer extraordinaire and an artist who specializes in Digital Arts, Islamic Arts, and Calligraphy—trained at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tétouan, Morocco. She is a former senior artist and art director at Ubisoft, where she worked on popular games sold around the world, including Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia. She creates crisp, clean custom Islamic art for her online store- Wafa Islamic Art, where she also sells stencils, framed prints and canvas. Taame also teaches Islamic Art classes in her studio in Maryland and sells canvases of her art online and at conventions. Recently her work was auctioned and received rave reviews at the Howard County based Tarbiyah Academy fundraiser.

called Citywide Youth Entrepreneurship Program, run by community activist Rashid Aziz. Aziz owns the sorbet store next to Masjid Saffat- Frozen Desert Sorbet. The youth in his program helped develop the flavors and they opened a second location in Lexington Market on May 22, 2015. Many young men in the community are unemployed and this program gives them a chance to learn skills and provides summer jobs. The vending carts that were selling drinks and ice cream to convention attendees were also a part of the program.

McDonald’s says that ICNA and other national organizations are partnering with the Muslim Social Services Agency. “They are from the community and they know what their needs are,” she adds.

In exciting news for Baltimore residents, ICNA has partnered with Nadia McIntosh to support the Women’s Affairs at Al Mumtahinah – a homeless shelter. “Our aim is to make sure that this facility also

runs at the same level of transparency and standards as the others,” shared McDonald.

For mid to long term relief work, ICNA has hired Saad Malik as the ICNA relief manager for Baltimore as well as a representative in Washington DC.

ICNA has temporary housing in the following states: Anaheim, CA, Atlanta, GA, Baton Rouge, LA, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI, Houston, TX, Jamaica, NY, Kansas City, MO, Miami, FL, Orlando, FL, Phoenix, AZ and has a new women’s center opening up in Massachusetts– the Amal Women’s Center. The 13th shelter was once the home of the first Sister Clara Muhammad School in Massachusetts and also served as the minister’s home.

McDonald says that there has been a sharp rise in the refugee population that ends up in transitional housing. Trained case managers work with residents in each of the centers identifying areas of growth and link them to appropriate community resources such as public benefits, legal and immigration support, mental health

services and healthcare. Plans are in place to track beneficiaries as ICNA.

It’s a pure family event says Dr Zahid Bukhari, past President of ICNA, whose own family has made life long friends who meet up during the convention weekend.

This was the second year that ICNA used community volunteers who signed up for this task, said Mahmoud Aijazi, the ICNA volunteer coordinator. He was assisted on the women’s side, ICNA-Sisters Wing leaders Nosheen Owais, Amna and Kulsoom Siddiqui.

Another new feature was the solitary confinement cell set up by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NCRAT) to bring awareness to how prisoners stay isolated for 23 hours. “Psychologists say prolonged solitary confinement can drive prisoners insane. But tens of thousands of U.S. prisoners are currently held in isolation.” Many Muslim prisoners are subjected to this form of torture. NCRAT shared that 1000 convention attendees sat inside the demo cell.

Convention attendees also benefited from the free ICNA-MAS Convention mobile application. The app offered several features like creating personal program schedule, bios of all the speakers, a map of the bazaar, instant program updates and ‘a convenient way to follow convention tweets.’

Noha AlAnsary, a student at University of Maryland College Park says she loved all the lectures that she went to at ICNA this year. “However, there was one problem, many people got upset because the couldn’t attend the lectures that they wanted as the halls filled up so fast. Bukhari says that there was a huge increase in attendees over last year.

Shabana and her husband had traveled from Bangalore, India and attended many sessions at ICNA. They especially enjoyed the poetry recital in Urdu and the lectures by Shaykh Yusuf Islahi. ICNA offers sessions in Urdu, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish. At the last day of the convention, she joined her daughter and her family, excited to implement all that she had learned.

abandoned by smugglers who had promised them safety.

News also came in of discovery of mass graves and the human trafficking of the Rohingya. Malaysian and Thai authorities announced the discovery of smugglers’ camps with watchtowers, crude cages of sticks and barbed wire, and nearly 140 graves.

While some charities, such as Partners for Relief, raised money for immediate relief by hiring boats to look for the Rohingya at sea and feed them, here in the United States the Burma Task Force is working on policy changes aimed at stopping the genocide.

As previously reported in the Muslim Link, mil l ions e thnic Rohingya Muslims have been wiped out from Myanmar. These are indigenous people of the area who were included in Myanmar af ter borders were officially drawn.

Despite having historic ties that span generations and centuries to the land of Burma, the Rohingya people were rendered stateless in 1982 by a highly stratified citizenship law that did not recognize Rohingya as one of Burma’s natural citizenry, and thereby legitimate, ethnicities. As a result, the Rohingya people have been incorrectly and unjustly classified as foreigners or ‘Bengali’ in their own homeland. The Citizenship Law of 1982 has since become the grounds for the rising tide of anti-Muslim bigotry in Burma.

Rohingya are systematically denied citizenship, be forced into manual labor by the government, they are forbidden to marry without official permission, prohibited from attending public high schools, cannot work for the government or be voted into public office, the government restricts their movement within Rakhine state and beyond its borders.

Abdul Malik Mujahid, chairman of the Burma Task Force USA, held

a phone town hall meeting on May 23, 2015, to answer questions and gauge support for statements prior to the Oslo conference co-sponsored by BTF. The taskforce is a coalition of 19 Muslim organizations. Attendees were able to agree or disagree with stances.

H e i n f o r m e d p a r t i c i p a n t s t h a t approximately 3000 Rohingya have been rescued but 500-600 are leaving Rakhine state everyday. Mujahid called

it a slow burning genocide or hidden genocide. According to Mujahid, the only long term solution to the crisis is to guarantee Rohingya their citizenship and rights in Myanmar. “Your calls to politicians work; your phone calls save lives,” he said sharing the results of BTF’s 10 minute a day campaign.

He applauded the work of Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) and warned that very few

humanitarian organizations have been given access to the Rohingya. Currently there is one doctor for every 80,000 Rohingya in Myanmar.

On May 19, 2015 the government of Turkey dispatched a Turkish Navy ship to the coast off Thailand and Malaysia where thousands of Rohingya Muslims are stranded at sea. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said that Turkey

was exerting efforts to reach out to the people aboard with a Navy vessel and in coordination with the International Organization for Migration.

On May 20, 2015, the Indonesian and Malaysian governments gave in to intense pressure and offered temporary shelter. "Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to continue to provide humanitarian assistance to those 7,000 irregular migrants still at sea," Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said alongside his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsude.

The Burma Task Force has asked the American Muslim community to make Rohingya Muslims their Ramadan focus. From making dua for them privately and publicly during Taraweeh, to raising awareness and funds for the action alert campaigns that they organize for the Rohingya. Help is also needed in maintaining and augmenting the email listserv and

Through the work of the task force, the US is the only country in the world that has a bill directed towards the plight of the Rohingya. ‘In 2014, Congress sent a clear message via House Resolution 418, calling on the Myanmar government to protect all its people, including the Rohingya.’

The Oslo Conference to End Myanmar’s Persecution of the Rohingya was held at the Norwegian Nobel Institute and Voksenaasen, Oslo, Norway on May 26 and 27, 2015. At the conference Archbishop Desmond Tutu described the persecution of the Rohingya as slow genocide. His thoughts were shared by six other fellow Nobel Peace Laureates: Mairead Maguire, Jody Williams, Tawakkol Karman, Shirin Ebadi, Leyman Gbowee and Adolfo Perez Esquivel. According to the United Nations definition of genocide, international law makes it incumbent on governments to intervene once a genocide has been declared.

In a jo in t s ta tement , the Nobel laureates said “what Rohingyas are

facing is a textbook genocide in which an entire indigenous community is being systematically wiped out by the Burmese government.”

In a statement of support, multi-billionaire George Soros stated that what he witnessed happening to the Rohingya reminds him of the Nazi-occupied Hungary from his childhood.

According to a statement, after two days of deliberations the conference

issued the following urgent appeal to the international community. “The pattern of systematic human rights abuses against the ethnic Rohingya people entails crimes against humanity including the crime of genocide; the Myanmar government’s denial of the existence of the Rohingya as a people violates the right of the Rohingya to self-identify; the international community is privileging economic interests in Myanmar and failing to prioritize the need to end its systematic

persecution and destruction of the Rohingya as an ethnic group.”

As conditions become so atrocious that Muslims and non-Muslim celebrities finally begin shining the spotlight on the plight of the Rohingya, they continue to wait for justice.

National News4th annual Ramadan date boycott has broad-based appeal By American Muslims for Palestine (WASHINGTON DC 05/29/2015) -- The American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), a national education and advocacy organization, has launched its fourth annual Israeli Occupation Date boycott in time for Ramadan, which starts in mid-June. The campaign, which is an answer to the 2005 Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions, is geared toward American Muslims, one of the largest consumer groups of Israeli dates in the United States. Instead of buying dates grown in Israeli settlements built on stolen Palestinian land, AMP encourages people to “buy American,” and offers links to date farms in the Bard Valley in California. Date brands to boycott are Jordan River, Jordan River Bio-Tops, King Solomon and any dates bearing the logos from distributors Hadiklaim or Mehadrin. “Sometimes consumers think they’re buying from Palestinian when they see brands like Jordan River,” said Osama Abuirshaid, policy analyst and director of AMP’s Washington DC office. “Our goal is to educate and raise awareness about how settlements detrimentally impact Palestinians and to encourage people to embrace BDS, a tool to force Israel to comply with international law.” Israel is the world’s largest exporter of the Medjool date variety; and imports into the United States were valued at about $51 million in 2011, according to the USDA. Most of these date farms are located in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea area, both now under Israeli occupation. Because the occupation has decimated the Palestinian economy, many Palestinians are forced to work on these settlement farms under harsh conditions, for substandard pay and with no job security.

In a process called “distributing monkeys,” Israeli contractors often place Palestinian workers, even children as young as 10, on the tops of 40-foot-high date palms and then leave them there for an entire nine-hour shift. Workers hang on with one arm and pick dates with the other. They even eat their lunches this way, according to a 2006 investigation by Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz. The article, “Dates of Infamy” exposes labor violations and human rights abuses. The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics has said that nearly 7,000 Palestinian children, ages 5-7 years old, worked in settlements in 2008. "As soon as I climb up the tree, the only thing I think about is how to get down from it," the Haaretz article quotes a worker from Jiftlik. "I don't think about anything other than how not to fall out of the tree and how to manage to complete the quota. I know that at any moment I

Running for the Hills

“Horsing Around”By Jann McClaryMuslim Link Contributing Writer

In May of 2011, Sister Jann McClary and her husband Tariq moved from the Washington DC metropolitan area to establish a new home in the mountains of Colorado, building it from the ground up as part of their plan to become free of the spiritual and physical stress of modern urban life. Sister Jann is documenting her experiences for the Muslim Link. See her earlier installments at www.muslimlinkpaper.com by searching for “Running for the Hills”. Make sure you select “Exact Phrase” in the search options. – TML

Drive around in the city or suburbs for just a few minutes and you're bound to see pacing in the yard, dozing on the front porch, yelping from the passenger seat of a car, or peeking out of the top of an oversized purse, a dog. No longer necessary as working animals, with a few exceptions, most have become surrogate children. Status symbols. Coping mechanisms for whatever new neurosis plagues their human owners.

Drive around for an hour or so in the country and you're bound to see nibbling on grass, head bent intently to the ground, a horse. No longer necessary as working animals, unless you're Amish, most have been relegated to little more than lawn ornaments. Status symbols. Accessories to the ranch.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "Keeping horses may be a source of reward to some (man), a shelter to another (i.e. means of earning one's living), or a burden to a third. He to whom the horse will be a source of reward is the one who keeps it in Allah's cause and ties it by a long rope in a pasture (or a garden). He will get a reward equal to what its long rope allows it to eat in the pasture or the garden, and if that horse breaks its rope and crosses one or two hills, then all its foot-steps and its dung will be counted as good deeds for its owner; and if it passes by a river and drinks from it, then that will

also be regarded as a good deed for its owner even if he has had no intention of watering it then. Horses are a shelter from poverty to the second person who keeps horses for earning his living so as not to ask others, and at the same time he gives Allah's right (i.e. zakat) (from the wealth he earns through using them in trading etc.,) and does not overburden them. He who keeps horses just out of pride and for showing off and as a means of harming the Muslims, his horses will be a source of sins to him...” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Obviously, there was a time when horses were more valued and cared for than a souped-up SUV with 4-wheel drive, low miles and a 40-mpg engine. Horses performed every task from hauling commercial goods, pulling political billboards, hearses and logs, to chauffeuring the public through town, bringing in the harvest, or tearing down the street hitched to a fire wagon! Or charging into battle with a sahabah on its back.

Narrated Ibn Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "There is always goodness in horses till the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

We want a horse. And a wagon. No, really, I'm serious. Why do we, in 2015, clearly inhabitants of the 21st century, want a form of transportation

that harkens back to, oh, let's see, the 19th century? Why wouldn't we want to be surrounded by molded fiberglass and a little metal, snuggled against polystyethyldioxycellulon seating, gliding down the highway on $200-dollar tires, heading to the auto repair shop to pay $40 for an oil change? Why wouldn't

we want to pay $83 each year to register our little mechanical beast, whom we affectionately call “Chico” and $35 each month to insure it, and more than $50 each week to gas it up, and who-knows-

how-much-if-something-major blows? Because Allah's Messenger said, “There is always goodness in horses till the Day of Resurrection." Don't get me wrong, horses ain't cheap neither! There's vet bills, and bales of hay, the cost of tack (bridles, harnesses and the like), and horse shoeing, and did I mention bales of hay?

What horses and SUVs like Chico have in common is their tendency to guzzle. Fill up an SUV's tank and you'd almost swear it's either bottomless or there's a secret vacuum feature the car salesman didn't mention that let's money be sucked directly, neatly and continuously from your bank account. Even when you're not at the pump. Horses, it left to their own devices, will eat their ration of hay, the hay in the next stall, whatever hay is not tied down and out of their reach, and whatever vegetation looks like it might be hay out in the pasture. They have no clue how to “just say no.”

Now, we're not naive enough to believe a horse will solve our modern transportation woes. The horse itself has a few potential drawbacks; too much personality, for one. Chico won't give you “that look” when you ask it to start. Chico won't nonchalantly move when you're getting ready to get in it. But a horse might wait until you have one foot in the stirrup before taking a step forward, backward or sideways, leaving you hopping like a fool on the other foot while you're frantically trying to hang on to the saddle horn with one hand. Chico wouldn't be so intentionally mischievous. But then again, Chico won't cozy up to you and affectionately nibble your hair, or gently bump its head against your shoulder for attention. You won't feel its warm, steamy breath on your hand as you offer it a treat. Any SUV just sits. And waits. No personality whatsoever other than however you've tricked it out with sport rims, tinted windows, custom paint, and tangles of tacky little tchotchkes hanging from the rear view.

Add a wagon to the cost of your little hay-muncher and you're getting close to the cost of a good used vehicle. Either you buy a fixer-upper wagon for a song-and-a-dance and refurbish it DIY-style, buy a

decent used one for a low four figures, or if you've come into that inheritance, pick out a customized buck wagon complete with LED lights, padded seats, hydraulic brakes and your choice of auto-quality paint colors.

There's definitely a trade-off here, and your lifestyle, location and tolerance for lampooning glances will determine whether you can cut it with the horse-and-buggy crowd, of which you will most likely be the only one. Unless you're Amish. So we have to weigh the pros and

cons: The convenience of the gas station until peak oil hits, or monthly runs to the feed store. High vet bills, or highway robbery from the folks who claim you're in good hands. Longing for the latest model, or brushing a long mane after a morning ride. Whizzing down the road oblivious to what's around you, or taking in the scenery on a lazy stroll into town. Horses can go where cars can't, and can provide you with companionship along the way. Cars can go faster and longer, but at a higher cost to the environment. Horses can reproduce themselves. As of

this writing, technology hasn't allowed motor vehicles to do the same.

We may get the horse and wagon one day, insha Allah. But we also may keep Chico even if we get the wagon. Both have their specific advantages, their barakaat. But you gotta know that a horse is as off-road as you can get, and one day we may need that kind of maneuverability. So for now, we keep Chico fed and watered and it happily takes us where we need to go. But there is always goodness in horses till the Day of Resurrection. Alhamdulillah.

June 5th - July 2nd, 201528 | CIVIL RIGHTS

Civil RightsCivil RightsCivil RightsThe GOP's Embrace of Anti-Islamic BigotryBy Peter BeinartThe Atlantic, May 26, 2015

In important ways, America in recent years has become a less bigoted country. In today’s U.S. Senate, there is no equivalent to Jesse Helms, who during his 1984 reelection race filibustered a federal holiday for Martin Luther King and his 1990 reelection race aired an ad showing a pair of white hands crumpling a job rejection letter as the narrator declared that “they had to give it to a minority because of a racial quota.”

In today’s Republican presidential field, there is no equivalent to Pat Buchanan, who won the 1996 New Hampshire primary after having asked, “Who speaks for the Euro-Americans who founded the U.S.A.?” and having declared that “women are simply not endowed by nature with the same measures of single-minded ambition and the will to succeed in the fiercely competitive world of Western capitalism …. The momma bird builds the nest. So it was, so it ever shall be.” Even the politicians who still wish to deny gays and lesbians equal-marriage rights now insist desperately that they harbor them no malice.

To hear some conservatives tell it, the last group against whom one can practice socially acceptable bigotry is, well, them: white, straight, native-born, right-wing Christians, against whom the federal government is waging a “silent war,” as Bobby Jindal alleges, that may lead to the “criminalization of Christianity,” as Mike Huckabee warns.

But I suspect that if a presidential candidate trafficked in prejudice against conservative white evangelicals, his candidacy would abruptly end.

The same, sadly, does not seem to be true of appeals to suspicion of Muslims. Republican presidential hopeful Lindsey Graham said earlier this month that “Everything that starts with ‘Al’ in the Middle East is bad news.” (Al is the Arabic equivalent of “the”). Graham, it’s worth remembering, is running as the foreign-policy intellectual in the GOP field.*

Why do such comments attract so little outrage? Because while American politicians have become less overtly bigoted against African Americans, Latinos, Jews, women and lesbians and gays, anti-Muslim bigotry is still entirely acceptable, at least in the GOP.

Among Graham’s opponents for the Republican nomination is Mike Huckabee, who in 2011 said Christians shouldn’t rent space in their churches to Muslims because “Muslim group[s]” say “that Jesus Christ and all the people that follow him are a bunch of infidels

who should be essentially obliterated.” And who this February declared that, “Everything [Obama] does is against what Christians stand for, and he’s against the Jews in Israel. The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community.”

Another likely contender is Rick Santorum, who last November accused presidents Bush and Obama of having given “all Muslims a pass” and in 2011 announced that equality “doesn’t come from Islam. It doesn’t come from the East and Eastern religions. It comes from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” (Evidently, Santorum thinks Ur Kasdim is a city in Pennsylvania.) They will all likely square off against Bobby Jindal, who earlier this year kept saying Europe contained “no go” zones from which non-Muslims were barred even after Fox News retracted the claim.

All these candidates walk in the

footsteps of 2012 contenders like Newt Gingrich, who warned that, “Sharia is a mortal threat to the survival of freedom in the United States ,” and Herman Cain, who ruled out appointing a Muslim to his cabinet. Neither Gingrich nor Cain lost significant support as a result of these comments. Nor have Huckabee, Santorum, Jindal, or Graham. Which is not surprising when one realizes that 39 percent of likely Republican Iowa caucus-goers see Islam as inherently violent. (Among Democrats, the figure is one-third as high).

To be fair, not all the Republicans running for president indulge in anti-Muslim bigotry. In 2011, Mitt Romney publicly rejected the idea that Islam is inherently violent. In New Jersey, Chris Christie nominated a Muslim attorney to be a superior court judge and even denounced the “gaze of intolerance that is going around our country” when it comes to Muslims.

Let’s hope Christie keeps denouncing Islamophobia on the campaign trail, and that other Republican candidates join in. Right now, the GOP field is often described as divided between conservat ives and moderates or libertarians and social conservatives. With any luck, a public divide will break out between candidates who demonize American Muslims and those who defend their rights. In today’s GOP, sadly, that would constitute progress.

Córdoba Controversy: Historic Mosque-Cathedral Mired In Cultural DisputeIn Spain, a dispute breaks out over a medieval Islamic place of worship turned Catholic churchBy Guy HedgecoeAljazeeera, May 24, 2015

CÓRDOBA, Spain – Inside Córdoba’s Mosque-Cathedral, a young woman in a Muslim headscarf is taking a hurried selfie in front of the monument’s Catholic altar. Just a few yards away, in the building’s Muslim section, some European tourists are admiring a set of Islamic arches.

It’s a scene that is reminiscent of this southern Spanish city’s celebrated past, the kind of multiculturalism that made it a world-renowned symbol of knowledge and religious coexistence in medieval times.

“This place belongs to Muslims and Christians,” says Muhammad Anggia Muchtar, a Muslim university lecturer from Indonesia who is visiting as part of a two-week trip around Europe.

“Here, people from different religions socialized in harmony and lived in peace,” he says, adding that the Mosque-Cathedral preserves history and that "when you know your history, you know your roots.”

On a hot May afternoon, he is sitting in the shade in the monument’s inner courtyard, a large, tranquil space filled with orange trees and birdsong. But despite this calm scene, the Mosque-Cathedral is currently the focus of a fierce dispute pitting local activists against the Catholic Church and casting a shadow over Córdoba’s legacy of religious tolerance. It has even become a hot-button issue in local elections here amid accusations that the Mosque-Cathedral’s Islamic past is being airbrushed out of history.

Muhammad is one of around 1.5 million people who visit the monument each year from around the world, drawn by its unique history. Standing on the site of Visigoth ruins, its construction began in 785, at the start of several centuries of North African Muslim presence in

Spain and Portugal. By the 10th century, the Great Mosque had helped Córdoba become a hugely influential hub of learning. It was also notable for the fact that it was the home to Catholic and Jewish communities, who were tolerated by the majority Muslim population.

When Christians re-conquered Córdoba, they built a Catholic cathedral, completed in 1236 in the heart of the Great Mosque. Still towering over the picturesque, narrow streets of central Córdoba, the entire building has since then been administered by the local Church authorities and only Christian worship is allowed inside.

In 1984, UNESCO awarded the monument and its surrounding neighborhood World Heritage Site status, describing the Great Mosque as “an irreplaceable testimony of the Caliphate of Córdoba and […] the most emblematic monument of Islamic religious architecture.”

But recently, many people in Córdoba are dismayed at what they see as the Catholic Church’s attempted appropriation of the monument.

Two decades ago, it was described as the “Mosque-Cathedral” in official literature and tourist brochures, a term that acknowledged its shared heritage. In 1998, the Catholic authorities changed that to the “Cathedral (former Mosque)” and since 2010 it has been simply “Córdoba Cathedral.”

“They have tried to change the history of the monument, the name of the monument and to appropriate the monument’s symbols,” says Miguel Santiago, a local high school teacher who heads a grassroots association, La Plataforma Mezquita-Catedral, patrimonio de tod@s (The Mosque-Cathedral, a heritage for all), which has been campaigning against the changes since early 2014.

“The really fundamental thing about the monument is its Islamic-Andalusian art, but the literature describes this as if it were merely an Islamic intervention.”

Tourist brochures devote relatively little space to the monument’s Islamic period, which they do indeed describe as an “intervention”. One of the periods of Islamic construction is summarized as “an ostentatious display of power, though … not very original”.

But the platform is not just campaigning against the use of language. It also says the Catholic Church has taken the Mosque-Cathedral out of public hands by taking advantage of a loophole in property legislation and registering itself as the sole owner of the building.

Santiago (who describes himself as a Catholic) and his fellow campaigners have gathered nearly 400,000 signatures to “save the Córdoba Mosque” on change.org. Signatories include British architect Norman Foster and acclaimed Spanish novelist, Juan Goytisolo.

The issue has also entered the domestic political arena. In the campaign ahead of May 24 municipal elections, four leading candidates for mayor of Córdoba debated the status of the Mosque-Cathedral. Of the main parties, only the conservative Popular Party, which governs Spain and Córdoba and has close links to the Catholic Church, was absent.

All four candidates criticized the Church’s actions, with the most outspoken, Rafael Velazquez, of the left-leaning Podemos party, drawing parallels with George Orwell’s "1984" as he lambasted the “rewriting of history” in Córdoba.

Also mentioned in the debate was the Mosque-Cathedral’s brief name change on Google Maps last November, when it mysteriously became simply “Córdoba Cathedral,” before being swiftly changed back to “Córdoba Mosque-Cathedral” after a public outcry. The Church denies any knowledge of the glitch, while La Plataforma Mezquita-Catedral suspects it was deliberately engineered.

But according to the Catholic Church,

the entire controversy has been whipped up artificially and with no foundation. In his office opposite the site, the canon of the holy Cathedral of Córdoba, José Juan Jiménez, says the name change is not important, as his parishioners tend to describe the building as both “the cathedral” and “the mosque” anyway.

“We haven’t had any confrontation over religious issues here since the [Christian] re-conquest,” he says, adding that the Church fully respects the building’s

Muslim heritage.

Jiménez attributes the campaign against the Church’s actions to anti-Catholic feeling. “In Spain, in the democratic period there have been movements, always on the political left, which are hostile to everything the Church represents,” he says.

As for the Church’s alleged appropriation of the monument as its own property, Jiménez insists that it has been the owner

since the 13th century, and that all it is doing now is registering itself as such.

But while he plays down the causes of the furor, he admits its effects could be damaging – to tourist revenues, but also to the city’s broader image.

“This could lead to a split, or give the impression that the peaceful coexistence

between religions has been broken,” he says.

Arguably, that coexistence is already showing signs of strain, with the debate about the Mosque-Cathedral spilling over into the broader issue of Spain’s relationship with its Islamic past and its modern-day Muslim community.

In December 2014, the Is lamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), with 52 member states, described the name change as “an attempt to obliterate the landmarks of Islamic history in Andalusia and a provocation for Muslims around the

world, especially Muslims of Spain.”

In March, a small right-wing party, Vox, published online a faux TV news report imagining Córdoba in 2018, with the Mosque-Cathedral having been expropriated by left-wing politicians and ceded to Muslims for their exclusive use.

“In the next few years, it is estimated that more than two million Muslims could move to Córdoba and other cities in Andalusia in order to reconnect with their past and their culture,” says a bogus woman news reporter, wearing a headscarf.

“Do you want a future like that?” the video asks at the end.

Enrique Rubio, a Córdoba-based Vox politician, says his party is determined

that the Mezquita-Cathedral should remain Catholic and that the ongoing polemic “is driven by political motives.” He adds: “There are those who say there could be Islamic states behind all this – Iran or Saudi Arabia, for example.”

This kind of defensiveness over the monument on the part of Catholics is frequently echoed on Internet forums and social networks and seems to have been further fueled by the statements of some extremist groups. Both Al-Qaeda and ISIL (the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIS) have repeatedly called for Al-Andalus, the medieval name for Spain and Portugal when they were under Islamic control, to be reclaimed. Photos posted on social networks recently showed the ISIL flag being held up in front of several landmarks from Spain’s Islamic past.

“In spite of the claims made by ISIS or other groups, none of which represent Muslims as a whole in Spain, I think there’s virtually no one in Spain who is demanding that the Córdoba Mosque be returned to Muslims,” says Laure Rodriguez Quiroga, of Red Musulmana, an organization which represents Spanish Muslim women.

The often furious debate surrounding the Mosque-Cathedral, she says, reflects a worrisome rise in “Islamophobic attitudes” in general across Spain.

What both sides of this argument cannot deny is that while the monument’s beauty still draws visitors from around the world, its luster as an example of religious coexistence has been tarnished.

Get Ready to Welcome a Dear Friend – RamadanBy Javaid Siddiqi, ICNA

Alhamdullilah, Allah has blessed us to witness and reach another Ramadan. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) has called this month – a blessed month and a great month

Allah Glorified and Exalted be He says in Surat Al-Baqara [2:143]: “And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people …”

The responsibility of being witnesses over the people is what is at stake here. The higher the goal, the more difficult and rigorous is the training. To become a navy seal, you are required to go through extremely difficult training. To enter into space an astronaut goes through a long and hard physical and mental training before being qualified to take up the responsibility. Similarly, to be a witness over the people, one has to reach a level of piety, maturity and love for Allah Glorified and Exalted be He and His prophet, which is no small task. You are being prepared to be able to withstand physical, mental and emotional challenges. For this assignment you are

required to exhibit amazing levels of selflessness, sacrifice of time and wealth and will be required to endure great hardship. All this only for the pleasure of Allah Glorified and Exalted be He and attainment of eternal life in Paradise.

It is from the mercy of Allah Glorified and Exalted be He that opportunities to train for this great task are presented to the believer during their life over and over

again. The fact that the believer stands to gain so much from this season, makes the preparation for this ever more important.

What we must understand as we prepare for this season

In the Qur'an Allah Glorified and Exalted be He presents some of the most beautiful metaphors and parables which gives us great insight on how to prepare for this blessed season. In Surat Al-Hajj, Allah Glorified and Exalted be He says: “… And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful kind” [22:5]

These verses from Surat Al-Hajj and several others use the metaphor of rain, which when falls on the right piece of land produces vegetation of trees, flowers and fruits that benefit everyone. Through this metaphor Allah Glorified and Exalted be He is inviting the believers to prepare the land (their hearts and soul) for this rain (guidance) that has been sent to them in this blessed month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is analogous to the season of spring. In this month, a believer

prepares the garden by removing the weeds, seeding the soil and watering the ground in hopes of beautiful flowers and tasty fruits later in the year.

The same goes for the heart of a believer. The more prepared the heart is, the better it is able to receive and retain this divine guidance. A deep understanding of this aspect of purification of the heart goes a long way in attaining our goals during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Now, let us focus on how to achieve this purification and what simple steps can we take to reach our goals. Br. Khurram Murad has presented the following 10 actions in his famous booklet about Ramadan. The following 10 tips can be helpful in reaching this goal:

Intention & Determination

Intention creates the desire, the consciousness and the determination; which in turn produces the required efforts for a task or goal. At the start of this Ramadan, make the intention of attaining the piety (Taqwa) which is the goal of the month of fasting. Have the intention of reaching this level of piety through your fasting, worship (Ibadat) and all the planned special activities during this month. To achieve, this goal, it may be beneficial to dedicate some private time before the first day or on the first day of Ramadan and make Hamd & Istighfar to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. Send salutations on the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam and ask Allah Glorified and Exalted be He to assist you in this endeavor. Making Duaa with focus and concentration can help you attain the proper mindset. Relationship with the Qur'an

Make special arrangements during this month for recitation, listening, understanding and pondering on the verses of Qur'an. Spend as much time

as possible in the company of Qur'an. Attending Taraweeh regularly is a great opportunity to complete listening to the Qur'an at least once during Ramadan. If you don’t understand the Arabic language, you should make every effort to understand a set portion with translation and tafseer. If following the translation for an entire Juz is not possible, dedicate time to follow some portion of a Juz. Alternatively, you can plan to complete the reading with translation within one year and before the next Ramadan. In our day and age, the Internet has opened an unlimited number of opportunities for learning and understanding of Qur'an from the comfort of our homes. Stay Away from Sin

Make a special effort to stay away from any and all types of sins. In this month, believers are given special protection from the devil (Shaytan), which we should take advantage of by promoting and increasing our closeness to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. The farther we are from sin, the closer we get to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam reminded us in his famous Hadith that “Fasting acts as a shield from sins, so use it as a shield. The fasting person should not curse anyone, yell and badmouth anyone. If someone curses him or fights with him,

At the start of this Ramadan, m a k e t h e i n t e n t i o n o f

attaining the piety (Taqwa) which is the goal of the month of fasting.

Spend as much time as possible in the company of

Qur'an.

he should move away by saying, “I am fasting. I can’t be part of bad deeds” – related by Bukhari and Muslim. We can gradually and consciously correct our bad habits – for example, we can decide to consciously lower our voice and avoid yelling, screaming or fighting during this Ramadan. Also we should avoid mentioning negative things about people in their absence. Make a special effort to guard your tongue during this month. Make a habit every night to assess your day before going to sleep. Make immediate Istighfar and repent if you have committed a sin during your day. Seek Good Deeds

A believer should always be seeking opportunities to perform and engage in good deeds. During the month of Ramadan the reward for every good deed (Nawafil) rises to the level of the reward of obligatory acts (Faraidh). We should seek all such opportunities in worship (Ibaadat) and relationships (Muamalat ). When a believer goes beyond the obligatory acts (Faraidh) and hastens to perform the optional (Nawafil) it shows his eagerness to please Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. These are the believer about whom Allah Glorified and Exalted be He relates in the Hadith Qudsi related by Abu Hurayrah (Allah be pleased with him) that such people become so dear to Allah that Allah becomes the eyes through which they see; He becomes the ears through which they hear; He becomes the feet through which they walk, and the tongue through which they speak. In this Ramadan decide on any three (3) or more good deeds that you will consistently perform to attain this special nearness to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. Qiyam al-layl

To stand the night in prayer and recite from the Book of Allah is one of the most effective methods of attaining the consciousness of Allah (Taqwa). Allah Glorified and Exalted be He praises these believers in Surat Al-Dhariyat [51:18]: “And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness..” Taraweeh is considered to be part of Qiyam al-layl. Believers are also encouraged to wake up and pray during the second part or the 3rd part of the night right before

dawn. We can be among those who are mentioned in the above verse of Qur'an by simply waking up 15-20 minutes before Suhoor and performing two rakaat Nafil prayers. Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah’s Messenger Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said: ‘In the last third of every night Allah Glorified and Exalted be He descends to the lowermost heaven and says; “Who is calling Me, so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that may I grant him? Who is seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?.”‘ [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Qudsi]. This and many of the following verses are a great

inspiration for the believers to stand in prayer during the night.

“Is one who worships devoutly during the hours of night prostrating himself or standing [in adoration] and who places his hope in the mercy of His Lord – [like one who does not]? Say: ‘Are those equal – those who know and those who do not know?’ It is those who are endowed with understanding that receive admonition.” [Az-Zumar 39:9] Zikr and Duaa

Remembrance of Allah is important

throughout our lives, but is even more important during the month of Ramadan. Making a special effort to keep the remembrance of Allah, especially with your tongue is a source of great reward. This act keeps Allah in your thoughts constantly. A constant Zikr of Allah and his praise (Tahmeed & Tahleel) are one of the best of ways of reaping rewards during this month. As we make Duaa to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He, we perfect our conviction and belief – that He is the only one who can fulfill our needs, wants and desires. Extending our hands in complete devotion any time of the day or night and at specific times such as the time of breaking of fast (Iftar) would be a source of Allah’s mercy and acceptance. Make a special effort to memorize some of the Azkar and Adiyah and frequently repeat them throughout the day. Night Vigil on the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr) & Itikaf

On this night the Qur'an was revealed. The status of this night was clearly stated in the famous verses of Surat Al-Qadar: “The Night of Decree (a.k.a. The Night of Power) is better than a thousand months” [97:3]

On this night Allah Glorified and Exalted be He forgives those who seek forgiveness and stand the night in prayer. This night is the most important and blessed night of the year. According to the Ahadith, this night is one of the odd nights of the last ten (10) days of Ramadan and believers are commanded to seek this night and ask for forgiveness and the expiation from the Hell fire in this night. This night was given to the Ummah of Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam as a special gift which allows them to gain mountains of reward in a short amount of time. Make special arrangements for yourself and your family to earn the rewards of this special night to its fullest. Spend all these nights or parts of it in prayer, recitation of Qur'an and Zikar. The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam taught his wife, Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) a short and concise Duaa which we should recite during this night: “O Allah, You are The Forgiver, You love to forgive, so forgive me”

Similarly, if you have the ability to perform Itikaf, do so during the last 10

Make a special effort to guard your tongue during this month.

Make a habit every night to assess your day before going to sleep.

We can be among those who are mentioned in the above

verse of Qur'an by simply waking up 15-20 minutes before Suhoor and performing two rakaat Nafil prayers.

can fall and die …” “When American Muslims buy dates from Israeli settlements, they are unsuspectingly supporting these terrible conditions as well as the settlement industry as a whole, which in turn supports the occupation,” Abuirshaid said. “We’re hoping to create critical mass and to make a dent in Israeli date imports into this country.” The global BDS movement is making an impact. While there are no hard and fast statistics yet about the overall economic impact, in 2013, Israeli settlement farmers lost an estimated $29 million

in revenue, a 14 percent decline, due mainly to European countries’ boycott of agricultural produce from settlements, according to the Christian Science Monitor. In 2010, the Reut Institute, an Israeli policy think tank that informs policy, declared BDS as an “existential threat” to Israel. Just three years later, the Israeli government called BDS a “strategic threat” to the occupation. The prime minister assigned the Ministry of Strategic Affairs the task of slowing down or stopping BDS after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs failed to do so, said a 2014 report, “Impact of the BDS Movement on Israel: The Economic Dimension,” by BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti and Birzeit University Professor Samia Botmeh. BDS opponents often say that the

economic activism is anti-Semitic, something easily disproved by reading the BDS call. “BDS does not target individuals but rather government policies that contravene international law and violate human rights,” said Kristin Szremski, AMP national director of media and communications. “BDS is a political action, not a religious one, and it is supported by several Jewish activists and organizations.” Each year, AMP has seen its boycott grow. Last year, a social media campaign reached 1.6 million people in one hour and the organization distributed 20,000 postcards bearing the boycottable brands across the country. This year, even non-Muslims are requesting date boycott

materials, which have been shipped to several states so far. In keeping with its mission to educate the public, AMP has made materials available for free. Postcards, brochures, talking points, a Power Point Presentation and video are all available for download for people wanting to put on a date boycott presentation or help spread the boycott. For the first time this year, posters are available for storeowners who have pledged to not carry Israeli dates. The posters declare: Proud to be Israeli Occupation Date Free. days of Ramadan. If you can’t, try doing it for a shorter period. The act of Itikaf gives you an opportunity to remove yourself from the engagements of daily life and dedicate yourself to the remembrance of Allah and acts of worship for a set period of time. This time gives you the ability to reflect deeply on Allah’s creation and His signs and blessings. It is one of the best ways of seeking nearness to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. If you are unable to spend ten of few days in the Masjid at least make the intention of Itikat every time you attend prayers at the Masjid. Spend for the Pleasure of Allah (Charity)

Charity is considered the second most important act of worship after prayers. Spending with the pure intention of pleasing Allah Glorified and Exalted be He from one’s wealth is one of the most noble acts liked by Allah Glorified and Exalted be He. Allah promises the

recompense of seven hundred times of what a believer spends for His sake. Infaq has been described as a key characteristic of Muttaqeen (those who have Taqwa and consciousness of Allah at all times). In this month, open your heart and your wallet. Give for the sake of Allah without any fear of poverty. Give to your relatives, the orphans and poor to the best of your ability. Give without any desire of recompense or worldly reward as described by Allah in Surat Al-Dahr: “We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.” [76:9] Helping & Supporting People

The Prophetpeace be up on him, Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam called the month of Ramadan as the month of consolation. During this month make a special effort to help someone. Is there a family in your neighborhood that you haven’t seen in a while? A student in a strange new city? A new Muslim who is fasting for the first time? An elderly couple who can’t get to the Masjid? Why not take a few minutes to make a phone call, drop in for a visit, or invite someone for Iftar. Even the smallest

gesture of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Remember your actions are measured on their quality and not their quantity. Breaking someone’s fast even with modest food can make you worthy of great reward and can be an expiation from the fire of Hell. The Prophetpeace be up on him, Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said, “If someone helps break the fast of a fasting person in the month of Ramadan, he will receive the same amount of reward as the person fasting without any reduction in the reward of the fasting person”. He also said, “If someone feeds a fasting person, Allah will quench his thirst from the water of Kawther and he will never be thirsty again until he enters Jannah”. Invite Towards The Qur'an

The struggles of this world will end, but the struggles of those who enter Hell will never end. Therefore, the biggest service to anyone is to save them from the fire of Hell and help them enter Paradise (Jannah). The month of Ramadan was honored by Allah Glorified and Exalted be He due to the revelation of Qur'an during this month. So, inviting people

to the message of Qur'an is among the noblest acts we can perform during this month. In this month, we are all focused on reaping rewards and cleansing ourselves, but we should not ignore the highest responsibility of calling people to the Deen of Allah and to the message of Qur'an. Inviting others to Qur'an during this month can help our own Tarbiyah and Tazkiyah. In this month, people’s hearts are softer and they are prone to listening with more attention and care. Your invitation might change someone’s life and puts them back on the straight path (Al-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem).

The above 10 actions though are separate, but are linked as a part of the same goal which is the attainment of Taqwah during this month. This Taqwah would enable us to fulfill the responsibility of delivering the message of Qur'an to the masses. Our individual and collective success in this world and in the Hereafter is tied directly with our treatment for the message of Qur'an. We pray to Allah Glorified and Exalted be He to make us of those who are able to benefit from this Ramadan and reap the benefits and rewards of this blessed month (Ameen).

“Everyone is going to taste death, and We shall make a trial of you with evil and good, and to Us you will be returned.” (Surah Al-Anbiya:35)”

SHAATRI >> continued from pg 40

....

from us, and we have, by this, fulfilled from Your rights only a tiny portion from a lot.

O Allah, have mercy on us, one and all – and grace the evildoers among us for the sake of those who do good.

O Allah, forbid the Fire from [touching] our skin, for it cannot bear [its torment], O Lord of the Worlds (Rabb al-`Alameen)

O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell-Fire (Jahannam); ‘Its punishment is indeed an affliction grievous; evil indeed is it as an abode and a place to dwell.’ (From the Quran 25:65-66)

O You Whose Forgiveness is Vast and Encompassing… O Our Lord…

Is there, in existence, a lord (rabb) other than You to call upon?

Or in the universe, a god (ilah) other than You in whom one can put their hopes?

Or a judge other than You to whom a complaint can be raised?

Who else can we cry out to in distress, when You are the Most Knowing (al-Aleem), the Powerful (al-Qaadir)? To whom else can we turn, when You are the Most Generous (al-Kareem) and the One Who Conceals (as-Saatir)? Who else can we seek victory from, when You are Our Protector (al-Mawla) and the One Who Grants Victory (an-Naasir)? Who else can we ask for rescue, when You are Our Protector (al-Mawla), The Irresistible (al-Qaahir)? Who else can mend our affairs, when You alone are the One who mends hearts? Who else can forgive our sins when You are the Merciful, the Forgiving (ar-Raheem, al-Ghafir)?

O You who knows every secret and every innermost thought…

O You Who is The First (al-Awwal) and the Last (al-Aakhir), The Apparent (adh-Dhahir) and the Hidden (al-Batin)…

O Refuge of the Seekers… Beloved of the Lovers… Comfort of those who are cut off… O Companion of those who remember you…O You Who is with the hearts of the broken-hearted…O You Who fulfills the needs of those who petition You…O You Who accepts the repentence of the penitent… O You Who relieves the distressed of their

hardship…

We ask You, O Allah, to accept our supplication, and raise our ranks [in Your Sight and in Paradise], to forgive our sins, to respond to our yearnings, to conceal our faults and overlook our misdeeds.

O Allah, O Lord of Majesty and Honor (Dhul Jalali wal-Ikram)… O Unique One (al-Waahid al-Ahad), O You Who is Singular and Free of Want (al Fard as-Samad), O Supreme and Irresistible Subduer (al-Qahhar), O Oft-Relenting One (at-Tawwab)…

We ask You, O Allah, by every name that belongs to You, by which You have named Yourself, or that You have revealed in Your book, or You have taught to any of Your creation, or that You have preserved with You in Your knowledge of the unseen, that you make the majestic and noble Quran the blossoming spring of our hearts and the light of our chests, and the means of removing our sorrows, and dispelling our sadness and grief, and our driver and guide to You and Your Gardens – Gardens of Eternal Bliss.

O Allah, make us among those who care for its ordinances (hudood) and the pronunciation of its words (huroof); do not make us among those who care for the pronounce of its words, but ignore its ordinances.

O Allah, Ramadan has announced its departure; so please make it also a departure of our sins and our deficiencies and shortcomings, O Lord of Majesty and Honor (Dhul Jalali wal-Ikram).

O Allah, bring solace to our hearts upon separating from this month. O Allah, return this month to us again over many years and numerous times, while we are in good health and well being and expansive provision, O Lord of Majesty and Honor (Dhul Jalali wal-Ikram).

O Allah, forgive all the Muslim men and women who have passed away, and all the believing men and believing women; those who bore witness to Your Oneness and to Your messenger with his message; and who died upon that.

Oh Allah, forgive them and grant them Your mercy; pardon them and be generous with them; bless their arrival, and make wide their entrance; comfort their loneliness; and exchange their [earthly] home for a better home, and their [earthly] spouse (ahl) for a better spouse. O Allah, cleanse them of their sins and mistakes just as a white cloth is washed of dirt, and wash them with water and snow and hail.

O Allah, send down upon their graves light, spaciousness and happiness, until they become in the depths of their graves tranquil and content, and on the Day of Judgment among those who are safe [from Your punishment] ....

O Allah, to You is due all praise (hamd); and to You is all dominion (mulk); and in Your Hands is all good. To You returns all affairs, the open of them and the secret. Most worthy are You of being praised; most worthy are You of being worshiped; and most worthy are You of being obeyed.

O Allah, praise is due to You for You have created us, have provided for us, and have taught us. You have guided us, and relieved us and dispelled us of our worries.

Praise is due to You for [the blessing of] faith (iman); praise is due to You for Islam; praise is due to You for the Quran; praise is due to You for [the blessings of] family and wealth and good health.

You have seized our enemies, and made manifest our safety; and from all that we have asked You, Our Lord, You have [responded to us] and given to us.

Praise is due to You for this, praise that is generous and abundant.

Praise is due to You for every blessing You have bestowed upon us, whether old or new, specific or general, living or dead, apparent or hidden.

Praise is due to You until You are pleased, and praise is due to You after You are pleased. Praise is due to You in the beginning and the end. La ilaha illa Allah… we worship none but [You], sincere in faith and devotion, though the disbelievers dislike it.

O Allah, we seek Your help and we seek Your forgiveness. We attribute all goodness to You. We are grateful to You and refuse to be ungrateful to You; we abandon and forsake all those who reject You. O Allah, You alone we worship, to You alone we pray; to You alone we prostrate, and for You alone we strive; and to You alone we flee for refuge. We hope in Your mercy and we fear Your retribution. Verily, Your punishment is bound to catch up with those who reject the truth.

Glory be to [Allah,] the One Who is donned with glory and proclaims with it.

Glory be to He Who dressed Himself in honor (majd) and bestows it graciously.

Glory be to He besides Whom there is no other

worthy of glorifying.

Glory be to the Possessor of Grace (fadl) and Munificence (jood).

Glory be to the Possessor of Generosity (karam) and Munificence (jood).

Glory be to He Whose knowledge encompasses all things.

O Allah, guide us along with those whom You have guided aright; and grant us well-being along with those whom You have granted well-being; and protect us with those whom You have protected. Bless for us all that You have given us; and save us and keep away from us, by Your mercy, any evil that You have decreed. Verily You decree and none can decree over You. And none is abased whom You befriend, and none is honored whom You oppose. Blessed are You, our Lord, Exalted. To You, O Allah, all praise is due for what You have decreed, and to You, O Allah, is due all thanks for Your blessings and bounty. We seek forgiveness from (You) Allah for all of our sins and mistakes, and we repent to You.

O Allah, apportion to us such fear (khashya) of You as should serve as a barrier between us and acts of disobedience; and such obedience as will take us to Your Paradise; and apportion for us a share of certainty (yaqeen) that will make it easy for us to bear the hardships and tribulations of this world. Allow us, O Allah, to enjoy our hearing, our sight and our strength as long as You keep us alive, until we pass away; grant us retribution, but only from those who have wronged us, and do not put over us, due to our sins, an authority that does not fear You in regards to us nor shows us compassion.

O Allah, do not let worldly affairs (dunya) be our principal concern nor the ultimate limit of our knowledge; do not make the Fire our abode, and make, O Allah, Paradise our home and final dwelling place, by Your Mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

O Allah, we ask You for guidance (huda) and piety (tuqaa), virtue (`afafah) and richness (ghinaa).

O Allah, we ask You [to grant us] the performance of good deeds, and restraint from the forbidden, and love for the poor. [We ask] that You forgive us and have mercy on us, and that if you will for a people to be tried by tribulation (fitna), that You grasp us to You, and prevent us from being from among them.

O Allah, we ask you for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of those deeds that draw us close to Your love, O Lord

of Majesty and Honor (Dhul Jalali wal-Ikram).

O Allah, grant our souls (nufus) piety (taqwa), and purify them, for You are the best to purify them, and You alone are their Guardian and Master, O Lord of Majesty and Honor (Dhul Jalali wal-Ikram).

O Allah, accept our repentance, wash away our sins, respond to our supplications, make firm our proof, guide our hearts, straighten our tongues, and remove rancor and ill-feeling from our hearts.

O Allah, enrich us with forbearance (hilm); ornament us with knowledge (`ilm); honor us with piety (taqwa); and beautify us with well-being (`aafiya), O Lord of Majesty and Honor (Dhul Jalali wal-Ikram).

O Allah bless us in our hearing, our sight, and our hearts; [bless for us] our spouses and our children, and accept our repentance, for You are the Oft-Relenting, Most Compassionate (at-Tawwab ar-Raheem).

Make us thankful for Your blessings, declaring our praises and gratitude for them (thana), and expressing that in our speech; and complete and perfect [such blessings] upon us, for You are the Benevolent, the Generous (al-Jawaad al-Kareem).

La ilaha illaAllah… [Praise] proportionate to the amount of creatures who walk on earth and on its steps. All praise is due to Him in Whose Hands are the keys of relief and refuge (faraj).

Our Refuge when all doors are closed… and all means (of escape) are cut… and a barrier lies between us and our families and companions…

O You besides Whom there is no other lord (rabb) to call upon, nor angel to whom one’s request is deferred, nor intercessor that is beseech-ed. O You Who only increases in generosity and munificence with every request … Who only increases in graciousness and benevolence when presented with large amounts of [people’s] needs

Allow us to taste the coolness of Your Pardon.

And the sweetness of intimate discourse with You.

O Allah, we have been tending to the responsibility of fasting and standing in prayer during this month, with so many shortcomings

The Islamic learning multipurpose center has lost its location. We are now operating mobile

What Will Your Iftar Table Look Like This Year? For many around the world, it won’t be better than this.

Your gift of just $120 provides a month of iftar meals for a needy person in eight different countries this Ramadan.

“Whoever feeds a fasting person will have their reward without decreasing from the fasting person’s reward.”

During the blessed month of Ramadan, Allah (SWT) provides the believers with increased opportunities to gain rewards and come closer to Him. Answering the call of someone who is suffering and in need is one of the most beloved of these opportunities.

You can sponsor one or more needy fasting persons for the entire blessed month in any of these eight countries where we work:

Mercy-USA will ensure that your iftar gift feeds a truly needy person, and your Zakat or other donation will be used to relieve suffering, restore dignity and support the needy in their efforts to become more self-sufficient.
