PERSPECTIVES

Raise the momentum of anti-drugcampaign and take part in regionaldevelopment tasks

Use of various kinds of narcotic drugs isbecoming more widespread all over the worldand it brings grave consequences not only todrug users themselves but also to their familiesand the social environment related with drugproducers and traffickers.

The danger of narcotic drugs being theconcern of all countries and regions in theworld, they are carrying out anti-drugcampaigns seriously. To eliminate drugproduction and trafficking, they are tryingthrough various ways and means, includingexchange of information betweenthemselves.

Myanmar regards her fight againstnarcotic drugs as a national duty and is tryingto the best of her ability to eliminate theirmenace by implementing the 15-year plan forelimination of narcotic drugs. The plan periodis from 1999 to 2014. It is now in the last yearof its second five-year phase and muchheadway has been made.

The Central Committee for Drug AbuseControl occasionally holds ceremonies todestroy narcotic drugs seized in various partsof the nation. Narcotic drugs were destroyedtwenty times up to 2006 in Yangon and 47times in other states and divisions.

A ceremony to destroy narcotic drugsseized in Shan State (East) was held at thestate sports ground in Kengtung on 8December. Various kinds of narcotic drugs, stimulant tablets, chemicals and accessoriesdestroyed were worth more than 93 billionkyats (over 93 million US dollars).

We would like to call on the entire nationalpeople to take an active part in the measuresfor regional peace and stability, the rule oflaw and regional development while thegovernment is accelerating the momentum ofits fight against narcotic drugs.

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

GRANTS PASS, 10 Dec—Federal biologists are de-signing an experiment tosee if killing the aggres-sive barred owl that hasinvaded old growth for-ests of the Northwestwould help the spottedowl, which is protected.

The US Fish and Wild-life Service announced onWednesday it is doing aformal study to decidewhether to do the experi-ment, and laying out theterms if they go ahead. The study will be avail-able for public commentand is expected to be com-pleted by fall 2010.” This

is to be done experimen-tally so we can nail downwhether, in fact, removingbarred owls could im-prove spotted owldemographics, and also tolook into the feasibility ofdoing that,” said Fish andWildlife biologist RobinBown, who is overseeingthe evaluation.

The spotted owl wentfrom a seldom-seen deni-zen of old growth foreststo the cover of Timemagazine in the 1990s asenvironmentalists forcedthe federal government tocut back logging onNorthwest national for-

ests to protect its habitat.Despite the cutbacks, spotted owls continue todecline, most steeplywhere there are highpopulations of more ag-gressive barred owls thatare native to eastern NorthAmerica.

Though killing one spe-cies to protect another isnot uncommon — on theWest Coast, for instance, ravens are poisoned to pro-tect threatened snowyplovers — a small-scaleexperiment with killingbarred owls in northernCalifornia in 2005 createdan uproar. —Internet

Scientists create instantnanobatteries

STANFORD, 10 Dec —US scientists say they havecombined ordinary paperdipped into ink infusedwith carbon nanotubes andsilver nanowires to createan instant battery.

Stanford Universitypost doctoral students ledby Assistant Professor YiCui said the paper batter-ies are ultra-lightweightand bendable.

“Society really needs alow-cost, high-perform-ance energy storage de-vice, such as batteries and

simple supercapacitors,”Cui said.

Capacitors are similarto batteries, holding anelectric charge, but for ashorter period of time. However, capacitors canstore and discharge elec-tricity much more rapidlythan a battery.

“These nanomaterialsare special,” Cui said.“They’re a one-dimen-sional structure with verysmall diameters.” He saidthe small diameter helpsthe nanomaterial ink stick

strongly to the fibrous pa-per, making the battery andsupercapacitor very dura-ble

Cui said the papersupercapacitor may lastthrough 40,000 charge-discharge cycles — at leastan order of magnitudemore than lithium batter-ies. The nanomaterials alsomake ideal conductors be-cause they move electric-ity along much more effi-ciently than ordinary con-ductors, Cui said.

GENEVA , 10 Dec – Theworld’s largest atomsmasher has recorded itsfirst high-energy collisionsof protons, a spokeswomansaid Wednesday.

The collisions occurredTuesday evening as theLarge Hadron Colliderunderwent test runs inpreparation for operationsnext year, said ChristineSutton of the EuropeanOrganization for NuclearResearch, or CERN.

Two beams of circula-ting particles travelling inopposite directions at 1.18trillion electron voltsproduced the collisions, shesaid.

Germ-free kids may risk more adult illnessesWASHINGTON , 10 Dec – Parents who let their kids romp in the mud and eat food

that has fallen on the floor could be helping to protect them against maladies likeheart disease later in life, a US study showed on Wednesday.” Our researchsuggests that ultra-clean, ultra-hygienic environments early in life may contributeto higher levels of inflammation as an adult, which in turn increases risks for a widerange of diseases,” including cardiovascular disease, Thomas McDade, leadauthor of the study, said.

Researchers at Northwestern University in the state of Illinois looked at datafrom a study in the Philippines, which followed participants from birth to 22 yearsof age.

The data were compiled by tracking children born in the 1980s to 3,327 Filipinomothers.Researchers visited the children every two months for the first two yearsof their lives and then spaced out the visits to every four or five years until the kidsreached their 20s. Among items that the researchers assessed were the hygiene ofthe children’s household environment — “whether domestic animals such as pigsand dogs roamed freely” — and their families’ socioeconomic resources.

WASHINGTON, 10 Dec —A multi-institutional studyhas identified a potentialpersonalized treatmenttarget for the most commonform of ovarian cancer. Inthe 8 Dec.issue of CancerCell, the research teamdescribes finding that agene called MAGP2 — notpreviously associated withany type of cancer — wasoverexpressed in papillaryserous ovarian tumors of

patients who died morequickly. They also foundevidence suggestingpossible mechanisms bywhich MAGP2 maypromote tumor growth.

“Ovarian cancer istypically diagnosed at anadvanced stage when it isincurable, and the sametreatments have been usedfor virtually all patients,”says Michael Birrer, director of medical

gynecologic oncology inthe Massachusetts GeneralHospital (MGH) CancerCenter, the study’scorresponding author.“Previous research frommy lab indicated thatdifferent types and gradesof ovarian tumors shouldbe treated differently, andthis paper now shows thateven papillary seroustumors have differencesthat impact patientprognosis.”

The fifth most commonmalignancy among U.S.women, ovarian cancer isexpected to cause close to15,000 deaths during 2009.Accounting for 60 percentof ovarian cancers, papillaryserous tumors are typicallydiagnosed after spreadingbeyond the ovaries. Thetumors typically return afterinitial treatment withsurgery and chemotherapy, but while some patients diea few months afterdiagnosis, others maysurvive five years or longerwhile receiving treatment.
