PERSPECTIVES

Upgrade rural gravel roadsto all-weather ones

The government has been improvinginfrastructures for development of rural areas, home to the majority of the people. As part of thedrive, it is seeking sources for adequate supply ofirrigation water because agricultural farming isthe main business of rural regions. Thanks to thedams, sluice gates, and clusters of dams and lakes, farmers are enjoying economic development, growing monsoon and summer paddy along withmany other crops through double-cropping andmultiple-cropping patterns.

In addition, the government has beenconstructing a large number of bridges over riversand creeks for ensuring smooth transport for theconvenience of the regions concerned. Now, ruralpeople are benefiting from inter-village roads, and roads linking urban and rural areas, andenjoying swift flow of local goods to other regions.

Aung Mingalar-Thayetsein gravel road inKyaukdaga Township was put into commission on21 December, as a result of the efforts jointly madeby Kyaukdaga Township and Pyu TownshipDevelopment Affairs Committees in Bago Division. So, local people in 51 villages of nine village-tractsin Tawkywe-in and Kanyutkwin regions in thetownships have easy access to smooth transport.

In the meantime, local people and well-wishersare making generous donations to help achieveongoing projects for rural development. Now,many villages have got affiliated basic educationhigh schools, new school buildings, and self-reliantvillage libraries, thus providing better learningopportunities for the youth and broadening thehorizons of the people in rural areas.

Due to new station hospitals, health centresand rural dispensaries, better heath care isprovided to respective villages and surroundingvillages. In some regions there are a large numberof model villages that reflect regional developmentin the economic, education, health and transportsectors.

The socio-economic life of rural people is nowimproving increasingly owing to the projects thegovernment, local administrative bodies, socialorganizations and well-wishers have beenimplementing with goodwill and in collaborationfor rural development.

Climate change putsecosystems on run

WASHINGTON, 24 Dec—Global warming is causingclimate belts to shift toward the poles and to higherelevations, to keep pace with which, the average eco-system will need to shift about a quarter mile eachyear, said a new study led by scientists at the CarnegieInstitution. For some habitats, such as low-lying ar-eas, climate belts are moving even faster, putting manyspecies in jeopardy, especially where human develop-ment has blocked migration paths, said the report inthe 24 Dec issue of journal Nature.

“Expressed as velocities, climate-change projectionsconnect directly to survival prospects for plants andanimals. These are the conditions that will set the stage, whether species move or cope in place,” said studyco-author Chris Field, director of the Carnegie Insti-tution’s Department of Global Ecology.

The research team, which included researchers fromthe Carnegie Institution, Stanford University, the Cali-fornia Academy of Sciences, and the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, combined data on current climateand temperature gradients worldwide with climatemodel projections for the next century to calculate the“temperature velocity” for different regions of theworld.—Xinhua

Giant Pyramid UFO ‘Hovers OverMoscow’

A mysterious ‘UFO’ seen in the skyover Moscow has sparked speculationthat the city has been visited by an alienspacecraft.

The fuzzy grey shape was apparentlycaptured on film in at least two separatevideos - one filmed during the daytimeand another at night - which became anonline sensation.

But sceptics suggested there wouldbe thousands of videos, rather than justtwo, if the object really had remained inthe skies for hours.

Russian police have not commentedon the alleged sightings.

The reports of the pyramid comejust days after a Russian missile launchset off a spate of UFO sightings inNorway.

The dramatic light spiral seen overthe north of the country promptedtheories that it was caused by a meteor,

the Northern Lights or even aliens. However, HYPERLINK “http://

Scientists create world’sfirst molecular transistorWASHINGTON, 24 Dec — A group of scientists have

succeeded in creating the first transistor made from asingle molecule. The team, which includes research-ers from Yale University and the Gwangju Institute ofScience and Technology in South Korea, will publishtheir findings in the 24 Dec issue of the journal Na-ture.

The team, including Mark Reed, professor of engi-neering and applied science at Yale, showed that abenzene molecule attached to gold contacts could be-have just like a silicon transistor. The researchers wereable to manipulate the molecule’s different energystates depending on the voltage they applied to itthrough the contacts. By manipulating the energystates, they were able to control the current passingthrough the molecule.“It’s like rolling a ball up andover a hill, where the ball represents electrical currentand the height of the hill represents the molecule’sdifferent energy states,” Reed said. — Xinhua

Study shows key protein helpscontrol blood pressure

WASHINGTON, 24 Dec — University of Iowa re-searchers have shown that a protein channel helpsnerve sensors in blood vessels keep blood pressure incheck. Without the protein channel, known as ASIC2,the sensors are unable to send the brain the signals itneeds to properly control blood pressure. The finding, which was based on animal models, is important be-cause it could be used to create new treatments to pre-vent high blood pressure (hypertension).

The study results will appear in the Dec. 24 is-sue of the journal Neuron. “Sensors in your body’sblood vessels sense when your blood pressure goesup, for instance, when you get mad at someone,” saidthe study’s principal investigator Frank Abboud, di-rector of the Cardiovascular Research Center at theUniversity of Iowa.— Xinhua

Anti-inflammatory drugs interferewith aspirin’s clotting ability

WASHINGTON, 24 Dec —A new study conducted atBen-Gurion University(BGU) in Israel reveals thatCelebrex and other anti-in-flammatory coxib medica-tions may counter the posi-tive effects of aspirin in pre-venting blood clots.

The research, publishedthis week in the U.S. jour-nal of Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sci-ences (PNAS), indicatesthat people who are takingaspirin and coxibs togetherare in fact inhibiting the as-pirin’s effectiveness in pre-venting heart attacks andstrokes.

“This finding stronglysuggests that humans whoare consuming coxibs anda low dose of aspirin si-multaneously are exposedto a greater risk of cardio-vascular events,” said Pro-fessor Gilad RimonofBGU. In the past decade,

a new group of anti-inflam-matory drugs, coxibs, which include Celebrexand Arcoxia was developedto treat arthritis as well asother pain.
