Wednesday, March 1, 2017 Sheridan, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield Vol. 4, No. 39 Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 1 p.m., then a slight chance of showers before 2 p.m. Tonight: A chance of rain showers, possibly mixing with snow after 11 p.m. TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: Falling to 48 LOW: 30 Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear and Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness were joined by Hamilton County Commissioners Tuesday to announce a joint partnership to develop the Nickel Plate Trail, a 14-foot wide paved pedestrian and bicycle trail connecting the two cities from 96th Street in Fishers to Pleasant Street in Noblesville, totaling 9.2 miles. The Nickel Plate Trail would be developed over the existing Nickel Plate Rail line. “The Nickel Plate Trail is another step in fulfilling our vision to create more opportunities for residents to really get out and experience our community,” said Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. “With the challenges we are facing to save the rail line, this option helps provide similar connectivity, activates the space year-round, and has the potential for a positive economic impact to Fishers.” The partnership complements both cities’ long-range trails plans and connects the two communities. “Whether residents walk, run, bike or skate, the Nickel Plate Trail will highlight what is unique about each of our cities – from the new downtown of Fishers and the young entrepreneurs of Launch Fishers north to Noblesville’s historic downtown and the small-town charm that we hold so dear,” said Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear. “The Nickel Plate Trail will connect together the hearts of our downtown and provide an opportunity for our residents to experience each community like never before. For Noblesville residents, it will bring even greater walkability and add to our 84 miles of trails without replacing existing trail projects set to begin construction this year.” The trail will be developed under a federal program as part of its National Trails System Act. The Act established the federal rail banking program which allows the owners of the rail corridor to convert the railroad to a pedestrian trail, while preserving the right to re-establish rail service. The rail banking process is overseen by the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB), which could take six to 12 months, depending on response time of the STB. “Transforming the rail to the Nickel Plate Trail gives these communities an opportunity to use these connection points today, rather than years down the line,” said Christine Altman, Hamilton County Commissioner. “It also allows us to preserve the land for any potential long term transit plans. This is something we’re very supportive of.” A preliminary cost estimate to convert 9.2 miles from rail to trail from 96th Street to Pleasant Street is approximately $9.3 M, assuming standard crossings at intersections. This is subject to change, and value engineering and grant opportunities for cost savings will be explored as part of the initial design phase. Two community listening sessions are scheduled to answer questions and provide the public with the Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt, Noblesville Mayor John Distlear, Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. The new Nickel Plate Trail Photo provided Joe Scheumann, a 12-year veteran of the Noblesville Fire Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Scheumann also serves as the Fitness Coordinator for the Noblesville Fire Department. "I am very proud of Lieutenant Scheumann and am very happy to see him reach this milestone in his career. He will be an excellent Officer for the Noblesville Fire Department," said Noblesville Fire Chief Greg Wyant. "It's an honor to be promoted within the Noblesville Fire Department to the rank of Lieutenant. All the men that tested for this position are great Firefighters, and will make great fire officers at NFD in the near future. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity and look forward to the challenges ahead," Scheumann stated, when asked how he felt about his recent promotion. Westfield City Council hosting Council Connections events Tree clearing begins for Noblesville trail projects Site work for Midland Trace Trail and Little Chicago Road Trail began Monday as trees along the planned trails will be cleared. Trees will only be removed from city-owned or public right-of-way land. “Tree clearing is the first step in the construction process so the land can be prepped for site work. We’re excited to make these trail projects a reality and have them open for use later this year,” Mayor John Ditslear said. Tree clearing began with the Little Chicago Road Trail. The trail project runs from Indiana 38 to the South Harbour Elder- berry Entrance. Construction of this trail will begin this summer. Following the work on Little Chicago Road, tree clearing will begin for Midland Trace Trail from Gray Road to Hazel Dell Road. Last year, the city hired an indepen- dent arborist to review the clearing plans and the site to inventory trees that are outside the footprint required to build the trail. The city will save all healthy non-invasive species Again this year, the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District and Parks and Recreation Department are partnering for Mission Monarch—a series of educational programs and events highlighting the decline of the Monarch butterfly and importance of pollinators. Pollinators like butterflies, bees, and birds require pollen and nectar sources to thrive but the native plants they depend on have been in decline. Native plants are those that have grown and thrived in this area since before settlers made this area home. This spring take the guesswork out of your landscaping and go native by purchasing one of the Soil and Water Conservation District’s native plant kits. Each native plant kit contains 50 native plants for $120 and takes the guesswork out of plant selection by providing a set of plants that will be perfect for your yard. There is a kit for any area of your landscape including pollinator garden, rain garden (for wetter Native plant kits available from SWCD

By RICHIE HALLReporter Sports EditorThe sectional re-match between the

Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern boysbasketball was hard-fought and intense justlike everybody expected

In the end the Royals were able to getpast the Tigers 72-66 in a first-round gameat Class 4A Sectional 8 at Carmels EricClark Activity Center With the victorySoutheastern advanced to Fridays semi-finals to take on Anderson while Fisherswith a 10-14 record

That record didnt fool Royals coachBrian Satterfield He remembers the regular-season game between HSE and the Tigersin which the Royals needed overtime to win

Theyre better than their record showssaid Satterfield

The first quarter ended with Southeast-ern up 16-12 with the Royals senior starZach Gunn scoring nine of those points Onthe Fishers side sophomore Armaan Frank-lin made his entrance into star territoryscoring all 12 of the Tigers points

Franklin would eventually finish with 33points leading all scorers

I thought he was absolutely spectacu-lar said Fishers coach Joe Leonard Hegot an offer from IUPUI so people were onto him Hes going to be a big-time playerhere

The Royals led 39-31 at halftime andran their lead up to 12 at one point in thethird quarter Noah Smith had a solid secondperiod for HSE scoring 11 points

But the Tigers made a run and tied thegame back up at 50-50 by the end of theperiod Franklin scored another seven pointsin that quarter while Connor Washburnadded six and Jamil Turner-Hall four

Fishers took the lead twice early in thefourth period but Southeastern quickly tiedthe game back up both times and graduallytook control of the quarter A 3-pointer fromNick Bowman helped the Royals out duringthe period

We had some good ball reversals andgot a wide open look in the corner andBowman hits a big 3 for us to tie it saidSatterfield whose team is now 20-5 for theseason And then we got a few stops duringthat stretch where they came back and tiedit

We came up with some of the loose

balls the rebounds and things like that Butat the offensive end we were very efficientWe sort of got shots that we wanted to fromthat point on

Very proud of how they foughttonight said Leonard We had playedthem earlier in the season and had got down12 and came back Its a group that I wouldnever give up on because of their ability tocome back

Gunn led HSE with 23 points including10 in the third quarter He also grabbed ninerebounds Smith added 20 points and dishedout four assists Jack Davidson scored 12 forHSE

After Franklins 33 Washburn scorednine points and grabbed nine rebounds aswell Jamil Turner-Hall added eight pointsand handed out eight assists
