School-based Traineeship Success

It is vital that we continue to develop a young skilled workforce to meet the future demand for Aged services. ACSA are helping organisations with their workforce planning with programs such as the Aged Services School-based Traineeship Program.

We are working with aged service organisations to encourage young people into the sector through a supported pathway. The program is a paid employment program for full time school students who are attending Year 10-12. It is designed to support and mentor young people who are transitioning to work to become, confident, safe and competent members of the aged services workforce.

Nick Eickhoff has been able to continue his studies while attending training and works in the aged services – all at the same time. He says “The traineeship through OneCare has been a truly amazing experience and has taught me so much. I would like to thank ACSA and Work & Training Tasmania for supporting me through the program at all times.”

Nick’s journey began when he participated in an ACSA Career Discovery Day, which inspired him to start his career in the sector. He then successfully applied for an Aged Services School-based Traineeship Program at OneCare and is now continuing his studies with the Introduction to Nursing program at Hobart College.

Clinical Care Manager at OneCare’s Bishop Davies Court says “Nick has become an asset to Bishop Davies Court and as part of Nick's traineeship he supports the residents in their daily living activities under the supervision of the care team. Nick is building wonderful relationships with our residents and their families and is supporting them to participate in the facility’s leisure and lifestyle programs.”

Aged Services Young Leader of the Year

ACSA’s Workforce and Industry Development recognise the role of young leaders in the future of the Aged Services sector. The Aged services Young Leaders Award acknowledges the valuable work of our Young Leaders Network and their input to the sector.

Congratulations to The Aged Services Young Leader for 2019 –

Melissa (Mel) Williams, from Care Forward in Riverside Tasmania.

Mel has embraced the opportunity to have an active role in inspiring young people to work in our Sector. She has been active in promoting aged services as a career opportunity to other young people and is involved in various broader workforce initiatives. Mel has continually demonstrated a strong commitment to this initiative with her valuable contributions.

Mel’s Team Leader fully supported Mel’s application for the award and says “Mel embodies all that the group aspires to in terms of sharing knowledge, skills and ideas and promoting the sector as a career pathway to young people. Mel also demonstrates valuable leadership skills and communicates ideas and suggestions for new initiatives as well as continuous improvement for our organisation.”

As the winner of the award, Mel will now be able to choose from either attending the ACSA Summit in Melbourne or Enrolment in the 2020 Aged services Emerging Leaders Program and work towards a Diploma of Leadership and Management.

Celebrate Age Diversity with Generational Awareness Week (September 16 – 20)

We are encouraging all aged service organisations to celebrate in their workplace by hosting an event or activity during Generational Awareness Week September 16 – 20.

It could be as simple as hosting a morning tea and discussing your favourite childhood memories with staff, volunteers and residents or creating a display of photos from different generations. You could also ask staff and residents to bring along an item (music, food, clothing) that represents their generation!

Each generation is shaped by the events and culture in which they lived – so it’s important to join together to acknowledge the generational differences and celebrate who we are and what makes us different.

- 5 Generations are now working together in the Aged Services Sector - 50% of Aged Services staff will retire in the next few years - By next year, 45% of people working in the sector will be millennials

If you would like to host an event to celebrate and recognise age diversity in your workplace, go to ACSA’s Workforce Hub to find out how your organisations can get involved. You can also register your event and download materials to help promote the activities in your workplace.

For further information on Generational Awareness Week, please contact Lee Veitch - Workforce & Industry Development Manager – by telephone on (03) 6105 0246 or 0409 415 923 or via email at [email protected]

Palliative Care Tasmania (PCT) being funded to facilitate and implement the Strengthening Communities of Care Strategy (SCCS) and Action Plan.

Developed by the Tasmanian Government the SCCS identifies the key priorities and actions required to ensure that Tasmania has a ‘skilled, responsive, confident, competent and sustainable palliative care workforce into the future’.

In order to achieve this, PCT is developing the SCCS Workforce Development Implementation Plan. This Plan will identify what needs to be done, by whom and by when in order to address the communities of care workforce capacity (supply) and capability (quality) into the future.

Palliative care is defined as care and support that focuses on providing the best quality of life for anyone of any age, living with a life-limiting condition and those they value. It identifies and treats a person’s physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs. Palliative care can be provided at home, hospital, an aged care facility or anywhere you live. Even though you may not consider yourself to be part of the ‘palliative care workforce’, we would still like to hear from you, as we are very interested in the views of anyone who may have contact with people who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition as part of their work (whether this be paid, unpaid or voluntary).

PCT has appointed Ms Prue Cripps as Project Manager for this project and engaged consultants (Stenning & Associates in conjunction with The Work Lab and John Ramsay & Associates) to assist in developing the Plan. The development of the Plan is expected to be completed in early 2020, with implementation commencing thereafter.

To that end, we have created a survey to assist in identifying and quantifying key workforce development issues for the palliative care workforce in Tasmania. Your responses will enable us to develop a good profile of the numbers and characteristics of people working in palliative care in Tasmania. We invite you to complete this survey to give key insight on these issues. Your responses will be invaluable in building a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing the palliative care workforce.

Please note that we have developed two surveys: one for service providers, and one for individuals, with the aim of gathering a range of views on current issues in palliative care in Tasmania. If you are able to speak on behalf of your organisation, please complete the service provider survey, otherwise, please complete the individual survey.

The web link to the service provider survey is https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SCCS_Service_Providers

The web link to the individual survey is:https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SCCS_Individuals

We thank you in advance for your response.

Colleen Johnstone, CEO

Respect and Protect Older Tasmanians Please see here the fully accessible version of Tasmania’s new elder abuse prevention strategy 2019-2022, which can be added to websites, social media and any other online options.

Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) and Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) have also released a new pocket-sized elder abuse awareness resource for aged care workers and providers. This user-friendly resource provides critical information about how to recognise elder abuse and has been designed so that aged care workers can have it on hand or in their pockets for every shift. To get free copies for your workers, please contact ACSA at [email protected].
