Glorifying God as we make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

August 2018

John Carney, Becky Baker, Ed and Joan Leichner attended a week of Mountain T.O.P.’s

Adults in Ministry program in late June and had a great time. But not everyone can give up a

whole week during the summer—and the good news is that Mountain

T.O.P. has weekend events in the fall. Volunteers would drive up to

camp on Thursday, have orientation Thursday night, work all day

Friday and Saturday, and come home Sunday morning. Its a great way

to stick your toe in the water of short-term missions.

Most of the fall weekends are home repair-only. But don’t let that scare you away!

Mountain T.O.P.’s home repair teams are intended for men

and women of any skill level (including none at all.)

Everyone finds ways to contribute, and usually learns new skills in the process.

There is one weekend with a non-home repair option, and it’s the weekend John

attended last fall. On the weekend of Oct. 25-28, volunteers have the choice of

either doing home repair or participation in Mountain T.O.P.’s Fall Festival.

Mountain T.O.P. holds a festival each year to give away new

shoes and gently-used winter clothing to the people of Grundy County, which is

consistently one of the poorest counties in the state. The festival includes games, live

entertainment, a meal, and booths set up to promote various not-for-profit agencies. If you

choose to volunteer for Fall Festival, you’ll spend Friday Helping to set things up (sorting

clothes, putting up signs, etc.) and then Saturday you’ll play some part in the festival itself-

manning a booth or carnival game, greeting visitors, helping kids try on shoes, and so on.

If you’re interested in attending any of the fall weekends, contact John Carney at 931-842-

4824 or [email protected]. For more information, go to mountain-top.org and look for “Fall Adults in

Ministry Weekends” under the “Missions and Volunteering” tab.

Listening Session for Our District

The listening session for our District with General Conference Delegates will be

Sunday October 14, at Manchester FUMC, 106 Church St, Manchester TN from 3-5 pm.

This meeting will allow persons to meet the delegates that will represent our Conference at the

Special Called General Conference that is to be held in St. Louis, MO, February 23-29, 2019. At

this called Conference, a determination will be made on the recommendation from the

Commission on a Way Forward regarding LGBTQ inclusion. Members of our congregation need

to be present for this October 14, meeting.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

UMW NEWS

July was a busy month for the

United Methodist Women,

and August will be too! Our July meeting’s

program was Faye Womble showing us her card

ministry. Faye’s work is impressive as well as

beautiful. Two days later seven of us attended

Mission University at St. Mark’s UMC. The

Stones River District was well represented, and I

believe our church had the most representatives.

August’s UMW meeting on August 14, promises

to be very informative. Chris Spencer our

summer member, attended the National

Convention of the UMW representing her

Arizona Conference, and she will relate her

experiences to us. Thank you, Circle VIII for

securing Chris. Circle VI will provide our lunch.

Our Christmas Shoeboxes are due August 30.

Leave them in the parlor, and Charlene Taylor

will carry then to the Wesley Heights UMC. Our

circles usually fill twenty-five boxes. We still

have a few boxes that have not been picked up.

Thank you to Circle VI for already returning their

boxes.

Rheaetta

Up Coming Events: August 18 (Saturday)

Stones River District Mini-Retreat, we have

several already wishing to attend this meeting on

special women of the UMW. Let me know if you

are interested because I need to turn in our

numbers by August 9.

September 7-9 Conference Spiritual Life Retreat

at Beersheba. I have applications. Applications

are due August 24.

Finally

The bazaar is coming! The bazaar is coming!

Friday, November 16! Save the Date!

UNITED METHODIST MEN

Redbird Housing Ministry

Our UMM is partnering with St. Mark’s

United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro to

build wall sections for a new house in Red

Bird Missionary Conference. A team at St.

Mark’s has developed “packages” of building

supplies which churches can purchase in order

to build prefabricated sections of a new home.

The home will be put together next spring in

Kentucky. So get out your hammers and join

the fellowship as we work for others! As soon

as the date for the build is set, we will let you

know. The build will take place in the

driveway and garage of the parsonage.

The next meeting of the United Methodist Men

is August 19, at 7:30 a.m. in the Fellowship

Hall. (NOTE NEW TIME!)

UMYF UMYF is going to be starting off this school year with a series on the Prodigal Son (using Lion King). Aren’t we all the prodigal son at times in our lives? Many times we decide what is best for our lives and realize down the road that our choices led us into the pigpen. How similar is Simba’s journey to the Prodigal Son’s journey? Join us at UMYF on August 12th to find out!

Once again, the mighty Wesley’s Warriors have shown us how hard

they are willing to work for others when they raised almost $1,000 in

donations with their beautiful sunflowers. Then they immediately

made their contribution to the I My Church Fund and the Imagination Library.

Thank you Wesley’s Warriors. You set a beautiful example for all. You

have proven that you don’t have to be many to be mighty. Thank you to

Charlene, Ann, Ardis, Suzy, and Joseph for the many ways you help our children grow in faith.

STEWARDSHIP OF OUR FIRST FRUITS OUR PRAYERS, OUR PRESENCE, OUR GIFTS, OUR SERVICE, AND OUR WITNESS

There are little God Sightings that we are so

familiar with, that we often take them for

granted. Then there are God Sighting that are

so overwhelming that there is no way we can

miss them. It is like a slap on the back of the

head with God saying “Here I am. See me?”

This past week Nicholas Bannister had such a

God Sighting. When he was stopped at a red

light, third in line and a car T-boned him on

the driver’s door and side. He came away

with just a few scratches. His car didn’t. What

a wonderful God Sighting. Glad you are fine,

Nicholas!

Sorry about the car.
