First United Methodist Church

Dear Family of Faith,

Words cannot adequately express how much

your thoughts and prayers have meant to me as

I battle the COVID-19 virus. All the calls, gifts

and the prayer shawl has been an affirmation of

how important we are to one another. I’m look-

ing forward to when I can rejoin you in our time

of worship.

I especially want to thank the Worship Team,

John Carney, the staff for taking care of the ser-

vices in my absence.

Grace and Peace Bro. Paul

A NOTE FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

Your Finance Committee met on September 21, 2020. We want to thank our faithful

congregation for your generosity over the past few months. Until this month, we have been

able to meet most of our obligations, including our apportionments.

However, the COVID virus and the inability to meet together as a congregation have placed

a hardship on many of our members. It has also led to a gradual reduction in our giving.

We have taken cost cutting measures, but are still not able to meet our basic expenses.

Rachel has done a great job managing our money from week to week, but we are

at a point now where we need immediate funds to meet our obligations.

We ask that you prayerfully consider your role in the financial health of our church so we

can continue our ministries to our community and to our world.

UMW October News

The UMW Executive Committee met Tuesday,

September 22 , to make some decisions for the

upcoming months.

As all have been waiting for an official decision on

our Annual Holiday Bazaar, we will not be able to

have it this year. This has been a long standing

tradition and because of the money we make, we

have been able to give a college scholarship each

year to someone attending Martin College, as well

as supporting many local charities, as well as

around the world. Please watch for information in

the November Newsletter, as to how we hope to

raise some money this year so we can continue to

support these many deserving activities.

Each Circle member is encouraged to send your

pledge dues to the treasurer of your circle and in

turn they will send to Edna Lee Borders, our UMW

treasurer and Edna Lee will send to our district

treasurer. Even though we cannot meet in

person, money is still needed to keep the

programs of the United Methodist Women

ongoing.

Circle Treasurers:

Circle 6 – Sylvia Pinson

Circle 7 – Janie Burke

Circle 8 – Rosemary Mooneyham

There will not be a meeting in November, but the

Executive Committee plans to meet on Tuesday,

December 8th, at 10:00 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall

to make plans for 2021. This is when we plan our

programs for the year, meals, etc. Hopefully

each Circle will have a representative to speak for

them. We will also make decisions as to which

charities we plan to support this year.

The plan at this time is to resume our regular

UMW meetings in January 2021.

Blessings,

Dinah Agnew, President

will be October 30 at 6:30 PM via Zoom.

Tennessee Annual Conference report

The 53rd Annual Conference for the Tennessee

Conference of the United Methodist Church was

convened via Zoom on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020.

The conference was led by Bishop Bill McAlilly.

Barbara Pate was the lay delegate to the

conference from Shelbyville First UMC. John

Carney was an at-large delegate from the

Stones River District. All communication and

voting was done electronically due to the in

person restrictions associated with the COVID 19

pandemic.

The theme of the conference was Hebrews

11:1. BY FAITH. The logo was a drawing of a

bridge, symbolic of the merging of the Memphis

Conference and the Tennessee Conference of

the United Methodist Church. Predominately, the

work of the conference was to continue to align

the two conferences in an effort to complete

the merger in 2022. The consolidation of

administrative services and physical locations of

offices and alignment of duties and funding

comprised the majority of the items that were

considered.

A budget was adopted for the conferences , as

well as a change in the method of assessing

apportionments for the churches and the

furtherance of direct billing for healthcare and

pension funding for the clergy to the churches.

With the retirement of TN Conference Treasurer,

Jim Allen, it was agreed that both conferences

would have one Treasurer. Larry Davis, who

presently serves as Memphis Conference

Treasurer, will take on this dual role. Details of

the budget and other resolutions passed during

the conference can be accessed by going to

tnumc.org/AC2020.

The meeting was productive and we

heard some inspiring messages from Bishop

McAllilly. These can be accessed at the website

listed above.

Hopefully next year the conference can be held

in person. I appreciate the opportunity to have

served as your lay delegate to the 2020

Tennessee Annual Conference of the United

Methodist Church. Barbara Pate

GO! BARB! GO!

Barb Mullikin has signed up

to be a St. Jude Hero in the

St. Jude Memphis ½

Marathon which is scheduled

for December 5, 2020. She

has set a goal of raising

$1,500 for St. Jude. Thanks

to many of you, she has

almost reached her goal. If you would like to

encourage her efforts as well, you can write a

check to St. Jude putting Barb’s name at the

bottom of the check. Either give your donation

to Bro. Paul or Barb or send it to the church.

To My Church Family,

Thank you. I want each of you to know how

much I appreciate the kind acts and prayers

during the loss of my oldest daughter, Christina

Tucker Kubik. She was very “Special.”

“The Lord gives us Grace to live thru each day.” (2 Timothy 4:17)
