Focusing the Gospel To the point - “The "magi from the east" followed the
light of a star. A light of heaven that guided them. A light of revelation that manifested "the newborn king of the Jews" to Gentile wise men. A light of warning that protected this Child from harm until his time had come. Like the magi, we must follow this light to the Light. Like the magi, we must offer "the child" homage- the gift of our very selves become the Light of his Presence. A Light that guides, reveals, warns.
To the first reading - The first reading announces to Jerusalem, "Your light has come." Upon Jerusalem "the LORD shines" and all nations "shall walk by your light." In the gospel, the light shines to lead the magi - all nations - to the Light of the world, the Christ Child.
To experience - All major occasions include some form of gift-giving: births, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings; even at funerals we send cards and flowers. It is not surprising that the magi bring gifts to the "newborn king"- gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their greatest gift, however, was the gift of themselves, expressed in their humble homage.
“We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.”
Matthew 2.1-12

Jubilee Year of Mercy January 3, 2016
The Epiphany of the Lord In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Epiphany celebrates God's mercy shining on the magi from a guiding star. Their kingdoms were far from Jerusalem, their religions far from God's covenant with Israel. At first the star led the magi to Jerusalem, where they could "recalculate" their quest with the help of God's own "GPS," the Jewish scriptures.
How challenging and humbling for the magi to discover that they would find the world's Messiah not in a palace but with a poor couple in an insignificant village. That's where God's mercy, shining in the star, led the magi to worship Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Today the magi invite us to "recalculate" our life's journey during this Jubilee Year - to follow the star of God's mercy along the way of humble love, to discover a renewed personal relationship with Jesus ourselves and so become "guiding stars" leading other seekers to find Jesus, too.

WEDNESDAY, January 6th. Classes for Grades 1-7 meet in St. Camillus Church at 3:30 pm and will dismiss at 5 pm in the School Auditorium. The Confirmation class meets at 4 pm in Church and dismisses at 5:30 pm. Parents are reminded that 45 hours of class-time are required to complete each year. Each week, classes meet for 90 minutes. Therefore students must attend 30 classes a year to be promoted. Students are reminded to please bring textbook, pencil/pen, and any folders which the teacher might have given to class EACH week. Students without textbooks can not actively participate in classroom instructions.
2. Students in our CCD program received a new set of Church envelopes. Since the number changes each year and the student’s envelope number is recorded, please use the NEW set of envelopes (for 2016) beginning TODAY. Please make sure each child uses their own envelope set as each child has their own individual number and we use that number to record the envelope for that specific child.
FOOD PANTRY: Our food pantry will be open on Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 12 Noon at St. Camillus. Each week, we distribute between 25 to 30 bags of food. We can use canned non-perishable foods, such as tuna fish, stew, peanut butter & jelly, canned fruit & vegetables, cereal, nuts, raisins, macaroni & cheese; and toilet paper, paper towels, soap.
PARISH DANCE: Our annual St. Patrick’s Dance will be held on SUNDAY AFTERNOON, March 6, 2016. Music will be provided by the John Crowley & The Summer Wind Band. (After many years, Johnny Murphy and the Coachmen are no longer performing.) Tickets will be available soon. ANNULMENTS: The Diocese of Brooklyn has announced that, in response to Pope Francis’ instructions, the following changes have been made to the process of granting Church Annulments: 1) Fees have been eliminated. 2) The process has been made easier and quicker 3) The Diocesan Tribunal can hear cases for all who live
in Brooklyn & Queens. If you would like to speak with someone about obtaining an annulment, please call 718-634-8229 and speak with any of the priests. If you are civilly married and would like to be married “in the Church”, please call 718-634-8229 and speak with any of the priests. ST. VIRGILIUS BUILDING UPDATE: A group of parishioners met with Stanley who represents the group that is negotiating with FEMA for the old School Buildings. It appears that progress has been made and that FEMA may award a GRANT of 1.4 million dollars to replace the “small school building” and repair the attached building. The grant award may be approved as early as February 1, 2016. In the new year (2016) we will resume meeting as a “Building Committee” to discuss plans. Thank you for your patience. BLOOD DRIVE: With the colder weather, the blood supply tends to dip in January as the need remains constant. There will be a BLOOD DRIVE in Springman Hall on SUNDAY, January 24th from 8 am to 2 pm.
