The Program Pact Clubs for 10–18 year-old adopted youth of color and their siblings are divided into four age groups called Tween Club, In-Be-Tween Club, Teen-ish Club and Teen Club. The Clubs focus on both social interactions among the youth and a designed curriculum tailored to adopted and fostered youth of African American, African, Latinx, Asian and Native American descent to explore their feelings and experiences related to adoption, race, family and identity. Monthly meetings are held during the school year and include mentoring sessions, facilitated discussions about race, being adopted and identity, as well as some field trips and off-site activities, social activities and projects where youth are given the opportunity to mentor younger members of the Pact community. Our staff is comprised of adopted adults, foster alum and other adults of color who, as trained allies, are all excited to offer support and guidance to the youth. Pact’s Club Coordinator Ben Powning, Pact’s Youth Programming Coordinator, will plan each session, including both outings and in-house gatherings, for all of the groups. Because of his own struggles during his tween and teen years to find and create a healthy racial and adoption identity, Ben is committed to providing a welcoming and nurturing space for the youth.
