The Roanoke Skier The Monthly Newsletter for the Roanoke Ski Club 1 May 2018 President’s Message Welcome to the RSC's new season! We officially start our new year May First. As we look forward to another exciting year, it's fun to take a moment and remember a few of the wonderful memories from this past season: We had a record attendance at our summer kick-off party; fun in the sun at Kiawah Island; our enormously successful giving back campaign, Operation Warm-where we donated 138 new winter coats to Roanoke City School children; multiple ski trips with double digit powder days; a delicious February lasagna dinner; an impromptu dance party in Colorado; another attendance record set for our end of season ski party and laugh fest; and so many, many more truly special moments together, that I couldn't possibly list them all. If you were not able to attend the April Membership Meeting - End of Ski Season Party, not only did you miss catching up with 160 friends and a hilarious comedian/musician, you missed our very important acknowledgment of two incredibly hard working outgoing board members. We proffer a big thank you to Dave Cohan, who has worked tirelessly organizing fantastic trips these past two years, and to Karen Strickland, who has dedicated significant amounts of time and energy maintaining the complicated details of 375 members. We also welcomed our new board members: Debbie Pfeiffer as Membership Director, and Bill Fleshman as Trip Director. I know we all look forward to their immense contribution over the next two years. In addition, we had a very special acknowledgement for one member who has always gone above and beyond for the club. Dr. Al Durham has been called to work on every ski trip he joins, when one of our members gets hurt. His orthopedic expertise, and general doctoring, has been invaluable to our club members. The show of hands of those he helped was profound and heartwarming. The club honored Dr. Al, and his lovely wife Beth, with a lifetime membership to the RSC, along with a club tee and hat, and a special logo engraved beer mug, which we are pretty sure will be put to good use! Please thank Al for his selfless dedication the next time you see him. We have already started planning a great new season, so mark your calendars for Sunday, July 15th to join us for 2018-2019 Kick-Off Party! Fondly, Marla Kemsey President

President’s Message

Welcome to the RSC's new season! TRIPS! TRIPS! TRIPS!

Well, the trip season is almost over, and the RSC took some fun and exciting trips to Kiawah Island (led by Pat Oberlin), Big Sky (Kate Steinbacher), Canaan Valley (Shelley Gibson and Dana Harlor), Snowmass/Aspen (Karen Saunders), Telluride (Shelley Gibson), and Crested Butte (Marla Kemsey). Thanks to the trip leaders who led these trips, and thanks to the participants for supporting the club’s trips! I have enjoyed being your Trip Director, and as of May 1, I am handing over the reins to Bill Fleshman. Our final long-distance trips will be the Western Mediterranean Cruise to Italy, France, Monte Carlo and Spain (Dave & Sharon Brammer), from May 14-25 with 45 participants, and the Croatia Adventure (Bill Fleshman), from September 7-18 with 40.
