KNOWLEDGE CENTRE

IN tHIS ISSUE WE COVER SOmE VERY ImPORtANt INFORmAtION ABOUt tHE AGE StAtEmENt

OF A WHISKY. PICK UP A BOttLE OF CHIVAS ANd YOU’LL SEE It HAS EItHER tHE NUmBER 12, 18

OR 25 YEARS OLd ON tHE LABEL. tHIS IS tHE tRUE AGE OF A WHISKY. BY LAW, tHIS REPRESENtS

tHE AGE OF tHE YOUNGESt WHISKY IN tHE BOttLE. FOR ExAmPLE, IN CHIVAS 12 YEAR OLd

YOU mIGHt HAVE OLdER WHISKIES IN YOUR BLENd BUt YOU dEFINItELY WON’t HAVE ANY

BELOW 12 YEARS – tHAt WOULd BE ILLEGAL!

But why is the age so important?

Well firstly, the longer the whisky

matures in the barrel, the better it gets.

We know that the single malt whiskies

that go into the Chivas blend draw their

flavour, aroma, and texture from the oak

casks in which they rest. Over a long

time, whisky develops a bolder aroma,

a deeper colour, more complex flavours

and a smoother finish.

But having an old whisky doesn’t simply

guarantee quality. You need to expertly

manage this intricate ageing process over

all these years. this wood management is

a skill in itself.

thankfully, we know Chivas is committed

to this investment in time by producing

aged whisky of the highest quality. You can

rest assured that when you know the age,

you know you have exceptional whisky.

The Chivas Legends Dinner

Aside from the exclusive Armani Hotel setting in

downtown Burj Khalifa, the main attractions were the

legends themselves - the Chivas master Blender, Colin

Scott and the star of the silver screen and Hollywood

legend, Colin Firth. Colin has been enjoying somewhat of

a purple patch in his profession picking up the best actor

Academy Award for his performance in the King’s Speech.

It was a rare treat to be able to hear him speaking about

this successful film, especially with it being so recent and

on everyone’s mind during the dubai Film Festival. And

of course we were treated to acute insight into the entire

Chivas range by the legendary master Blender, Colin Scott.

Each course was complemented by a tasting of 12, 18 and

25 year old Chivas Regal whiskies.

All in all it was a highly enjoyable evening,

chronicling the ongoing success of legendary

whisky with legendary people.

For all those who missed out on the master Blender tour, you can re-cap quickly on how to

make the Speyside Cosmo - the perfect cocktail to get the party started!

Everybody loves a Cosmo to get into the spirit of things. But importantly with this version

the fruity flavours of the raspberry are perfectly balanced by the Chivas 12 Year Old.

Remember to check out the Facebook page and the website for the latest cocktails of the

month so you can be inspired to wow your patrons the whole year round.

Master Blender TourWith the master Blender in town, Chivas organised some exclusive events around

the region including dubai, Abu dhabi and Qatar.

It was an opportunity for Colin Scott to give some insight into the Chivas range

in an intimate setting. He shared some of the skills needed to be a master Blender

plus some of the more light-hearted perks of having what some people consider to

be the best job in the world!

Chivas Brand Ambassador and master mixologist, max Warner also demonstrated

some of the versatile ways that you can enjoy Chivas in the form of whisky

cocktails. Inspiring people to try a different angle, max showed exactly how to

appreciate Chivas 12 Year Old by marrying it with new flavour combinations.

How long have you been working

here?

I have worked here for 4 years but

overall it’s been 9 years as I worked at

another outlet in the hotel previously.

What is your favourite way to enjoy

Chivas?

Well I’m a big fan of Chivas 18! don’t

get me wrong, I love Chivas 12 but

for me 18 is the best. I usually enjoy it

with a bit of water or soda with ice.

What’s your most memorable

experience in Dubai?

To be honest, there has been too

many to remember! But most of

them are related to working with

friends here at the Sea View Hotel.

What do you do to relax in your

time off?

We play some cricket at jebel Park on

a Friday and I also like to go to the

beach for a swim when I have time.

You must be happy with the Indian

Cricket team of late?

Yes! It was such a good tournament

for us. I watched it at home with all

my friends and that was a good day!

What would you like to do for the

next Academy event?

I have never been out on the

jumeirah Palm so seeing that end

of town would be great!

CHIVAS DISCOVERY

IN tHIS EdItION OF CHIVAS dISCOVERY WE BRING YOU A FIRSt HANd ACCOUNt OF A VISIt tO tHE StRAtHISLA dIStILLERY BY

mORGAN CUmmINS, OUR VERY OWN CHIVAS WHISKY tRAINER FROm tHE UAE. HE RECENtLY EmBARKEd ON HIS mAIdEN tRIP

tO SPEYSIdE. HERE IS tHE FIRSt CHAPtER OF HIS StRAtHISLA ExPERIENCE.

After spending 10 hours travelling from

dubai, the anticipation was building as I

arrived at Aberdeen Airport. I was promptly

met by Colin from Chivas Brothers. He drove

me the final stretch of the way, an hour-long

trip to the distillery.

Not long after leaving the city limits, the

landscape changed to dramatic mountains

on view from all angles. the rugged,

windswept terrain looked as if it had its own

story to tell. that's exactly what I was looking

forward to 'hearing' later in every sip of

Chivas Regal!

We seemed to be continuously climbing

as we carved and snaked our way through

the hilly landscape. It was not long before

picture-postcard snow-capped mountains

appeared in the distance. I should have been

sleeping (after the night flight) but I couldn't

- the excitement of visiting the home of

Chivas was all too much!

As we approached the town of Keith I knew,

from the description on the label of every

bottle of Chivas, that we hadn't far to travel.

And I had already counted over 30 signposts

for other famous distilleries. We were

definitely in whisky country!

the undulating valleys sloped into lush

green textures separated only by sheer drops

of shale and clusters of bramble. I saw the

famous Spey River twist out of the lower hills

and it tumbled its way alongside us as we

drove. With the remnants of the winter chill

lingering in the spring air, the icy looking

water was not exactly inviting me in for a

dip but it looked clean, clear and the perfect

place to source one of the three important

ingredients of Chivas.

We drove through the market town of Keith,

and then turned left down a tree-lined street

and there it was - the Strathisla distillery in

full view. What I had seen so many times in

a hundred different photographs was now

standing before me!

After the trip through the beautiful Speyside,

I could now fully appreciate how the natural

environment influenced the taste of every

single bottle of Chivas Regal. I had only one

thought on my mind: tasting some Chivas!

But I'll save that story for next time.

You can look forward to the next issue of

The Round where you can read about the next

chapter of my whisky journey.
