T he Talmud in Tractate Shabbat (20b) declares unequivocally that
women are liable in the lighting of Cha-
nuka candles. Though the Mitzvah is a time-
bound positive commandment, from which
generally women are exempt, they are liable
in this Mitzvah as af hein hayu b’oto ha-nes
(they too were a part of the miracle). This
principle is applied in two other cases:
(1) The requirement to read/hear Megilat
Esther
(2) The requirement to drink 4 cups of wine
on the seder night.
One of the essential questions that emerges based on these statements is
the nature of women’s requirement in these three mitzvoth. On the one
hand, we can view this principle as highly powerful and influential and
thus making women liable in all three mitzvoth on the same level as men.
On the other hand, we could view the af hein principle as external and thus
making women liable on an alternative level. The ramifications of this
question are immense. If the af hein principle is highly powerful, then
women and men are liable on the same level. Their equality would then
allow a woman to fulfill the obligation on behalf of a man. However, if it
is an external principle, a woman could fulfill her own obligation, but
would be unable to similarly fulfill the obligation on behalf of a man.
Maimonides is fairly clear in his statements. The af hein principle defines
the requirement of women as equal to men in all ways. Thus a woman
could potentially read the megillah or light Chanuka candles for a man.

GOING TO SHUL REDUCES DEATH RISK!
Dear Friends,
Attending religious services can reduce mortality risk
by approximately 20 percent, a new study from Ye-
shiva University has revealed.
The research team led by Eliezer Schnall, PhD., clini-
cal assistant professor of psychology at Yeshiva Col-
lege of Yeshiva University analyzed the religious
practices of 92,3935 women aged 50-79, participating
in the Women’s Health Initiative. After examining
the prospective association of religious affiliation, re-
ligious service attendance and strength and comfort
derived from religion with subsequent cardio-vascular
events and overall rates of mortality, the researchers
found that those attending religious services showed a
20 percent decrease in death risk.
“Interestingly, the protection against mortality pro-
vided by religion cannot be entirely explained by ex-
pected factors that include enhanced social support of
friends or family, lifestyle choices and reduced smok-
ing and alcohol consumption”, said Dr. Schnall, who
was lead author of the study. “There is something
here that we do not quite understand. It is always
possible that some unknown or unmeasured factors
confounded these results”, he added.
The investigators concluded that although religious
behavior is associated with a reduction in death rates,
the physical relationships leading to that effect are not
yet understood and require further investigation.
If you want to live longer -- SEE YOU IN SHUL!!!

Alternatively, Tosafot (Megilah 4b) state that a
woman cannot read Megilat Esther for a man, as
the woman’s requirement is only to hear the me-
gilah, while the man’s requirement is to read/
hear the megilah. They thus conclude that
while a woman could read for another woman,
she could not read for a man.
In terms of bottom line Halacha, we follow the
opinion of the Tosafot, that women cannot fulfill
the requirement of Megilat Esther for a man.
However, R. Joseph B. Soloveitchik noted in a
letter to his uncle that what is true for Megilat
Esther may not be true for Chanuka candles.
Whereas the reading of the megilah is a personal
or individual requirement, the Chanuka candles
are a requirement upon the home (neir ish
u’veito). In terms of the home, we (men and
women) are all equal in our responsibilities to it
and thus the fulfillment of this Mitzvah.
Practically, the women of any house could light
the candles for the men. Moreover, if the man of
the house will not be home during the time when
Chanuka candles should be ideally lit, the
woman of the house should light during the
proper time and fulfill the home’s requirement.
Similarly, this “household requirement” applies
equally to every member of the household.
While the prevalent practice seems to be that
married women fulfill the Mitzvah with their
husband’s candles, this may not be Halachikally
ideal.
R. Soloveitchik felt that because of the unique
nature of the Chanuka Candles, ideally each and
every person in the household should light a
chanukiyah of their own in order to fulfill the
Mitzvah in its grandest form. Indeed, R. So-
loveitchik’s wife would light her own chunuki-
yah and that has been the practice of his married
daughters as well in their own homes.

RRRRABBIABBIABBIABBI ’’’’ SSSS S S S STUDYTUDYTUDYTUDY Rabbi Moshe Portnoy Library News
We are proud to announce that we have
recently supplemented the Rabbi Moshe
Portnoy Library at the Young Israel of
Plainview with many new sefarim. These
additions include all currently available
editions of Artscroll Yerushalmi with Eng-
lish translation, as well as several com-
mentaries on Chumash and tfilah. Also
new on the shelves are books on halacha and philosophy.
We encourage your involvement in the li-
brary in at least two ways.
First, learn. The best and highest use of
our library is our steady reliance on these
books as tools fundamental to our growth
and understanding of Judaism. Our eclec-
tic collection contains books in Hebrew,
English (and even Yiddish!) on a wide va-
riety of subjects by classic and contempo-
rary scholars. The library is available
whenever the shul is open so feel free to
browse or peruse as you see fit. We seek
to enhance our collection and have gotten
a few excellent suggestions on more books
to buy--if there is a resource that you be-
lieve should be incorporated in the library,
let us know.
As a corollary to this first precept, we also
i mp l o r e e a c h u s e r o f t h e
library to make sure that these valuable
sources are not missing when
others look to learn from them. To maxi-
mize use by the most people, this library is
designed for reference, not for lending. (Continued on page 6)

YIP YOUTHYIP YOUTHYIP YOUTHYIP YOUTH
Hello YIP
There are many communities with the “Young Israel” brand, but of all such places that I have
been to, none can compare in greatness of acronym to “YIP.” That along with the open arms
and warmth the Plainview community has shown us, has made it very easy for Abby and me to
settle in. We are very excited to be a part of this community and have great plans for the
youth department!
Shabbos Groups
We have a very talented team of group leaders this year, with a nice mix of veterans and rook-
ies, running groups every Shabbos morning. They help the kids with the davening, play
games, and discuss the Parshas Hashavua.
We recently added a more formal group for the Nursery and Kindergartners that is better able
to focus the davening and programs for their age group. The play area for nursery and younger
kids is still open for parents and kids to come play.
Tishrei Programming
Just a few weeks back from summer, we entered the always exciting month of Tishrei. While
the entire month seemed like a whole bunch of Fridays and Shabboses, with few work and
school days in between, the youth department had a busy schedule. With much thanks to those
who gave their time to help, we ran a special groups program Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
mornings. Our youngsters did a beautiful job decorating the shul Sukkah during our annual
Sukkah Decorating Party, “Pizza in a Hut.” Over 75 of us hopped around the neighborhood on
the first day of Sukkos, many thanks again to all of our hosts. Simchas Torah was a blast with
the All Stars: Dancing Division. Lots of fun, excitement, and of course, candy, was had by all.
Chanukah Plans & Later Trips
Still to come are special programs for Chanukah, in addition to other fun trips and events. We
are going to jump right into Chanukah with plenty of oily foods, Maccabi games, and Dreidel
making; look out for details.

work for borrowing and lending a broad range of items, including, furniture, baby items
and more.
We are now accepting items for our GEMACH!
Please look around your home (closets, cabinets, basement and garage) for useful items that
you would be willing to lend. Appropriate items to list in the Gemach include:

Unfortunately, some popular volumes
have been off the shelves for many months
or more than one year. These include sev-
eral volumes of Mishnayot and Gmarot
from Seder Moed that many in our shul
often seek. If you have these or other vol-
umes from the shul library at home, we
would greatly appreciate having these
books back on the shelves for use by all.
And, as a new school year is well under-
way, please remember that, while the
books in our library may be used in shul as
a supplement for the texts that your chil-
dren use at school, they should not be
taken home as a substitute for obtaining
the texts needed for school.
A second way of getting involved in the
Rabbi Moshe Portnoy Library is to support
it by endowing books. We thank those
who have already donated to the dedica-
tion of the Library and we welcome those
who will support its expansion. We intend
to circulate soon a list of available book
dedications and hope that you will partici-
pate enthusiastically.
We extend a sincere thank you to all those
who contributed toward the establishment
of the Rabbi Moshe Portnoy Memorial Li-
brary. We expect that plaques will be
posted soon to commemorate your gener-
ous donations.
Thank you for your support and we hope
you take full advantage of this vital re-
source.

RABBI MEIR KAHANE HY”DRABBI MEIR KAHANE HY”DRABBI MEIR KAHANE HY”DRABBI MEIR KAHANE HY”D by Alex Stern
Sunday, 18 Cheshvan marked 18 years
since the assassination of Rabbi Meir Ka-
hane HY”D, the founder of the Jewish De-
fense League and Israel’s Kach Party.
Kahane was known in the United States
and Israel for his strong political, national-
ist views, exemplified in his promotion of
a Greater Israel based on Jewish law. He
founded two controversial movements:
The Jewish Defense League (JDL) in the
USA, and Kach, an Israeli political party.
In 1984, Kach gained one seat in the
Knesset and Rabbi Meir Kahane became a
member. In 1986 Kach was declared a
racist party by the Israeli government and
banned from the Knesset, and in 1994, fol-
lowing the Meoras HaMachpela massacre
by Baruch Goldstein the movement was
outlawed completely. Kahane’s Knesset
career was ended by Section 7a of Basic
Law: The Knesset (1958): “Prevention of
Participation of Candidates List.”
In 1990, after a speech in a Manhattan,
New York Marriott Hotel, Kahane was as-
sassinated. The prime suspect, El Sayyid
Nosair, was subsequently acquitted of
murder but convicted on gun possession
charges.
Meir Kahane was buried in Jerusalem,
where thousands of people attended his
funeral.

The mikveh , Baruch Hashem, has been very busy lately. We began an ex-
perimental system of “no appointments” for the women's mikveh, which we
hope is successful and accommodating to our women's’ needs. We are in the
process of evaluating its use, and hope that there is a lot of positive feedback
with regards to its implementation.
For a quick explanation, the mikveh answering machine is updated every
week, usually Friday, to announce the hours motzei Shabbat for that week as
well as for Sunday-Thursday hours. Please recheck the machine regularly to
be aware of the hours. (There is usually a 1 ½ hour window motzei Shabbat
and a two hour window Sunday and weeknights.) Please note that if our des-
ignated “no- appointment window” doesn’t work due to extenuating circum-
stances, we can schedule an appointment at a different time.
Additionally, please note our machine states the time for last bath and last
shower so that our shomeret can leave on time. If our message says “last bath
7:50” that means please be at the mikveh no later than 7:50 pm in order to
take your bath and perform your immersion before 8:30 pm, when the mikveh
would be closing. If you need an hour for a bath, please arrive at least an hour
before the mikveh is supposed to close. Please be considerate.
We are trying to put together a more complete email list for the mikveh as-
sociation and hope to get a website put together soon, also. If you have not re-
ceived mikveh emails please email Diane to have your name included in the
list ([email protected]).
Lastly, we will be organizing a Chanukah Wing Wan fundraiser and hope
everyone is able to participate. Please watch for emails/mailing. Please call
Diane Rabin with questions/concerns. Thank you.

When I was growing up, my
grandmother always made a large get
together for all the relatives during
Hanukkah. She spent days before the
get together preparing Turkish pas-
tries such as cheese and spinach
borekas and boyos. Our traditional
fried food was bumuelos, which we
also referred to as loukemas. Since
they taste best when freshly made, the
batter was always prepared after the
guests had arrived, and unlike the oil
which lasted

I con-
tinue in the tradition of my grand-
mother, but we have also added a new
tradition to our Hanukkah celebration.
When my son David did a report on
Romania for his fifth grade class, he
discovered Papanasi or Romanian
cheese fritters. The recipe combines
two Hanukkah traditions in one; it
contains cheese and is fried.

until doubled in bulk.
Place oil in frying pan to half the height of the pan. Heat oil until it
reaches 3250. Drop batter by spoonfuls into oil. Fry on both sides un-
til golden in color. Drain well on paper towels. Serve hot with honey
or sugar.
