A regional distribution and northern logistics centre is to be

built at the Sioux Lookout Regional Airport.

That announcement was made last Friday in Thunder Bay, where a memorandum of understanding was signed by Lac Seul First Nation, K i t c h e n u h m a y k o o s i b Inninuwug (KI) and Creewest GP Inc.

The partnership comes after more than two years of collaboration in the First Nations – Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI) pilot program.

KI, Lac Seul, and the

Municipality of Sioux Lookout were chosen by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and CANDO funded by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) to participate.

The goal of the distribution and logistics centre is to supply northern First Nation communities with fresh food products and consumer goods at lower costs and to avoid food expiring or spoiling before it can reach northern communities.

KI Chief James Cutfeet said food has always been expensive in the north.

He added shipping costs are exorbitant, especially where there aren’t any roads to connect communities to major hubs.

Lac Seul First Nation Chief Clifford Bull said there needs to be a shift in how goods are shipped to the Far North.

Bull explained, “The biggest hurdle was feasibility versus viability so the partners engaged other northern communities and focused on cultural feasibility which studies the project’s impact on the local culture.”

Creewest GP Inc. reached out to provide their support for the distribution and logistics centre that will provide warehousing for Aboriginal communities in northern Ontario and provide affordable logistics and shipping of healthy food and essential goods.

Gifts pour in for Bearskin Lake donation driveShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

SANTA Claus is getting a hand from Beamish

and Associates this Christmas.

Cathy Beamish works frequently with First Nation communities, explained receptionist Tiffany Thompson, setting the stage for a donation drive that will make a big impact on children in Bearskin Lake.

“We were contacted by George Chapman, a NNADP (National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program) worker in Bearskin Lake, and he asked us if we could come up

with some donations for the children of Bearskin Lake,” explained Thompson. “Due to some unfortunate circumstances in Bearskin, around Christmas the money was tight for all the families, and he was wondering if we could get together some toys, hats, mittens, scarves and coats so that the children would have something to open at Christmastime.

“I was put in charge of this mission and got right to work using the power of social media to get the message out there to all my family and friends that this was a great cause and the response was mind-

blowing,” Thompson shared. “We got so many donations of clothes, toys and money from all over southern Ontario.”

The donation drive was very successful.

“Between those generous donations and all the staff at Beamish and Associates, we are able to send just over $1000 worth of donations, which is around five to six boxes full of Christmas cheer to some deserving kids,” Thompson said.

Beamish and Associates staff who helped out and donated include Catherine Beamish, Robert Labossiere, Mike McCarl, Matthew Angeconeb, Julie Ransom, Diane MacKinnon, Erin Boone, Keltie Coupar, Josette St. Pierre, Colleen Haskins, and Thompson. From southern Ontario, Jackie and Bill Thompson, Sandra Thompson, and Amber Stewart sent in donations.

The boxes of gifts were sent to Bearskin Lake on December 7.

“My only regret is that I won’t get to see the smiles on their faces Christmas morning,” Thompson said.

What is it? With two-thirds of training costs paid for by the government, the Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG) is a cost-

shared investment between the government and employers in employee skills training. The employer selects both the type of training and the individuals to be trained. Trainees can either be new or existing employees.

Employer benefits: Cost savings: The COJG provides direct financial support for employee training which frees up money for you to

spend on other projects.

Satisfy immediate training gaps: Fulfill your organization's mandatory training requirements, or invest in training that will help your business grow.

Boost employee morale: By investing in your employees' professional growth, you will foster more confident and happier workers.

Employer eligibility: Employer must be licensed to operate in Ontario. Employer must employ the individual(s) selected for training. Training must be delivered by a pre-approved third party based in Ontario.

Training must be one year or less in duration.

Training examples: First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Safe Food Handling, WHMIS, Suicide Intervention, technician certifications,

equipment installation certifications, plus any other industry specific training. Talk to an Employment Counselor from Sioux-Hudson Employment Services for help assessing your exact training needs.

The club will be hosting Snowarama again this year in January and will be holding their annual poker derby on February 6. They will draw the winner of their annual snowmobile raffle at the poker derby.

Snowmobile permits are available this year at Mascotto’s Marine and Sioux-per Auto Parts.

Sayers reminds that anyone who buys a permit is automatically a member of the club.

Ron Laverty, president of the Nordic Nomads Cross-Country Ski Club, said, “We go to bed every night praying for the snow and cold.”

The club operates 32 kilometres of trail each winter.

Laverty said the golf course trail is open, but cautioned there are bare patches and recommended people only use skis there they don’t mind getting damaged.

Last Saturday at the Recreation Centre, the club held registration for children’s learn to ski programs and sold club memberships.

Club members also held an annual fundraiser there at which people could take their skis to be waxed for a fee.

Laverty said something the club would like to highlight this season is their dog trail.

“For people that ski with their dogs, we don’t want them skiing on the regular cross country ski

trails. If you start at the Cedar Bay trail head, and ski down the main road to the cabins, you’ll

see that there are trail markers with the dog trail marked on it… it’s about four kilometres

out and four kilometres back. It’s groomed for skating and for classic. We highly encourage

people with dogs to use that trail.”

Club memberships are available at Al’s

Sports Excellence and Laverty pointed out that day passes are also available.

Dive club raising funds, making spring plansShayla Bradley

THE recently revitalized Patricia Pelican SCUBA

club is hard at work, fundraising and planning for the dive season ahead.

“We’re currently doing a seafood sale fundraiser,” shared Erin Ewaniuk.

King crab legs, live lobster, bacon wrapped scallops, plain scallops, jumbo fancy shrimp, tiger prawns, and salmon filets are available, and any member of the club has order forms, said Ewaniuk. The order will be placed on December 14 with home delivery December 21.

On New Year’s Day the club will hold a polar dip challenge. They are looking for participants and pledges. Money raised will be used to buy a new compressor.

The club is working toward becoming affiliated with Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS),

a group focused on the study, preservation, and promotion of appreciation of Ontario’s marine heritage. The local group is planning to become certified for archaeological dives, explained Ewaniuk, noting there are interesting items in Sioux Lookout’s waters, including old

bottles, arrowheads, and gun stocks.

“With that, we plan to partner up with SOS, hopefully, and get some of their members here to collaborate and figure out where would be a significant place to dive,” she shared.

“This spring we have a lot of activities planned,”

Ewaniuk added. The club plans to

provide a recertification course for those who want to get back into diving, and a try-a-dive for newcomers.

There are approximately 20 members in the Patricia Pelican club.

“We are looking to the future,” Ewaniuk shared.

We go to bed every night praying for the snow and cold

A toastMy brother Chris and I

drank a special toast to Ma.We were interrupted

Thursday night as we relaxed at the patio table in Chris’ backyard, enjoying some brotherly reminiscences and good-natured kibitzing after my arrival at his home in Ohio.

“Your mother just jumped off the shelf and shattered her frame,” sister-in-law Marge announced from the doorway.

Our mother’s picture had lived on that dining room shelf “forever,”

Marge answered to my question. She swore that it hadn’t been touched or moved for months, and when it crashed to the floor no one was anywhere near it.

Didn’t impress Chris and me much at the moment - stuff falls off counters and shelves all the time.

But after a few beers and bumps, and a generosity of wine in the twilight, we convinced ourselves that Ma was trying to join us, so we humored her and invited her to sit with us for a while, and we shared

wonderful memories and laughs.

The next day Chris and I drove an hour to visit the grave of Ma and Dad in an

amazingly pleasant country cemetery. It was only my second visit - I was there about 35 years ago shortly after Dad was buried.

We didn’t stay very long. Didn’t have to. It was a powerfully beautiful experience and a peaceful moment for the heart.

Kenora MP Bob Nault will be holding

constituency clinic December 16

Kenora MP Bob Nault is looking to hear from you. Nault will be holding a constituency clinic in Sioux Lookout December 16.

“As people might recall, I made a

commitment during the campaign that we would start having constituency clinics around the riding. They give people the opportunity to sit down face-to-face with their member to talk about issues that are a concern to them, and that confront us as Canadians,” he said.

“These constituency clinics give us an opportunity to hear from our community about issues that are important to them, like employment insurance, Revenue Canada issues, immigration issues, and passport issues. These are all the things that reflect the relationship between people and their Canadian government,” said Nault.

The clinic is open to anyone who wishes to participate; however, an appointment is required.

While offices are still being set up in Northwestern Ontario, Nault has moved into his office in Ottawa. The office is located at 230 Confederation Building.

He will spend the next two weeks in Ottawa while the house is sitting. He’ll then return in time for the constituency clinics as well as hosting Christmas parties. There will be a free Christmas party Sioux Lookout open to all community members.

The party in Sioux Lookout will begin at 7 o’clock on Wednesday in the basement of the Sioux Lookout Legion.

If you wish to set up a meeting for the constituency clinics please call Joel Tallerico at (613)-996-1161.

Nault is also reminding residents that sending a letter to him is completely free. All you need to do is address it to Bob Nault, Member of Parliament, Kenora Riding and no postage is required.

Question of the week:

Starratt Airways Beech 18, CF-BGY sits behind a stack of wooden boxes on the dock at Hudson in the late 1930’s. This isn’t just another load of freight though, the boxes contain gold bars from the Red Lake goldfields. It was a different time obviously, no security in sight, just a stack of gold sitting on a dock. At today’s gold price, the total value of those seven gold bars is an astounding 11 million dollars Canadian.

Ron Basaraba, Chief Executive Officer for Creewest, said the focus can now be shifted to strategies on how to make the business grow to be sustainable with all partners at the table.

Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance said positive and strong relationships were

forged during the feasibility process for the project.

He added the partners in the project will work together to address the challenge of Aboriginal

peoples, living both on and off-reserve, facing high rates of food insecurity, and improve access to healthy food.

Cutfeet concluded, “As indicated in the

mandate letter to the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, food security in the north is one of this government’s top priorities.”

Students put best feet forward at QEDHS fashion show

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

STUDENTS at Queen Elizabeth District High School

put their knowledge of fashion and aesthetics on display last week in a day and night themed fashion show.

Students in Kristi Pianka’s grade 11 Understanding Fashion class put on the show, which had students and a former fashion student model clothing on the catwalk from local retailers.

Clothing for the show was provided by McTaggarts, Red Apple, and Five Mile Corner.

The school’s own line of clothing was also featured.

“It went very well,” Pianka said.

“The community is always really good at supporting the students at events like this and we always appreciate that,”

Michelle Theriault’s grade 10-12 hair and aesthetics class did make-up and hair for the fashion show models.

“They were very proud of themselves,” Theriault concluded.

“It was great for them to see their hard work on display.”

Moonlight madness wraps up with drawShayla Bradley

stAff Writer THE 2015 moonlight madness was a

success all around, with high numbers of businesses and shoppers involved.

Shelley Read was this year’s draw winner. A regular moonlight madness shopper, she earned her winning ballot by shopping at McTaggart’s.

“I was surprised,” she said. “I was totally shocked.”

She highlighted the number of people who were out shopping

that evening.“It was busy,” she

said. “I was really surprised about how many people were out… I was quite impressed.”

Gift certificates in hand, she is looking forward to making a few more purchases.

“I love shopping,” she laughed.

“We had 14 businesses in total participating, from downtown and a few more signed up in the moonlight madness

mall,” shared Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce president Ubay Almassraf. “Every year there’s always people out… I went out and drove around and there was lots of traffic out. People were enjoying it.”

Almassraf said the chamber is already in the process of planning the dates for next year.

“It’s one of the things that brings more of the

local shopping,” he said. “The local businesses put on some deals and discounts. We have somebody here who won, and at the end of the day we celebrate with them and it just creates more shopping in Sioux Lookout.”

“It’s an opportunity for the chamber to host an event that gets the chamber members involved, as well as local residents,” added Tiana Korobanik, chamber

customer service training coordinator. “It was a great opportunity to have the old Northern furniture store as our moonlight madness mall.

I definitely thought that was a success.”

Korobanik said she dropped by the mall during moonlight madness and vendors

told her it was a great evening that helped out businesses.

“Really, that’s our goal, to focus on business and promote

local shopping, and support one another,” she said.

The annual draw attracted a lot of participation, showing that shoppers were busy that evening.

“There were definitely over 1000 ballots, averaging about 70 to 75 per store,” Korobanik shared, adding that

there were more retail participants this year as well.

“We definitely want to strive to make it bigger and better every year,” she said.

The chamber is continuing with holiday events throughout December, including the Santa Claus parade starting at 5 p.m.

December 13, a last minute market December 19 at the chamber market location, and Christmas light judging over December 12 and 13.

“We’ll be taking pictures to feature in the Bulletin, so we really hope to see everyone’s creativity and of course, the more the merrier,” said Korobanik.

(QEDHS) boys hockey team took on the Dryden Eagles in their home opener on December 1, in a game that had everyone on the edge of their seats.

to tie the game 5-5 and force overtime.

When that didn’t produce a winner, the teams emptied half their benches in a shoot-out that had the Eagles come out on top with the 6-5 win.

Warriors co-coach Karl Schulz said it was a tough loss for the team.

“There’s no quit on this team,” he added. “They’re Warriors from start to finish.”

Schulz said he gives credit where credit is due.

“You have to take your hat off to Dryden. They played a good game.”

Schulz said the community can expect big things from the team this season. The Warriors battle it out in the eagles zone.

Water levels high in Lac Seul basin according to LWCBShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

ACCORDING to the Lake of the Woods

Control Board, water levels and flows are very

high for this time of year.High amounts of rainfall

occurred in November, including the second highest on record in the Lac Seul basin. In response

to the increase in inflows, outflow has been increased from Lac Seul and Lake of the Woods. Winter conditions should lead to declined flows in the basin

in December.“High flows and rising

Songs of the seasonThe Sioux Lookout Community Choir performed for two packed houses last Sunday at Sacred Heart Church during the annual Festival of Carols.

The choir received a standing ovation after treating their audience to a mix of traditional Christmas favourites along with some songs that may have been new to listeners.

Proceeds from this year’s performance will be used to help sponsor the refugee family Sioux Lookout is taking in.

Aspiring chefs bistro dishes prove popular Tim Brody

A new pilot program is giving learners with culinary flair a

chance to learn new skills and take their cooking to the next level.

Kanina Terry teaches the class of 15 learners and shared, “It’s a

program that’s running through SLAAMB (Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board) and Patal Vocational School out of Winnipeg.”

She explained, “Students have a classroom at SLAAMB and they use the Legion kitchen for assignments and catering.”

The program started in August and runs through to March.

Last Saturday, upstairs at the Sioux Lookout Recreation Centre, students ran a pop-up bistro which sold out.

Dishes included chili and bannock, pumpkin-curry soup with bannock,

wild rice salad with bannock, pulled pork with coleslaw, and baked goods.

Students made everything from scratch.

“I just told them I want everyone to make something for this event and I had them give me their recipes and if I saw something like a can of icing I said no, we’ve got to make that from scratch,” Terry said.

Students are cooking up lunch this Friday at the SLAAMB office on Front

Street at 11a.m. They invite the community to attend.
