Sioux Lookout sets new winter snowfall record

The numbers are in and probably to no one’s surprise Sioux Lookout

experienced one of the coldest, snowiest winters on record.

Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with environment Canada, looked at temperature and precipitation numbers for December through March.

These were his findings. “December to March this year the mean temperature was minus 19. There was actually one winter colder, the winter of 1916-1917 when the mean temperature was minus 21… Otherwise it was very cold and much below normal. December was about seven degrees below normal. January

was three and a half degrees below normal. February was four and a half degrees below normal, and March was about four and a half degrees below normal. April continued the trend being about four degrees below normal.”

Asked about snowfall during the winter he stated, “For snowfall, you did set a record. I found snowfall numbers of 349 centimetres this winter. The old record was in the winter of 53-54 when you had 337 centimetres.”

March was the snowiest month of the winter with 82 centimetres accumulating.

Kimbell’s conclusion of the winter of 2013-2014 in Sioux Lookout, “every month was snowier and colder than average.”

March alerts public to suicide awareness and prevention

DeSPITe the cold weather, 150 people of all ages gathered

in the parking lot across from the Royal Canadian Legion last Wednesday in preparation for a march to commemorate the Yellow Ribbon Walk for Life for Suicide Prevention and Awareness.

The first march in Sioux Lookout took place in 2006. It was organized by Norma Kejick from the Northern Nishnawabe education Council.

She spoke of her reasons for initiating the event. “On easter Sunday 2005 my nephew eric Kejick, took his own life by suicide. This changed our

family lives forever.“That same year, five

students who attended NNeC schools took their lives by suicide and eric was one of them.

“I decided then that I wanted to do something to help our students. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do but I knew I had to do something. I told my family that there was going to be a walk next year. I didn’t know where we were walking to or from but I knew there was going to be a walk.

“I went online and came across the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. I contacted the Canadian chapter in May 2005 and by September 2005 we had 25 staff members trained in the

Gate Keeper program. Then in 2006, we started the Yellow Ribbon Walk for Life.”

This year’s march started at 11:30 a.m. and, accompanied by a police escort, the marchers moved down Front Street to the traditional chanting and drumming of community members using the hand drum of the Thunder Bay Nishnawabe Aski Nation which had been loaned for the occasion.

The procession turned left onto Third Avenue and finally arrived at their destination, Queen elizabeth District high School on Fair Street.

All individuals, at the outset of the event, were given yellow balloons and asked to

Area leaders share thoughts on upcoming provincial election, Ring of Fire announcement


SIOux Lookouters will join their fellow Ontarians in

heading to the polls on June 12.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell said she supports the

decision of her NDP party leader Andrea horwath not to support the proposed budget announced last week by the province’s Liberal Government.

“Going to an election isn’t the ideal situation. I would have honestly

preferred if we could have made things work. What we have seen is the Liberal Government come forward with a budget that has made in excess of 70 promises and I can’t continue to support them. They haven’t even delivered on the three things we negotiated in the last budget which were very do-able and practical… the financial accountability office, lowering auto insurance rates by 15 per cent, and increasing access to homecare.”

She added, “There

are a lot of issues still before the house I would like to see wrapped up… People are telling me they are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet and we’re not really seeing anything in the budget to alleviate that and, on top of that, there has been so much money that has been wasted… I do believe this was the right decision to have been made.”

Included in the Liberal minority government’s 2014-2015 budget announced last week was $1 billion for transportation

infrastructure in the Ring of Fire; however that funding is dependent on securing matching funds from the federal government.

Campbell said she agrees investing in the Ring of Fire is very important. “This is something I have been quite critical of the government over for the last couple of years. I didn’t think enough was being done, but I think this Liberal Government has been positioning themselves for an election… virtually in the same week they

promised a billion dollars for the Ring of Fire, they promised just about a billion dollars in Kitchener-Waterloo, the money that has been promised all over the province, they are increasing our deficit by over $3 billion and my question is do we really have the money in the province right now to deliver these things. As important as they are, and the Ring of Fire is absolutely important, is this achievable and will this group of Liberals deliver on that when they weren’t able to deliver

on those three things we brought forward in the last budget.”

Liberal candidate Anthony Leek said he isn’t surprised to be going into an election. “Whether the budget was going to pass or not I don’t think either was going to be a surprise. If it was going to be a passed budget, cool. If it was going to be a failed budget because the NDP decided not to support it, we’ll just go ahead into an election. No real surprise in either direction. When you’re in a minority situation you always have to be prepared for one or the other. We’re into a campaign now which is going to be a bit longer than usual which is kind of nice, especially in this large region and I hope to get around to as many communities as possible.”

he said of the Ring of Fire announcement, “I think it’s good

news. Being able to dedicate money to that is important with part of the Ring of Fire being in our riding. I think there are lots of things in that budget that are going to help northerners in Northwestern Ontario and our riding and it would be really nice to be a part of that. I’m going to send a positive message in what I’ve been able to accomplish over the last two and a half years, from re-building the riding association to my time on council (in emo) and what we’ve been successful at. I’m hoping to share that story with everyone and hopefully help make a difference across this riding.”

PC candidate Randy Nickle commented on the upcoming election, “I’m very excited to get into election mode. I’ve been in the candidate position for a year and a half and I think we need some changes in

this province.”Jobs and the economy

will be a top priority for him and his party.

he said he supports PC Leader Tim hudak’s decision not to support the provincial budget.

“We’re not prepared to support the budget. The issue is we believe we need to get our books balanced in the province and that’s going to help us get jobs. We can’t continue to have deficits and wasteful spending. Now we’ll have a chance to go to the electorate. Most people are really upset as well. We all manage our finances in a way that’s prudent and smart and the province needs to change the way they’re doing things.”

Commenting on the Ring of Fire announcement he said, “I think they can announce everything they want, but it’s taken them this long to get to an announcement. There’s been a lot of interest

in the Ring of Fire by various corporations and one that pulled out due to a lot of frustration. This announcement, I think, was foreshadowing the budget where they’re going to turn around and say we’re not any closer to balancing the budget and in fact we’re going to add more debt to the province. They didn’t have a plan. We have a plan and I’m ready to work hard for the north. I believe the PCs have a plan.”

Kenora MP and Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford commented on the

provincial Ring of Fire announcement, “If this announcement did anything it said this is the scope of economic investment we are prepared to make… The scope and scale is the first piece. The second one is that they would take that all important step of identifying specific major infrastructure projects that could be funded based on the province’s priorities on things like the Ring of Fire and specifically the major infrastructures that would be required to move it ahead.

We are in that position now. This looks like it’s all in delay now because of the election.”

In a municipal press release Mayor Dennis Leney stated, “We want to play a strategic role in the Province’s development of an east-West corridor to provide a highly efficient, all-season service road.”

Candidates in the Kenora riding are Sarah Campbell, incumbent MPP, NDP, Anthony Leek of the Liberal party, Randy Nickle of the PC party, and Tim McKillop of the Green party.

What a wonderful spring day in Sioux

Lookout!As I sat at the rail

bar on our deck one afternoon last week, overlooking the lake, my wine chilling in the glass between sips, I marveled at the marigold

skeletons in the flower box standing guard over the fading ice of Pelican Lake.

Each spring I ruffle the ol’ pods and a new bunch of glorious golden marigolds unfolds to grace our little garden. Soon this cool April

vision will transform into the warm contentment of the 2010 mid-summer bouquet in the other picture.

I do love all of our seasons and squirm in anticipation, like a kid at Christmas, as each new one comes into sight.

Story-sharing Circle held at Centennial CentreGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

A group of 11 i n t e r e s t e d p e o p l e

gathered on the top floor of the Centennial Centre last Thursday evening to share stories about their lives and experiences in Sioux Lookout.

The Sioux Lookout First Nations Women’s hand Drumming Group opened the event with a traditional song, after which all present gathered in a circle.

Following this, a heart shaped rock which organizer Reilly Scott had found, was passed in turn

to each speaker who related stories about their life.

Group member John Cole Sr. was first speaker. Born in 1923 and 91 years of age, he remembers Sioux lookout when there were only 1000 inhabitants and subsequently told some interesting tales about when he was growing up in the locality.

each remaining participant then continued the circle by relating stories about themselves and the evening ended with light refreshments and beverages offered to all present.

STuDeNTS from Pelican Falls First Nations high School

and Queen elizabeth District high School gathered in the music room at QeDhS last Friday for a workshop by a group of local musicians as part of National Youth Arts Week.

Mel Stewart, Patty everson, Doug Vinkle, Greg hlady, Dan Fraser, Reilly Scott, Kelly McIntosh and music teacher Jon Armstrong were there to encourage local kids who have an interest in music and to help them to express themselves and work with younger musicians who are just starting out, by relating to the students how they initially became involved

in music and how events and people throughout their lives influenced them to engage in creative songwriting.

Mel Stewart opened the event by playing a couple of his original songs and then spoke about how he got started and how his life influenced his songwriting. he mentioned, as an example, a song which he dedicated to Carolina uSA the landscape of which he has fond memories.

Following this, students and musicians gathered in a circle and each musician, in turn, played one of their compositions and then explained where their creative influence came from.

everson spoke about the event. “I am happy to be here and see so many

young people. One of the strengths of living in Sioux Lookout is that it’s a great place to emerge as a songwriter or musician because there are a lot of opportunities to try and play in a very supportive setting.”

Armstrong added, “It’s

great to get our local singers and songwriters together to share their love of music with our students.”

Scott, organizer of the workshop and a musician stated, “I am absolutely thrilled that QeDhS and

local musicians have teamed up to provide this event for National Youth Arts Week. I can tell that the youth are very excited and receptive to it.”

hlardy described it, “Creative, cross pollination.”

A circle of musicians and students was formed.

The evening opened with a tradition prayer and drumming.

Continued from frontwrite the names of their departed loved ones on them. upon conclusion of the march, these were released into the air to carry messages to the deceased. The release also symbolized the letting go of the pain and grief felt by family and friends of a suicide tragedy.

The day continued with a presentation in the

QeDhS gymnasium where a crowd that included many students, including 22 from Pelican Falls First Nations high School (PFFNhS), attended a ceremony which had the theme “It is ok to ask 4 help.”

MC Darryl Tinney, PFFNhS Principal, opened the event by asking Terri Fiddler from Sandy Lake First Nation

to say an opening prayer, after which he called for a moment of silence in honor of deceased loved ones, followed by a traditional song from the drum group.

An emotional Kejick then spoke about the death of her nephew and the need to prevent youth suicide by extending a helping hand to people perceived to be disturbed in any way.

Derek Maud, Band Counselor at Lac Seul, on behalf of Chief Clifford Bull, then

presented her with an eagle feather.

Tinney invited Mayor Dennis Leney to speak about the need for community awareness of youth suicide within Sioux Lookout and surrounding communities.

It was then time for the guest speaker.

Chris Nilan currently lives in Montreal and is a retired professional ice hockey player, having played 688 regular season games as a right –wing between 1980 and

1992. he played for the 1986 Montreal Stanley Cup winners and was known as “Knuckles,” because he fought to win.

Along the way Nilan battled problems with alcohol, prescription drugs, and heroin addiction.

Finally cured, he currently delivers talks to kids in schools about bullying and its relation to youth suicide. he utilizes, with words and gestures, examples of the various forms it can take, such as physical or cyber and the effects it can have on those being bullied and how they are traumatized,

suffer rejection, fear of going to school and ultimately depression, which, if the warning signs are not detected at an early stage, can lead to suicide.

Nilan finished his presentation with the message that if you are feeling depressed and suicidal don’t be afraid to ask for help. “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” he said.

Presentations were made to all the speakers, followed by a closing prayer from Fiddler.

Many of those who marched had personal reasons for doing so.

That’s how one Anokeewin Kenomadee Gamik (AKG) trainee described the decision to discontinue funding to the AKG Training Centre.Last Thursday Gordon Pemmican and 15 other trainees found out they

wouldn’t be able to graduate AKG’s life skills and pre-employment training program.

NEWS:New town hall creates jobs

Sioux Lookout’s new Municipal Administration building is expected to take nearly two years to build and will create jobs for local workers.In a joint announcement issued last week by Northern Development and

Mines Minister Shelley Martel, Kenora-Rainy River MP Bob Nault and Mayor Lawrence Martin, it was disclosed the $1.36 million project will begin this month and should be completed by March 31, 1995.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem


Charla Moonias comes from Neskantaga (Lansdowne house). She said she was there because, “I lost six people to suicide last year.”

Barb Carpenter commented, “I have a cousin that committed suicide and I am here

to raise awareness and support.”

emily Donio had 10 balloons, each with a different name inscribed. “I’m just showing my respect for my loved ones, for my mum and relatives who have passed on…not through suicide.”

Nilan stated, “By marching, it brings awareness and hopefully attention to a number of reasons why kids might have suicidal thoughts. I thought today’s turnout was awesome.”

Leney added, “This is my fourth yellow ribbon parade and again it’s one

of those good things, bad things that highlights the tragedy of suicide in our communities.”

he continued, “It’s something we should all be aware of and take into consideration. What family or friends say and whether it is a sign of potential suicide.”

QeDhS principal Steve Poling was enthusiastic. “It was just amazing and such an honor to speak and support the work that Norma and NNeC are doing to promote people helping each other and supporting people in need.”

Kejick summarized, “I just want to say that my nephew’s death was not for nothing. Yesterday I witnessed three students come forth and ask for help and all three were feeling suicidal. So when I started doing this, my goal was to save one life and I know we have saved more than one.”

She continued, “We have passed out more than 14 thousand

Yellow Ribbon Cards that carry a message of hope with instructions for anyone feeling depressed, but don’t know what to do. The card carries instructions for them to talk to another person. If they are not strong enough to do this, then all they have to do is hand their Yellow Ribbon Card to someone. The other side has instructions for the person who receives the card, to listen or, alternatively, to get help for the person.”

She added, “Today is a great day, even though it was cold and overcast. Life is not always sunny and rosy and I think this just shows that we can walk through anything.”

Area First Nations receive funding for community energy plansTim Brody

SeVeRAL First Nation communities in the Sioux

Lookout area have been approved by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) for Aboriginal Community energy Plan (ACeP) funding.

A press release from OPA explains, “The

ACeP program assists First Nations and Métis communities to develop or update a community energy plan, with the goal of improving energy efficiency, reducing electricity consumption, and assessing opportunities for clean energy generation… The ACeP program will support Aboriginal

participation in Ontario’s energy sector by providing up to $90,000 in funding to First Nation or Métis communities for local energy planning activities, with remote communities being eligible for an additional $5000. Through this program, the province is encouraging the development of energy plans that identify the unique needs and interests of each First Nation and Métis community.”

Participating communities include Shibogama First Nations Council Technical Services – representing Kasabonika Lake, Kingfisher Lake, Wapekeka, Wawakapewin, Wunnumin Lake, Lac

Seul, and Windigo First Nations Council representing Sachigo Lake and North Caribou Lake.

“The Ontario Power Authority is pleased to support Aboriginal communities in developing their energy plans through the ACeP program. This is one of several ways in which the OPA encourages Aboriginal participation in Ontario’s energy sector and helps ensure a sustainable energy supply to communities across the province,” said Colin Andersen, OPA Chief Executive Officer.

“The Aboriginal Community energy Plan program will support First Nation

and Métis communities in developing plans that will help conserve electricity and find opportunities for clean small-scale generation. As outlined in Ontario’s updated Long-Term energy Plan, community energy plans will complement and support regional energy plans by allowing communities to identify their unique community needs and interests,” stated Bob Chiarelli, Minister of energy.

“Thanks to the Aboriginal Community energy Plan program, 29 Aboriginal communities can start planning for their energy future. Aboriginal participation in energy sector development will help Ontario to both encourage renewable energy and

provide sustainable economic development opportunities for First Nations and Métis communities across the province,” commented David Zimmer, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.

“We’re very excited that our tribal council will be able to work with its five member communities to develop energy plans that will complement the existing work of future connection to the provincial grid, determining local distribution and addressing conservation. Our end goal is to create opportunities and, by planning now, we can help ensure a good future for our communities,” concluded Margaret Kenequanash, executive Director, Shibogama First Nations Council.

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is seeking quotes

for the installation of a concrete foundation for

the new Sioux Lookout gateway sign.

Peter Moyer, P.eng, Director of Infrastructure and Development for the municipality, commented, “We want

the foundation completed by the end of May. After that there is a volunteer welder who will put the superstructure together. Then there is a high school group led by

Matt Culham who have already constructed the timber portion of the sign. Once the steel superstructure is ready Matt and his group of students will come out

and assemble the timber part of the sign.”

The plan is to have the structural steel work completed and have Culham and students install the timber

portions in June.Landscaping will

also take place around the sign which will be located just south of the Frog Rapids bridge.

Sioux Lookout OPP hosting anonymous prescription drug drop-offTim Brody

SIOux Lookout OPP are encouraging residents to turn in

at the Tourist Information Centre any unused prescription medication at a special prescription drug drop-off at the Travel

Information Centre May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

An officer will be on site to accept the medication as part of a province wide initiative aimed at combating prescription drug abuse and reducing crime associated with the

unlawful use and sale of the unused drugs.

Sioux Lookout OPP Constable Stephen Waite said the drop off is for medicines that are expired or that people are not using. he emphasized that it is an anonymous disposal.

Waite shared, “It’s an initiative that is being put on in communities across Canada right now due to the high number of deaths caused by prescription drug misuse.”

A concern police have is that expired or unused drugs such as Oxycodone or Tylenol 3 might end up in the wrong hands and be used or sold for recreational purposes.

Police remind the

public they can drop off any unused medications at any time to their local pharmacist. Anyone with questions about the initiative can contact the OPP detachment at 737-2020.


An evening of musical talent held at Youth CentreGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

The Youth Centre last Saturday evening was the

setting for a concert that featured five young performers, Gabriel Fiddler, Nigel Morris, Mark Macabeo, Pierce Fiddler and Brandon Johnson. Also on hand to entertain the audience of 46 people were veteran musicians Nick Sherman and Jean-Paul De Roover.

The evening commenced with Reilly Scott, Coordinator of National Youth Arts Week events in Sioux Lookout, thanking everyone for coming. She then introduced the MC for the evening, Pelican Falls student John Wesley who said he was kind of nervous. “This is my first time doing this. I like singing but I have a problem with stage fright and I look upon this opportunity as a way of overcoming it.”

he then went on to

introduce the artists. each one gave a short performance showcasing their talents which included some intricate rap dancing movements by Morris as part of his repertoire.

Sioux Lookout born Nick Sherman was next on stage, performing his first song with the aid of talented 17 year old guitarist Brandon Johnson, after which he continued entertaining the audience solo with some of his original compositions.

Thunder Bay born musician Jean-Paul De Roover closed the evening with a selection of his original songs which are an unusual blending of electronica, folk rock and pop.

Afterward, Johnson commented on the evening, “I felt pretty excited and a little bit nervous. It’s a great honor to be sharing a concert with Nick Sherman.”

Gabriel Fiddler added,

“I have been playing since I was four years old. My dad plays guitar and he taught me everything. I was looking forward to performing and I am thankful for the opportunity to do so.”

Sherman was happy to be back. “It’s nice. I really enjoy coming home and I’m happy to be here playing for my friends, family and also any new people in town.”

he now calls Thunder Bay home and continued, “It’s always nice to get out of where I live and come back to Sioux Lookout where there is a bit more open space. I always appreciate that.”

he concluded, “I think it is important to have events like this, especially in a small town where there is not a lot for youth to do. I want to pass on the message that even if you come from a small town you can still pursue music if you want to.”

Roover shared, “I

was invited by Reilly to participate in the Youth Arts Week. Also, Nick is one of my best friends and it’s fun to do gigs with one another.

“I work for the city of Thunder Bay and I started my own Youth Festival eight years ago, as I was passionate about youth culture. National Youth Week

means a lot and I am happy to be here. It has been awhile since I have been to Sioux Lookout and it’s good to be back.”

Scott was happy with the evening. “I just wanted to bring some regional musical talent to Sioux Lookout and give local youth the opportunity to perform

with professional musicians who started their careers in the area.”

Audience reaction was positive. Lianne Finn said, “It’s fantastic! Great music, great space, and awesome people.”

Christine Chisel added, “I enjoyed the night very much. Lots of awesome talent in this town.”

The Sioux Lookout h o r t i c u l t u r a l Society has

been in existence since 1948. We belong to District 14 of the Ontario horticultural Association. Our mandate is to provide information, generate interest in gardening, and educate local garden enthusiasts to what can be grown in our challenging climate as well as work on a beautification project in our community.

We started working on a memory garden last year at the back of the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win hospital near the emergency entrance. This garden will take a few years to complete and will be dedicated to former residents who have passed on. Donations of plant material such as flowering shrubs,

perennials and roses can be made in memory of someone, or monetary donations can be made to the hospital foundation.

Our members will plant, weed, water and maintain the garden. It currently has some benches, a couple of picnic tables and a gazebo is being built. The roses from the old General hospital were dug up and have been planted at the new site. Doctors, hospital staff, and residents have already started making donations of trees and plant material. We are hoping that this garden will become a great place to visit for both residents and hospital patients and staff.

This year we will be holding our membership drive in May. A family membership is $10 and you get an oriental lily with that. A membership entitles you to participate in all

events we are planning for this year and the money helps us carry out our beautification projects. We plan to have a giant pumpkin growing contest (plants provided) with weigh-in in the fall, a perennial plant swap or sale in June, district meeting in Vermilion Bay, a garden tour in July, tallest sunflower contest, a hypertufa workshop and gardening experience in the Memory Garden.

We have a Facebook page where our members can submit questions, pictures, ideas or gardening articles they have found interesting or would like to try. If you would like to join our Facebook page please give me a call or inbox me. The horticultural society is also very interested in the environment as it pertains to the

interaction of plants and animals. The provincial organization is working on getting milkweed removed from the noxious weed list (Ministry of Agriculture) due to the decline of the Monarch butterfly. We encourage people to plant material that will be inviting to birds, bees and butterflies. We discourage the use of pesticides and herbicides and believe in a natural approach to gardening using safe non-toxic methods to discourage unwanted insects and weeds.

As soon as the snow is gone and your lawn is bare and dry give it a good raking. Raking will not only get any fall leaves that may be left but will fluff up your grass, let air get to the roots and get rid of snow mould. Next

check your shrubs and trees for damage caused by heavy snow. Prune any broken off stems or branches. Wait for leaf buds before you do any heavier pruning. Spring blooming shrubs like lilac, snowball bush and forthsyia should not be pruned until after they bloom unless they have broken stems from the weight of the snow. If you have given some of your plants winter protection, like burlap or mulch or rose cones, remove carefully after the snow or ice has released them from the ground so that they can begin their growing cycle. If you are unsure whether a plant is alive or dead, wait. Time will tell. If it hasn’t started to grow in a month or two then you can remove it. Try an eco-friendly way of dealing with pests or weeds. Many

natural ways of dealing with ants or other insects can be found on the Internet. Check your yard for standing water that may be lying around in old flower pots or other containers that may be in your yard. Mosquitoes love these breeding grounds. Think about planting some herbs and heat loving plants like peppers and tomatoes in pots and placing them on your deck or balcony where you have easy access when you want to use them. Put up a hummingbird feeder. They will arrive around the end of the month.

is vital, so you want to do everything possible to keep it working its best. To make sure your septic system will remain in optimum working condition, there are a few simple things you can do, both day to day and on a larger scale.

The easiest and most important step to making sure your septic system continues working is to

have the tank pumped regularly. This will prevent the vast majority of septic system related problems. With most newer septic systems it is mandatory to have an effluent filter installed. This filter helps prevent solids from entering the septic bed. These filters require regular maintenance. If not cleaned this filter will plug, causing sewage to back up.

Another simple way to help your septic system is to ensure that

only biodegradable and organic wastes are put down the drain. Septic systems work by having bacteria break down the waste you put into it. By introducing substances that cannot be broken down this way you jeopardize the system’s ability to function and can clog the pipes. The septic system, particularly the bacteria, works better when warm. Insulating the top of your tank will help keep it warm and working effectively during

the winter.There are also a few

landscaping tips that will help your septic system. You will want to landscape so the surface water will be kept away from the drainage field. If the ground becomes saturated from surface water, the water from the tank cannot drain into the field. Growing pines and similar trees near (but not on) the field will help absorb extra moisture. You should grow grass over the septic field because this prevents soil erosion.

While there are many things you can do to help your septic system work its best, there are also several things that you should avoid doing. You should try not to introduce large amounts of water into the septic system over a short period of time. The large influx of water can flush untreated solids into the drainage field. Grease, oils, and fats should not be put down the drain. These substances can clog the pipes or flow into the drainage field and reduce its ability to

absorb moisture. Also refrain from introducing strong cleaners or bleach into the septic system because they can kill off the bacteria necessary to keep the system running. Willows and poplars are not good trees to have near the field. Their roots like to be in water, so they will seek out the moisture of the drainage field and can damage the pipes. You do not want to drive over or put weight on the septic system. The pressure can damage the tank and break the pipes.

The Sioux Lookout community garden can help.

Many people today are eating healthier and helping people achieve that goal is the purpose of the community garden.

Joanne Peacock, a Northwestern health unit health educator, helps run the community garden and stated, “The community garden is open to anyone in the community who would like to do some gardening. This will be our fourth season that the garden has been open. We have 24 beds now. People can contact me and we’ll set you up with a bed.”

The community garden is located on Second Avenue near Queen elizabeth District high School. Beds are approximately three by 12 feet.

“If you have no experience whatsoever with gardening but have always wanted to try please give me a call because I can help you and walk you through it. everything from how to prepare your soil to the seeds you would like to select to how to look after the bed as well as the proper time to pick and at the end of the season if you would like to know how to prepare the foods, I can help you with that too,” Peacock said.

Knowledge of how to garden and prepare produce is becoming a bit of a lost art, however, she stated. “It’s coming back more and more because people recognize the value of growing their own foods.There is a lot of satisfaction when you look at your bed and can say, wow! I grew that.”

All the beds in the community garden have been taken each year so Peacock advises people to contact her right away at 737-2292 to reserve a bed.

People who purchase beds are given keys to

access the garden as well as access to gardening tools and water for their gardens.

Peacock said she is very pleased the community garden, operated by the municipal environment Committee, has been so popular.

Asked about preparing and planting the garden bed Peacock advised, “You can start preparing your bed as soon as there is no snow; you can start turning it over and getting the weeds out. As soon as the air temperature warms around the May long

weekend is a good time to start planting.”

She said the idea is to wait until there is no longer frost during the evening.

Peacock added, “A lot of people have already started seeds indoors so they are hearty enough when the weather warms up to transplant into the garden.”

and yards.however some people

may have questions about what they can throw out.

Municipal Public Works Manager Andrew Jewell reminds, “Yard waste consisting of branches, leaves and

grass clippings can be disposed of but are now subject to a tipping fee of $100 per tonne that was implemented in June of 2013. As far as spring cleaning, paint cans are accepted as follows: empty and dry cans -free; cans containing paint are subject to a cost depending on the size of the can.”

be contacted to direct any inquiries for the

BURNING PERMITS RESIDENTS OF SIOUX LOOKOUT, HUDSON AND ALCONA

All residents burning brush and grass between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015 are required to purchase an annual “Open Air Burning Permit” for $10.00.

All residents who have an incinerator must purchase an “Annual Incinerator Permit” for $10.00. This permit is valid for one year beginning April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.

Any resident who does not have a Permit for burning will be subject to a fine as set out in By-Law No. 11-04.

Permits can be purchased at the following locations:

- Sioux Lookout Fire Hall, 39 Fifth Avenue, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.- Municipal Office, 25 Fifth Avenue, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.- Hudson Fire Hall, Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

MacKenzie McKay from Sioux Lookout recently participated, along with 350 other reservists from Saskatchewan,

Manitoba and North-west Ontario, in exercise Bison Warrior 2014 which ran from April 26 - May 3 and was staged in the Carberry hills of CFB Shilo army base located in southwestern Manitoba.

Private McKay has been part of the Canadian Armed Forces for the past three years and is a member of the 18 Field Ambulance Medical Corps from Thunder Bay which is attached to 38 Canadian Brigade Group.

Commenting on his enlistment, McKay said, “I was offered an aboriginal military training program for a summer - Bold eagle.” he added that he most looked forward to the medical station experience.

in attendance. She spoke about the changeover. “This building has a lot of history, so we are going to continue to make it good history.”

She was followed by Mayor Dennis Leney and the newly appointed Youth Centre

commented, “I’m glad to see that the Centre is up and running again and by the crowd that we have got tonight, it looks like it’s going to be a success and I hope that all the youth in the municipality

participate in it.”he added, “It’s always

been a commitment of this Council that youth comes first.”

Spade shared, “I just hope this is a place for youth to do positive things, to be involved in the community, and

to learn from each other. I look forward to meeting the youth in the community.”

Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club (SLGCC) on the evening of May 3 for a special curling wind-up and golf kick-off potluck dinner organized by the SLGCC Curling Committee.

The evening included presentations to this season’s curling champions.

Ladies Club Champions receiving the Minnie Mickelson Memorial Trophy were Laurel hakala, Rita Driver, Tracey ellek, Jeanette Pierce and Florence Bailey.

Mens Individual Club Champions for the Tuesday Night League were John Davies, Chris Pizziol, Tim Davies, Ian Staley and Garth Gastmeier. Thursday Night League champs were Laurie Jefferson, Chris Jefferson, Bryan Neufeld and Neil Anderson.

Mens Club Champions receiving the Ralph Curtis Memorial Trophy were Laurie Jefferson, Chris Jefferson, Bryan Neufeld and Neil Anderson.

how to bring curling and golf together. This is one club and people need to remember that. We wanted to organize an event that would bring our

Visual arts workshop held at QEDHSGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

A visual arts w o r k s h o p was held in

the art room of Queen elizabeth District high School last Saturday afternoon.

Local artist and workshop teacher, 17

year old Santana Paleske, showed the 10 children who attended some introductory basics about graphite drawing, with each child creating their own ideas with the aid of graphite pencils.

Speaking about the workshop, Paleske said, “The idea is to help

the younger kids to get enthusiastic about art. The turnout was more than I expected and if they come up with anything interesting it is very gratifying for me.”

an interest in art and if Santana can do what she can to inspire kids in the community, then she has done something great for Youth Arts Week.”

Commenting on the afternoon, 10 year old Anna Schaub said, “It’s been pretty good so far.”
