Library offers March Break activities for children

Geoff ShieldsStaff Writer

How to amuse the children during the holiday break can be a

problem for many parents but, thanks to the Sioux Lookout Public Library, a solvable one.

During the week of March 10-14 the library hosted numerous events to keep children occupied and amused. Varied activities, such as screening a movie, the setting up of art stations in the children’s area of the library, a games day, and culminating with storytelling on the last day, were events that could be enjoyed by both children and parents in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Micheal Laverty, Assistant/ Children’s Librarian, spoke

about the week. “It’s been great. we typically see new families that we usually don’t see and, with the hockey tournament in town, we had a few parents and kids from northern communities drop by, which was good.”

He added, “I am looking to start an after school program and a schedule that involves people of all ages, doing things like computer learning and art workshops.”

wendy MacDonald, CEo/Chief Librarian, thought, “It was an exceptional week, very nice to a number of kids who were able to take advantage of the program.

we had a number of out of towners who used the facilities we offered and that was great.

Story-telling and recording project funding announced

Tim BrodyaSSociate editor

THE Municipality of Sioux Lookout and the Nishnawbe-

Gamik Friendship Centre were recipients of $25,000 each, courtesy of the Federal Government New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Kenora MP Greg Rickford made the announcement March 14 at the Centennial Centre on behalf of Alice wong, Minister of State for Seniors.

The friendship centre will use its funding for the project Guided by our Elders: Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre Elders’ Council. It is aimed at developing an intergenerational mentorship

program in which elders will educate youth on various aspects of aboriginal culture.

The municipality will use its funding for the People First: Proud History, Bright Future project that aims to purchase studio equipment to be used for facilitating the development and delivery of programs, such as story gathering, for youth and seniors.

“I am very happy to see the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre come together to support seniors in the area,” Rickford stated. “Sioux Lookout is rich in First Nation culture and this project is a great step forward in bringing the community

together to protect those traditions,” he added.

The municipality will work with the friendship centre and senior centre to identify elders, both in Sioux Lookout and the north, to interview.

with the funding the municipality will be able to purchase audio recording equipment which will be placed in the youth centre.

Young people will be trained how to operate the equipment and conduct the interviews with the elders.

Gathered stories will find their way to the library and museum.

In the case of the museum, gathered stories will complement items in the collection.

the New Horizons for Seniors Program for the acceptance of the Guided by our Elders: Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre Elders’ Council proposal. As a friendship centre serving the urban Aboriginal community, we value the contributions of our

part in rebuilding the relationships, which are so important to cultural continuity, while assuring our Elders that they hold a vital role in our community.”

Friendship Centre board president Jim Robinson shared, “we’re looking forward to this partnership. Hopefully

in the future it will be something we can expand on.”

“The Municipality looks forward to working with our partners on this exciting project, including the Sioux Area Seniors Activity Centre, the Sioux Lookout Public Library, the Nishnawbe-Gamik

future,” stated Ann Mitchell, Sioux Lookout Chief Administrative Officer.

“The Municipality of Sioux Lookout recognizes the importance of capturing our community’s rich history. The People First: Proud Past, Bright Futures oral history project will enable us to digitally capture some of the most significant stories that shaped our community’s development over the last 100 years, and will make them available to the public through museum and library programming,” stated Mayor Dennis Leney.

“The Sioux Lookout Community Museum is honoured to have been given the opportunity to steward this project! The project will capture the history and rich cultural heritage of our community, by involving seniors and Elders in the development of the project specifics, providing interviewing training to youth participants, and sharing knowledge and

cultural traditions. The project will facilitate intergenerational and intercultural learning and relationship-building,” stated Brian MacKinnon, Deputy Clerk, Cultural & Communications Manager.

Sioux Lookout Clerk Mary MacKenzie commented, “The project will capture the history and rich cultural heritage of our community. It will involve seniors and Elders taking a leadership role in the development of

the project specifics, providing training to youth interviewers (interviewing skills) and sharing of knowledge and cultural traditions. The project will also foster and facilitate intergenerational and intercultural learning and relationship-building.”

She continued, “This project also marks a significant milestone for the Municipality, in terms of its involvement in direct program delivery to seniors. The Municipality undertakes

a variety of initiatives to support our older adults – typically from an administrative or financial perspective, as well as offering recreational programs such as dance classes; but this is the first time we are working on this type of intergenerational project – bringing together

youth and seniors to celebrate our community’s rich history.”

Rickford concluded, “This continues to be one of our more successful programs. Again this is focused on supporting capital infrastructure costs for operating seniors centres and programming. The uniqueness of today’s

announcement is that it combines both. on the one hand, you have the friendship centre in the business of gathering story tellers and then, on the capital infrastructure side, you have state of the art sound equipment which will be operated by youth to digitize and record these stories.”

No to rezoning park land

Recently homes near the Fuller Street Park received notification from the town of their plan to rezone the park from open Space to Multi Residential.

I am writing to comment on the proposed amendments. To be clear, I oppose the plan to rezone this property.

To start, the notice of rezoning was posted right beside the request for proposals to build on the land. The deadline for submitting a proposal closed before mayor and council have decided to accept the change in zoning. From my perspective, it looks like the decision has already been made and that plans are moving ahead. I wonder what might be driving this but was told by the town that it is only to make full use of the construction season and that there is still opportunity to voice my opinion about the rezoning and impact change. I hope that this statement is true.

Next, I wonder about the large amount of land already available in Sioux Lookout for residential development. why is the town not focusing on developing lands that are ready for such activities rather than repurposing green space that is the heart of our neighbourhood?

In brief, my concerns about the rezoning relate to:

1. Green space is proven to improve health and wellbeing. we should be conserving it.

2. There is no public park within walking distance of

this neighbourhood so accessible, safe recreation areas are already limited in this area.

3. Any traffic increases will cause even more deterioration of our already crumbling road.

4. with two schools within a block, roads are already busy. we have no sidewalks. More traffic puts children walking to and from school at risk.

Not so long ago, Project Playground suggested uses for this land as they too see the potential of the Fuller Street/Second Avenue green space for the community. Adjacent to the community garden and the Sunset women’s Aboriginal Circle as well many children within a few blocks (many who can’t afford organized recreation), there is strong rationale for maintaining or even enhancing this green space.

on March 19 my family and neighbours will be going to the town meeting to request that the town not rezone the property. we believe our neighbourhood is worth preserving. The Fuller Street/Second Avenue green space is a valuable neighbourhood resource which should be preserved. It should not be rezoned.

Regards,Marika Bellerose

In search of responsible urban planning

During the hot summer months children can be heard playing across the street, people are out playing ball with their dogs, others are coming to tend their gardens at the community garden, some may even be seen sitting beneath the shade of a tree escaping the summer heat. Despite the fact that the town has not maintained the playground equipment, has removed the skating rink, and now seldom even cuts the grass, people still come and walk through the dandelions.

You see, there is no public park anywhere on this side of town. So despite its limitations; despite the lack of sidewalks and benches; despite the poor road maintenance and dim lighting; and despite the area once having been a car dump site, people still come to the open green space on the corner of Fuller Street and Second Avenue.

This area has served as a makeshift park to not only the residents

of Fuller, Lincoln and Second Avenue but to the children from the two low rental apartment complexes in the area, the two shelters, seniors’ complexes, high school students on their lunch breaks, and to anyone else who does not have a car, a boat or is unable to walk a great distance.

So I am surprised that despite various areas of open land that could be developed in Sioux Lookout and at a time when, throughout the industrialized world, responsible urban planners are promoting the health benefits of planning green space into urban development, the mayor and town council are proposing that this is the area which should be re-zoned to provide multilevel housing.

A meeting is to take place on March 19, however a call for proposals for developing the area has already gone out and closed. Is this the usual process for how decisions are made? I assume this is one of the questions the mayor and council members will have to answer at the March 19 meeting.

I also look forward to hearing about how they chose this small open piece of land as a site for further residential development when they

are not able to support the current infrastructure for the residences which now exist in this area.

I look forward to learning of the studies they have conducted to ensure that excavation of a car dump site to build housing on will not result in any related health risks to the current or future residents.

I am also curious to hear why the recommendations for expanding this area into a park with playground equipment, possibly a cooling center, maybe a park bench or two seems to have been abandoned.

I look forward to attending the March 19 meeting to learn how these decisions are made, how proposals can go out before bylaws have been passed, and how the town sees these types of actions as sending a message that Sioux Lookout cares about the health and wellbeing of its residents, is a desirable place to live and will attract people to Sioux Lookout rather than drive them away in droves. I am sure I am not the only one who will be looking forward to hearing the answers to these, and other questions.

I stood in a puddleon my way across

the parking lot getting to the hardware store I thoughtlessly minced my way around a puddle between my truck and the front door.

Two steps later I was an eight-year-old kid again, on my way to school in a rainstorm, wearing my brand new Hopalong Cassidy

raincoat and a pair of rubber boots. I didn’t miss a puddle anywhere between home on Pine Street and Summer Street School. Not one! And I was a happy, happy little cowboy.

“who walks around a puddle at this time of year?” I asked myself as I turned around in the parking lot that sunny afternoon last week,

strolled back to the puddle with great glee, and proceeded to wade through the deepest, widest spot.

It was a March afternoon. It was heaven!

I forded that puddle twice more - just because it was there and I had rubber boots and I felt as joy-filled as a little kid with a new discovery.

And then, as I was getting into my truck to leave, I suddenly turned around and went back again with my camera. As I wallowed in the water taking pictures of my feet, singing to myself

Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore, trembling with the excitement of spring on the way, in the middle of a parking lot, I looked up and discovered people looking at me, staring with some sense of

puzzlement.I could only smile

and shrug. “who walks ARoUND a puddle at this time of year?” I pondered aloud as I turned toward my truck to drive home.

Celebrations to raise money for tent meetingGeoff ShieldsStaff Writer

A series of three day events that included the

selling of homemade

dinners, chili, bannock, soup and pies was held at the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre last week to honor the memory of the

late Apostolic Church Minister for Bearskin Lake Pastor Robert Mickenack.

The fundraiser was organized by Mickenack’s wife. Money raised will be used for the Power of Faith Ministry Tent

Meeting scheduled to be held in Sioux Lookout in June .

Ron okeese, the Minister for Power of Faith in Thunder Bay, was present last Thursday and commented on the proposed meeting, “I

think it’s something that is much needed in our area and keeping all our brothers and sisters in the Lord. we are honored to be asked to help out with the fundraising and the tent activity.”

Beverley Mickenack said, “I would like to

thank all the friends and family who helped me put this together and also the Friendship Centre for letting us use their hall.”

A rummage sale is planned for April and another activity yet to be specified is scheduled for May.

donations all year round, when it starts warming up outside, it starts

piling up inside at the SATS, and our in-coming donations can become a staggering amount.

we wish that the stream of offerings were more of a steady trickle than a Tsunami, however, we understand the natural human tendency when winter turns to spring, to throw open the shutters, shake out the rugs and out with the old…..

If you are a spring cleaner, consider starting early this year. we are ready for you.

other things to consider when making donations to the Salvation Army Thrift Store:

• If it has a lot of pieces (like children’s toys) please collect them together in a

zip-lock bag.• No mattresses please.• we can’t take

furniture. You can respond to this column if you want to give away furniture, or put a photo or note up in the store with your phone number for other shoppers to respond.

• Please do not donate sets of encyclopedias or text books.

• A good general rule when deciding if an article should be donated to the SATS is: if you wouldn’t give it to a friend or a family member then it is likely more suitable for the dump pile.

Thank you for your generous donations of good clothing and household items.

Local poet receives recognition for her workGeoff ShieldsStaff Writer

FoR Sioux Lookout resident, 20-year-old Savannah

Polenske, a dream came true when the Thunder Bay writers Circle published some of her poems in their Thunder - An Anthology publication.

Polenske started writing when she was

13 years old and since then has written over 200 poems. “I was born in Thunder Bay but raised in Sioux Lookout, however I moved back to Thunder Bay for high school and after I finished I decided I wanted to move back to Sioux Lookout to be with my dad and I am here working and helping him in the house,” she said.

Polenske spoke of her poetry and what motivates her writing. “I start writing a poem when I have something bothering me, something that I am really strongly thinking about, and I see where it goes from there.”

She added, “My life has never been boring, so there is always something going on and something

to write about. My poems are usually written about past relationships, life and lessons I have learned. Also I write about family and friends.”

Two of her published poems are dedicated to her parents. “My Rock is my most recent poem in the book. It was written at the beginning of 2014 and I dedicated it to my father. He has had a hard life and ended up having a stroke, so after that it was really

hard for him to raise my sister because my mom was always working and could not be around as much as she wanted to be.”

She continued, “There is a poem dedicated to my mother, called The Mother That She Is, which I wrote in appreciation for all the things she has done for me.”

Polenske’s father shared, “She is very good at rhyming words

and I am very proud of her. one of her poems is written about me.”

Regarding her future plans Polenske concluded, “I want to go to school and help kids with their speech. I would like to keep writing poetry and see what I can do with them in the future. My intentions are to give meaning to my readers for their own interpretation and how they can relate this to their own journey.”

CreeWest LP purchases Sioux Lookout businesses Special to the Bulletin

from CreeWest LP Inc. Winter

2013 NewsletterBy frank Giorno

CREEwEST LP closed a deal on october 17, 2013

to acquire Northern Skies Air Services which will operate as a division of the controlling company Creewest Limited Partnership.

Northern Skies Air Services will continue to hold the operating certificate, with the ownership now controlled by Creewest LP, a company that expands its mandate in owning and operating

its own airline company to one that will now provide hangar facilities and also a joint venture with Northern Airborne Maintenance for aircraft repair and maintenance services.

“This is a big step for Creewest,” said Ron Basaraba, CEo Creewest GP Inc., “but a positive one! The acquisitions are positive assets for the LP.”

Creewest LP’s plans to acquire these has been in the works for some time. Creewest’s Board of Directors gave the go ahead in April 2013 to purchase the hangar facility and air charter

service located in Sioux Lookout.

“what we are interested in is a venture that provides sustainability for today and growth and expansion for the future,” Basaraba said. “This is important because of mining opportunities, i.e. The Ring of Fire and other mining activities moving ahead with exploration and mining development in the next few years.”

The acquisitions will allow Creewest to expand and build on service to Timmins and the James Bay coastal areas.

“with a large amount of our own capital and approved funding from the Nishnawbie-Aski Development Fund and Commercial Institute Financing, Creewest was able to put this deal together,” explained Basaraba.

Prior to the purchase

Creewest undertook a careful review of Northern Skies Air Services equipment and reviewed the potential of the Sioux Lookout location for profitable services to Northwestern ontario. The review confirmed and found that the acquisition positions Creewest to be a leader in providing services to mining companies and local freight and passenger services to First Nation communities in Northwestern ontario.

Additional services provided by Creewest will include regular charter flights for regular and emergency health needs; flights for ontario government business for ministries such as Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Natural Resources, Northern Development and Mines, and federal government ministries such as Indian and

Northern Affairs Canada, Health Canada, and various others.

“There is a growing need in the resource sector such as mining also,” Basaraba said. “we see a steady growth of business over the next 10 to twenty years and this makes the purchase of the air service and hangar most attractive. In the geographical area where we are now situated the acquisition of Northern Skies Air Services will prove and solidify potential wealth creation in the decision to acquire such a well constructed hangar, as we feel that establishing ourselves now will certainly assist us in future to be a player in future mining activities as a hub and distribution center in aviation and non-aviation sectors.”

“we will build, grow, expand and make our

ownership communities proud of what we have accomplished and where we can go from here,” Basaraba added.

Creewest is a First Nations Regional organization founded by community economic development representatives from the Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, and weenusk First Nations, originally formed to provide the benefits arising from the construction and operations of the De Beers Canada Victor Project. Creewest LP presently holds the air transportation contract with De Beers Canada and is in a joint venture agreement with Air CreeBec providing the work of that contract of air transportation and cargo movement between Timmins and the De Beers Victor Site.

Sioux Lookout Trappers Council holds meeting

Geoff ShieldsStaff Writer

A m e e t i n g , a c c o m p a n i e d by an early

breakfast, was held March 15 at the Nishnawbe - Gamik Friendship Centre by members of the Sioux Lookout and Area Trappers Council.

Items listed on the agenda included the need to hold elections to fill the positions of President, Vice –President, and Secretary. There have also been concerns raised over a seeming lack of interest in trapping and the fact that membership has been dwindling. Among the current membership, it is felt that there is a need to reboot it and encourage more people to become members. Membership applications were available at the door for anyone wishing to apply.

Council member Victor Ciurko spoke about this issue. “There are a lot of young people going through trapping courses, which are part of a new program run by the ontario Fur Managers Association (oFMA). Under the guardianship of a mentor, you can now be a trapper at 12 years of age and we would like to give them the opportunity to be involved.”

He added, “I have been working with Jennifer Thomas at the NGFC to bring trappers together with people who utilize the resource. we are hoping to put a workshop together for next year at this time.”

Guest speaker at the meeting was Lori Lamond from the oFMA who is Zone 1A Director for the areas covering Ear Falls, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout. Also a

trapper, she expressed concern. “This trapper council has been down for a while and there are a lot of issues that need to be resolved. Up here there are a lot of native versus white issues and we have got to get everyone working together. we have got to see that everyone gets along if the trapping industry is to survive.”

She continued, “Trapping is the oldest industry in Canada and we need to keep the next generation of trappers going. we need to educate the public on trapping and keep the interest in the profession alive.”

Lamond concluded, “Everybody has to start working together to make things get along, because we need to make sure that further generations keep the spirit of trapping alive, no matter what your ethnic background is.”

Lac Seul Eagles, Mavericks, Hudson Bay Cree crowned hockey tournament champions

Tim BrodyaSSociate editor

THE word dynasty was mentioned several times last

Sunday as the Lac Seul Eagles won their fourth consecutive Northern First Nations Hockey Tournament A Side Championship.

The tournament attracted 14 teams in this, its 14th year, down sharply from past tournaments as other teams played in the Northern Bands Hockey Tournament in Dryden which also took place last week.

The Hudson Bay Cree from Fort Severn defeated the Michikan Bears from Bearskin Lake 7-2 in Sunday’s C Side Final.

The Hudson Bay Cree dominated throughout the game, leading 2-1 after the first period of play and 5-1 after the second period.

The Bears found it hard to generate offense against the Hudson Bay Cree and the majority of the game was played in the Bears end.

The Bears picked things up in the third period with several chances, scoring with about four and a half minutes left in the game to make the score 5-2. The Hudson Bay Cree answered back a minute later to go ahead 6-2.

The Hudson Bay Cree added one more goal with a minute and a half left to take the score to 7-2.

George Chapman, band councillor for Bearskin Lake, came to the games with the team.

He was very proud of their performance. “They were facing four line teams with only two lines. Everyone had a good time playing here.

“I can’t take anything away from them. That’s

all I can say. They had a good run.”

Fifty-two year-old Emesiah Anderson, goalie for the Hudson Bay Cree, has been playing in the tournament off and on for the past 10 years.

He said it was good hockey at the tournament but admitted, “I had a bit of a hard time with my age.”

A source of pride for him was playing alongside his son Shayne Anderson who said playing with his dad was great as was being in the championship finals.

In the B Side Final The Mavericks from Bearskin Lake beat the Bamaji Ice from Slate Falls 4-1.

The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first near the end of the first period, but the Ice tied things up 1-1 right away.

The Mavericks scored once more before the

period closed to take a 2-1 lead.

Going into the second period the Mavericks scored with five and half minutes left on a power play with the two man advantage to make the score 3-1 Mavericks.

In the dying minute of the third period the Ice pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. The Mavericks scored on the empty net to make the score 4-1, which was the final.

Ice Manager/Coach Elsie Sakakeesic commented, “It was really close. we weren’t sure coming into the game how it was going to turn out. we played them earlier in the tournament and it was mercy ruled. we came in ready to play hard.”

She commented on the tournament, “I think the organizers worked hard. They had to scramble to make things work but I think it turned out well.”

Members of the Bamaji Ice wore the number 66 on their shoulders throughout the tournament.

Sakakeesic explained why. “It was for former teammate John william Bighead who died tragically in a car accident along with four other community members, my brother and three young ladies, just this past summer. The team wanted to remember Bighead and the others who died.

“They played with heart. They played for him. They didn’t skate together all winter long. we were asked to go to the Dryden tournament but I said no, this is the last tournament that we played with John and we wanted to play here in his memory at the arena he played in last.”

Mavericks captain Shayne McKay commented, “I thought

we played pretty good and winning was pretty cool too.”

He said the tournament went well and his team enjoyed themselves.

Fans packed the arena for the A Side Final which saw the Lac Seul Eagles beat the Pikangikum Stampede 5-1.

Nine minutes into the first period Lac Seul scored to go ahead 1-0.

Lac Seul scored again in the second period to make it 2-0.

The Stampede got on the scoreboard about six minutes into the third period to make the score 2-1 Lac Seul.

with about nine minutes left the Eagles scored a short-handed goal to give them a 3-1 pad.

The Stampede were not able to capitalize on a two man advantage power play half way

continued from page 11things a lot easier on your goaltender and that’s what our guys did all week long and that’s why we were successful for a fourth year in a row. “

Commenting on the tournament overall, he said, “The number of teams decreased. The Dryden tournament was also a success. with the new Lac Seul arena this tournament’s only going to be expanding more and more. It’s just another great year. The organizers, Margaret and Jack (McKay), did a great job. without them and the other volunteers this tournament wouldn’t be possible.”

Eagles forward Kyler Ackewance was named one of the tournament’s top forwards and said, “It feels good. I can’t even say I accept this award because I do appreciate the fact they thought I was one of the best forwards but there are other guys on my team who also deserve this. They all played top-notch hockey.”

Speaking of the A Side Final, he shared, “Last time we played them they beat us 6-3 and it was a really good game. It was our third game of the day and we just weren’t playing our hockey. Today we played our hockey and we made them play our game and we came out on top at the end of the day. we worked hard and, like Tyler said, we eliminated their scoring chances and capitalized on ours.”

He enjoyed the tournament. “It’s a great time. It’s always nice to see people I haven’t seen in a long time. People on other teams I’m good friends with, it’s just a really nice time to come together. I love this week.”

Stampede forward Adrian Keeper also received an award for being a top forward and said, “It feels good.”

He said of the A Side Final, “They stopped us at the blue line and played good D.”

He said it was a good tournament.

K e n e q u a n a s h commented on this year’s tournament, “It went exceptionally well considering how many teams came in last minute and other teams that

cancelled. It was a real roller coaster for a while. The tournament went well. I heard positive comments about our tournament.”

Sioux Lookout Mayor Dennis Leney thanked everyone for coming, congratulated winners and finalists on great hockey, and said he looks forward to next year’s tournament.

Lac Seul First Nation Chief Clifford Bull congratulated his Eagles team, thanked everyone for competing, and said he would love to see the tournament grow to 50 teams from across the north.

This tournament’s going to be expanding more and more

March Break activities for children at library

Game on!The Sioux Lookout Public Library was a busy place March 12.

As part of its March Break line-up, the library hosted games Wednesday during which children played board games and video games on the Nintendo Wii.

Young library volunteer Nicholas Brohm organized a Magic: The Gathering card tournament that evening and made himself available to teach potential players such as Liam Goodfellow how the game works.

Mike Laverty of the library said many children came to play over the course of the day, noting that providing fun activities for children both from town and visiting during the hockey tournament is a great way to promote the library and its services.

New Cedar Bay pavilion to be ready this summerTim Brody

aSSociate editor

JoYCE Timpson and 11 other Sioux Lookout residents

braved minus 30 degree temperatures March 1 to compete in the 37th Annual Sleeping Giant Loppet in Thunder Bay.

Timpson, Friends of Cedar Bay chair, has been taking part in the event for many years, asked friends to pledge her 20 kilometre ski as a fundraiser for the organization.

Timpson shared, “The cold was the worst part. The impediment was the slow snow. we were double poling

down hills. I could have walked faster.”

Timpson collected more than $1600 in pledges for her ski run.

That money will be used as a buffer fund for the new pavilion to be constructed at Cedar Bay this year.

Anything left over will go to other Cedar Bay initiatives such as a therapeutic riding program at the stable.

Timpson said Friends of Cedar Bay are working with the municipality’s chief building official on the final design and costs for the pavilion project and hope to begin accepting tenders soon.

The pavilion, proposed to be 24 by 36 feet, will be located in the parking area across from the barn and riding ring.

The project has been in the works for several years.

“It came about because we have so many events out there. we wanted to basically use it as a shelter. we could offer food services at our events. People could come in out of the rain, snow or sun, and people could watch things going on at the riding ring. You could have an outdoor classroom. It could be a waiting place for the kids

going to the lake shore for Cedar Bay Day Camp or could just be a nice place to have a picnic,” Timpson said.

“The idea is to have it built for use this summer,” she shared.

Another Friends of Cedar Bay initiative, the cozy cabin, has done well this winter, Timpson said. “The cozy cabin is booming. we had 50 people show up two weekends ago. It’s been really popular this year.”

Anyone visiting the cozy cabin, located on the Cedar Bay lakeshore, will find a warm building complete with blazing woodstove and hot drinks.

Donations are accepted for providing the drinks and keeping the parking lot plowed.

Another fundraiser the Friends of Cedar Bay have been conducting for the past year is a refundable bottle drive.

People can drop off their empties at the Cedar Bay parking lot by the recycling bin to support the organization in its quest to provide outdoor recreational opportunities for the community.

Pond hockey tournament braves windy conditions

Geoff ShieldsStaff Writer

THE seventh annual Pelican Lake Pond Hockey

Tournament was held last Saturday. Players in both the Mens and womens Divisions braved the cold wind that blew across the lake to play against each other in true competitive spirit while expressing sport camaraderie on the ice.

The event was played in a Round Robin format with each team playing twice with two 10 minute periods with five minute

breaks in between.Christine Hoey,

organizer, commented on the day. “we had a good group of volunteers but because they changed the date of the tournament, we lost quite a few teams. originally there were six mens and five

womens, however due to the March break we played with only three of each gender.”

She added, “I would like to thank ice volunteers Luc Beaulne, Mitch wills, Todd MacDonald and Corey Hoey and the

rink volunteers Kevin Berube, John McIvor and Patty Everson.

“I would also like to thank the teams for coming out and hopefully the winter will not be as terrible next year and the tournament will be played on schedule in

February 2015.”The event started at

8:30 a.m. and was due to finish at 4, however due to the cold weather conditions the final game finished early at 3 o’clock. “It was a fun time, but competitive,” Hoey said.

Final scores were:Womens Division

First Place, Pink LightningSecond Place, BodanglersThird Place, Hack Slash

Mens Division1st Place, Turtle Beach

Second Place, The Mick-Kayz

Third Place, The Bulldogs

Women’s Division winners Pink Lightning. Turtle Beach and The Mick-Kayz battle it out.

It was fast paced and competitive hockey.

Meno Ya Win Hospital Auxiliary hosts luncheon

Geoff ShieldsStaff Writer

THE Seniors Activity Centre was a hive of

activity on Friday, March 14 when the Meno Ya win Hospital Auxiliary held its annual Soup & Sandwich Luncheon.

More than 145 people came through the doors

to enjoy a lunch that offered a large variety of sandwiches, soups, and desserts complemented by tea and coffee.

Co-President Eileen Jeffery commented, “The food is always spectacular. There is real variety and, as usual, it is open to anybody who wants to come. The

money we raise from this will go toward patient care and we are looking to purchase two recliner chairs that will fold out into a single bed. These will be geared toward mothers and their children and palliative care.

Secretary and coordinator of the event Lorraine Bennett added,

“It was an excellent turnout and we appreciate all the people who came out to support us.”

The next fundraiser will be Carnation Day. It will take place on May10. Baskets will be placed in stores for people to make donations to patient care.
